I spent 5 years growing out a butchered hair cut. The worst part is my sister endured worse.

I've been there only three or four times and have found most of the people there friendly even though if truth be told I was a little intimidated when I first came in.

Paula Donovan, the owner of Blue, is a real professional. There is NOTHING about hair she doesn't know or hasn't done with excellence. I've been to Newbury St. salons, to New Yorks salons and all over. Paula rocks right up there with the best of the best. The ONLY place to go for a perm.

I found Blue after my regular stylist colored my hair the wrong shade. Anna spent a generous amount of time with me explaining how to fix the color without damaging my hair and listening to all my concerns about my cut and color. I was thrilled with the level of attention and professional service I received. I walked out of Blue that day knowing that I had found my new salon! Not to mention I can't remember the last time so many of my friends and co-workers complimented my hair! Blue is worth every penny!

The number is (617) 497-5645??. She's been cutting my hair for four years and I'm happy to have found her. Wouldn't bother going to Blue but for Kerry. I agree with other posters about the negative atmosphere created by the owner of the Salon. Creepy.

I recently went to Blue for the first time. Lets just say the consult I was told about with the creative director never happened. Upon arrival I was told my hairdresser would be a girl named Anna & that she would be with me shortly. When I saw her I was excited because she looked great & I thought when I left I would too. Much to my surprise after being quoted & accepting a price that I thought was a bit much the damn girl barely even touched me. She sat at the desk or was gone the whole time i was there. I felt like she literally took my money and ran. My hair came out good but she didn't do it, & for that reason I wont be back. Why would I pay for something I did not get? Beware of the scam..... if your looking for students still in training at this "teaching" salon... I suggest go to a beauty school. It would be a whole lot cheaper.

Pros: Nice Decor, High End Products

Cons: The Stylist you pay for does not do the work.

I hate to write a bad review but wish I had known before used this salon. The thing the finally made me quit the salon was the parking situation. You have to use the public lots in Lexington and finding a space can be challenging. My hairdresser had to go and move my car for me when the two hours was up. The salon has a somewhat snooty atmosphere and the hairdressers seem to be intimidated by the owner, Paula. I don't get this as she seems friendly enough to the clients. However, it creates a certain atmosphere. The Salon is super expensive for what you get. On the positive side, I do believe that the haircare is good quality but you don't have to spend so much to get the same thing.

I am in my late 40s and they don't attempt to make me look like I am in my 20s. In the four years I have been going to Blue, I have used several stylists and find that most listen carefully to what you want.

The owner, Paula definitely strives to achieve a professional atmosphere and she succeeds except for herself. She is brash and can be verbally abusive to her staff. Many days she is moody and will not greet her customers.. I have several friends who stopped going to Blue because of her and her reputation is well known. I gave the salon two stars because of her. You have to know what you are walking into. As mentioned in a previous review, Anna is a fantastic stylist

Why did I write this review now? I recently had my hair styled and Paula was in one of her moods and I almost said something to her face. But I didn't and am now taking the coward's way of expressing my frustration

Cons: Owner, Owner, Owner and Cost

Anna has been doing my hair for years and it always comes out great. Her work is consistent and she listens to what I want even though she has been doing my hair for years. The staff at Blue is very professional and I always feel comfortable. They do not have rock star attitudes like in the city.
They also carry Bare Minerals (the only makeup I can use) so I get that there too.

I just recently had my hair colored and cut at Blue. I cannot express in words what a feeling it is leaving the salon. Its like being on Cloud 9. From the minute, I entered the salon, I encountered flawless customer service. The stylist, Anna, was thoughtful and listened extensively to my concerns. Paula the owner was also very informative and made recommendations on how I should be wearing my hair. At the end of my experience (and it truly is an experience), I left the salon feeling beautiful and regained an inner strength and confidence. In these tough economic and stressful times, it is important to be prudent with costs etc. However, the way I look at it, I'm worth every penny I spend on myself because when I leave Blue, they dont realize it but they have empowereed me to be strong and beautiful which inevitably makes me a better professional, wife and mother. Congrats Paula and all stylists at Blue for a job well done.

