Andrew R, you sound like a complete snob and a total idiot. From your 5 star review of your own business - "Dressmaking fabrics, quilting fabrics, craft fabrics, commercial-design fabrics, automotive fabrics ... are not products we sell. ... Using interior design fabrics in your quilt would have led to ruin because of the different weights, textures, fiber content, and cleaning instructions." There is absolutely no distinction that marks a fabric for interior design only. I routinely use upholstery fabric for dressmaking, and there is absolutely no type of fabric that would "ruin" a quilt. All you are doing is alienating a huge source of income for your business. You need to get your head out of your you-know-where and realize that it shouldn't matter to you one iota what the client intends to use the fabric for if they're willing to shell out the cash.

I am so glad I can issue a review on this horrible place. I just bought a new home and in process of having customized roman shades made for my new home. I visited the Handkerchief Factory and was treated so poorly and so rudely. Needless to say I have realyed my experience to all of my friends to stay away from this place. The bad experience was with the owner whereby he tried to grab the fabric out of my hands AFTER I paid for it. He went on to yell at me and his staff just stood there in disbelief. Thankfully I found a fabric store in my local area with great customer service and a great selection of fabric. The window treatments look GREAT . I will never go back to the handkerchief factory nor will I recommend it.

I'm a bit shocked at all the vitriol being tossed around; the Exeter Handkerchief Factory is the only place I shop for fabric and the only place I will bring clients (I'm a fabricator AND I'm coming all the way from Danvers, MA). So much of the anger here is with regard to the "library" and how the deposit rule shouldn't apply to everyone. Well, I'm sorry, but it does and it's an unfortunate truth that many designers (and some privileged clients) are unscrupulous people. Just try and find a more knowledgeable, patient staff or myriad selection anywhere in NH or MA -- you won't. When you find a business owner as wholeheartedly invested in quality product and customer service as Andrew is in this era of slack, you stay loyal.

The store has amazings fabric displays. Easy to see how my room was going to look with my choices. Very creative designs. If they got rid of some bolts, and they still have thousands, it's still is overwhelming. I got a great deal on Tuesday, because all of the fabric on the third floor is $6 a yard. The signs in the store say 10,000 bolts on the third floor. Their sewing labor prices were very competitive and the staff cut me 10 large swatches. I'll definately be back.

Thanks to reading the reviews here, I??ll bring my business elsewhere. I had been to Exeter Handkerchief years ago when I worked in Exeter and remember the vast selection and quality fabrics. So now that it??s time to redecorate my home??s main floor rooms, including window treatments and re-upholstering a sofa, loveseat, overstuffed chair and ottoman, I only thought of Exeter Handkerchief as my resource. Since this is such a big project and I??m in the early idea stages, I need customer service that is supportive and friendly. Looks like Exeter Handkerchief won??t measure up. I think the only reason they even have a three star rating is due to the owner??s comments padding the rating. Too bad. Like another reviewer, I had wanted to keep my business local.

Exeter Handkerchief Co. is great. The selection of fabric is second to none, and the staff is very helpful. They even have in house uphostery services that are phenomenal. I would recommend Exeter Handkercheif to anyone who is looking for quality fabrics at good prices, or looking to have their furniture reupholstered.

The Exeter Handkerchief Co. specializes in fabrics for interior design. We beautifully display and stock thousands of fabrics with that singular focus. Dressmaking fabrics, quilting fabrics, craft fabrics, commercial-design fabrics, automotive fabrics ... are not products we sell. We are experts in providing fabric and information for creating window furnishings, upholstered furniture, cushions, and bedding.
I wish I could help all of you, and I hope you find some great fabrics for your quilting project. Using interior design fabrics in your quilt would have led to ruin because of the different weights, textures, fiber content, and cleaning instructions. I don't have any idea where to purchase these and other fabrics, since most of the fabric stores have gone out of business. Check on-line or use other quilter's resources.

I'm new to the area and an avid quilter. I was planning on going to the Exeter Handkerchief Company to buy fabric, but not any more. Thank you to all the honest reviewers, and the owner, who clearly demonstrate that all are NOT welcome.
You very well may have the best selection of fabrics in the area, but your demeanor is so unappealing that I'm more than happy to spend my money elsewhere.

I am new to quilting, so of course I stop in to check out all the fabulous fabrics I have heard the store carries. What a big mistake - it was like the "snobbery factory." Not only did I feel like no one wanted to help with my questions (I was confronted with a sigh of annoyance when I tried), I was greeted with nothing but strange looks...it was like I wasn't supposed to be looking at the fabric. No one ever once asked if they could help me...

