.

From my experience at Walt's, many of the newer reviews are completely accurate.

1. The owner takes over half of the store's stock with him to gaming conventions on a regular basis. I don't go in all the time, but I would say the stock is gone somewhere between 1-3 weekends per month. I cannot say how many times I have visited the store and there was virtually nothing I was interested in buying.

Contrary to a few of the below reviews, Dan is not good at ordering things when customers ask. I have been in the store numerous times where customers have come in to complain to the employees who work on the weekends about special orders not being in OR being sold instead of held.

2. This store has to be one of the most unclean game stores I have been to. I have checked out all of the game stores in the Greater Baltimore Area at least once. However, none of them rival Walt's in filthiness. It looks like the place is never vacuumed. The worst is the bathroom. It is reminiscent of a dungeon. There are always random sheets of newspaper, paper towels, and toilet paper strewn about the bathroom floor. This is not a bathroom I would let my child use.
_______________________________________________________
3. If you are looking for a store with friendly customer service and a grand dedication to it's customers, you should look elsewhere. I have witnessed customers who simply like to browse and take time to make purchase decisions be rudely rushed and put off by the store worker.
_______________________________________________________
4. Dan - it seems like he is the owner, but at least the manager. It appears that he only works during the week, while having two younger employees work for him on the weekends. The younger employees seem to be relatively knowledgeable about the products and services the store offers. However, I feel bad for them when it comes convention time. They are left on the weekends with an empty store.

I am largely a magic the gathering customer (some board games here and there). The magic binders all have outdated prices (generally the prices are a lot higher than online). Dan does not like to work with you on the prices. He usually gives some sort of execuse, like "that is a really good card." Which, for a card that is marked for $3, but is actually 50 cents online, that is hard to believe. The employees on the weekends try to help out where they can, but are always scared of Dan finding out that they tried to give the customer the correct (current) price.
_______________________________________________________
5. I constantly hear the Yugioh players complain about the prize support. As a magic player, I can agree with them. Dan takes a dollar out of each tournament entry fee for this thing called "The Chair Fund." This chair fund is supposed to pay for new chairs for the store. I really do not understand this as game stores generally provide chairs free of charge.
_______________________________________________________
6. The moral of the story is that there is much to be desired in the way Walt's is operated. If you want a game store that has fair prices, and fosters a clean, comfortable, and friendly playing environment, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

After going weekly to Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments held here for about a month I encountered an old man behind the counter. He appeared to be the manager or owner as he ordered around the only other employee there, the one running the tournament. This man is rude, greedy, and is the reason I would recommend you stay far away from this store. He tried to extort a child, teenager possibly but very young, for $12 when he sold cards to a friend (I had seen them both often during the weeks of coming here which is how I knew they were friends). After assuring the young man that it must be a joke the owner wouldn't kick him out over $12 for selling cards when I had myself just bought cards from his employee; not through the store, directly from his employee. After seeing this man be selective in whom he chooses to enforce his selling policy (if there is such a thing) upon I left the store vowing never to return. I advise you to stay clear as well and don't ever bring your kids here or let them go here. If he'll try to extort one child for money because he thought he could, then he'll certainly try to extort your kids too

I have been living near Walt'z Cards & Games since being an infant nearly. I will explain 3 topics, in the formats for you to understand the best, and worst qualities of this store.

CARDS >such as< (Yugioh, Magic, Pokemon etc.)

________MAGIC________

It would appear that Walt'z carries a strong hold on Magic The Gathering and even has quite a large selection, to include most of them are in Mint Condition or VERY near Mint Condition. Not only does Walt'z carry large amounts of each set, sometimes not the full set, but the majority of it, Walt'z also carries a junk box, full of commons and there are also boxes of lands, completely cheap. However, some of the older, Mint Condition Cards are a little expensive depending on what you are looking for. Walt'z also holds tournaments for MTG, call the store for details.

_________YUGIOH__________

Yugioh seams to be one of Walt'z prime high sales transactions. With kids, and adults joining together on Saterday tournaments as well as Wednsday and rarely Sundays... massive amounts of card booster packs are constantly sold. The tournaments seam to always be 5 U.S dollars to enter, and even if you lose, you get a pack of cards, but the winner gets two. You can also play the newly received Deulist Terminal for some rare cards with a nice value to them....only a dollar a piece. Yugioh singles are sold in Walt'z, however the selection is sadly extremely minimal and many of those have damage to them, making a lot of them not worth getting. Though, Walt'z does carry quite rare Mint Condition yugioh cards when they do get a hold of them, and sell them usually cheaper than what can be found on the internet, so it is a plus...