My wife's styling requests were simply ignored in favor of a poorly executed bob, not at all what she asked for. They gave her the money back, but there is no quick fix for a bad cut, and no excuse for not listening to clearly given instructions. If the stylist had any questions or wasn't clear, she should have asked. Bad service at high prices.

Dear insightfulconsumer -
As the manager at Blue, I would like to apologize for your experience. I appreciate your feedback and honesty as it helps us to grow as a company. I would like to address your concerns about your visit.

As an added value, we always quote for services. The reason for the quote is so that the client can feel comfortable with their purchase before being surprised at the desk. We have found that clients greatly appreciated knowing the cost for their services ahead of time. When someone does have a tremendous amount of hair, we quote for extra product. If extra product is not used, we will not charge for it. Also, we have many wonderful specials that can help keep your hair beautiful and affordable.

In terms of your disappointment with your haircut, I am truly sorry. Here at Blue we have advanced training and always do our best to make every cut and color special. We have many systems in place to help you chose the proper stylist for you. We work as a team so it is not unusual for clients to try other stylists. We have a range of cuts from $49 and up. It is all about you, upon your first time arrival, the artisitic director will place you with the most suitable stylist. If the stylist does not work for you in terms of price or any other reason you can feel comfortable to try another stylist.

Since we all learn from each other, we consider ourselves students of hair. This is no exception for our owner, Paula. She learns from us as much as we learn from her with all of her experience as a stylist. I'm sorry you felt uncomfortable but I'm sure she was merely admiring the stylists work.

We would like to extend a complimentary hair cut with either the stylist of your choice or if you prefer, the director can place you with the most suitable stylist based on your hair type and lifestyle. Please call and ask for Anna or Paula and we would be more than happy to extend our best services to you.

Many Thanks,
Anna

Yikes! I've been there three times and twice I was given quotes..was charged for 'extra product' ostensibly because I have a lot of hair. The two stylists who did my hair were nice enough although their cuts were nothing special (I expected more for more than $70 for just the cut portion) and they insisted on coloring my hair much darker than my natural color. The last time I was there the owner was also there and she made me nervous listening to her bark orders and get upset that they were out of a certain kind of tea!
She also kept staring at my hair and watched my stylist very closely even though I believe she was among the most senior stylists. The whole situation was a bit unnerving and I just can't justify their prices (I'm not sure given the overall experience that Blue can justify them either!)

I was going to let it go... but when I saw that someone else's hair was destroyed before their wedding, I had to speak up! PAULA IS A DISASTER!! DO NOT go to this salon! Once my junior stylist was done giving me a tiny trim (just as I asked for), Paula came over to "inspect" the cut and proceeded to cut my bangs to mid forehead while at the same time doubling their thickness! I was utterly stunned - I didn't know what to say. Paula kept telling me that she had somehow given me a more "sophisticated" look (how looking like a third-grader who cut her own bangs is more sophisticated, I don't know!!) When I got home, I called and asked if they could fix it (I'm not kidding you when I tell you that I actually asked for hair extensions!), so they had me come back in so they could "teach" me how to flat iron my typically perfectly straight hair into place! How insulting! Paula, meanwhile" admitted that yes, my bangs might be "a little" too short but that I shouldn't worry "they will grow out in time for your wedding" She was so openly mocking of my displeasure! I then had to FIGHT to get my money back and too make matters worse, I couldn't stop crying the entire weekend. And, for the record, by the day of my wedding my bangs were still not long enough to put into my up-do. Blue is a NIGHTMARE and should be out of business. With all of the salons in Lexington, there are plenty of other choices. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!

My mistake for not checking out this salon before I went. Paula chopped all of my length off after saying she would leave the length, then when I expressed how horrified I was at the awful cut, Paula stood behind my chair and said to her poor assistant "give her a free product and apologize for me". ARE YOU KIDDING.

I would never recommend this salon to anyone.

