You can't go wrong with a burger at Joe's but if you want anything fancier, it will just be average. Friendly staff and fast service.

For a classic American-style dining experience, this is your place and the food is really good. This Waterfront eatery has a pub section with all of the usual selections, as well as a more formal section with white-line covered tables. A young, after-work crowd fills the bar on the lower level of the restaurant where people watching is a fun activity. The seats on the patio, as well as some inside, offer a nice view of the water.

I ate here recently with a large group, there was 14 of us, and was not impressed with the food. I ordered tuna sashimi and a side of sweet potato fries. The fries were yummy but the salad was only "eh". The portion side was extremely small and the price tag was large.

On a positive note, the wait staff was extremely attentive and accommodating. They even offered to split the check into smaller groups, which is always nice with a large group.

Cons: the food wasn't worth the price

I've been to the new Joe's (Newbury and Exeter) a few times now since I live in the area. If you're looking for a drink with a view, Joe's is definitely the place. They have a large area with huge windows that can be taken out to let in the spring/summer air. It's great for people watching if that's what you're into. If you're going for food, however, I suggest going somewhere else. The menu choices are really boring, the food itself is not great, and the portion sizes do not justify the price. You're better off going to Cheesecake Factory for similarly priced items, slightly better quality, more food-per-dollar and definitely more menu options. If it weren't for the bar area, this would be a 1 or 2 star rating.

My son and I have been going to Joe's since he was 7 (he's now 21!) and we continue to love it. Generally, the service is not only professional and polite, but warm. In any restaurant, one may find the occasional dud server (reading other reviews), but this has nearly never happened at Joe's and, when it does, I've noted that the server is gone quickly. The menu is varied and really does have something for everyone looking for very well-cooked basic american food. The ribs are the best we've had anywhere (and we've looked!), the specials are often interesting and well-done, the burgers are also amongst the best (always checked on to insure proper done-ness). Any issues with the food are dealt with quickly and with genuine apologies from one of the managers (issues are rare) and one really feels "cared for" in this respect. Also important to us is that the environment is very diner-friendly. There are several rooms all with sound-absorbing features that mean relative quiet no matter where you're sitting. It's really nice to have tablecloths and heavy cutlery in a moderate-priced restaurant and the seating is very comfortable. It's our fall-back, go to restaurant, and nearly never disappoints.

Both of the Joe's American Bar & Grills in Boston (this one on Newbury, and the other on the waterfront) are great restaurants I highly recommend... and not just because of the delicious warm bread loaf they give you at the beginning of the meal (although that doesn't hurt! :) This one is a new addition to the city, and as it is located on Newbury Street, a popular shopping and dining street in Boston, it is a hot spot for both lunch and dinner.

While sometimes chain restaurants seem very "chain-ey" this one has fresh food that is anything but ordinary. There is a great variety of vegetarian dishes and dishes for meat-eaters, too. They have everything from gourmet salads to steak to turkey burgers.

My favorite part of the whole restaurant is the retractable roof -- so fantastic in the warmer weather, which is so welcome in Boston! It screams "relax here with a cocktail while you people-watch." Don't mind if I do...

I like Amy. She's the blonde @ the upstairs bar that works during the week around lunchtime. I also like Kevin. He's the guy that comes on after Amy. I know that because they know I need a refill before I ask and they talk to me by name I will continue to go there, regardless of it being a chain.

See, I'm not a fan of chain restaurants; this one just has the service. And the new location. And pretty nice sitting out there in the sun with the retractable roof and windows this past week. It's even got more of a crowd than Stephanie's, which is surprising to me, but everyone's got their time to reign!

TIP: For a snack, I had the sweet potato fries. Perfectly salty and crisp! For drinkies, try the KJ Chardonnay (I ALWAYS fall back on this one) or something from their beer selection. Sam's on tap :) or enjoy a mojito or espresso martini @ happy hour. Hang around the upstairs bar.

I've been eating at Joe's for years, because it really varies its lunch/dinner menu well enough to keep me coming back while keeping my favorites on. Example: french onion soup and burger au poivre. The soup is deep and rich and the cheese is crusted as it should be. The fully pepper crusted patty is one of my favorites in the city and the meat is juicy through and through. I get this almost every time. Whenever there is an issue, and Ive had instances where something went, wrong, management was quick to act, and the meal was comp'ed. Good food, good service, cant go wrong with that.

I ordered the Baked Chicken. I have eaten inside Joe's American Bar & Grill restaurants before, but this time I ordered through an online dining-in service. This may be the reason that my food was so ill-prepared. Below is the description of my meal provided by their restaurant.

"Fresh boneless half chicken with our special corn bread stuffing, creamy chicken gravy, cranberry sauce, and real mashed potatoes"

Fresh boneless half chicken - 50% of the half chicken was simply missing, above it lay a nice crispy later of skin, fat, and a flat piece of cartilege where there surely was once a hunk of meat attached. The only reason I point this out is because I have ordered this meal several times (from other locations) and never once seen such an incomplete half chicken. The portion of meat that was present was very rough and not appetizing at all. Nothing enjoyable, did not eat it. This chicken is also NOT fresh.

