The Metropolitan Club and Bar is a "modern" steakhouse. From the moment you walk through the doors you will find a warm clubby environment at The Metropolitan Club and Bar. You'll be greeted by a delightful combination of old and new.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Located in the former home of Figs restaurant, the Metropolitan Club offers moneyed Newtonites a stylish culinary playground. With food and liquor pairings, designer cocktails and stylish lighting and furniture, the bar area is as modern as any in the city. Serious diners decamp to the dimly lit dining room awash in warm browns and golds. Efficient servers and bartenders are familiar with the menu's many intricacies.

The Food
The Met's menu meshes standard steakhouse items with high-concept touches. This approach yields dry-aged cuts of sirloin, plated with colorful spears of carrots or turnips and squiggles of beet alioli. Unique starters include Caprese salad with fried green tomatoes, and pan-seared watermelon "steak" with fresh feta. Savory monkfish osso buco and homemade penne carbonara with pancetta and peas are examples of non-bovine entrees available. Popular made-to-order desserts include warm pineapple upside-down cake and molten caramel-filled chocolate cake.

Key Points

  • Wine List
  • Online Reservations
  • Private Dining

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Weekends bring one of the area's most upscale brunches (caviar omelettes, homemade tomato soup with a "floating" grilled cheese).
  2. Parking - Diners can take advantage of the restaurant's free valet service.

Delicious Food - New Favorite Restaurant

by no1foodlover

I have been looking for a really nice restaurant outside boston and I've tried a few with not a lot of success. THen a friend of mine suggested The Met Club in Chestnut Hill. So, last Saturday night my girlfriend and I decided to go. We had one of the best dinners that we could remember in a long time and I thought it was worthy of a review. We started at the bar for some cocktails, the bartender was really friendly and made us feel really comfortable, my girlfriend ordered one of their specialty cocktails, they have a nice selection with some interesting ingredients - it was hard for her to decide but the bartender was knowledgable and recommended one. I ordered my normal before dinner scotch, they have a large selection and carry my favorite scotch. We then went to the dining room for dinner, we ordered oysters and the tuna and salmon tartare. We chose from a selection of oysters and they were so fresh and tasty we order more and the tartare was served with these crispy chips - really fresh. I ordered some wine and the server helped and knew a lot about wines. Our dinner arrived and my girlfriend and I were completely blown away as to the deliciousness of our dinner. I ordered a steak off of their special steak menu. It melted in my mouth and was full of flavor. My girlfriend likes to try different things and she went for the salmon wellington. She said she wanted to come back next week to have it again - it was so good. Next came the dessert, we were informed they have a pastry chef and bake everything in the restaurant so even though we were full we decided to split something. Out of the kitchen came this giant piece of cheesecake with caramel and chocolate and pecans and whipped cream. Everything was perfect, the food was great, the people were really friendly and the valet parking was free. We will be back and we recommend this to anyone who wants to have a great night out.

Pros: Great Food, Friendly and knowledgable staff

Cons: Hard to get a reservation at 7pm on Saturday night

Nice variation on the usual steak houses

by tpinckney

I've been to pretty much all the steak houses in Boston and this was one of the most interesting. It's a little more varied that the typical places, good service, good food, expensive tab.

Pros: slightly more modern take on the usual steak house menu

Cons: Not the hip downtown kind of scene

Terrible all the way around

by lisakp

My husband and I had dinner here a few nights ago. The food was terrible. From the appetizers, to the entree's, to the desert. The only tasty thing we had was the wine. We were in a large group and started out with an assortment of appetizers...each one a disappointment. The calamari was dripping in grease, the duck confit spring rolls had little flavor, the tartare(salmon & tuna) had too much mayo and the Crispy Steak Bomb Snacks steak rolls with wasabi mayo was bland. Each of us ordered some type of steak, I had the Prime Skirt Steak with pepper jam which again tasted like it was fried and dripping in oil and my husband the Bone-In New York Sirloin 18 ounce which he said was mediocre. The sides we ordered were horrible. The broccoli looked like it has been placed in the microwave with a slice of craft cheddar cheese.
Desert was just as disappointing. Did I mention the waitress came to take our desert order about 10 minutes after we got our entrees? How rude and unprofessional is that? I understand it may take 15 minutes to prepare a certain desert but I don't need to think about desert until after the main course.
The bar was nice and the decor trendy but we will never go there again.