I went to Paula for a consultation for corrective color services and decided to trust her with my hair before my wedding. I was misled in believing she (the owner) was doing all of the work on my hair...she only discussed different formulas with other stylists and had them apply the color. I was concerned the color would be too dark because my hair was already very porous....Paula assured me it would be fine.
After the color, they brought me to Paula for my haircut. I asked her for only a trim...just to shape it a little. ( I was planning on having my hair down for my wedding with big curls.) After approximately 1 minute, Paula had exceeded to chop multiple layers in my hair. I panicked and told her it was too short! I asked her why she cut it so fast! She said she has many years of experience. She had someone else blowdry my hair while she watched. My hair was almost black, choppy, and flat. I spent almost $400.00 including tips (for everyone involved) and the color washed out completely after 10 days. This was a very disappointing experience. I definitly do not recommend trusting this salon. I wasted my money on a temporary color that I could have done myself and a horrific haircut to ruin my wedding!

Well, it's pretty simple. The cuts are good. But the service is beyond terrible, with tons of attitude - and not in a cool way. I am always uncomfortable with how rude the owner is with her staff, always berating them. She is incredibly moody. She "checks" all her staffs work, and finds a problem, to make sure they look bad and she looks great. Stay away unless you want to witness an abusive environment.

I must say, I had a lovely experience this time around. I was greeted warmly when I arrived, was offered a cup of coffee, and introduced to my new stylist (because I got the Blue Cut, I didn't know until I arrives who would be cutting my hair). She spent a very long time listening to me, asking questions, and offering suggestions. She was absolutely meticulous about cutting my hair, practically one strand at a time! Plus, it was so refreshing to have a stylist who didn't push the latest styles and those pricy Bumble and bumble products! I especially appreciated that she didn't try to talk me into their haircoloring services, which I have no interest in. As long as they continue this high level of customer service, I will keep coming back and recommending them hight. (P.S. If you're lucky enough to have an experience like I did, be sure to TIP GENEROUSLY!

Cons: Loud music; coffee could use cream (not just skim milk) and disposable cups

After having my second baby, I looked for a good local salon to get my hair cut and colored. Blue is on the same street as my pediatrician so I tried it. The stylists do not listen to you. The owner cuts everyone's hair short even if you want it long or to grow it out. I was given a razor cut which is not appropriate for my hair type. It was hard to maintain even after I purchased all the "recommended" products. The color was too dark and the next time they added red highlights which made me look like a clown.
Overall, a very disappointing experience.

All I wanted was a good blunt cut. I'm a suburban soccer mom and don't have time to fuss with my hair. I had no interest in the numerous products they were pushing. I resented that the stylist and the owner criticized my haircolor, calling it "a homemade job." The stylist gave me what she wanted and occasionally turned my hair over to her assistant-in-training, who had to be reminded to pay attention. To my horror, the razor was brought out and my hair was chopped into layers. They put tons of goo on it just to hold it all together -- "styling products," they called them. From the moment I returned home, I couldn't do a thing with it. That was weeks ago, and I'll never go back there again.

I went to Blue for the first time last month. I loved it! I received the $34 studio cut with Leah and it was the best haircut that I have ever had. We had a long consultation and the products that she suggested for me were perfect. I am so happy that I found Blue, I will definetly be going back to Leah. Thank you!

I went to this salon as a referral from a friend I had been growing out a BAD haircut and was terrified to try again. I was greeted by an assistant who happily walked me in to meet my stylist who sat down and went through a 15 minute consultation with me before I was sent to the shampoo bowl. I felt at ease and relaxed. My stylist did exactly what I wanted and checked every piece of my hair for accuracy. She was friendly, and comforting. I, as well as my husband, friends and family LOVE my new style. I FINALLY feel beautiful again. Thank you blue!

I went in for the promotional studio cut for $34- and only wanted a trim, less then one inch off. Watch out! My stylist did Not do what I asked her for and took the liberty of razor cutting my long hair almost to a create a mullet. She then tried curling and applying products to make it look better. She had an apathetic attitude and I had to take a shower to get rid of this "do" she created. My hair now feels thinner and I'm hoping this will just grow out....

