Great place for a drink with a date, a few friends, or even a small party. Nice atmosphere, something a little different than most places in the city. Drinks are reasonably priced and the food is really good. Definitely try Silvertone's own raspberry-infused vodka... it's delicious but pretty deadly.

Silvertone is a basement bar and restaurant in the heart of downtown Boston. Just up from Downtown Crossing, you'd miss it if you were walking quickly up Bromfield.

Something about descending down into the bar gives it a sort of speakeasy, loungy feel, and the retro vibe makes for great atmosphere. It's also kind of cool to be able to see the place from above as you go in. Because it's a basement there are no windows but it doesn't feel cramped. It's well lit and the smoking ban helps quite a bit.

The calamari appetizer is particularly good, and so is the grilled cheese, and the mac and cheese. It gets pretty crowded pretty quick but it's easy to chill there.

I know exactly what I want when I arrive at silvertones?meat, mashed potatoes, fresh salad, lots of wine, and the fantastic waiter with black framed glasses. I usually go here with my lady friends so we can unwind and recharge for the weekend. We haven??t had to wait long for a table and once an order is in it arrives promptly. The booths have tall backs, which create some privacy for impolite conversations or snuggling with your honeybun, but like I said?I come here with my lady friends. Bottles of wine are affordable and delicious. I also recommend the macaroni and cheese.

I used to come to Silvertone's all the time when I lived in Beacon Hill. It's a little hard to find at first, since it's in the basement. When you do discover it, you realize how much you like the cocktails and the food. It's not fancy but consistent and a good way to get something in your stomach especially when you are bar hopping on a weekend or even after work. Location cant be beat. My only complaint is that it can and does get quite loud and the waitstaff are ofter stretched thin when they get full. Which is often!

Don't let the renovated basement vibe at Silvertone fool you, this is one Boston spot that can't be missed. This isn't the kind of restaurant where you need your iPhone to decipher ingredients: the menu boasts a super creamy mac and cheese, a roast chicken better than your mom's, and steak tips that garnered awards from local pubs for the last umpteen years. It's crowded and a little cramped, but the food and cocktails are totally worth rubbing elbows with your new neighbors. The wine list starts at just $6, and many bottles have very little mark up over retail.

I have become a regular at Silvertone. As someone who works in downtown Boston, I am always looking for a good lunch spot. Their food is delicious, affordable, and they have a great bar selection. Service is spot-on and consistent, and it is fun whether you go on a weekday for lunch, or on a Saturday night for drinks with friends.

Silvertone is a great place to eat if looking for good prices. Drinks are very affordable as well. The third time I went in, the bartenders knew my name and drink of choice. Very cool place in the financial district.

Pros: Prices

This place is a good after work date place. The prices are good for comfort food, although I would say the the menu is pretty small. The ambiance is nice. There is usually a long wait for a table on a Thur. or Fri. night.

The place is Under Ground - Hence, no windows. Typical Pub Fare, Dark. Service is okay. Prices are good. Locate is okay, Downtown but not in the most "happening" area of downtown Boston. Close to the "T".

I thought the place was So So. Very small (bathroom is the size of a refrigerator), very dark, long wait to be seated and very crowded on a thursday night. Definitly NOT the place to go in party more then 4. Some what difficult to get a drink order when the bar area is jam packed with thirsty happy hour goers and people dining at the bar. The service was nothing to brag or write home about. I ordered the 1/2 chicken with fries and a salad. I am a huge chicken fan and felt that it was slightly over cooked. Waaay to much work for a meesly peice of chicken. The 2 best qualities are the speed in which they deliver there food and the slightly below average prices. Will I go again? Depends what friend will drag me there, but possibly for a beer!!!

I loved the music too, i always wanted to try swing dancin. But this hip little area is def gonna be my new fav lil place.

I've been there three times for dinner and was always very satisfied with the food and service, not to mention unbeatable prices. The $10 steak tips comes with a generous salad, porkchops were heavenly, and the fish special I had the last time was very good. Steak tips tends to be on the dry side, though, maybe ask for 'rare' to compensate. Always had a professional waiter, never had or witnessed any attitude or drama. My only regret is that they don' t have dessert - not even ice cream. My hope is that one day they will, and the meal will be perfect. I am definitely looking forward to the next meal at Silvertone.

