Complete menu changes daily and includes soup, salad, appetizers, entrees, fresh baked Indian bread and dessert. There is also a weekend brunch buffet. Very special selections and a bigger selection make this brunch a must for Indian food lovers. Kashmir's menu has tremendous variety of meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Nightly specials allow Kashmir's chefs to try new recipes from all the regions on India, both unique and adventurous. Everything on the menu is available for takeout, catering and delivery.

The Scene
Most of us have gotten used to Indian restaurants being bright red and gold; be prepared for Kashmir's soothing off-white and turquoise scheme, set amid a modern setting. Banquette tables, recessed lighting and white table linens finish the posh but cozy look. The breezy outdoor patio, one of Newbury St.'s most popular, features a below street-level area that affords lots of privacy.

The Food
Besides the vast daily buffet, safest options for neophytes would be the special dinners, which cover the bases from mulligatawny soup to puffy samosa turnovers, the choice of two entrees, poori bread and dessert. Indian-food veterans might start with an appetizer sampler, then move on to tandoori mixed grill and malai kofta, vegetable balls cooked in a creamy herb and garlic sauce with crunchy nuts for texture, a signature of good Indian cooking. For dessert, the coconut soup and peshawary naan provides an exotic and well-presented finish.

Key Points

  • Sophisticated
  • Elegant and Romantic
  • Lunch Buffet

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Plates come loaded and are meant to be shared; expect to take home leftovers.
  2. Where to Sit - On the patio, guests can use authentic hookahs, flavored tobacco provided, for a $25 fee.

Decent food, good for a night out

by SouthEnder Z. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,775

Boston has a pretty good saturation of Indian restaurants and this one doesn't stand out much beyond a pretty crowded field. The food is respectable and the ambiance inside the restaurant is nice, once you are seated. The wait can be particularly long, sometimes unbearably so. Still, because they don't deliver we'll actually use the Dining In service to have their food at home.

In a nutshell: if you are in the area, stop in. If not, no big loss.

Great Indian Food

by Michael G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,104

In Boston, Kashmir easily serves up the best Indian cuisine. They have an extensive menu with some surprising dishes such as beef curry, which is definitely a rarity at Indian restaurants. Their buffet on Sundays is an especially good deal with a larger variety than most other restaurants and a high quality of food. I especially love the tiny bite-sized samosas they have available at their buffet, which I could pop like candy. This place is also nice for dates, and I've never had to wait for a table here.

Mediocre food, terrible service

by Jennette M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,887

Kashmir has gotten rave reviews from food critiques, but I found the food to be mediocre. I love Indian food, and my navratan korma was a dissappointment. But the real problem was the service. It was absolutely terrible. They mixed up our orders, forgot to bring us some of our food and drinks, and then charged us double for them. We tried to sort out the bill but no one would help us. We sat there for 20 minutes trying to work this out with people who were not accomodating. Eventually, we left no tip, which is something I have done only once before in my life.

PROS: Pretty atmosphere
CONS: Horrible service, mediocre food

Great ambience.

by Floridatourist

The food here was exellent. The service was very fast. We went on a Friday evening and the restaurant was busy yet very little wait on seating or our meal. Superb lighting and over all fun feel to the place. We often dine out at Indian restaurants in Florida and none can compare to Kashmir. If you enjoy Indian cuisine you will love this place.

Pros: Great atmosphere, food , location, price, waiter with pony tail

Cons: close seating, small table, limited wine list

Worst Service Ever

by linus103079

Decor 5, Food 5, Service 0. My friend had visited us from Florida and Kashmir was recommended to us by a friend. We had a great day out in Boston and at Newbury Street. We initially decided to drive back home, but instead went to Kashmir, again b/c of recommendations from a trustworthy friend. No matter how the food tastes and the restaurant is decked up, if you don't have a service to compliment, then the experience is ruined. This is exactly what happened to us. It ruined our day!!!

Pros: Ambience, Decor

Cons: Service, Service and Service...

DISGUSTING!

by Julia612

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. We have been to every area Indian restaurant except for Kashmir and we will never go again. It was Sunday afternoon; the order was delivered in about 5 minutes so it was not fresh, just reheated. The shrimp masala had 2 pieces of shrimp floating in tomato soup but at least looked like food. The Lamb Kabob was the most disgusting looking, smelling, and tasting dish I have ever encountered. Without exaggeration, it smelled like diesel fuel. You couldn?t even tell what it was. The 2 brown rolls looked like excrement on a bed of rice. I couldn?t even look at it. My boyfriend tried a small piece and gagged. We could not believe that anyone would serve something like this and then charge $50 for giving us nausea. There are many good Indian restaurants, this is not one of them.