Corn bread stuffing - This part was fine but it does not comprise much of the meal

Real mashed potatoes - Yes, they are very real. In fact, they are so real that the chef apparently takes a potato, any potato, no matter what blemishes it has on it, grinds it up and calls it real mashed potatoes - skins, fungus, and all. There were several large pieces of black R0T (I used a zero in place of the o because that word is not allowed to be posted on this site) in the potatoes. One piece was as large as a quarter and about half a centimeter thick. I was eating these potatoes under dim light for a while but after noticing the color black, I decided to take a closer look and see exactly what I had been served. I closed up the tray and threw it out. Disgusting. I could do so much better than this poser restaurant.

Any restaurant that does not take care to serve good tasting food besides dumping a bunch of salt on it (classic Joe's style) is a scam. I gave my trust and my money to this restaurant and they failed miserably to provide a good meal. I cook everyday...I personally know its not hard to make sure the food comes out right. The chef's at Joe's are no more concerned about making good food than a fast food joint.

This restaurant is OVERRATED. I would have rather eaten a cheap burger from BK than the sh*t they served me.

Went to Joe's yesterday for lunch. Had been there before so thought I knew what to expect (good comfort food, relaxed atmosphere). I have a 1-year old and, as happens, he had a few loud outbursts as learns how to use his voice. After one of these squeals, a young woman at the table adjacent to us got up and approached her server. It seems that our child and his voice were making her uncomfortable. That's fine - different strokes for different folks.

But, she proceeded to ask for the manager and demand that either she or we be moved to another area of the restaurant. Now I don't know what proper etiquette demands, but certainly not asking a family to relocate, especially at a place such as Joe's on a Sunday afternoon (this wasn't Mistral at 9pm on a Saturday!).

To Joe's credit, they did not, but they did cower to this young woman, sending over complimentary food and drinks upon being unable to move her. Seeing Joe's staff cower to this childish behavior left my wife and I feeling like we had done something wrong. This interaction also happened before we had been served so we spent the remainder of our meal on pins-and-needles.

I suppose this is bound to happen when you mix high-chairs with Newbury Street -- I just wish that Joe had been better able to identify who was the child in this situation.

I have been here a few times actually it is the first place I ever ate in boston. I ate there again last night and the condition of the place has dropped a little and the menu hasnt changed in four years. Saying that I had the rib eye and it was fine. Athmosphere is only ok.

More like Below Average Joe's Bar and Grill. My friend was raving about the baked chicken and it was garbage! The chicken had next to nothing flavor, and it was supposed to be stuffed with cornbread but it was laying next to it. Second, the cornbread was very dry.

Now I brushed off the bad meal and ordered a strawberry shortcake. I figured it wouldn't be that bad. Well I bit into the ice cream and strawberries and I was in a brief heaven until I took a bite of the biscuit. It was ridiculously buttery and didn't go well with the rest of the dessert.

Don't waste your time.

Last night we (party of 4) had the displeasure of dining at your restaurant in Woburn. I should have been for-warned by all the empty seats for 8 pm on a Sat. night. I?ll get straight to the point. First, on three occasions, our server, Kristen was nowhere to be found. I?m not talking about she was briefly in the kitchen, or checking on an order. I mean outside smoking a butt for 15 mins nowhere to be found. And once, at a time immediately after the busboys brought the wrong entrees to our table.(and why is it your busboys are serving the meals, anyway??)
Next; the slop you serve at this theme park restaurant. I had the sirloin, which is better at the Hilltop (where I do not eat).I sent back three times finally accepteing a piece of shoe leather, because the other three in my party were almost done with their meals. The haddock was uncooked. (Does the word safe-serve mean anything to you idiots??) Finally, Kristen brings the check. Then disappears once more (this time for 15 mins!), while we wonder why there are 4 more drinks on our check than we ordered.
Turns out in that while she disappeared we tried to order drinks with another server, only to have her put them on our bill, but never bring them. When Kristen finally magically reappeared, she corrected the bill, (offering no apology). I asked her if there was a staffing problem, and she replied ?no, not at all?.
Quite honestly, even if there had been, the restaurant was empty!!!
This is why I hate theme park type restaurants, opened by people who have never worked the business.
Oh, and by the way??.
Why is it that when I go to Abe & Louies, (which I don?t anymore) that?s all I see is waiters who want to sit and clown around with the customers??
Do those idiots really think people are there to buy a friend for the night??
But I guess it works for you. Oh well, the rich, and wanna-be rich are a strange lot??..

This was our friend's first time in Boston on a Sunday, so we thought we'd take him to a good, but quick brunch (the lines at other places were an hour long.) Joe's had been consistently good in the past.

This time, however, the host staff sent us upstairs before calling us downstairs, and had a very unprofessional manner, treating us like we were dumb for going up. This was our first time sitting in the downstairs bar, but with the game on, we didn't mind. They must start their new servers downstairs. While I'm sure he's a nice guy, our server wasn't a good server. His hands looked like he'd been working on cars, not as clean as I'd like for someone who was touching my food. Our orders took for ever to come to the table, and when they did, the food was not good. There was no chili on our nachos (even though it said chilli on the menu), and my filet benedict was soggy, the steak was rubbery, gristly and unseasoned, and the whole meal was just a little bit too cold.

