5 Stars: Lucca (by LeighAnn H.)

In my opinion this is one of the best in the North End!! The food was excellent with great flavor and cooked to perfection, the wine was delicious, and the staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. I'll definitely be going back.

3 Stars: Worth a ONE time visit. (by stonewanderer)

Beautiful setting, perfect for a date. Cozy and romantic without being over the top. Service was incredible. From the valet, coat check, waitress and bus boys - we were well taken care of throughout the evening. The food? It was good. Not great, but good. Bottom line on that is I'd expect it to be better at those prices. Swordfish was well prepared, not overcooked. Accompanying risotto was 'alright'. Overall it is a good spot to check out and take a date for a special occassion or to impress. But for this reviewer there are too many attractive alternatives to try that I probably won't visit again.

5 Stars: fantastic wine list (by rcastoro11)

I was invited to a dinner at Lucca. I didn't want to go because the North End is kind of cheesy. I was really surprised by Lucca. First the wine list is one of the best I have seen in the city. They have a wine spectator award of excellence. I collect wines and they have a really, really impressive collection. The service was very attentive and the food was exceptional. I will definitely be back, I wasn't expecting such a good restaurant in the North End.

1 Stars: WOULD NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN! (by kkro)

I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend and I must say I will never go back. I knew the restaurant was expensive when I went so this was not the problem. I visited the restaurant with a friend and our three kids. We ordered our meals and the kids were offered spaghetti and meatballs which they ordered.( They later charged us $24 each for kids spaghetti!) I also asked if my friend and I could split the antipasto appetizer.($14) She said that was fine and she would bring plates and serve it to the whole table. I informed her the kids would not be interested in the antipasto and she said well she would serve it to everyone. Thought this was a little strange but went with it. When the platters arrived it was way more than we could finish. The kids ate a breadstick and that was it. The meals were average at best. When the bill arrived I noticed the charge for the antipasto was $70. When I questioned the waitress she said, "Well I told you I was going to serve it to the whole table" to which I replied "I told you the kids weren't going to eat it" After going back and forth with her and the manager and being treated as if I were some Neanderthal who had never dined in a nice restaurant before, the manager agreed to take off the kids charges. Mind you no where on the menu does it say the charge for antipasto is $14 per person or you are not allowed to split an appetizer with someone. Needless to say I find this place to be OVER RATED! ALso, FYI the valet parking is located down the street at Fiores which no one told me when I called. Next time maybe I'll just dine at Fiores! BEWARE!

5 Stars: gret place (by trentfarmer)

I have heard about Lucca before as being a great place , so I decided to go there with some friends last Saturday. I was really impressed with how friendly everybody was from the front door to the buss people. The place was packed it is much larger than I thought with lots of different rooms. The halibut was really good and the carrot cake was also really good. My friend all enjoyed their meals and we are going again next week. A good discovery

2 Stars: Bad Food, Good Atmosphere (by JohnnyRedd)

Were hoping for a special dinner, and expected one given the prices. Food was simply not good. Bland, cold, poorly presented, etc. Atmosphere was excellent, though, so if you're looking for a place for drinks only, this is a great spot. For the hungry, avoid at all costs (because this one costs a lot!)

4 Stars: One of the best (by Deborah K.)

I loved this restaurant. Can't wait to go back. For delicious Italian food, this is the place to go. The service was spectacular and the wine was too. A very romatic spot for a special romantic evening. I would highly recommend them.

4 Stars: Food is good but small selection (by sparrowwithabell)

I think the food at Lucca was very good, esp. the rigatoni with wild boar. The selection in the menu was a bit small, esp. the apetizers. The price is a little bit expensive, the cost of seared beef tenderoin was $36, I think I have had similar food with comparable quality elsewhere but at a cheaper price. The pasta dishes are all expensive, $25++. The waiter was new and a bit confused which was a minus point. And, there is no valet parking.
Overall, I think the food is good, but I'm that "wowed" to pay for the food.