Pros: Prompt Seating

Cons: The Food

Do not go!

by VeggFoodie

So my husband wanted to, and I already hated the food here, but I said can't hurt to try to buffet. The worst indian food i've ever had is an understatement. Their milk based desert had actually gone bad, and they continued to serve it even after we told the waiters that it was bad. Since I'm Indian I knew the difference of the tastes, but they didn't care. Really bad food, go to Bindi Bazaar on Mass Ave which is much better if you are looking for decent Indian Food.

Pros: Outdoor seating & newbury st location

Cons: Bad Food

Made a visit to Kashmir on Sunday June 15th for brunch and what a disappointment.

I hadn't been Kashmir's for a long time and won't be going back based on the lack of service and terrible food.

Great food, attentive wait staff

by maxxie

We were promptly seated at a romantic corner table. The waiter was very attentive even though his American was limited. Our drink order was promptly taken and quickly filled. We each had Mulligatawny stew with hot paan. It was delicious, the complex spices were perfect, spicy not too hot. Our meals
came in copper bowls over small sterno fires to keep warm, along with jasmine rice cooked to perfection.
I had shrimp with spinach in a yogurt sauce-it was great! And my husband had chicken in a spicy red sauce with chickpeas and other vegetables. We could not have asked for anything better! Need to reurn very soon!

Pros: romantic ambience, fresh Ingredients

Cons: parking

Lost opportunity

by jfeist

Kashmir is a disappointment. It's in such a prominent location, it should be great, but it's just okay. I've never had a horrible experience there, and only go because it is close and the buffet makes it easy to get in and out quickly. But the food is unadventurous and bland--always a little disappointing, like they are afraid to give us ignorant Americans the real thing. To the owners, I say this: Spice it up! Live a little! We can take it! Don't be ashamed of real Indian food. The Indian cuisines are some of the best in the world, but what you're giving us here isn't a fair representation.

Pros: Buffet makes it a relatively quick experience

Cons: Food is boring.

One of my favorites on Newbury Street, Great Outdoor Seating on a warm day

by desieclipse

This is one of my favorite Newbury street establishments as well as one of my favorite upscale Indian restaurants. Everything I have ordered here has been really excellent, although not as spicy as completely authentic Indian food. The soups are particularly delicious. They also have a really great lunch buffet - generally buffet food is not that great, but at Kashmir it is an extensive spread and the quality is still maintained. The ambiance is modern with traditional Indian touches - it is absolutely beautiful and a cozy romantic spot for a date. I love the outdoor seating as well - it's a great place to people watch! The service inside is excellent - friendly, attentive, and efficient. It is a little slower outside.

Pros: Beautiful ambiance, friendly service, delicious food

Cons: Parking is hard, service outside a little slow

Awful Service on a sunday

by sasha718

I went to Kashmir last Sunday at about 6pm. They brought out amuse bouche, which was nice. However, service was slow. Our waiter did not seem to care about my boyfriend or my experience at the restaurant. We ordered beers that took 10 minutes to appear. Soup & appetizers came on time, but then we waited 20- minutes for entrees. We then sat for another 25 minutes after eating for him to take the food away & bring dessert. We also asked for a side dish that never appeared, but we were charged for it, regardless. However, their food runner was nice & fast. Besides himself, the hostess was the only one with a sense of urgency. The other servers seemed to not care about customer needs. The final straw for us was when the server told us our cc was denied. We gave another card, called card services & they said the supposed declined credit hard had never been authorized. I dont understand what their point was in trying to humiliate us. I do think it had to do with us being an interacial couple ( I am of Indian descent & my bf is white. This was absurd & completely uncalled for. We will not be going to this restaurant again.

It's in Boston... It's about what you'd expect

by drukod

I agree withg the past contributors -the waiters are very self important and off hand. Food is actually good -If you like bland, toned down curry.
I should know, I was born & raised in London, curry capital of the West. Atmosphere was bright, so you could at least see what you were eating, but very exposed and totally unromantic. The buffet is okay at lunchtime. I just wonder what audiance the Kashmir are trying to appeal to?

Simply the Worst

by esseny

Just let me put it this way ! I have tried pakistani/indian food countless times and this is simply the "WORST" of them all. First and the last time I went there the Entree I ordered .. beef was not fully cooked and when I told the waiter of this he took a piece of it and tasted it right over there with his bare hands and was not apologetic. I was just appalled. I wouldn't recommend this to any one. SERVICE IS HORRIBLE as well as the mgmt.