I have been going to Blue for over two years, and can't say enough about the wonderful staff, the atmosphere and the excellence in hair cutting and color !! From the moment you are greeted by Linda ( you can't help but feel great after a minute with her) to the dynamo , Kerry, who colors my hair to perfection ( along with allot of laughs !), to the supurb cutting style of the owner, Paula Donovan, it is a fabulous experience !! The one time I didn't let Paula do what she thought best,I was back 2 weeks later and she did what should have been done the first time-AT NO Charge !!!

My family and I used to all go to Blue. First of all the owner is extrmely rude. She is always standing over her stylists even when they know what they are doing. The owner charges 90 dollars and doesn't even blow dry your hair, so you then have to tip out the stylist who blows our your hair as well. The owner is always yelling and talking about other stylists. In the begininng she cute very well but the more we went the worst and shorter she became. Some of the other girls are great but again, they usually end up leaving. Also, they try to push products on you as if you didn't spend enough money as it was.

I went to Julie last week, and I hate to say it but I have chunks of my hair taken out, big giant holes in my hair, which I could see being created while she weilded her razor blade. I feel like this kind of haircut could have been avoided if she had paid any attention to me at all, she was late, her assistant was more attentive and helpful than her, and she barely said a word or looked at me in the mirror, she was too busy looking everywhere else in the salon! I felt neglected and ripped off even though the owner told me i looked fabulous. I, nor anyone who looks at my haircut, which I've had to try to get fixed, will go to that salon or that stylist again.

The stylist was rude, arrogant, and her skills were, well, unimpressive. What I paid at Blue was about the same as the amount I pay for a top stylist on Newbury Street. But the haircut? So horrible.

It was going fine; I was treated well while I waited for 20 minutes. The stylist was attentive and discussed a plan with me, proceeded with a luxurious shampoo, then started to cut. Then the owner, flys over- seemingly out of nowhere- oblivious to the plan- interrupts my stylist, starts applying products, then starts trying out the latest edgy techniques she just learned in NYC. The results were not what I requested. I was horrified by the lack of respect that the owner showed both to me and to my stylist. And now I have a wacky cut.

My mother, my sisters and my father swear by this place. They love getting their hair done there and rave about it. My only experience with Blue however was horrendous. The technician was nice, but I had the most excruciatingly painful wax I've ever had. The technician did give me a good shape but she was incredibly slow and I've never had such a painful wax in my life. I was charged 30 dollars which would have perhaps been understandable if the wax had been good. It was tortuous though. I couldn't wait to leave. I was also kept waiting for a half hour plus when I arrived. So although my family loves getting their hair done there, I would definitely tell you to avoid getting waxed there. I can pay someone else a much lower price to do a much better job.

After researching many salons in the area, blue stands out as the top. The staff is well trained, attentive and professional. As with any salon, the experience is designated by price. I asked for a senior cutter and colorist and my results were exactly what I expected. I know that the lower end prices in salons are the less experienced stylists, but all of the stylists work together, and there is definitely a signature colorist. My stylist was interrupted 3 times to help. I would reccommend you research the staff before. My experience at the shampoo bowl was worth the money in itself...heaven. They do "quote" you prior so be prepared. Truly amazing work. I'll be back

From my experiences at Blue I have found the owner to be very overpowering and demanding. The atmosphere when she is around is obviously more uncomfortable for the clients and the staff(shes there everyday except for wednesdays). Stylist are great, pleasant to talk to and seem well trained, but all the good ones eventually leave. Definately way over-priced for sevices and products(I've seen the same products for less on Newbury st.). I will not be returning, I'm tired of paying for the owners mid-life crisis.

I moved to Boston from New York, and a friend of mine recommended that I try Blue. I gave it a shot, and am very glad that I did. It was a first rate haircut--I got mine done in NY at Bumble & bumble, and they are trained there, so I knew I was getting the most recent in cutting technique and style. Julie, my stylist did an amazing job giving me a really arty, perfectly layered longer cut that followed the shape of my head perfectly. She really took her time and made sure that it was right. I've found my salon and stylist.