5 Stars: Most Outstanding Italian dining in Boston! (by vianneyd429)

Came here with my dear friend who was showing me around town. Excellent choice!! We were seated promptly upon arrival although the place was packed. The service was phenomenal!! The food was totally exquisite with the highest quality of ingrediants and great presentation. Best of all, they have an exceptional wine list. While visiting the Boston area, I must say, I dined at the best Italian place. I will definitely come back when I'm in town. Lucca is definitely the best Italian Restaurant in the North end by far.

I've been to Lucca twice and I must say the food is AMAZING!!! Lucca's service was impecable along with the brisk service once we arrived. The waiter was very thorough and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was outstanding as well as the wine. We will continue going to Lucca over and over again.

5 Stars: I will definitely be back (by pwiggly)

My friend has been trying to get me to come to Lucca but I think the North End is full of mediocre restaurants slopping out food. Lucca was really good. We ate at the cocktail tables near the bar, the server was great and very amusing. She did a great job on guiding us towards her favorite dishes on the menu and also selected a great bottle of wine. The wine we were looking at was more money however she selected a cheaper bottle and told us to have that instead. I was really impressed that she didn't try and up sell us. Very cool energetic room I will definitely be back

1 Stars: TOURIST TRAP BEWARE! (by hrips)

This place has a great location and a cool look on Hanover Street but that's about all it has! The service stinks, to put it mildly...they clearly bank on their location and out of towners. I had an average meal with horrible service from beginning to end. I would never go back and would never recommend this place to anyone.

I love Lucca. It is pretty pricey but the food is great. It's a big place so you're not cramped and they have a big full bar.

We came in after a celtics game because everywhere else was closed. They gave us their late night menu. We ordered lots of different dishes and four of us shared. We had the meat pizza, tuna tartar, calamari and antipasto they were all excellent. We then ordered the brushetta with mushrooms and the pasta bolonese.
I will be back to try their dining room menu. If it is half as good as what we had I cant wait

5 Stars: A truly fine dining experience! (by jlimbo)

I travel all over the country on business, and have visited all kinds of fine restaurants. What made Lucca the best so far was:
1) Their combination of excellent service (without the annoying "hovering" of many restaurants - I want a server, not a new best friiend)
2) Really tremendous food - many unusual entrees and top notch, distinctive flavors across the board
and
3) A relaxed/formal atmosphere. It sounds like an oxymoron, but after coming in off the busy street, we felt as if the pace had slowed down so that we could enjoy the meal and the surroundings whether we were there for a full business dinner or a casual drink later in the evening.

I don't often recommend anything, but if you like fine Italian food (not soggy spaghetti with ketchup sauce), I don't know of a better place in the country at this point. There may be other outstanding places, but I haven't found them in 30 years of eating all over the country.

Yes, I do recommend Lucca!

I had the butternut Squash Zuppa..amazing, then the Linguine alla Vangole, and Pear Tiramisu. just oustanding, the waiter walked us through the extensive winelist (a huge selection of spectacular wines), and suggested a Brunello di Montalcino called Fanti, unbeleivable. I loved the whole experience. People of Lucca, you know what you're doing, keep it up!!

I have notice all the bad reviews about this place and let me tell you, it is really not fair to speak so negatively about the place. I have frequented Lucca for almost two years, never ever had a bad experience, wait staff are professionals not the college kids who just want the money, they do their job because they like it. I highly recomend lucca for dining and even proivate dining, because really satisfaction is garanteed!!!

5 Stars: Best Italian in Boston By Far!! (by Andrea W.)

I'm not sure which restaurant the previous reviewers went to, but it can't be Lucca on Hanover St. in the North End. It is one of the best dining experiences in Boston, and definitely the best Italian. The food is extraordinarily good, and the service is always great. I should know, it's my favorite place to take clients to when I'm trying to impress them. I notice all these negative reviews were posted within a short time of each other, so my best guess is it's some reviewer with some sort of personal grudge or something. But don't let the saboteurs win! Lucca has never let me down.

