I adopted a cat which allthough I knew she has just had a litter I was not prepared for her "still in mother mode personality" I have seen it before but not often.

I was so upset I had to return her but she was charging at my 8 yr old cat, not once did he attack her or raise a paw a perfect gentlemen. I was beside myself and called and left 2 messages about the problems I was having and what to do. They never call me back, and come to thing of it they never call back.

I feel just aweful returning her and when I got there a "Jane" was in charge of the return. I wanted to get a more friendly cat found one(which I was going to in the first place" but and she refused and told me to "wait" for my cat to get over his "trauma" of the new cat.
over and over again she told me no he is not ready,
.I admit I thought he was puling his hair out but upon watching him when he washed he kind of tugs at his hair so I should have never told them that. She did not look me in the eye but kept her head down on what she was writing and keep repeating to me to wait, I was so upset,I told her what if the cat I want now is not here she said they would match with another one

, I ask her why and said I have had and rescued strays before for 35 years, what in the hell does she know about cat behavior.!! she was nasty and had a terrible personality.
I was so upset that I filled out a questionaire and I actually wanted to send a letter to the owner about how he hires such aweful people in charge of animals lives.

But I would think he would be the same as them.

I have to mention not once, not once did she say she was sorry it did not work out and not once did she say it wasn';t my fault.

I have not slept in a couple of days because I was so upset.

not once did she ask me about the cat I had returned what about her? she seems not to care only to tell me no no you can't have another one.not once did she ask any questions to let the shelter have more information about personality, and other things like not using the litter box right, the cat was cute, she was not ready to be with other cats, and the cat could not help it, if they are so smart and not letting me adopt another one because of the "trama" my Cat went thru(by the way he is fine) why did they not take into consideration, she just had a litter and would not be suited to be there other cats because she was still in protectice mode?? There was another cat there acting the same way when they took her out of her cage I should bave known better

I have seen it before some new mother cats it takes them time to adjust. But I was hoping she was ok because the cat won my heart and they told me she was fine.
again i am still upset over this experience and that shelter made me feel that I was not capable of taking care of cats which I have done my whole life!
I will never go back there ever and I hope someone will do something about their employees that are a nasty lot.

I hope my cat I returned ist adopted I think about her so much and I did love her if only it was for a little while, She was too aggressive and my cat was fine with her, but she was not. and it was not her fault.
I am glad I could write a review to make me feel better about the whole situation.
I was going to go back there but I pray that they gt some more compassionate people working there people who both care not only about placing cats and dogs in good home but also the future owners they need support and need to be treated with respect and care.

We rescued a dog that was donned family friendly. worked with her for a year, spent a couple thousand between vet visit and training..nothing worked we were told she was taken from her mother too early and it was damaging. then asked if they would consider taking her back and we were told to get her up to date on shots another $300 and then a month later told they were getting 70 puppies and couldn't take her...all they care about is $$ not animals

Welcome to the Hotel California ...

"you can check out any time you like, but you can NEVER leave " (sung by the pets)

One has to wonder what the ratio is of animals who are placed when the folks in charge surely do all they can to prevent these poor cats and dogs from finding loving homes. Rather than to work with potential adopters, certain individuals will fight tooth and nail to prove your home unfit.
Regardless of your living situation (we for example are a married couple in our 40s with 2 college age children in a large home on two acres of lovely property), they will look for reasons to thwart the adoption from taking place. If you work during the day, have an invisible fence the dog isn't yet trained to use, have not hired a nanny to sit with your pets during the day, be prepared to lie. We filled out are application with complete honesty, and were penalized for doing so.

The staff was unfriendly, and to top the cake we were spoken to in a patronizing manner by who I assume was in charge (although I can't say why control would be given to such an individual).

It really is a pity that an organization doing such good in rescuing animals in need does not do more to actually PLACE them in decent and loving homes - or to train their staff in dealing with the public.

I went with my 8 year old daughter ready and willing to adopt a cat after my little one did tons of research on the proper pet for herself. Instead of being greeted in a welcoming fashion, we were told in a demeaning manner that we could only enter the healthy cat staging area only if we were serious about adopting a cat then and there. My girlfriend expressed that this is exactly why we were there. The shelter nazzi grudgingly stated we could proceed to the staging area but again only if we were serious.