I would have expected the elitist attitude of Silvertone's hostess "Mo" to come from an exclusive, upscale restaurant in New York City, NOT from a place like Silvertone's. She was on some sort of high and mighty kick. We were a party of three, with two more joining us for drinks later in the evening. I put in our name for a table of three and was told the wait was an hour. So at that point I told her, make it for five- by the time we sit the other two would join us. Well 45 minutes later she tells us our table is ready and is everyone in our party here. Well, we were still waiting on two. So she refused to seat us at a table for five and instead sat a couple at a large table. What I didn't enjoy was her snobby response to me: "You've been going back and forth with this 3-5-3-5 business, haven't you?" As if I was making it up to get a table sooner?!? Excuse me, who do you think you are, Mz. Hostess? Apparently "Mo" forgot her job was to be a HOSTESS, which, by definition, means she should be accommodating and welcoming. So we ended up eating at the bar, the bartenders were a hoot- very nice, and almost made up for the hostess' lack of, well, hostessing. The food was only ok. I was expecting more of a "wow" factor. My advice? Don't go when there is a crowd, and when Mo is hostessing, eat at the bar.

Last year I went on a first date at Silvertone... and almost one year later we're still together. So perhaps I might be a little too biased to give a review but none the less here I am. Now living in Chicago, I miss the nights I'd get off work, dash quickly over to Sivertone, sit down with my co-workers and order a bottle of Vueve for a mere 50 dollars! Oh so quickly the stress of the night dwindled away! The night of the first date was some sort of breast cancer fundraiser/ anniversary party and a party it was! Since April is only a few months away we were hoping to have a wonderful anniversary, however we can't remember the actual date. So here I am writing a review hoping that someone who knows this info is randomly reading this review and will help a poor romatic out. And for everyone else- definately check this place out!!!

Silvertone is one of my favorites. The steak tips are the best I've had and very reasonable. The wine list has a great selection and a unique pricing policy, $10 over cost. For $30 you get a bottle that could be $55 in another place. Although best known for their Mac & Cheese and Meatloaf, I also suggest checking out other items on the menu as well. For a while I was in the habit of just trying something new, never had a bad meal. The bartenders are smooth and professional, no rookies here. It can be crowded, though they have some of the most generous booths in town. Great for lunch also.

I have visited Silvertone several times with gay friends and they have never been mistreated so I can't speak to that however, as a large woman I have experienced mistreatment there. Until now I have not told anyone but my shrink this, but the last time I was in Silvertone I was tied up in the back room and force-fed mac n' cheese. It was a traumatic experience. Yet strangely delicious too. My point is that if you go there you should either (a) go with friends or (b)not be fat. I am working with my shrink to get past this experience. Omigod the raspberry martinis are so good, if you go get sugar on the glass. Mmmmm.

Credibility lost. I see the story has changed to support your own brand of hate crimes. If I am to understand this correctly, now ?hyiy? is present at the bar to hear the horrible tirade of the lecherous bigoted bartender. Why on earth would you allow that to go on? Now you?re slamming the Bible belt? Hmmm there seems to be a pattern here with this fraction of the group and their experiences at restaurants/bars? Hmmm. I?ll pray for ya. That?s it! No more. You have heard the last of me in this forum on this subject. To the public please read with an open mind. If you would like to continue this discourse you know how to find me.

...a nurse, two med students, an opera singer, a successful entrepreneur, a physician, and one unemployed guy go into a bar?

Well if the bar happens to be Silvertone, then they DO get harassed by the bartender trying to pick up the one female in their predominantly-gay party.

Unlike the last few reviewers to post on this matter, I actually WAS present when the bartender decided to ask my friend (the straight female who was in town with her boyfriend) what she was doing with that group of f-gs. Recent commentary on this matter--by conjecturing third parties--has decided to fixate on red herrings like the use of the word "idiotic" or personal testimonies of continued patronage in their defense of the restaurant. A great mac 'n cheese (which I didn't taste - I visually filled up on cottage cheese from the lady holding her shirt open and gyrating for the bartender's flashlight) doesn't negate that this establishment hires people who feel comfortable tossing out these sorts of offensive and incendiary comments. I thought I left hospitality like this back home in the Bible belt. >>>
P.S. As for the 25% tip--I daresay it would not have been the same had he paid AFTER we learned what was said.>>>>>>>>STEER CLEAR, QUE*RS!

