From the moment we entered the school we knew this was a safe place we would feel comfortable leaving our children. This was the first time that our kids were away from us and TYS staff was awesome with helping us with this transition. Both the staff and directors took personal incentive to our children's development and social skills. Our oldest child is now in Kindergarten and TYS played an enormous role in preparing him for school. Currently our 4yr old daughter is at the TYS. With the help of TYS our daughter is part of the reading group and I am excited to say my daughter at the age of 4 can read and write. We have been impressed with the professionalism and genuine kindness from the entire staff. I would recommend TYS to anyone who is looking for an awesome place that will care for your child and prepare them for school. Both of our children are always excited about learning new things and we know that the TYS played a important role in that.

Both of my children have attended The Young School (TYS) in Gambrills since they were 3 months old. They are now 4.5 and 2 years old and I could not be more pleased with the love and care they continue to receive from the TYS. I toured ALL the daycare centers in and around Gambrills and TYS was by far the best. I knew immediately upon entering the building that TYS was different. The environment was calm, the center was clean and the kids were happily into their various activities. Before making my final decision, I often dropped by at various times of the day and the environment was always the same calm, clean and happy. I have never regretted my decision. The teachers and Directors are truly vested in the development of my children. Any concern or question Ive ever had was answered professionally and promptly. And my children continue to thrive both socially and academically. I can honestly say that TYS staff are a part of our family. As a working parent, choosing a daycare is one of the biggest decisions you will make for your children. That being said, choosing TYS was one of the BEST decisions Ive made for my children.

We've had our daughter at The Young School (TYS) since January 2012 and couldn't be happier with the school -- so much so that we have enrolled our second child for this fall. When we initially made our decision to enroll at TYS, we were at the top of a number of waiting lists, to include another popular top-tier school in Hanover. The prices were comparable (the other school was more expensive), but we felt the approach TYS takes towards teaching independence through trial and error, hands-on exploration, and varying solutions to a problem set were more in line with our parenting style and what we were looking for. The class sizes for the first two years are small and very focused on the care of the infant/young toddler with no more than six children and two teachers per class room, which is very important to us as parents. The facility is clean, the staff is friendly, and normally when we pick our daughter up she isn't ready to go home! We have referred a number of people to TYS because our experience has been that it is a good, safe environment for our daughter to learn and grow-up in. We have told people time and time again that as parents, when we drop our daughter off at TYS each day we feel confident that she is being well taken care of and we can focus on our day jobs, which is in itself worth the cost of enrollment.

So have had my child in the program for the last 4 years. In the beginning the school was filled with carrying and loving teachers. Since the new management within the last year, there is no personalization and my child is just a number in an institution. I can not tell you how many teachers have left. One of my first questions during the tour was if there was a high turn over rate and they told me no. I can understand teachers come and go but at the rate they were going was redicilous. Then they get replaced with teachers with none to little experience and have no idea what the philosophy is the school stands by. I asked a new teacher what Reggio Emilia philosophy was and she looked at me dead in the face and said "I don't know" and than turned around and finished her breakfast. When I have issues with the teachers and go to the head director, I get such an attitude from her and am told to schedule a meeting and to not be late because she is "busy" What kind of head director treats parents like they are a door mat when we basically pay a second mortgage payment just for our child to go to this school. I am utterly disgusted with how this school has turned out and I can not wait till this summer is over so I can be done with this school.

Our children were with the Young School for a month. During that time, one child not yet potty trained often did not have his diaper changed (after suspecting it, we used a different brand for the school than we had at home) the entire day resulting in several rashes that we had to treat at home. Two times, staff was not present while three year olds were eating breakfast. If one had choked, if it weren't for parents walking thru, no one would have been present. One late morning we took a glove to the school because our child we forgot to send it and there was no staff member at the front desk/door area. Anyone could have walked out or walked in (the "security" code was 1-2-3-4) and no one would have notice. And we heard staff using profanity two times in our presence, once with children present, one time without. Also, during the month our children were the only ones not provided a binder detailing their process or activities and staff rarely could answer questions about their day. The "lead" teacher took off for several weeks to care for a loved one (a noble cause) but no one was available to step in...no one was in charge. It was total chaos. Finally, we were told when we toured that they had to check with those on the "waiting list" and when we brought this up to a staff member / teacher (that we were glad that others didn't take the slot) they laughed and said "there is no waiting list, they tell that to everyone". Perhaps our experience was the exception - but there are a plentiful supply of choices and one might wise to carefully consider whether the Young School is really the best fit.

My daughter started at The Young School this past August and it was one of the best decisions my husband and I have made for our daughter so far. She is two years old and when she started she very seldom spoke and sometimes had a hard time interacting with the other children. The teachers in my daughters classroom and the cottage director have helped her to come out of her shell and begin to thrive!! She just recently started speaking in full sentences and uses her words to express her feelings instead of just screaming. Aside from talking my daughter has learned different social skills, and cognitive skills which are reinforced through songs, art, and freedom of exploration in a richly designed environment to help them support a child's need to learn through play. Not only do I love my child's teachers but the other staff members and administrators as well. I love being able to speak with the staff about how their schooling is going and about what we did over the weekend or what our travel plans are. Each day teachers from The Young School make my family and myself feel as though we are important and loved and they are always there to help us whenever we need it. Thank You so much for all that you do everyday!