There were two chairs in the staging area where people could sit presumably while petting a potential pet. There was also a sign on the wall which stated a cat can be held by one family member at a time. Me and my family took a kitty out of the cage to see if we were compatible with her. We did this after reading the policy on the wall and seeing the chairs. No staff members followed us into the room. In between examining the kitty's compatibility with our family, the same brown haired woman walked by a glass corridor, knocked on the window, scared the kitty out of my girlfriends hands and stated loudly to put the kitty back into the cage.

A few minutes before, another couple walked into our same area with the male figure telling his significant other how could they possibly know if they were going to for sure adopt a cat without looking at them first. Sounds to me like the same message was given to this couple as we were. After this series of events, we quickly exited the staging area.

I confronted this same person and told her how we were just about ready to adopt the kitty and how she had destroyed the potential adoption. I expected some sort of apology or at least an invitation back in to re-visit the pet along with a staff member's supervision. Instead, the woman while all her other staff members looked away, stated we were allowed to pet kitties, but not take them out of the cage. How does someone hold a kitty while its still in its cage?!? also, why are the chairs in the staging area?!?

Bottom line, we left the shelter discouraged and because of my daughter's dissapointment, searching for a pet store that might sell kitties instead.

Can someone tell me why an animal shelter such as this exists with someone in charge of it that discourages adoptions? Not a place I'd recommend you taking your kid to unless you want them to learn about why they're not good enough to a adopt a pet.

We adopted a cat from this shelter. The cat is healthy and fairly well trained, but the shelter offered a neutering rebate that only covered the actual surgery, neglecting necessities such as anesthesia, while purposely misleading customers by claiming it offered a "free" neutering procedure. Additionally, the woman at the front desk was considerably rude when I posed questions about the cat's health, food, etc.

I am so suprised at all the negative reviews. I had always heard this was a top-notch shelter, and my own experience was 100% positive. I adopted a sweet little terrier mix from NEAS several years ago. Yes, they asked a LOT of questions to insure I was fit to adopt. But unlike these people who were insulted, I thought it was a good thing! They clearly take the job of placing pets very, very seriously. They gave me as much information and history on my dog as possible before sending us off and wishing us well. My dog has been the light of my life and every year on his birthday I send a donation to this wonderful shelter as a thank-you for taking such good care of him until he found a home with me.

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews -- we adopted a kitty yesterday and had no problems. The staff was friendly and efficient, and the entire adoption took less than an hour. (From these reviews, we expected a long interrogation and piles of paperwork!) They make it easy to get to know the cats; there are "cat community rooms," and you can open the adult cats' cages to interact with them. The shelter seemed clean and the cats were well-cared-for -- they all had clean cages, blankets, food and toys. I'd adopt from them again in a second.

If you absolutely don't want to adopt from them for whatever reason, try PALS Peabody (at PetSmart just up Highland Ave.)

It's not by accident that all over the internet, you will find complaints about the STAFF at this facility. I had a horrible experience with them - and they get downright personal.

I dealt with a woman there who actually baited me into an argument. That was bad enough. But then she actually called our home to give me more grief. I couldn't believe it. Clearly, there is no one holding staff responsible for their behavior, which makes me fear for the animals.

The whole place is full of irritable, innappropriate unaccountable workers with major inadequacy issues who only feel "powerful" when they're giving people who love animals a hard time.

Very troubling, very dismaying, very scary. Yes, that it - scary.

Cruel and inhumane to families. Their adoption process is arbitrary and the staff is plain mean. After waiting four hours to meet a dog that we were told was available to adopt, even after filling in the paperwork AND presenting the dog's card we were turned away because "they had another family in mind". It didn't matter that we were there and they weren't, we were just told "too bad go home."

It has nothing to do with the quality of the person looking to adtop, it has everything to do with their turnover rate. The "volunteer" told me they have so many people coming in to adopt that we didn't matter.

Don't go to Northeast Animal shelter if you want to be treated with respect, and most of all don't go there if you have a soft heart, because they will stomp all over it.