Pros: Free valet parking

Cons: The food

bad food

by samuel001

We dined at the met club New Year?s Eve and I have to say the food was just horrendous

I had the brisket which was bone dry but I also sampled my wife?s Filet which was average at best. I also tried the Rib Eye for two which I found to be flavorful but way to chewy..

Good atmoshpehere and good drinks..my suggestion get drinks at the bar and skip the food

Excellent New Years Eve evening

by luvfood9

We had an incredible night with a party of 6 celebrating New years eve at the MET.
The lychee champagne cocktails were sooooo good.
A few of us ordered the special Chinese menu which was superb.
The duck was one of the best duck dishes ever.

The atmosphere, the staff, the drinks, the food.
Simply perfect.

Pros: Food, atmosphere, bar

very nice, very expensive, saturday night quick service but then felt a little rushed to turn table and the prices, they are not afraid to charge you, free valet is required as RT 9 is a busy street

Very solid

by theduke37

Pommes frites with a truffled mayonnaise sauce was the highlight. Everything else was solid to good with prices a little bit high. Atmosphere was nice and service was excellent. Can't complain, although there wasn't anything to make you rush back either. A little bit more hip than say a Capital Grille, but not that much more.

Pros: Fries

Extremely Disappointed

by photogyrl

I have been looking forward to trying this restaurant since it opened due to its modern look and the rave reviews over its menu. Unfortunately, our experience was so bad that we left before even eating. The hostess greated us by offering to seat us in the dining room, then stopping half-way there to inform us that the dining room was closing early. She suggested eating in the lounge, and assured us that the full menu was available. After sitting in the lounge for about ten minutes, having not been approached with menus by anyone, the hostess reappeared to inform us that the full menu was not available, but that we were welcome to try something from the bar menu. At this point we decided to just leave. The cold service, lack of organization, not to mention the refusal of a full menu at 8:45pm, left us extremely disappointed.

Finally Fabulous Food in the 'burbs.

by ahoff

I feel lucky to finally have a restaurant in my neighborhood which has the quality and a menu which offers many choices. The tartare's are excellent. The simple fettuccine and tomato sauce is memorable. The spinach cobb has grilled corn, perfectly ripe avocado, and a to-die-for bacon dressing. The warm lobster salad and the whole deep fried snapper are both original and excellent.
I would drive miles(even if it wasn't in my neighborhood) to come back for the made to order Apricot tart!
Brunch was awesome, the dutch apple pancake and the crabcake benedict and the danish basket of homemade goodies is some of the best pastry around.

Few places do everything well. I must commend this restaurant for its ambitious menu and make note that there burgers and fries are as good as their steaks and desserts! This is a rare find in town let alone in the 'burbs.

Pros: complimentary valet, Great Food, Stylish atmosphere

Not a good experience

by mattf81

I tried the Met on a Wednesday with one other person. The hostess was polite but said the only available table was a booth by the kitchen. Several "better" tables remained empty the entire course of our dinner -- a disappointment. To start, we ordered the tuna and salmon tartar, which was horrible; the tuna was not fresh and both items were overly saturated with mayonnaise. We did not eat it, and when we complained, the server was unapologetic, a manager never visited the table, and the appetizer remained on the check. My companion ordered the Rigotoni Bolognese (fair), and I had the Beef Tenderloin (good). The German Chocolate Cake was poor -- dry, over-iced, and cold! Service was also fair. Our server was omnipresent at the start, but disappeared after our complaints. Overall, this meal was a far cry from the quallity we deserved for the money we paid.

