I shop at this store often and have received consistently excellent customer service. Most recently, I was in need of a recommendation, and the associate from children's books who spoke to me on the phone gave me detailed information about several books without my even mentioning their authors. She was a true expert, friendly, and more than helpful. Without being asked to, she offered to put all the books we discussed aside for me at the register so I could read through them before choosing one. When I came into the store, as I was deliberating over the books, another associate--again without my asking him to--checked the store's sales figures on the books I was considering and told me which was most popular. I was VERY impressed, as I always am. What a great staff!!!!!

I recently had a very poor experience at this Barnes & Noble. A very disagreeable woman (whose name/handle appears to be MJ on my receipt) waited on me. I will say, it was near to store close but the store was still open. Hearing the store-closing announcement, I brought my purchases (which totaled over $100) to the checkout desk. She did not greet me, began to ring me up, and then snatched my parking validation ticket out of my hand. I'm glad she stamped it, but every action was like pulling teeth.

With definite attitude, she asked me if I was a member of their B&N program. When I replied that I didn't know and asked if it was a free membership, she replied "no" and then didn't explain anything further. When I got home later, my receipt said I could have saved over $20 on my purchase if I were a member. Since I have discovered it costs $25 to become a member and I'm a voracious reader, I would have purchased it. I will also point out that there was no line the entire time I was being rung up (so it's not like she was in a hurry to get me out of the way to help other customers).

As I was leaving, a customer walked up and asked MJ courteously if she could check a price on a book for her, to which MJ (not even looking at the customer) said "No I cannot" and then looked at the door.

This is not my idea of customer service. I don't care how close it is to closing time, if you work retail, your job is to please the customer and be helpful. It wouldn't have even taken a smile to make me feel welcome, just a little common courtesy and some explanation about the member program without making me feel like I was an imbecile for not knowing already. I don't recommend this Barnes & Noble since they don't seem to be able to encourage their staff to act like courteous adults.

I'm more of a Borders Girl myself, but since I was new in town I hit the first Bookstore I found. This Barnes and Noble was closer to the house only by several feet then Borders and I was very pleasantly surprised when I entered it. The atmosphere was very relaxed and I was surprised to see they had such a nice selection and such good prices. The staff was helpful once I found them and checkout was quick. I've visited several times since.