4 Stars: Good food, good experience (by darandall)

We ate at Lucca on Saturday night and had a great meal and a wonderful time. Friends picked the restaurant, and I was perturbed by the reviews on Citysearch. We were seated promptly and courteously, and the waiter and staff were efficient and friendly. Our drink order was taken right away, and drinks returned swiftly. The wine list is way overpriced, but our waiter was familiar with some of the more modestly priced wines, and recomended a red that was delicious, although slightly more than we wanted to spend. I had pumpkin soup which showed a true pumpkin flavor, and then the short ribs, which were meaty and melting, served over polenta and some vegetables. My wife chose not to share her Caesar salad, which is high tribute, nor her appetizer/entree. Another person had the wild boar pasta, which he pronounced excellent. No complaints from anyone!
Several nits - don't charge for bread. This is America. Don't automatically serve bottled still water. Don't try to hose the guest who orders Dewars on the rocks by asking if he wants the Signature - it was $40 a glass on the after dinner drink list. Nice - fill in the tip on the credit card receipt so we don't have to fumble through the bill to look for some anonymous entry

The potato lasagna is one of my favorites, but I've liked everything I've tried so far. The orechiette is a must try as well. The wait staff is great, the service is friendly ans helpful without being too pushy. Lucca is now at the top of my list of great Boston restaurants.

1 Stars: Poor Service, Bad Food, Expensive (by manzoj)

I decided to take my girlfriend here for a night out on the town, even though I was a little bit cautious because of the poor reviews on citysearch. Next time I will listen to the reviews better! The service from the host to the bartender to the waiter was HORRIBLE. They were rude and short, and acted like they were doing us a favor. Service was extremely slow, even though the restaurant wasn't that busy, and our entrees both came cold. When we mentioned it to the waiter he did nothing. To boot the bill was shocking. Won't be back.

1 Stars: Horrible service and food, not to mention attitude (by barman123)

Went here with a friend for a casual night out in the middle of the week. We made a reservation, and even thought the restaurant was empty we were made to wait for approximately 30 minutes. When I asked the hostess if they forgot about us, she told me to "chill out, we're only 30 minutes past your reservation time". The attitude and realization that they were late should have been a sign. We eventually sat down and the service continued to unimpress. We waited 20 minutes for the bottle of wine we ordered - again, there were only 4 other tables seated at the restaurant. When we finally got our food it was cold and the pasta was completely over cooked. I mentioned something to the manager on our way out - he could not have cared any less and told me that they already had my money and I could go somewhere else next time. I guess they do so well with the tourists that they don't need tho local business - STAY AWAY from this over rated north end restaurant unless you want poor service, terrible food and attitude from the management all the way to the staff. With all the restaurants in the north end, you can do better anywhere.

1 Stars: STAY AWAY! (by scoozeme)

STAY AWAY. I went with a group of 8 people and it was probably one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The waiter didn't get our drink orders until 1/2 hour after sitting down at the table. We finally ordered drinks and food and about an hour later the food slowly starting trickling out, one by one. By the time everyone was served the food was cold. When we finally paid our check, the waiter mis swiped our credit cards. When we approached the manager, he said that this waiter was stealing and he would be "gone" tonight. What? This place is a nightmare. Lots of other choices in the N.End.

5 Stars: Special Dinner (by smarcely)

My boyfriend and I went to Lucca for our 2 year anniversary and what an amazing dinner we had. We were overwhelemed with what to pick to eat (everything sounded so good). We asked to split their green salad (expecting a salad and an extra dish for sharing) and when it arrived our salads were divided for us, perfectly split, and presented beautifully; there was definitely enough for each of us. It is pricey, however, the food is absolutely delicious and the atmosphere is perfect. Lucca is the perfect place to go for Italian food, cocktails and a special night out on the town. The staff is very friendly and attentive too. We had a great and memorable time.

The food was ok but all 4 of us ordered various seafood dishes and while we liked the flavors they were all overcooked? If they could get down their basic cooking skills then I would go back, but only with a reservation because we were sat at the far back corner, under a ?spotlight? next to the bathroom? there shouldn?t even be a table there? but the management and our server were nice and accommodating.