This restaurant is truly one of the best places in Boston to eat, drink and be merry. I just read a few of the most recent reviews that referred to discriminating bartenders and bad service. I cannot speak to either of those allegations but I can just say that I have NEVER had a bad experience at Silvertone. I dine at Silvertone at least 4 times a month (lunch and dinner) and have hosted a party in their back room. Silvertone has one of the friendliest staff's around and not to mention great meatloaf and mac &cheese! They are definitely worth going back for! Bottom line, I would strongly recommend giving this place a second chance (or in many cases, 10th, 11th, 12th etc chance:)).

Initially, I thought not to respond to these dangerous allegations and then reconsidered solely to defuse possible misconceptions of any unsuspecting potential GUEST of Silvertone who might have been infected by this poor review. I say Guest simply because everyone is welcome, everyone! I personally assess individuals according to what they say and do. Not their sexual orientation, gender or religion. After all, words and actions are the only two things we truly own, everything else fades away. And for this reason I must respond, not to you (anonymous writer) but to the public at large. First, let me say to the group who felt comfortable enough to share Silvertone with others, thank you and we will see you again soon. We have more Duval Leroy and will leave a bottle set aside for your next visit. Thank you for the 25% tip and the warm wishes for a Happy New Year. It?s a shame everyone in your party was not as enthused. I hope you chose your company for your New Years festivities well. I trust you had no idea a member of your party, on the evening in question, was capable of calling anyone an ?Idiotic person of color? or insinuate that the couple that approached the bar would stand for an outrageously damming statement from any bartender/person without defending the honor of their guests. And to the most important thing, everyone please be aware of third party information. In the ?He said, She said? game, sometimes people get hurt. All too often, what starts out as one thing quickly turns into something completely different. If your at ?The Tone? and see a flashlight streaming into a crowd coupled with a ?woooo? it means we are highlighting people having fun, dancing or what ever. Not some lecherous act to get a better view of breast. To the guy doing the funky chicken, no harm no foul (pun intended). There it?s all been said. No hard feelings, in fact I was so moved by this event I wrote a song, check it out at myspace/8734808 entitled? If I were you?

Hello to all of you who have supported us for the past 10 years and those we hope to meet in the coming 10. Normally, I would let this sort of thing slide, but these last two reviews need to be addressed.

First Review- Silvertone is not in the habit of discriminating against anyone based on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation. In fact, the first two years we were open people thought we were a gay bar because we are downstairs (can't see in) and the men leaving were so handsome. My brother is gay, as are most of my closest friends. My belief is he knew your friend (a girl?). I will look into this allegation and if I find it bears weight, the individual will be terminated. I'm glad you at least enjoyed the Duval-Leroy!

Second Review-To the two cute blonds in the corner: Mea culpa, all my fault. I am the one who seated that group next to you. They are regulars & dine with us several times a week. I arrived as they were leaving, crest- fallen for not having gotten here in time to enjoy their holiday luncheon. I promised them I would find a place to put them if they didn't mind packing in like sardines. The rest is all true....... just wanted to make it clear the motivation was not greed, but love. Would love to buy you lunch. Please contact me at ktgchilds@yahoo (won't let me write "dot com") & I will send you a gift certificate.

Third - As long as I'm here I should mention our #1 critisism: We don't seat incomplete parties or allow others to join when we are on a wait. The reasons for this is three fold: 1) we are small and it is impossible to estimate the wait when people are wating 40 minutes for friends to arrive before even ordering food, 2) It is simply unfair to allow someone to walk in off the street, sit down and eat when others have been waiting over an hour for a table, and 3): We have a small staff. Simply put, service suffers.
It's not about anything other than that. Happy New Year.

Listen. I normally would never write a review, but I have to respond to the previous author. This is a very good, laid-back establishment. The staff is great (I am biased- I go here quite a bit). Sometimes the bar is busy, sometimes slow, but never, ever could I imagine anything being said in a prejudicial way.
Please folks, before writing a review make sure you're not getting info third hand, particularly when making harsh accusations.

Heard a lot about this place, and was out with friends and we decided to go to Silvertone for drinks about midnight or so. There were 7 of us, and off we went. We were greeted by a "what the hell do you want?" sort of look from the 2 bartenders; from what I could tell there were no other employees in the place. A small and sort of sad looking crowd was at the bar, but whatever. We ordered some wine and then sat down at a table, and were basically ignored for the rest of the evening, which was okay, cuz we were having our own fun.

