The Scene
Porter Belly's caters to Brighton's young residents with a quiet, relaxed place to enjoy a pint while watching the big game or sharing a plate of hand-cut fries with a friend. The bar's blonde wooden tables are as easy on the eyes as the well-poured pints of Guinness that everyone seems to be holding. With a soundtrack that's heavy on U2 and casual, friendly bartenders (good luck understanding their brogues), expect a laid-back scene at all hours of the day.

The Draw
The bar's wonderfully chilled-out atmosphere only goes so far; a proper Irish bar needs a stellar beer selection, a well-stocked bar and a satisfying menu of familiar noshes, and Porter's succeeds on all fronts. Over a dozen varieties of beer are on tap, including some hard-to-find imports (Hoegaarden), while the menu features affordable interpretations of hearty shepherd's pie, piquant chicken curry with rice and deliciously greasy fish and chips.

Key Points

  • Wednesday for Open Mic Night
  • Thursday for Singer/Songwriter
  • Friday & Saturday - Live Music

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - After enjoying a few drinks, those looking to cut loose and dance need only head next door to Devlin's.
  2. When to Go - Food is served until 8pm (6pm on Sundays), so show up early if you plan to eat.

Fun Brighton bar

by Jennifer F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,793

I went to Porter Belly's to see a friend's band and had a great night. It did get a little crowded for my taste but it wasn't too bad. There are some seating options but they filled up quickly. It's a good place if you like standing around, drinking a beer and listening to live music - but if you're the type that likes to move, you won't find any dance floor space here. Overall it was a fun night.

Love it

by nunesie23

I love Porter Belly's and I am there with my friends almost every weekend. They always have good bands. The beers are fairly priced, and there is always a beer special. The atmosphere is great...cozy, homey, and relaxed. You couldn't ask for a better local bar. I do have one complaint however, and that is due to the volume that the band plays at. Porter's is a pretty small bar, and once that band starts playing, it is almost to loud. If they could just take it down a notch it would be perfect!

Feckin right

by brofives

Brighton Center is still kinda puritanical with its liquor laws, only one bar has a 2AM license, but its nice to know that I can still get a good mix of a party and a local dive. I went when some band was playing, Iggy Jiggy, and the whole crowd was singin and dancin to U2 cover songs and other classics. The beer is reasonably priced, but its worth it to hear the Irish accents of the lovely ladies who tend bar.

I am new to Brighton, and a couple of locals recommended this place, just a couple of blocks down from my apartment, its worth the trip. I feel like I am at a second home, only I dont have to get the beers.

Pros: Good draft choices,

Cons: You haven't visited it yet, is the con

Best Irish Bar in Boston

by katiefromkerry

This is my favourite bar in boston!!....... There is always something happening there, A good crowd and good craic..... Karaoke on Sunday nights is always fun with all the irish willing to give it a go..... Friday nights are my second favourite night, there is always a nice crowd and a good band playing..... The food there is also amazing...!!! I ate my first steak dinner there and i haven't looked back since, Its actual steak not like the other restaurants that only serve these "steak tips" things..... Also they do a delicious Full Irish Breakfast, we went in one day and it wasn't even on the menu but they were happy to oblige and make us breakfast's anyway.... The staff there are really friendly and especially the owner sean, he's a legend, he took care of our group all summer and made sure we had some great memorable nights there....!!

Pros: Lots of Irish there.

Cons: Closes at 1

NEW MENU in 2007! And new later kitchen hours. The bar has just been re-done including new more comfortable seating. Was already a great bar but the new renovations have only made it better! I can't wait to go have a pint!

Great Energy Diverse Always Fun!

by chetbooms

This Bar offers so much to all age groups. If you want to be part of a "REAL" Irish Bar this is the place. Not a Factory produced tourist wanna be Irish pub. It's the Real Deal. Great atmosphere. Yes a lot of Irish Men during the summer months on vacation but they are just having a grand ol time. Weekends are packed year round with Live muisc Thursday thru Sunday with a mix of all ages and of course lots of young singles and college kids from the Brighton area. Never a cover Charge which is a rarity and beers are so affordable unlike downtown. The bands are always top notch and play great rock n roll. On the weeknights its a nice romantic and calming candle light pub to collect your thoughts and get out of the house. The staff and owners are friendly always looking to make new friends and really pull it all together for the coolest pub around. Its never a dull scene. Late night singing and dancing to bands on tables to acoustic nights with lots of great chatting to weeknights watching some of the best World Cup games and Red Sox games with friends. Don't overlook this Gem of a Bar! This is a bar where the person next to you buys you a beer just to say hello!

Pros: Drink pricing, friendly, Great live music

Cons: you may be forced to have to much fun and be really hungover

Always good craic!

by sb_fido

Porter Belly's is always a great place to meet the friends for a few drinks. It's pretty busy on weeknights right around happy hour as all the local Irish boys are done with work for the day and looking for refreshments! The staff is top rate and the new TV screen above the bar is always tuned to the latest football match. The small size and cozy atmosphere make it a great place for a date too. You may even see one of the band members from the Pogues hanging around...

Pros: excellent staff, good guinness

Cons: Closes at 1am

This is a wonderful pub to relax and have a pint or few and a smoke. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the staff is friendly and helpful. Kitchen closes by eight, so get there early if you want to eat. Parking is also very difficult.

Pros: great atmosphere, friendly staff, inexpensive

Cons: difficult parking, kitchen closes early

Old world charm

The owners (really Irish) created this genuine pub in the heart of the up & coming heart of Brighton. Food is above "pub fare" but not into hoity toity. Tasty and inexpensive. This is a gem.

Cons: Food, Decor, Staff is great

Best around!

by kennykernick

Great place. It's small and relatively quiet (but usually with U2 playing in the background) allowing easy conversation. The staff is very friendly and helpful and you're magically transported from Brighton Center to the Emerald Isle. Great place to hang. great food.

Pros: Atmosphere, Great pub fare, down to earth

Great PLace to Hang

by barnburner1969

In the true spirit of an Irish pub, PB's skips the tellys and offers you a chance to converse with your mates. The food is great pub fare (without the grease) and is reasonably priced. The decor is traditional Irish without being forced. It's the real stuff, not the forced fare you're likely to see around town. Pints aplenty, too.

Only drawback: the kitchen closes pretty early on weekdays.

Pros: food, decor/ staff, beer!

Cons: kitchen closes early