3 Stars: Decent food didn't make up for terrible service (by zoechance)

Having lived in Italy, I'm picky when it comes to Italian restaurants, but since a friend from Milan had recommended Lucca, I was confident I'd enjoy the food. And the food was fine. Nothing special, in fact, I prefer Dave's Fresh Pasta takeout in Davis Square. My boyfriend and I ordered 3 appetizers (oysters, salad and mushroom lasagne) and 2 glasses of wine. I might have inferred that our relatively small bill inspired the server's brusque and inattentive behavior, if I didn't hear her act the same way with the neighboring tables. And we would have ordered capuccino and dessert, but it was so hard to get the server's attention that we gave up and went to Modern Pastry across the street. We had intended to enjoy a romantic dinner before a show (hilarious comedy at Improv Asylum), but we treated like customers at a truckstop diner. The only thing I can say in Lucca's favor is that they have a dinner deal with Improv Asylum if you order through the theater, and for those who get better luck with service (and are hungrier than we were - it's about $45pp) I'm sure it's a good value.

5 Stars: Great service and yummy Italian food! (by tmobrien13)

We love this place! My husband took me here for the first time two years ago the night he proposed to me, and we've been come back on special occasions ever since. It's expensive but worth it. Our latest visit was Thursday night, 11/30/06. The service was great. The atmosphere was nice; it's somewhat dark but warm-feeling. The food was EXCELLENT! We started with the appetizer lasagna ai funghi which was unusual but good. I had the fish of the day (swordfish) which was good as well. My husband had the bistecca con risotto (beef tenderloin) which was fantastic. I'm not a big meat person but I'll definitely order this next time if it's still on the menu. Our favorite dessert is the formaggio, a sample of different cheeses. It's so yummy! All in all, we highly recommend this restaurant!

1 Stars: Unacceptable customer service (by aspiringchef)

I had previously been somewhat of a regular at Lucca and told everyone I know to go there for the great food. However, I will never do this again. I went last weekend and they charged my card for someone else?s meal. Although it was voided, it did affect my available balance. The amount was not immaterial (hundreds of dollars) and I called to let them know what happened. When I received a phone call back I was subsequently cursed out by one of the owners, who took no responsibility on the part of Lucca. Needless to say the cursing was unacceptable and unprofessional; I was completely aghast especially seeing as I tangentially know the rest of the ownership and have heard great things about them. I have never been treated so rudely or unprofessionally and will be taking my business elsewhere, of course. For a professional restaurateur I would have expected much more tact and respect when speaking with customers. Lucca has a lot to compete with on Hanover St, or anywhere else in the North End for that matter, and I recommend you try those places first.

5 Stars: If I did not like variety, I would go here every time dining out. (by spaceball)

Excelent atmosphere. We were seated right away, on time for our reservation. Servers were friendly but not overbearing, they were there but not on your back every five minutes. Great wine selection. Food far exceded expectations. On a side note, our server spilled a small amount of wine from our purchased bottle, not even a fourth of a glass. Immediately he apologized and informed us he would pay for each of us to enjoy an additional complimentary glass. Due to the amount of wine spilled was not necessary but was well appreciated. Accidents do happen, and our server cleaned the spill thoroughly. Will definately dine here again in the near future. And it was not a bank buster. A definate gem on Hanover St.

5 Stars: One Of The Best In The North End (by cyncyn)

Lucca is a great place to experience some of Boston's best italian cuisine. The food is fabulous. There's a wide range of appetizers and dishes to choose. The wine list is great as well. The staff are very friendly and the crowd is a great mix. A nice place to enjoy a good meal and have fun with friends or that special someone. Lucca is a nice choice if you're thinking of having dinner in the North End.

5 Stars: True great Italian food (by urh)

If you believe that good Italian food requires lots of red sauce - this isn't the place for you. If you like Northern Italian cuisine and enjoy good wine, this is a must. The decor isn't in-your-face Italian, it is what you'd expect from a sophisticated restaurant. But it also isn't a we're-so-dark-so-your-date-doesn't-see-you-turn-red-when-you-get-the-bill place. No, it's not cheap, but you absolutely get what you pay for. And the service is friendly and knowledgeable, and the crowd is a great mix. And if you come in late, half the North End is in there because they have a late night menu.