Pros: Ambiance, Valet Service, Food Presentation

Cons: Food Quality, Price, Detail of Service

Was disappointed, now appeased

by angiewong77

Last week, I had posted a review of my dining experience at this restaurant - and now I want to revise it. While my party and I thoroughly enjoyed the dining aspects of our meal, we were let down by the service we received, specifically from the hostesses. This was disappointing and unfortunately started our experience on the wrong note. However, after I posted my review, I was contacted by a manager of the restaurant who offered a very professional and courteous apology stating he appreciated my feedback. This restaurant has the potential to be top-notch, but it has some kinks to work out and I am glad to see it is taking the steps toward improvement. Oh, and you MUST try the watermelon steak it is amazing!

Pros: Food quality, Watermelon steak, Bar

Cons: Service, Hostesses

gem in the 'burbs -- great for business meetings

by hg58

went to the met club on a recent thursday night for a business meeting.
we were pleasantly surprised as soon as we were greeted by complimentary valet. as we walked in the door there was a great buzz at the bar -- were all(a group of ten men)had cocktails and found the selection of liquor impeccable.
every detail in this place has been carefully thought out -- from the decor to the service to the plateware to the absolutely terrific meal. we all enjoyed the ability to get a great dry aged steak(one of the best we have had in the city) but also to enjoy the bone-in veal parmagiana with perfectly made ziti and bolognese sauce!!! we were able to conduct a business meeting and actually hear everyone at our table inspite of the crowd at the restaurant. we will go back to this place time and time again.

Pros: complimentary valet, excellent wine list, delicious food

Very Disappointed

by ginny5

Went out with friends for a birthday (16) people, pre-reserved. Between the three waiters they could not figure out who had what. Two entrees were brought 20 minutes after everyone else had theirs. One entre was never brought. The staff was not even appologetic. Food tasted OK but for their prices what was offered was not worth it at all. The drinks were also so so, I have had much better. It is a well designed place and seems to attract many people, but for me all of it has to work not just the atmosphire. All in all I was very disapointed.

Puts the YUM in yummy!

by citykidd

The Metropolitan Club is by far one of the best restaurants in the Boston scene right now. Its's sophistacated food and decor really up the anti for other chefs in the area. Executive Chef Jeffrey Fournier has designed a menu that is sure to please anyone - from dry-aged steak that melts in your mouth, to his signature grilled romaine salad and the burger on the bar menu, nothing leaves you wanting. I highly recommend this place to anyone... and for those of you who are looking for a funky bar to just have drinks, the leather chairs, subtle lighting and warm fireplace will make you never want to leave - top it off with their "Tolstoy" martini... mmmmm. Can't say enough about this place. FINALLY a hip sophisticated restaurant/bar that is not at all pretentious in Boston.

Pros: complimentary valet, private dining rooms, great wine list

Not your typical steak house. Chic, comfortable, elegant and quiet atmosphere welcomes all ages. Presentation and service are great especially for a new restaurant.Food was delicious, wine list, interesting mix and excellent selections. Knowledgeable Somalier.Great for 2 people or larger parties. Felt like Manhattan without the gimmicks and babes.Great addition to the area.

Pros: valet parking, great acoustics, hip and elegant

Keep trying

by zoe303

We went on a Saturday night, with trepidation as we had heard of the service issues. We could not ahve been more pleased. Our server was quick to arrive, and helpful. Food was brought out by multiple waitstaff, so everyine had plates at the same time.
The Grilled Romain Salad is to die for! We stuck with meat (it is a steak house) and were impressed with the quality. (My husband LOVED the prime rib, which has always been oddly missing from the Capital Grill's menu up the street)
Thank God there is a new restaurant in this area!

Pros: location, valet, bar is seperate

Still working out the kinks

by smcg04

The food was great but the service was horrible! Took about 15 minutes for anyone to come to our table once we sat, then another 20 mins for our drinks to arrive (they arrived after the salads), and when our entrees finally arrived one of them was wrong! We kept the dish they brought us because at that point we just wanted to get out of there... I wouldn't have minded so much butt he waiter barely apologized and they didn't take it off the bill. I'll give them another month or so to work out the kinks and then possibly give it another try.

Pros: great food