I didn't eat there, so maybe that would change my opinion, but I don't get the fuss about this place. Ambience? Are people kidding? There is very little charm in there, and what there is quickly becomes drowned out by the screaming single girls that seem to congregate at the bar, while one of the bartenders yells "wooooo" and flashes a flashlight at her breasts. This is a class operation, here, friends.

The best part was when a woman in our group went over to the bar with her boyfriend to get a drink and the bartender asks her "what the hell are you doing here with all those f-gs?" Charming. (this site won't allow the word to be written)

This place is lame with a capital L. Beyond the fact that its 2007, and we live in Boston, and I'm simply stunned that a bartender would be so idiotic, particularly since he is a person of color, there just doesn't seem to be any other redeeming value to this place. I cannot believe that a meatloaf or mac and cheese would be worth coming here.

ADDENDUM. After reading the responses to my review, I felt compelled to respond. I stand by the "3rd" party comments since they came from a person who would have zero reason to make it up. The truth is stranger than fiction. Just because you are shocked/dislike what I said doesn't mean it wasn't true. I did not feel welcomed when I arrived, and I was very glad to leave. Enjoy yourself there if you like. I won't go back.

Pros: the wine was cheap

Cons: atmosphere, bar crowd is sad, service

A friend and I went here for the famous mac n' cheese during lunch. When we got there (11:45) the place was empty, but as usual, it filled in very quickly. We were placed at a small two person table in a corner of the back room. Halfway through our meal, the waiter seated a large party of 8 directly next to us at a table suited for four. Once they sat down, their backs were pressed up against our table, their hair was practically in our food, and I was trapped in my seat. The waiter offered no apologies, and as the party was very loud and practically on top of us, we were forced to cut our lunch short. The food here is great and it's the best value around but this is not the first time I have experienced terrible service from them. Definitely give it a try, but know what you are getting into and don't expect good service!

Pros: Macaroni and Cheese

This place has delicious mac and cheese and meatloaf and is a cheap and tasty find right next to Park Street in the hub of touristy Boston. It can get quite crowded before concerts at the Orpheum, and during these nights service might rush dinners, but besides that, it's a great place for comfort food.

I love Silvertone, it never disappoints. Start with their homemade raspberry vodka, its delicious, but be forewarned its very sweet. Try the raspberry martini. The mussels are always a great choice, as is the mac and cheese. I almost always order the summer salad with chicken, its always great. The one con is they sort of rush you through dinner.

I'm assuming the people below who are upset about the "we won't seat you until your whole party is present" rule don't eat out much--unless it's a big chain restaurant, this is a pretty standard policy. Given the size of SliverTone, I'm not surprised or bothered by their "no one can add on to your party once you're served" rule, either. Sure, it can be annoying if people are meeting up, but it's also a strain on the server and the wait if people keep filing in all night. If you want to do that, go somewhere where you can sit at the bar.

This restaurant is small and tucked away, but the atmosphere, food, service, and menu knowledge of the wait staff were excellent. Our waitress described in good detail what each wine we asked about tasted like, and gave great recommendations for food. We went for lunch, so I'm sure it was less crowded than it would be for dinner or after work, but it was still busy. Yet the service was prompt and hospitable, the wine was full-bodied and tasty, and the appetizers we shared (goat cheese crostini, buffalo wings, and fried calamari) were excellent. Highly recommended, and I'll definitely go again.

Cons: small, so could get noisy

I've had good experiences here and will be going again with friends this afternoon. I don't really understand the negative posts below... I think the hostess' request seemed normal - especially when you admitted that you didn't think your 3rd would show. This place does get very busy so I'd agree you don't go here for the service alone.
The place is a little funky and retro which is a unexpected based on the corporate surroundings. The food is very good for the price and I, like others, also enjoyed the martinis.

Great place for lunch or after-work drinks with friends. The decor is very warm & inviting with its red leather booths and wood seating at the bar area. The cocktails are excellent (the raspberry martini is phenomenal) and I've never seen a better priced wine list in all of Boston... something like $10-15 over retail. As for the food, they have a great selection of salads, sandwiches, appetizers and mains. The food isn't fancy, but you'll get generous portions of delicious homey concoctions like Shepherd's pie, steak tips, calamari, etc. at extremely reasonable prices -- which is why I think it makes for a better than average place for lunch or a great place to grab dinner with lots of people. Yes, it can get extremely crowded (and noisy!) so you may have a bit of a wait, but it's totally worth it... especially for that macaroni & cheese!

