Umi Salon

Newbury Street has become a runway for anyone with a pair of scissors, a blow dryer, and an attitude. Not the case with the group at Umi. I was so impressed with the level of service and quality of work done by the stylists that I felt that I must share it with other Citysearch readers, as this was how I found Umi. My compliments to Jeffrey, the owner, who is an absolute gentleman, and a fabulous leader, as can be seen through the way staff interacts with him, as well as the way he makes everyone in the salon feel welcome and at home. I am happy to recommend this not only as a great salon, but also as a model for all businesses to admire.

If you can look passed the rude receptionists, the stylist John, at UMI, was worth going to. He did a wonderful job on my hair style for my wedding.

The prices on their web site are incorrect. You need to call and verify prices before you make an appoitment.

The stylists and receptionists do not know the first thing about customer services, because none of them care if you are repeat business/repeat customer. It is too bad because John has quite a bit to offer.

Like a fine wine, Umi shines. Wonderful, attentive service, and beautiful hair- not just on myself, but everywhere my eyes wandered, something worth seeing was happening. No detail was left behind- even the shampoo experience was second to none.

Having heard of her over and over,I finally found her at Umi,and all the accolades are true,she's no nonsense and skilled.I felt she really listened to me. No "Newbury street" attitude here,I got what I wanted and also got educated about what I have been trying to explain to countless other stylists for years!!! My hair has been a problem to most colorists,but she told me why and I felt I could trust her.She also told me after not to hesitate to call if there is any problems!!!! Who does that??? There also seemed to be a relaxed ,fun attitude among her and her co workers which takes the edge off. I'm definately going back, Helen is cool!!!

There is no way to explain the intensity of the buzz in this salon. It is reserved, intense, and inspiring. These people love what they do, obviously. Im glad I discovered this salon, and am happy to have had Liz cut my hair. She provided me with a wonderful insight to the art of cutting hair, which I found so exciting. She is a gem, and is a part of an exciting team. I wish I felt this way about my profession!

Everyone knows that Umi is the salon to go to if you want a great hairstylist, but I have to say that what impresses me is the fact that stylists there KNOW what they are talking about- I never knew that there is a design history to haircuts I think that is so interesting and Im glad that my stylist is so into it; it makes for a great experience, and obviously great haircutting!

I'd seen in several media that Umi came highly recommended. The comments about Beth caught my eye so I got an appointment with her and, ultimately, got one of the best cuts I've ever had. She's right up there with my two other favorite hair dressers: one in NY and the other in Paris, so that's saying something!

They are doing some beautiful haircuts there. I moved recently from L.A. and would recommend this salon to anyone back home. Very creative and beautiful haircutting. Beth did a beautiful job on my here.Only one thing is that I though my color was average not on the par with their haircutting. It was not terrible it just was not amazing like the haircut. It was not done by the girl Beth who did my hair.But for a cut A+++++++++ Oh yea they dont overbook!!!!!!!!! Very professional.

Amazing 1st time experience. The interior is beautiful-pristine white, laid-back, clean & refreshing. The staff was very accomodating, fitting me into their schedule even though I didn't have an appointment! While washing my hair, they surprised me w/ a small head massage and when I walked back to my hairdresser, a stand w/ a magazine & lemon-flavored sanpellegrino had been set before me. My hairdresser Beth was also excellent-very meticulous, very attentive to my needs & yet very relaxed. I was really impressed by how "in sync" we were-it was as if she could read my mind during the entire experience-she knew just when to explain what she was doing and when to ask me for my opinion. She worked on my hair until she KNEW that I was completely satisfied. I will definitely be back again-thanks so much again Beth! I love this haircut!

I found Umi Salon on citysearch, and felt I had to return here to express how impressed I felt about my experience. I had just moved to Boston from NYC, and thought I was going to have to compromise a bit, but not the case here. Every part of my visit was a delight, and I would not hesitate to spread the word... these stylists are first class, very talented, and worth the wait. Keep an eye out for Jeffrey- He's a dream....

Aside from the fact that the staff had an attitude, I hated what they did to my hair. They seem to think they know what I want better than I do myself, and they charge a small fortune. They only thing I kinda liked was the interior, but what seemed cool turned out to be cold and uninviting.

This is the best salon on the entire east coast, not just Boston. I love the feeling of this salon, ant the staff are second to none. Obviously, this is a salon that is serious about hair, instead of attitude. I love it, and recommend it highly.

I had to try Umi because I hear so much about it from so many different people... I admit I was curious as to why the salon is so popular. I mean, how great can a hair salon be? Well, I got an incredible haircut, and I loved the fact that it didn't feel like a typical hair salon, like I was definately in the right place, which I think is really special. Everyone there was down to earth and really talented.

See Jeffrey, if you can... He's absolutely incredible! I am so amazed at the way he does what he does... it's a gift, truly. Great salon, atmosphere, service, all around quality... 5 stars! This salon has something really special going for it. The feeling of the place is so right, not like other salons. It's this big open studio where really cool things happen, and the stylists and clients mix and interact with ease. The way they approach doing hair is SO cool... they make it an interesting subject, and that is something I've never experienced before. I made a point to express this to Jeffrey, the owner, and instead of having a big ego about it, like all owners seem to, he smiled, went on to talk about his admiration for the stylists and their talents, and thanked me generously. About ten minutes later, Jeffrey invited me to his chair for a complimentary re-style/blow dry. See, I didn't have an appointment that day. I was just waiting for someone else. Now THAT"S cool...