We adopted a beautiful dog from this shelter a few days ago. We were almost put off from going there at all because of these reviews, but we had absolutely no problems and found that the whole experience was pretty easy. We bought the necessary paperwork, and were given time with the dog we were interested in prior to our interview. Our dog was not spayed, but we were given a list of vets throughout the greater boston area that we could take her to for it to get done and the shelter would pay. We had no problems at all and we now have a great dog, so I wouldn't want these reviews to put anyone off from going there.

In June, 2010, my husband and I visited NEAS to possibly adopt a 6 year old Shiz Tzu dog we had seen on line for adoption. We have previously had one of these wonderful dogs, and wanted another. P.J. was adorable, but growled when I tried to pick him up. It was explained that he came from a home with young children, and was possibly treated roughly. The attendant appeared knowledgeable and was friendly. She told us P.J. had only been in the shelter for 3 or 4 days, and they hadn't tested him for heart worm yet. Because of that, we were given a discount, since we would have to take him to our vet for this. We were told P.J. was due for all innoculations at the end of June.
We agreed to adopt him and try to work with what seemed like some behavioral issues. We were not told that he had had no veterinary exam, something we felt should be a no-brainer when an animal is put up for adoption. As soon as we got home, I was petting P.J., and noticed large lumps under his neck. We took him to the vet immediately, and were told that P.J. has lymphoma, a common, and often deadly cancer in middle-aged dogs. This problem would have been noticed by a vet immediately, or even a vet tech, or anyone who did even a cursory examination of the dog. I did not examine the dog at NEAS, because I assumed (never assume) that someone else had. Unconscionable!!-this must change! No animal should be put up for adoption without a vet exam. If you can't afford to hire a vet for this, at least a vet tech should be on site. These animals should be evaluated physically and behaviorally before being put up for adoption.

I just had a terrible experience with a volunteer at NEAS. I wanted to adopt a small dog. I found one I liked. I was told I had to go home to get my other 5 mo dog at home. When I brought my dog back I was placed in a room with both dogs. My dog basically ignored the small dog. Because the small dog was much more active than my current dog I was denied adoption because the volunteer thought they would be incompatible. As I was about to leave I was told the little dog I wanted to adopt was spoken for by someone over the phone. Why did they even bother letting me see & get attached to the little dog? I think the whole system is chaotic at best at NEAS. It is clean there & the dogs look happy & cared for but their whole system of paper work & interview is terrible.

North East Animal Shelter is by far the worst animal shelter in New England. Their Staff members are idiotic and know absolutely NOTHING about animals. They were rude to my family, threatened to take my current dog away from us because she was not spayed and tried to tell me it is a law in MA to have your animals spayed. And it's NOT okay for me to have an unspayed dog for medical reasons, but its OKAY for them to let me adopt an unspayed dog from their clinic? I agree in spay/neuter for ALL animals (with the exception of medical reasons) as all the shelters do, but DO NOT try and let someone adopt an unspayed/neuter dog if your so against owners keeping theirs unspayed. The women I dealt with knew nothing about dogs behaviors, as I am a dog trainer, and can spot aggression in an animal in a second. These people are "animal lovers" not "animal behaviorist" and inexperienced volunteers should not be able to deal with people who want to adopt an animal. North East Animal Shelter is hypocritical and their staff members are rude and inexperienced.

Some people do not deserve to have the privilege of owning an animal, I think all reading this will agree. If you get turned down, the shelter had a good reason. They want to place these animals in loving homes so they can make room for more unwanted, neglected and abused animals. If you don't make the cut, it's because there was a valid reason. Stop whining about it. If you are not a good fit for the dog/cat, they have every right to turn you down or refer you to a different animal. Sometimes, stubborn jerks want what they want and don't know how to be rational, and blow up and act all nasty and condescending - which makes the shelter 'glad' they turned down this particular person to begin with. Go to a pet store if you want a quick in and out. The shelter is conducting adoptions here..... and they are very successful at it - I might add!