After an exhausted work day, like most Boston professionals, my friend and I were searching for a casual dinner. When we arrived at Silvertone and requested a table for 3, the hostess refused to seat us till the 3rd party arrives. Since we were so hungry and tired and not sure whether the 3rd party will arrive, we told the hostess that only 2 of us will be having dinner. She then told us that if our remaining party shows up later, he will not be allowed to join us. She sat us at a small table, where we ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees immediately. Later, our 3rd party showed up. The hostess came over and scolded at us with the most disrespect I've ever experienced in a restaurant. We didn't want to lower ourselves to her level, make a foolish scene and ruin our evening. Neverthless: DON'T GO THERE.

I'm not one to post comments but something needs to be done about this place. This is the second time I've been to Silvertone-- and the second awful experience I have had. This most recent time, we were told we had to wait for our whole party was present before being seated. Ten minutes later our server/host sat three of us with the stipulation that Silvertone normally does not do this but since it was not crowded would let us in. Four of us ordered drinks, appetizers, and had also placed our entree order when a friend popped in. When we asked for a chair, we were yelled at by the server/host and told that if the place suddenly got busy we would have to leave. Well, we left right then-- the host/server slammed our check on the table and then the manager cooly dismissed us. DO NOT GO HERE.

Silvertone's continues to impress, I love this place! From amazing cold lomein noodles, delicious chicken wings, the best mac and cheese in all of Boston, and a grilled cheese that rivals the one served at Delux Cafe (another one of my faves in the South End), you can't go wrong if you can get a table. Arrive early or be willing to wait in an over-crowded hip bar area on busy nights, if you're looking to eat anyways. If you can get a good spot at or near the bar, you won't even remember to order any food, as the bar scene and cocktails make the visit worth it in itself. Silvertone's is platinum in my book, Boston needs more places like this!

We arrived just ahead of the dinner crowd on a Saturday and were seated promptly in a booth. We ordered drinks and the soda in mine was flat, so when I was able to flag down our waiter, I requested another - and waited. And waited. It never came. Our meals arrived and I had to again flag down our waiter, who explained they were trying to fix it and tried to tke off without offering me another drink after 15 minutes had passed. I got a beer, and we enjoyed an excellent meal. The prices are terrific here and the portions don't even skimp. But when we finished our meal and requested another drink it became clear that we were not welcome to stay. No fewer than three people came by to "clear" our table and We left half finished beers on the table rather than continue being harassed.

Good food and laidback atmoshphere with hip, but not too hip crowd. The food is basic comfort food, sandwiches, straightforward preparations of meats and seafoods and very good salads. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely recommended.

We love this place. It is consistantly great. Chatted with the owner about how he creates such sublime calamari - we won't tell the secret, you will have to ask him yourself! The one place worth eating at in DTC (Dowtown Crossing). PS: Get there early if you want the roast chicken - it is always sold out by the end of the night!

We tried to get drinks at #9 Park to no avail. Not wanting to be late for a concert at the Orpheum, we meandered down Park Street. Not wanting to be to early, we decided to poke around and see how much the area has changed since we graduated from Suffolk 10 years ago. The neon of the Silvertone beckoned us in from the cold. We ordered drinks and apps at the bar and could not have been more delighted with the food, atmosphere etc. We always try to stop in when we are in that part of the city.

Went there for lunch on one of those HOT summer days of 2002. It was a great relief to get inside. The staff was courteous and offered us a drink while we waited for a table. That helped us settle in quite nicely. The food was great. I had the mussels. Mussels can be tricky. If not cooked right they are tough and chewy. I don't particulary like my mussels tough! they were delicious. Everyone in my party seemed to enjoy there lunch. I would definitely go back.

Great service, great food, great atmosphere, until I read the back of the menu. Man! An entire list of what you're not allowed to do. Instead of making a list of strict rules on seat time limits and adding friends to your table, let the wait staff break it to you gently. This is plain silly! People go out to relax and get away from the rules and regulations of everyday life. Wake up and let the people be, serve them, don't dictate them. Beware, if you have friends joining you in 10 minutes, don't sit down! Prepare to stand. Waiting at your table for your friend that is parking the car is strictly against the rules at the Silvertone. Yes, I know, it is just plain silly. I will go back again, but I will be eating at the bar where there are less rules to remember.