_______SERVICE________

Dan, the manager....what can I say...he is a geek. Dan is a man who is quite intelligent but will talk up a storm about board games and WWII... so be careful how you start your conversations, unless you like these political and nerdy comments and conversations. He is quite willing to do SMALL but still existing negotiations for cards...but if you try to pull the power trip card he will immediately decline your offer...even if it is the only copy of the card you offer him. So be sure, he is not the one to knock up with in a negotiation. However, trying to add that extra dollar shouldn't be a problem with him...

_________OVERALL_________

Overall, as long as you follow the rules at Walt'z...the tournament experience is fun, the singles can be cheap....and the conversations friendly.. just don't steal from the place...or damage things, or act like you know who the boss is (thinking you are king ****) and things will run very smoothly.

Remember to buy the NEW ORDER OF CHAOS booster packs... 7 packs for 15 dollars or a whole box of 24 packs for 75 dollars.

I haven't been here in a few years. I know things have changed since they moved their location a few times. From my past experiences, it's been a great place to me.

HORRIBLE, is the best way to describe Walt's Cards. I only shop for Magic the gathering currently, their stock of Magic cards is great compared to some other stores however, as other writers have stated. The Binders all get packed up twice or more a month and are gone for the weekend, so to be safe, better off not making any long weekend trips to this place. On top of that, the service is abysmal. I can't say I've ever felt as if someone in a store ever tried NOT to sell me what I wanted, until today. I stopped at the store to pick up several cards and the store clerk told me his binders were still packed up from the weekend and that all he could sell were packs. This would have been a fine answer, but the binders were all strewn in baskets on the floor right in front of me. I'm not picky, I'd have helped him look through them, but it wasn't until I told him I'd drove 20 minutes across town to shop that he even offered to look through. After which, we quickly found one of the cards I needed only for him to tell me it was 7.50. This card was from a set that had cycled out of rotation more then 5 years ago and currently sells everywhere else for under a dollar. Without any negotiation, or anything he huffed put everything away and asked me to come back tomorrow. No thanks sir, I'll gladly do my shopping at Canton Games, or Washington St Books. Both have GREAT staff.

Walt's Cards & Games is the name Dan bought with the store; it's a leftover from what it used to be. Dan still carries A LOT of cards, but his focus is GAMING. Card games (all kinds, CCGs are biggest there), Board games (anything from Monopoly up to Axis & Allies), table-top miniatures wargaming such as Warhammer 40K or BattleTech (and EVERYTHING in-between, including fantasy and Napoleonics) - and if he hasn't done it, he'll try it. Star Fleet Battles, Saganami Island, StarCraft, he doesn't care. Just give him a game!
Space is limited, so sometimes he won't have what you're looking for IN-STOCK - but he WILL ORDER ANYTHING YOU WANT THAT CAN BE ORDERED. If it's something SUPER-EXPENSIVE, he MIGHT ask for a deposit, if he doesn't know you - but if he can't get it, he'll return the deposit, too.
Only ONE warning: DON'T go in there on a slow day if you don't have a lot of time to spend - Dan WILL talk your ear off if you give him ANY idea you're friendly. He's a friendly guy, and like all RPG gamers, he loves to chat, if he has the time.

Great shop for board games, CCGs etc. They carry some out of print games, miniatures, board games, etc. Dan runs the shop and his knowledge extends from the mundane to the obscure. He is very willing to chat about your play style, favorite game mechanic, etc. and makes excellent recommendations if you are looking for a new games to get into! If there is a hard to get HOT ticket item, he is very willing to order or set a copy aside for you. Walt's hosts some tourneys and game nights in the store, and is very accomodating to their customers.

The store does not focus on Sports cards despite the name, and ask Dan about it (he will tell you an entertaining and slightly sad story). You can of course get games online, bulk (orders above $100) for less than retail, but I encourage people to support local business (the money goes back into your community). Especially, support local game shops or they will disappear and you will be left with Walmart lame games and higher prices.

I love Walts.

If you play 15mm historical war games or Magic: The Gathering, Walt's is the place for you. Otherwise, not so much. On average, at least twice a month he takes anything else out to conventions and leaves his shelves bare. His Gamesworkshop stuff is all years old (including the paints), but you can be sure the prices are current. The one shinning spot is he keeps the Reaper mini's well stocked when he doesn't have them at a convention. As for tips, go to Legends, Renaissance Games, or Games and Stuff.

I called the store looking for an Al Bumbry baseball card. I got a very quick No which is fine but when I asked for any ideas on where to find such a card I got no help whatsover and felt like the person who answered (he said his name was Walt so I guess he was the owner) had zero interest in me or my business. Very disappointing experience.

I really like Walts Sports Cards and think it is a great place to stop. They have a good selection of individual cards and wax boxes and are up to date with newer releases. They also have a good number of older cards and the prices for everything are fair and no worse than any place else. I have always enjoyed the hospitality of the store and you feel welcomed there. Definitely worth checking out.
