Message from Cafe Sol Azteca

This wonderful Mexican restaurant has been opened since 1989. Enjoy delectable Mexican cuisine in a bright milieu of exposed brick. South of the border drinks such as strawberry, grand gold, Cadillac, frozen, blue or regular Margaritas and Pina Coladas are a major attraction at Cafe Sol Azteca. Our Sangria has been awarded as ?Best of Boston? by Boston Magazine and Mexican Beers.

The Scene
Having served award-winning Mexican cuisine since 1974, Sol Azteca (there's another location near the Fenway) enjoys a loyal following. With exposed brick walls and traditional fiesta decorations, the subterranean dining rooms all share a casual, homey atmosphere. Congenial waiters clearly take pride in their service. Beware the acclaimed house sangria--its lethal.

The Food
This is not a shopping mall Mexican restaurant. Corn tortilla chips and a muy picante house salsa greet diners as they sit down. Superb starters include fresh, creamy guacamole and a smoky queso asado (a blend of three cheeses, baked with sliced chorizo). As for the entrees, a combination of enchiladas rojas (beef with red sauce), verdes (shredded chicken with green tomatillo sauce) and poblanas (chicken with fantastic mole sauce) can't be beat. The light, homemade flan (caramel or vanilla) is perfect for dessert.

Key Points

  • Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Cafe Sol Azteca: Good Food at a Price

by Claire W. | insider Insider | Rank: 26,920

My rating reflects what I consider high prices, not the quality of the food, which is very good. The menu is more limited than some Mexican restaurants, but I appreciate that they have several fish options. They do have a kid's menu. In summer they virtually double their serving space as they have a relatively large patio. In winter, the space is much more limited. We had a nice outdoor dinner (still had to wait) in the summer, and last week ate indoors (after waiting 20 - 30 minute). Our table was not the perfect layout for four, but the servers were very friendly, which made up for that. Good pick if you like Mexican food and don't mind the prices.

Cafe Sol Azteca is a Newton Gem!

by Newton F.

Cafe Sol Azteca is a neighborhood gem. I think MAVisitor (a previous reviewer) was WAY off the mark; Sol Azteca food has terrific flavor and is wonderfully authentic. It's hard to find Mexican food this good in Phoenix, much less on the East Coast. The indoors is charming and cozy on cold or rainy days, and the outdoors is cheerful and lovely on nice summer days. Treat yourself to Sol Azteca - but be prepared to wait in lines esp on nice summer or autumn days and weekends. Note to restaurant: watch the prices - you are not overpriced yet, but you will be if you go much higher.

Best Mexican in Boston!

by Anonymous

Sol Azteca has outstanding Mexican and Spanish food. I've had almost everything on the menu and found their carnitas (pork tenderloin with chipotle sauce) and enchilada mole are the best. It's a little pricey compared to other Mexican food places in Boston, but it's by far the best and most authentic.

I'm originally from Southern California and have travelled extensively in Mexico. This is what Mexican food should taste like.

Great atmosphere

by LauraNespo

The food and service were fine, but what I loved best was the cute courtyard for outdoor dining. My aunt moved to Newton 25 years ago and Sol Azteca is one of her favorite restaurants in the area. I went there for the first time this summer and was very pleased. The menu is not extensive, but they have all the authentic classics. The meals are large, so you might even end up having some to take home with you. The location is very convenient, as it is usually not hard to find street parking and it is also right across the street from the T.

Pros: parking, outdoor dining, general ambiance

Cons: Small menu

Over priced and under seasoned

by MAVisitor

If you're looking for a new scene and decor, this is the place for you. But if you're looking for something that's going to give your tastebuds a run find another place to dine! The service was great, the people are friendly, and the location is cozy but the food wasn't worth the price. There just wasn't enough flavor for me.

Pros: Parking, service, location

Cons: Food, Choices

I like it!

by kristinem

I don't claim to be a Mexican food conniasseur, but I do tend to enjoy this place. The decor is cute, the service is good, and the food is flavorful without being too salty.