I was sorely disappointed with Blue. After hearing that I worked as a full-time waitress/bartender, the stylist stopped looking at my hair and told me her rates and asked if I could afford them -- I felt that was very rude. My cut was uneven, but when I asked her to fix it, she told me that the style needed to be uneven to look good. My highlights were too light (my coloring needs warm tones, but she went with a very ashy, light blonde). I was too intimidated to ask her to fix them. Basically, I felt terrible when I left, and was so unhappy that I went to another salon to have my color fixed and the cut evened out 3 weeks later. My experience at Blue was very stressful. Perhaps the other stylists are better -- I wouldn't know because I will definitely not go there again.

I have searched for a very long time for a stylest with such skill. Blue is a bit pricey but the safest bet for a great cut and color evertime. I have been a client for over 3 years.

My experience with Blue was simply awful. I am astounded at the high rating here given the overwhelming number of negative reviews. I have several friends who feel the same way. The salon is shockinglyu overpriced, the owner's relationship with employees is nothing short of bizarre and the results are erratic. I had one okay experience but the following visits were disasterous. Paying $300 to have my haircolor ruined is unacceptable. My request for subtle, natural highlights in my naturally blong/light brown hair turned me into a brassy helmut head blonde requiring a visit to another salon for corrective color. In addition, the haircut services are nothing to write home about.

I had spotty results- bad haircuts several times, that were rushed. The worst thing was that the staff were snobby, and the prices were off the charts, constantly increasing without notice. I was charged for extra product- even with short hair. A few times the color was not even rinsed completely. My appointments were frequently cancelled and the stylists hate the owner. Enough said. Don't go.

My first haircut at Blue turned out horrible. When the stylist did my color she was lost. The end result was hidious and definitely not worth $300. I did go back with a different stylist but that did not help. Before starting your color, they have to check with the owner on how much to quote. They whisper in your back and come up with an absurd price. You feel like a guinea pig while the owner trains her staff, since she is constantly quizzing them and watching over them. That and having to listen to stylists talking badly about the owner is unprofessional. It reflects in their work. They seem to forget about the customer who pays lots of money and expects an outstanding service in return. Once that expectation is not met, he or she goes somewhere else. That's what I did.

Initially I had a cut and asked the stylist about my color. She said the salon owner was consulted for new color clients. When the owner was consulted at my next visit, she disagreed with the stylist about how to proceed. The stylist seemed stressed, which was disconcerting. In the middle of processing I asked the stylist the rationale for how she was doing the color, and she said, "honestly, I don't know." What?!?!? The stylist has worked at Blue for 4 years... why the need to consult with the owner? Also, the owner's plan was quoted (for corrective color and hairline foils, no cut) at $320-$350. I told the stylist to skip one part of the process, which saved $120 and looked just right. There was a weird dynamic going on that made me very uncomfortable. I liked the stylist but I won't be going back.

I have been going there for about 2 years. I have inconsistent results- sometimes great other times she rushes it, forgets what she used the last time for color, and does bad cut. Other times she is magnificent. The prices are over the top for that kind of experience- for the money- you should get perfection. What really irks me though, is that I have short hair, but I am always charged for "extra" product. If I spend $180.00 for a 1 process color and cut every 5 weeks, don't nickel and dime me, please. Also, some of the reception staff are snooty. Also, I was cancelled at the last minute twice. No apology.

I've been going to 2 Newbury Street salons over the past several years. My last stylist left and I couldn't handle trying someone else there so I thought I'd give Blue a try. A friend always looks amazing and she gets her hair cut there. And it was worth it -- it's really different. Laid back, cool waiting area and nice help. No annoying attitude or snootiness. She "fixed" my hair--it's been frumpy and she cut some amazing layers into the front and got rid of a lot of weight. I also bought some of their Bumble and bumble products. I'll definitely be back.

When I visited Blue I was expecting a very uptight salon. I was terribly mistaken. The staff is very friendly and very well educated in their respective fields. The ambiance is what every woman desearves, clean, elegant, modern and very service oriented. I recieved a thorough consultation, and a phenominal cut and color.
