Excellent Italian peasant food. The arancini are the best in the city. Pizza is Sicilian style so if that's not to your liking you're out of luck. They even serve beer and wine. My only complaint is the line which can be a bit of a bear to get through. Still they move very quickly and I always try to go there when I can. It would be nice if they opened up a second one that wasn't so hard to get to.
Julie, try open at 10:45 and close by 1:30 most days!
Open until 3:00 is a slow day by their standards!
This food is great. The menu has only about a half dozen items, but even the recent price increases only put the food on par with mid-1990's prices. It's one of the only places in the city to get real pizza, nevermind three slices for $5!
Oh, and wine in Dixie cups? Classy. This place is legit. Mind the long line though!
I can't believe that I am the first to review Galeria Umberto. What the hell is wrong with the world? Maybe its awesomeness is a given?
Umberto's alone remains old school. They only make as much food as they can, there is a line out the door at 11:00 and its all gone by 2:00. The service is polite, professional, but curt. There is no tip jar, no chit chat, just food. The menu only has - like ten items. Pizza, rice balls, potato balls and a variety of calzones, each one a MASTERPIECE. The pizza is what pizza should be, oily with a good crust, no toppings. Nothing fancy, served fresh from the oven. Whenever I run into a wayward quebecois or tourist I send them there. Forget the act the rest of them put on, I can't tell you how many restaurant guys told me they were mob informants on the lam...
As for the decor, same thing - no decor. A big mural but besides that just regular tables and chairs. The RMV has more decor. The place is spotless clean, considering how much business they do and how long they have been there, but its not fancy at all.
The food does all the talking and its really, really, REALLY good.
This place has the best arancini and the prices are unbeatable. The rest of the food is great, too. There are tons of people in line, so it's best to get there by 11:30AM, but it's worth the wait either way :-) FYI--They close after lunch when the food is sold out.