Then I made the mistake of using the restroom. The trash can was overflowing despite the large number of staff running around. The bathroom overall was not very clean either, very much like a bar, and not at all what I expected from such a restaurant.

In the end, I was embarrassed because I had raved about the place, but the whole thing made me look like a liar.

It was a rainy afternoon and we were looking for a good American burger. We picked just the right place. Friendly staff greated us at the door and we were seated promptly. The restaurant was cozy in the mist of the afternoon rain. It was warm and welcoming. And did I mention the burgers? They were delicious. Great wait staff. Great prices.

I came to Joe's on my last day of vacation looking for a light lunch. I didn't know that eating by myself meant that I was to be treated poorly. The gentleman who greated me at the door was extremely nice; and the girl who took me to my table was also lovely - but that is where the courtious service ended. I had been sitting there for almost 10 minutes before my waitress finally came to take my order. I ordered the Pink Sangria (lovely, I highly recommend it), a salad (which was fine but not outstanding - fresh but the dressing was bland) and the crab cake app (which was mostly just beautiful sweet crab meat and little filler; I wish I'd ordered just that and the sangria). After that my waitress basically just plopped down my meal and went awol for the remainder of the time; except when the couple next to me ordered coffee and she reached ACROSS me to take the little container of sugar off my table and give it to them. She never asked me how my food was or if she could get me anything else. When she saw I had finished my food, she just brought me the check without a word. I know servers don't typically make much off of single patrons, but I have friends in the service industry so I try to tip usually 40% when I'm out alone. And while I'm too nice to not leave her anything, let's just say she was luck y to get ten. If you go to this establishment, make sure you bring a friend.

However, the "spicy" bloody mary wasn't spicy, my "Filet Mignon Eggs Benedict" came out w/ some really questionable cut of "beef" and a poached egg that was really over-cooked to a hard yoke. I asked for a substitution, and instead of a choice, my substitution request was made a side dish.
It's ok, but could be so much better to get to at least average.

Pros: Clean, Prompt Service, Kid Friendly

Cons: Chef?, Food?

This place is really great if you have special dietary needs. They care about things like that. The salad that I had was sensational. I know you might be thinking, "Oh that's great if you like salads, but what about me?" I urge you to just try it! My friend ordered a salad too and she is a changed woman. The food is spectacular. The value is good too, because you get a lot of food. Good date place too.

I agree the calm chowder is excellent, although I ate there on Thursday night, 2/27/03 around 7pm.
I ordered the clam chowder and they brought the chowder out with crackers. When the waiter came back I asked for crackers and they said they ran out. My boyfriend and I felt they should have sent someone out to a local grocery and bought crackers, afterall, what is chowder without the crackers!!!!

Overall Joe's has a standard for great service. I go there plainly because of it, and expect the best every time. Food is great, and even the salads rock (try the Honey Mustard Chicken Salad).

Definitly worth it.

Just becuz its in Boston rather than the burbs doesn't make this location any better than its mall counterparts. Way overrated. Eat and shop...shop and eat...Let's stick to the basics.

Eat - Beer is the phrase below the sign of the Cambridge JSM and it pretty much sums it up. My girlfriend and I go there at least 3 times a month for their burgers and wings. The best in town!!! They used to serve Newcastle, which is one of my top 5 favorite beers but they switched to something else that's "similar" but it's just not the same. There are 3 TVs above the bar which are almost always showing sports, a jukebox and 2 dartboards in back.

I like this restaurant, but NOT the fries. That's the one and only thing that I don't like about Joe's.

Thick, Rich, Creamy with plenty of clams. Chowda in a Bread Bowl is a meal in itself.

Ok......so I know that everyone thinks Bartley's is so great!! But really, it's not! My burger there was undercooked and all soggy by the time I got it home.

Now, Joe's burgers......that's what I'm talking about!! They are so big, and the cheddar is so yummy.....I get mine with mushrooms too! And they serve it with fries and a couple of onion rings...so you get to satisfy your ring and fry cravings all at the same time. And you don't come out stinking like at Bartleys!!!

I live in Western MA, and do ot hesitate to make the trip out to visit Joes. I love the food as well as a great view (Atlantic Ave), and great service. I am expecially partial to their superb bread that comes out hot before the meal and the clam chowder in the bread bowl. The crab cakes are also some of the best I have ever had!

Not only are the burgers phenomenal, but the boursin cheese topper is the best. I had never had boursin cheese before and decided to give it a whirl at Joe's. Now an addict, I need my Joe's burger regularly! Also, the service, drinks, and bread are very noteworthly.

It was absolutely horrible...They managed to spill wine on four of us and wre absolutely horrible about it. The waitress who spilled the wine on us was great and apologized and even offered the buy us drinks out of her pocket. The manager was another case. She was didn't even have the common courtesy to offer us complementary drink to replace the ones spilled on us. She was unbeleivable. We are never setting foot in that place again. Shame on them....