5 Stars: Best Meal I've Had ina LONG Time! (by foodntwrklover)

This is one of the most fantastic Italian restaurants in Boston. The roasted duck tart with carmalized onions, goat cheese and fresh spinach was to DIE for. I also had a bottle of the best prosecco I've ever had. This is an incredible restaurant. The owners are always there helping out and greeting customers, which is a sign of a well-run restaurant. It's hard to do justice to exactly how wonderful the food is. Do yourself a favor and bring someone special here.

5 Stars: Excellent service, food and wine (by kelly1066)

Lucca is my favorite upscale restaurant in the North End. Their wine list is impressive, and has been mentioned several times in wine spectator. Our waiter seemed well versed in wines and made an excellent recommendation based on our entrees. We had the potato and mushroom lasagna as an appetizer, (lasanga ai funghi) and it was absolutely incredible. Be forewarned that the online menu is not up to date currently, so while it provides a great idea of the types of cuisine they offer, don't get your heart set on one particular menu item. The service is phenomenal, our wine glasses were always kept filled, our questions answered thoroughly an knowledgably. There's excellent more reasonably priced Italian in the North End, but Lucca is one of the places that's worth the slightly high menu prices.

5 Stars: Best on Hanover (by taj22033)

This place is great. Everything and everyone is very accomidating and you are treated with complete respect. Very dim lighting but noisy because you are dining all in one main room. In the summer the windows that line one complete wall open up and its like your eatting outside. The bar is attended by a older man who knows his liquiors. The food is one of the best in the North End. Out of all the restuarants in the North End this is on the top of my GO TO list. The food from italian entress to the beef tenderloin is incredible. The attire would be dressy casual.

5 Stars: Lucky at Lucca (by katiequack)

Went to Lucca with friends for a birthday dinner and had an absolutely wonderful meal. We were a group of 8 that arrived a few minutes late for our reservation, and they accomodated us with no fuss or nasty comments. The ambience is cool, kind of dark and trendy -- it would make a great date spot. Wine was great, and wonderful entree suggestions were made by our patient waiter Chad, who took the time to explain the menu to each of us. Timing of each course was right on. We were there for a long time, and we never felt rushed or bored. And save some room at the end -- the flourless chocolate cake is incredible.

5 Stars: Fantastic!!!!!!! (by halibut)

This restaurant deserves many accolades...it truly is the full package! Although reservations are a plus, this large restaurant and staff are all too accomodating to find you a seat somewhere for a great meal. The bar and dining area offers something for everyone..from lighter fare, vegetarian options, to business clientele and yes! even your pain in the ass in-laws. I would be just as happy to bring my family, a date, a group of pals, or even a business meeting. The wine list is skies the limit if you wish (bring a cheap skate, or your lavish dining guest, you can always find something) This staff will bend over backwards to make your meal truly an experience. Thanks Lucca for doing it right!

5 Stars: Loved Lucca! (by mbooty)

My boyfriend was visiting me in Boston and wanted to have a nice dinner in the North End. We wanted a place that had more of a flair to its menu items. Lucca was the first place we saw. The managers were very friendly. Our server was nice and attentive. Antipasti we had the Mussels which were ok and the Rustic Duck Torta which was AMAZING....they could have made a main dish out of this!!! Must order that. The wine list was extensive, so much to choose from. For the main course I had the Lamb and he had the Fish of the Day with Butternut Squash Risotto. Both were very good...the Lamb was a very RICH dish. We had the chocolate flourless cake and vanilla bean gelato which were YUMM. I highly recommend Lucca...we had no idea where we were eating that night but we chose the right place.