Pros: Location

Cons: Service, food

Sub par food and bad service!

by new2beantown

I suppose the only reason they are still in business is because of their location. Really bad service both times we were there. Rude waiters (with the exception of just one or two) & sub par food. Skip Kashmir and head elsewhere.

Pros: Location

Cons: Service, Waiter etiquette

Nice setting but poor service.

by asommelier

I have been to many restaurants in the U.S. and abroad from hole-in-the-wall shacks to very high end restaurants and never have I encountered such rude service. My friend got stuck in traffic (typical Boston) and I was apologetic to the waiter for her unintentional tardiness. We did order wine/cocktails and appetizers while waiting. My friend finally arrives and apologizes but the wait staff made such a big scene of demanding that we order right away. I wish I could say the food made up for it, but unfortunately, it didn't. The chicken dish I ordered was cold and unappetizing. Everything else was forgettable except for the very poor service. I understand that restaurants have to make money but some things you can't control and a customer who profusely apologizes for being late deserves better treatment.

Cons: Wait staff needs to go to finishing school or at least ask their mothers to teach them some manners.

Overpriced strictly-OK food, pathetic service

by rahuloak

I am Indian and have eaten at tons of Indian restaurants in India and pretty much all over the US. I went to Kashmir for a birthday celebration with some friends and was terribly disappointed. Firstly, we had reserved a table for 7 about 3 days in advance and we still got a table for 6 which was very uncomfortable. The captain was rude and the service was horrible. The ambience was ok - the music was actually too loud. Food wise, the meat was generally overcooked and the Chicken Tikka Masala was not up to standard. The waiters were actually gathered around the bar indulged in chit-chat and we had to wait 15 minutes before someone finally took our order. All in all, a HORRIBLE experience. I would NOT recommend dining here ever!!!

Pros: None

Cons: Food, Ambience, Price and SERVICE!!!

Average Food - Terrible Service

by bklyndiner

There is much better indian food in Boston than Kashmir. The chaat at Gourmet India in the Prudential Food Court is better than theirs. Plus, the service is HORRIBLE. They always bring the appetizers with the main dishes despite our repeated requests to space the meal out. They asked if we wanted them to take the main dishes back to sit in the kitchen while we ate the appetizers...not much of a solution!

Pros: Decent food, nice atmosphere

Cons: Poor service, overpriced, rushed feeling

Bad, Bad, really Bad... :( The food just NOT GOOD at all, I am from San Francisco, CA, I never have Indian food like this bad before, First time in Boston, first time there, I order the Curry Chicken, OMFG, I can't even tast curry, more like tomato chicken, and none of my friends like their food, either. I don't even want to talk about the service... if you want to go there, please think again.

Pros: Nice Location

Boring

by tiptopbob

Not very good traditional fare. Rather bland. There are better Indian places in the Bos/Camb Area for your money. My date says she saw a mouse. I cannot confirm, but I wouldn't be surprised. Wait staff was happy, but lax.

Leave kashmir and their mice to themselves, go somewhere better.

Pros: i liked the chairs

Cons: staff/food/presence of mice

TASTY

Kashmir never fails to leave me with a afterglow. The coconut and tomato soup is DE-LISH. It has great ambience for a romantic date and is also fun for a girls night. I always get different lamb dishes there and i'm never dissapointed.

Bad service; good food.

by pinkpanda7dh

The first time I went here, everything was perfect- the food and service were great. Since then, I have gone 4 more times- each time, the service worsened. After my last experience, I will not go back again. The waiters were not helpful and would not explain the dishes or give recommendations. They also did not bring a dish that was included in the meal I ordered; when I asked about it, they just said, "we don't have any more", but gave no replacement and did NOT even remove it from the bill.
This place does have good food, so I recommend ordering food to-go- but I would not go there, especially not with a date.

Pros: food

Cons: service, price

User review by dpj205

by dpj205

I have been to Kashmir a number of times over the past 2 or so years, and the service is getting worse and worse everytime we go. The staff are disgruntled and rude. Went last weekend and was just apalled. Plates were simply dropped on the table, several requests for water/drinks were ignored, we didn't receive our dessert or coffee that came with the dinner special. Staff just tries to usher you out, and the place was half empty! When we complained to the manager/host, he simply said there was nothing he could do. Not going back anymore.

Pros: Food

Cons: Terrible Service

Great lunch buffet and affordable. A good place to take a friend if you're working in back bay. The staff is friendly and nice, but it's the food that's excellent.