I was ready to buy what I needed for my project (it's true, the fabric is beautiful & plentiful) - unfortunately, I walked out empty handed...

One negative review can be isolated, but multiple? Plus the fact that every bad experience like this is shared with many many others - who in turn share more. Perhaps the owners should take heed...

Take the quess-work out of interior design. The Best fabrics from the Best designers are cooridinated in beatiful groupings. Over 200 inspiring displays to save you time and money. Thousands of new in-stock fabrics at $8 a yard on the third floor.

The recent the negative reviews are from customers and competitors who have violated our posted policies concerning our fabric-book library. I have asked them to leave the store.
We offer the most comprehensive sample and fabric-book library in the Northeast and access to them is completely open to everyone. Decorators and Homeowners may use library and sign books and samples out for free. This is a unique opportunity for anyone to access fabrics that are usually restricted to the design trade.
We have operated on trust for over 75 yrs and will continue to trust our customers with our costly resources. Designers and chain stores simply don't allow free and open access to these fabric resources.
Unfortunately, the economy has crippled most of our competitors and we have become the largest and most convenient target for "abuse". Our book-library policies are to prevent our competitors from using our books for their businesses. If our competitors choose not to invest in their own book-library, the trade-only Boston Design Center is their fabric resource, not the Exeter Handkerchief Company. Our no-fee fabric books are for our fabric buying customers.
Because we have continued to invest in our fabric-book library, full-scale displays, and in-stock fabrics, there is a great divide between what the Exeter Handkerchief Co. offers and our design competitors offer.
We offer 50,000 yds of in-stock fabric at $8 a yard, thousands of no-fee books and samples(fabrics are dicounted 20%-80%), hundreds of inspiring fabric displays. Samples of panels, valances, cushions, blinds, ...
Enjoy the store, become more informed about fabrics, and help us give you all the fabic resources you need by continuing our established open and honest relationship.

Without a doubt, the rudest owner/employees I have ever encountered in any retail store, anywhere! They are pushy, snippy, and unhelpful in the extreme. It may be with good reason their policy is not to allow customers to write down fabric information while shopping (judging by the signage, it appears this is a problem for them). Perhaps they should be asking themselves exactly WHY customers purchase elsewhere. I certainly won't be returning!

ADDENDUM:
I visited your store for the first time recently in pursuit of that perfect silk drapery fabric. In other words, I am what you would describe as a ??fabric-buying customer?. So why, if your fabric books are ??open to everyone? and ??available to use and sign out?, was I treated with such outright aggression and hostility when I made notes on a particular fabric sample, unaware of your ??rules?. And why was I pressed to purchase faux silk when I specifically requested real silk? Following a poor start, the situation continued to deteriorate after I was accused by you (Andrew) of ??writing information in my phone? when in reality, I was using my phone??s calculator to determine the approximate cost of the yardage I needed.

Whatever your retail woes, they are fundamentally no different from those of any modern retailer anywhere who must purchase goods to sell to the public. Yet never before, in any shop large or small, have I ever experienced (or even witnessed) such outright rude behavior and extreme aggression perpetrated on customers by the shop??s owner and/or employees. I have also never before visited any store where signs prohibit making notes, or where I??ve been asked to leave because I used a calculator to estimate the cost of an item. A word of caution is appropriate here: care should be taken before accusing any customer of wrongdoing without a shred of evidence and based solely on hearsay!

People have always comparison shopped, and with the advent of the Internet it is now even easier. That being said, most of us, myself included, are happy to support local businesses, sometimes paying more for items in exchange for great customer service and personal attention. However, after my recent abusive and highly unpleasant shopping experience in your store, you should know that I would travel far and wide to AVOID transacting any business with Exeter Handkerchief Company!

It appears that you suffer from the misguided belief that in order to protect your ??investments? you must constantly (and stealthily) monitor your customer??s behavior to be certain they are not ??stealing? any information. In my opinion, your excessive paranoia, overt rudeness, and pathetically poor sales skills have a greater negative impact on your business than comparison-shopping. To be quite blunt Andrew, the real problem with your business is you!

Furthermore, I find it amusing that you feel the need to dilute the honest, if occasionally negative, opinions of your customers with subjective 5 star ratings of your own. Since you have a vested interest in the business (and are hardly unbiased) your opinions are of no value to readers seeking an objective review.

In summary, if you have a sincere interest in advancing your business, you would be well served by taking courses in sales and marketing techniques and by seeking professional assistance to improve your interpersonal skills. Perhaps then, your customers will find shopping with you a pleasurable experience rather than something akin to a prison sentence.