Visited Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) (Salem, MA) on March 27, 2010. Returned on Mar 29th. I WAS hoping to adopt a cat; but my experience was utterly shattering!!! I went online Sunday evening to check out more cats at NEAS. Saw a beautiful Senior Cat for adoption ($25). This made me go back Monday to apply for her. Because I did not have my own cats papers with me--I was refused to adopt this cat at that time--fine. I did give 3 Vet names that I had taken my cat to for shots, etc. Jane could not get hold of Vet from Petco that my cat visited last. I went home to find my cats papers. Later that evening (6pm) I got a call from Angela and was interrogated about my relationship with a friend and telling me she felt I could not have a cat. If I wanted to come back the next day she would have more questions for me; including questions about my friend--called bothered me all week. She was insulting and rude. I was treated like a criminal !!!. Went back today, April 5, 2010, asked for her. When I asked for her & she came out front got a book to look me up she dismissed herself and went in to talk to director. After awhile director came out to talk to me and I requested Angela to be present with us. We discussed phone call, etc. She denied what I said and stated she writes everything down that she says when making calls. I asked her to get paper--She did not--ignored my request. Her reason for dening me adoption of a cat was because they denied my friend and figured I was getting cat for this person. Totally wrong !!! I did not know my friend went there and was refused a cat prior to my visit. Because we live across the street, are friends, and she was denied--Angela & Jane took it upon themselves to decide I was adopting for someone else. Assumtion--guilty with out cause--the arrogance of workers within a facility judging me; to repute, to decide my good name and character--to decide I am a LIAR !!! How dare they!!! I was disappointed that the cat I wanted was gone and that I could have given this cat a good home. ALSO, I will not deal with NE Animal Shelter. I feel sorry for other animals within this shelter--so many could have good homes--but the arrogance of some workers hurts these animals from being adopted. Including Pricing must be watched closely--the cat I was to adopt that Mon. was a senior cat for $25--Next the cat got younger and they wanted $75. This cat was on line and the paper work (Card) on glass door for $25 with age, etc. But price went up ??? Trying to cheat me. Totally Dissatisfied Adopter Caring Human. Thanks NEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEAS - Where does it state what information you request when you come into a shelter. Who does have the right to judge you, etc.

I adopted two beautiful kitties from the HAS 19 years ago. I had my little boy 16 years and my little girl I just lost last week, she was almost 20; it broke my heart to lose them, I am still not over it. I will be back in time but for right now I need to remember all the unconditional love, the sweet faces, the playful fun, these were both happy healthy kitties from day one. I had a wonderful 20 years thanks to the Northeast Animal Shelter, they are wonderful.

NEAS shelter was started in 1976 and until last year it operated out of the basement of a veterinary clinic. We adopted a wonderful dog who gave us years of enjoyment. In 2008 NEAS opened a new 13,000 sf facility that is wonderful, airy, and clean. I read that one person reported a bad experience, but on my visits I am always warmly greeted and feel the staff is truly concerned about the welfare of the animals. They have a lot of different "counselors" and some are more friendly than others. I highly recommend NEAS as a first stop for anyone wanting to adopt a dog or cat. They also get a lot of puppies, which don't last long before they are adopted.

I have never in my life had such a negative experience dealing with anyone as I have in dealing with the staff at NEAS. When I visited the shelter, the staff was rude, unfriendly and completly deaming. One women, unsure of her name, about 5'7, brown eyes, curly brown hair, mid thirties, was particularly horrible. For no apparent reason, she chose to talk down to me and accuse me of not being fit to adopt. This came as a shock to me as I have adopted from the shelter in the past, own a home with a large fenced in yard, live on a dead end road and have a large family of dog lovers. It is unfortuante that she chose to treat me and other so terribly because in the end, it was a puppy that was not able to be adopted by a great family.

I have gone here a couple of times to get kittens. The service is top notch, and the staff is very friendly. When getting an animal here the animal always come first. They make sure that the animal is going to be well cared for and have plenty of space to play. They take very good care of all the animals here. There is always a large selection of pets to choose from, and if you don't see what you were looking for they will try to find it for you.

What I like about the North East Animal Shelter is that they are a no kill animal shelter. The staff all work hard to help find homes for the kittens & cats, puppies & dog that people bring them for adoption. The center is super clean everyone is super nice. They are very greatful for any type of donations in cash or pet food and pet supplies or office supply donations. These pets are always well cared for & played with during the day. Vet on site in case of medical needs. Consider them for your next pet dontion or pet adoption.
