Count me as another big Helen fan!
by Tristan D.
I think I was Helen's next client as "Fed Up I" got her cut and color. I don't think Helen's behavior was inappropriate, and I appreciated that she was aware of running late and touched base with me. Furthermore, I don't usually notice these things, but I mentioned to Helen how much I liked the color she had given the person who was before me. "Fed" should have spoken up if she wasn't getting what she wanted in her cut, IMHO.
Now then, I've gone to Savvy for almost three years now, and I really like it, and Helen. I've moved from working in Harvard Square to the Back Bay, but I still make the trip to Inman Square.

Savvy is real style for real people like us..
by J C.
As a long-term client of Savvy with a long history of getting cut, colored, conditioned and styled by Helen, I must post about the special attention, uncontrived attitude and superlative service I have experienced over the years. I am always happy with the work Helen does (and we've tried some varied style and color changes!). She is willing to spend time perfecting a style and offers clients options for new styles they may not have considered. She is an expert colorist too and customizes colors to enhance each clients' skin tone and style. She has great insight into fashion and creating a total "look"; something I think is very valuable to find in a stylist: it is truly "hair therapy" from the stimulating shampoo to the deep conditioning treatments and the friendly conversation. Each client typically leaves feeling cared for, neatly and carefully groomed and much brighter for the experience!

Savvy Hair Design is world-class without all the fluff.
by Todd W.
Savvy Hair Design is a remarkably reasonable, inexpensive salon that has gone above and beyond my high expectations, and I'm quite critical in general, having been in the service industry myself as well as having tried out countless places to get my hair cut. At Savvy I consistently get a first-rate haircut and it grows in well each time. I will surely miss having found this veritable sanctuary as I soon have to move across country for a job. Savvy isn't a fancy place, it's casual and friendly. If there were such a thing as "comfort hair", this place does it.
Not once have I ever felt bad, guilty or inadequate when I'm there, and those were the feelings I would inevitably get each time I would visit my former salon (where I paid almost 3 times more for a cut). It makes absolutely no sense that so many people seem to equate a good hair salon with pretentiousness and downright rudeness and I am ticked off at myself for being a sucker for so long. Going to the overpriced frou frou hair factory that I had been patronizing for so many years before discovering this place was so wrong. For the past 5 years I've been having Helen cut my hair and I really do look forward to it because it has always been a pleasant experience. She's a skilled cutter and pays close attention to nuances, details and the subtle differences that make my style what it is. She listens, which seems like a rare quality in hairdressers from what I've experienced. I seriously become mush when her hands give me the most awesome head massage at the sink which, come to think of it, might be what I'm really thinking about as I write this. I can not afford to have bad-looking hair, though, and it's just a big bonus that the shampoo I get is heavenly. Helen also values my time and is invariably as professional, respectful, lively, cheerful and attentive as they come. She'll also call me if she gets a cancellation when I call for an appointment at the last minute if she's booked when I call. I am not looking forward to searching for a new place to go once I've gotten settled in my new digs, but maybe, just maybe, my luck will stay the same. I'm doubtful but hopeful because now I know that a place like this can actually, and does exist.
The only caveats are that the salon doesn't take plastic (I almost never carry cash), parking on Cambridge St. can be a challenge, you will often get the answering machine when you call (though they're prompt with a call back), you can't get a haircut on Sunday and Monday because they're closed and before your first time there you should call to make sure you have the right address because they have moved a few blocks down the street from their original location (from 1462 to 1232). Overall, though, Savvy Hair Design is a superlative find and I will miss going there very much!

An excellent Hair Salon
by Larry H.
Helen and Richard are amazingly thorough, thoughtful, and attentive stylists. After trying a whole bunch of salons in Cambridge and on Newbury street, I started coming to Savvy and have been a satisfied customer for over 7 years. And they are embarassingly low priced for the service you get!

At Savvy Hair I have finally found that magical "stylist-client" relationship that I thought only existed in movies. I can go, sit down and chat happily with my regular stylist, who actually remembers me and what we talked about last time I was there. She also remembers the cut style that I like, and how my hair reacts to certain styles. I know I will always walk out happy.