I recently moved here from NYC, and was so stressed about finding a hairdresser in Boston, because I'd been seeing a great stylist for years. Well, I found Umi on citysearch and was impressed with the reviews, so I tried it. I went to Jeffrey, and let me tell you, it was such a refief... in fact, I wish I new about him earlier! I'd have gone out of my way to make the trip to his salon- his color work is flawless, and I cannot say enough about my haircut. AND, he's a perfect gentleman.

I was really excited to get my hair cut in a place where the stylists were knowlegable and attentive. I ended up getting my hair cut differenty than what I was intending to do, which turned out to be a great idea. My visit was a nice change from what I've experienced in other salons.

I've been to Umi a few times now, and felt that I had to share with other readers how I feel about this salon, because I've been to many through the years, and, like a favorite restaraunt or boutique, it just cannot be compared to any other salon in Boston. These stylists clearly have an understanding of what they are doing, and always seem to deliver beautiful work. It's even a pleasure waiting around, watching other people get their hair styled. I alwas have a really good experience at this salon... the atmosphere is stylish and confident, and absent of unnecessary attiude.

I had to wait for a couple of weeks to get an appointment with Jeffrey, and I'm so glad I did. My visit was fun, interesting, informative, and stress-free. I learned more about my own hair in one hour with him than I've ever learned in the last 15 years of getting my hair done elsewhere, and I've been in so-called "best" salons too many times to mention. BRAVO!

I just recently visited Umi salon, as I've heard so much about it, and I have to say that it was actually better than I expected. The attention to detail and care my stylist put into my haircut was absolutely impressive, even inspiring, and my color was great because it feels like it belongs to me, not like I just had the trend of the hour done. They took time making the best desicion for me, which was great. The place has a really great vibe, too...

Umi salon is average to below average.

There were so many postive reviews about this salon posted that i decided to try umi salon for myself having moved recently from NYC where as a manhattanite I used city search as often as everyone else to review establishments.

A stylist turned my blond tresses GREY! having had my hair highlighted for 15 years this was just unbelievable, worse off she did not see a problem with it! Then proceeded to tell me "well, I dont think I can make you happy". WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would be happy with grey hair!!

I was VERY dissapointed--all should proceed with caution.

I am usually disappointed whenever I go to a popular salon in Boston, because the reputation always seems to be exagerated, and the experience not up to par. But I must say that Umi is a salon that is actually as good as people say it is, and I am happy to share with all readers my excitement to have finally visited Umi. The staff are wonderful, and how can I ever express how wonderful Jeffrey Dauksevich is? Truly a special group of very gifted people.

This salon is exactly what Boston needed. Attitude free, great service, and BEAUTIFUL work. Although I did not see the owner for services, he went out of his way to welcome me to the salon, and made me feel at home there. My stylist Isabel was great, and I am completely satisfied with the service.

I always have a great experience at Umi. I go to Jeffrey for haircuts, and have seen other stylists for color and trims when I can't get in with Jeffrey, and it's always great. It's buzzing, cool, and free of all the usual nonsense; I always feel like I'm in the right place. There is always something new happening there. I am a true fan.

not only was my experience from beginning to end just amazing - truly the best i've had, but i've never had such a great cut. all the stylists are incredibly talented and surprisingly welcoming, which is not what you'd expect when visiting this chic lower newbury locale. the receptionists are all so friendly and helpful. totally sophisticated and hip. i have appointments every couple of weeks and so should you.

Like everyone else in Boston, I have been to a ton of the salons on newbury street. After to going to Umi salon I finally feel like my search is over. My stylist listened to everything that I had to say and gave me excactly what I wanted. It was nice to find a place with a cool interior and a young friendly staff. I definitely recommend this salon to others!

I have been a customer at Umi Salon for nearly a year now and have nothing but good things to say about the place. I have had 3 different stylists cut my hair. They have helped me get the right product for my hair which has made all the difference in the world. I have naturally curly hair.There is a girl there named Beth who washes hair that gives a phenominal head massage while shampoing your hair. A stylist named Marguerite has cut and colored my hair the past 3 months and I have been extremely happy with her professionlism and skill. I recommend UMI highly. It is a bit pricey but well worth it.

Umi is one of the best indoor atmospheres in the city of Boston. With its white yet shapely interior, and beautiful, fresh-feeling light, Umi treats its clients to relaxtion and incredible talent. Marguerite did my hair at Umi. She was really interested in me, and completely obeyed every wish i had for my final hairstyle. After years of searching for a stylist who could listen to me and really end up with the results i want, having Marguerite cut my hair was a huge breath of fresh air. She gave me a sexy mod hair cut that i had always requested but never got. I even brought my very hard-to-please boyfriend in to have Marguerite cut it, and now he loves his hair.