10,000 yrds of New Fabric for Summer 2010. New Displays and More Remnats.
Brenda- I'm glad you liked the fabrics and we will work on showing more enthusiasm for every customer. I think your assesment of the retail fabric industry is also fairly accurate.
Regarding your decorating friend, I am going to have to strongly disagree. I believe your post did bring us closer to the heart of the matter. The store does not have a Loss Prevention Dept., but your statement "... what harm would this visit cause the store. How much revenue would you be at risk of losing?" correctly identifies the fact we would we be losing revenue. Stealing a little or a lot is still stealing.
This "well-established" local design competitor completely disregarded our posted Loss Prevention Policies for her own gain. If you feel my response of asking her to leave immediately is an over-reaction, then I would challange her to walk-in, unannounced, with her three ring binder and pen to any other competing design firm in the Boston area and start using their fabric resources for her own clients. For that matter, why didn't she try the local Ethan Allen or Cabot House.
It's even more maddening that she would have her husband post a nasty annonymous review because she was so embarrassed in front of her friend/client. If she is so emphatically correct with her actions, I challange her to confront me in this forum without the veil of the faceless Internet.
I am here 6 days a week for any customer who needs extra assisitance and I will always strongly enforce our Loss Prevention Policies like any other retailer.

I have to comment on the owners response to the review by Decorator's Husband. I found the response very disappointing and unprofessional as well as the action taken during the store visit. Seriously, what harm would this visit cause the store? How much revenue would you be at risk of losing? I think the owner over reacted.
I actually visited this store for the first time a few weeks ago and I certainly did not feel welcomed. The staff was not all that pleasant and displayed very little interest.
For what it's worth, I have found many fabric stores not all that warm and caring about their customers. Not sure if anyone else have experienced this. Anyway, Exeter Handkerchief, you may have great fabric and a large selection, but you may have turned off more 'potential' customers than you realize.

The first two floors of fabric are beautiful and well organized. All the fabrics are displayed in coordinated themes with free samples that are pre-cut and hang on the side of the display. A lot of the fabrics have matching trims, which makes it easy to see the whole room come together. Very different from any fabric store I've seen, and not overwhelming. The whole third floor is $8 and $5 a yard on Tuesdays. You can't beat that! Thousands of rolls from Robert Allen, Greef, Kravet, Schumacher, Waverly, P. Kaufman....
Sounds like the husband of the decorator was embarrassed that his wife got caught cutting a couple of corners in front of her friend.

Dear Decorator's Husband,
Your "well-established" decorator wife can buy all her fabrics at wholesale prices through her own accounts at the Boston design center. Your "well-established" decorator wife should have her own fabric resources or travel to Boston, and "not" use my business for her clients because she wanted to "save the trip to the design center." In short, your wife had no intention of ordering fabric from the Exeter Handkerchief Co., because she can always buy it for less with her own accounts.
The Exeter Handkerchief Co. is not the Exeter Public Fabric "Library" because I buy, house, and maintain one of the largest fabric resources in New England. My name is Andrew, the owner-operator of the Exeter Handkerchief Co., and I welcome all compliments and complaints, but I will not allow my business to be undermined by decorators "researching a project" (i.e. finding, recording, and using the information for their own fabric purchases).
I sincerely apologize if appeared "rude", because everyone should be treated with respect.
I never would have believed that a fellow local design professional wouldn't "think twice" about taking advantage of my store, and then would have her husband anonymously write a very negative comment in such a public forum.

I guess it takes all types, but my wife is a very well established designer in the area. She has been using this resource for years fairly regularly (and sent many customers to them directly). Today she went in with a friend (who was looking for herself) to research a project & save the trip to the design center. She was immediately & rudely confronted by the 'owner' Chad, who ordered them both to leave immediately because 'they don't let designers use them as a library anymore'. WOW I'd think twice about this 'resource'.

She was immediately & rudely confronted by the 'owner' Chad, who ordered them both to leave immediately because 'they don't let designers use them as a library anymore'. WOW I'd think twice about this 'resource'.

This place has all kinds of fabric for all occasions and then some. The prices are reasonable and the staff is always ready to help. Some of the help has been there for years and know the customers by name.

You will find every fabric at every price range in this store. It is a bit overwhelming if you are only the occasional seamstress like myself. The staff will help you if you ask, but they are usually busy with the more knowledgeable customers so if you prefer to be left alone that can happen too.

This is the place to go if you're looking for some great cloth for a favorite chair. I took my chair with me because I wanted to drape it over the seat to see how it looked. The staff was very helpful in cutting small pieces of fabric as samples. They sell everything from low price pieces to high end ones. It's located in beautiful exeter, so don't forget to enjoy the town.