Before going to Lucca, I looked at the menu online to make sure that there was something that I liked on the menu....I showed up at dinner only to see that the menu on the web was outdated and they did not have what I wanted - but the "new" menu was also more expensive than what was on the web. The service wasn't great, but the worst part was when they lost our coats for 30 minutes and couldn't find them....Only to have us find them on the floor below their coat racks and have them act like it was our own fault...

3 Stars: Skip Lucca for a better choice (by jillinboston)

There are too many choices in the North End to spend too much money and receive snotty service. A group of six girls for a 9pm dinner, we did have a few special requests to accomodate a pregnant woman and vegetarians. The waitress was not thrilled to "customize" our dishes (ie. pasta sans wild boar) but at these prices, it should not have been an issue. Pasta with tomato sauce was adequate, antipasto was ok, flourless chocolate cake was delicious.

5 Stars: 3rd Anniversary Dinner (by tidakpenting)

My wife and I celebrated our wedding 3rd anniversary at Lucca. Before I made the reservation for our special dinner, I looked at the other reviews (Lucca's bad service) and skipped Lucca. However, only few high-end Italian restaurants are opened on Sunday, so I went back to Lucca. Actually, it turned out that we had very good dinner. The waiters were very friendly and well trained. The food, especially the pasta, was very delicious (not too oily and good combination Seafood + Green Vegetables). The beef was over well done, although I ordered medium. Over the past 4 years, we have visited over 40 high-end restaurants in Boston. Lucca is one of our top 5 restaurants.

i ended up at lucca by chance. my boyfriend and i had our valentine's day reservation at another restaurant cancelled on us when my flight from san diego was 6hrs delayed. dejected, we happened upon lucca and decided to give it a try. on valentine's day of all days, we were seated instantly! the waitress was wonderful--she took the time to explain the specials and was knowledgable about the wine. the atmosphere was dark and candlelit (pleasantly but not intensely romantic) with a lively bustle. i would suggest dressing nicely, but i was overdressed (wearing a cocktail dress for the other restaurant). the food was good (especially the platter of mussels we had as an appetizer). my entree was somewhat bland (a seafood linguine) but my boyfriend enjoyed his. the tiramisu dessert was quite good. it's not a cheap eat, but the prices are reasonable for an upscale italian establishment.

5 Stars: Amazing Saltimboca...... (by cpnbunkie)

My favorite place to have an amazing Saltimboca dish. The veal is tender and the chicken is awesome! The staff is extremely friendly and always welcomes me back. They are the best!

5 Stars: Candel light (by pinkpanther)

Romatic candel light setting in the North End. Very dark and mysterious. Excellent food, service, and wine. Fabulous desserts...

5 Stars: BEST FOOD ON HANOVER!! (by toulio)

Quite simply put Lucca has the best food on Hanover Street. Probably best to go when it's quiet as the service seems to go down hill as the crowd increases. The mussels are amazing and probably best shared ! The ambience is romantic but relaxed, better for couples and small groups. The place is reasonably priced as well when you consider the quality of the cuisine.

5 Stars: Outstanding Service! (by ejeskey)

I don't know what this last guy is talking about. I thought that the service at Lucca was some of the best I have ever had. In fact that is one of the things I mention when recommending the restaurant to other people. The food is also to die for. I had the beef .... mmmm mmm good. The desserts are also outstanding and the wine list had anything you could possibly want. So maybe there was one bad waiter but I'm sure they won't last there.

1 Stars: RUDE WAITER, WORTH TIPPING?? (by tbont2001)

My friend and I both went to Lucca's recently. The hostess was very nice and all was going great until the rude waiter showed up. When he informed us of the special, he barely finished speaking before he rudely started walking away without even asking us if we were ready to order, etc. Throughout the entire meal, he had this very snobbish, contemptuous attitude: like it was beneath his dignity to serve us!! The food wasn't that great either. My friend had eaten there many times before and she said the food is usually better.... I didn't feel like tipping the waiter at all--still did. In cases like these, is one really expected to tip for rude, contemptuous, snobby service from the waiter???? The rest of the waiters seemed nice, in general, but the one that served (or didn't serve!) us was abhorring!!