What can I really say? I have been working at the school for over five years now. I always go above what is required of myself and that includs my cottage family. I am truly sorry that the school has offended anyone and it just pulls on my heart strings. I never consider any of my childeren in the school as money. I take care of them like they were my own! If the office came off as being rude...I cant speek for them and I am sorry that people have felt that way. What I can say is that I am always happy to see my extended family mon-fri and sometimes on the weekends. I just wish everyone will find place that they are happy with and if its with our team then wonderful and if not thats ok too. Best of luck to us all and the child care search...

Take it from a first time mom who did insane amounts of research on west county daycare options ?? The Young School is top notch. My baby started at 4 months old, and she has been thriving ever since. The teachers are great ?? very caring and totally dedicated to the children. I can??t tell you how many times I??ve come to pick her up in the evening to find her happily playing with her friends, or simply snuggling with the teachers. It really makes me feel good about where I leave her, especially when I hate to do so! Another really positive aspect is the school??s policy of having the teachers follow the children as they "shift" to the next room (Infant to Todfant to Toddler, etc.) I think the stability and continuity of care is a great benefit. And finally, I have had nothing but positive experiences with the schools administrators. Believe me, as a first time mom, I called the school. A lot. They got to know me pretty well! They never made me feel like I was asking too much or calling too often. My great impressions of the school from the beginning have set the tone for what has been a VERY positive daycare experience.

I received the same off-putting response from the Young School administration. It leads me to wonder if they would also have the 'our way or the highway' attitude towards parents of enrolled children.

I was not given the impression that the school would be an open, comfortable or nurturing environment for a young child. If that is not the case, then the Young School administration should rethink their approach to prospective parents and their deteriorating image within the community,

The school also has frequent 'job fairs' advertised using banners on the street. Staff turnover must be a concern and they don't seem to target educators with these job postings....

I stumbled across these reviews and thought it would be helpful to hear from a parent who has actually had her child at The Young School for 4 years (since she was 10 weeks old). My daughter and I both absolutely love this place! I drop my daughter off everyday with the confidence that she will be loved, taught and get excellent care. She has blossomed into a wonderful and bright little person and I credit The Young School for their part in her development. In relation to your front office issue, I'm sorry to hear about your experiences but from their perspective, if they toured every family and person interested in the school through the facility they wouldn't be able to concentrate on running the school to make sure my child has quality care. It would be almost impossible so perhaps thats the reason for the shortness. I also personally like the fact that you can't tour my daughters school unless there is an open space - it makes me feel secure to know strangers aren't walking through all day long! Good luck in your search for the perfect school.

Glorified Baby Sitting Day Care, Administrator lacks professional and courtesy. She assumes too much without knowing how to speak with people in a professional manner. She is rude. By the time you go through all that in being frustrated, it is not worth leaving your child there.

My children do not attend the Young School so I cannot comment on the quality of care provided. However, they do not attend explicitly because of the poor customer service I received during my search process. Another reviewer questioned whether race was a factor. The answer is no--I am lily white and had the same experience. I am a licensed child psychologist and through my work have seen a range of quality in daycare centers, from poor to excellent. When it came time to find care for my child, I knew what to look for. The Young School refused my requests for a tour of the facility. Other centers may limit the times you may tour, but no other center has ever outright refused. Moreover, the staff wouldn't answer my questions about the curriculum, educational philosophy, how rooms were set up or teachers?? level of experience. What the staff was interested in was receiving my application fee-- which I declined to give them. Why would I send my children to a center when I don't know anything about the learning environment? But the Young School has a long waiting-list, so I guess the demand for child care in our community outweighs the need to treat prospect customers with respect and helpfulness.

This is just a review of my first impression of this school since I am on the waiting list and my son does not yet attend. This is my impression of the front office staff and not necessarily the curriculum, teachers, etc. But it made enough of an impression on me that not only have I reconsidered my desire to send my baby to this school but am also here writing this review to give others a warning. I've researched plenty of other daycare centers in this area and my son currently attends one so I am very familiar with the process and dealing with educators/directors. Generally, directors/owners are very amicable. Considering this is a business I would think a more friendly, caring attitude would be something you would want to present to a potential client, waiting list or not. Today, I decided that instead of doing my 6-month waiting list status check over the phone I wanted to do a walk in since I've never seen the inside of the school or personally met the staff. Well let's just say they didn't seem too happy to see me at all. As I waited for the receptionist to buzz me in (we??re looking right at each other), I already felt the apprehension to even let me in the door. I had just returned from a business trip, I am a mother and pretty conservative looking so I don't really think they were afraid to buzz me in for looking suspicious. So eventually I guess after mulling over the idea and realizing I wasn't about to just turn around and leave, they let me in. The head of school, sitting at her desk, was not very personable, non helpful, and just down right rude. Even though I was taken aback by her nasty attitude I proceeded to pretend I didn't notice her attempts to discourage me from asking questions and inquire about the school. I asked where my son was on the list and without looking at any record, list or computer was told not to "worry about it". I'm sorry, what exactly does that mean? "There's no chance in h*ll?" That's what I took that answer as. More than a number of times I just wanted some confirmation that my son's name was even on the list. After a few more excuses and reasons not to refer to the now non-existent list, I had no choice left but to accept the excuses and outright disrespect. Instead of just turning around and walking out the door in defeat or short of telling her where she could put her list, I kept calm, smiled, nodded my head as she told more lies and politely asked for her name and a brochure since it didn't appear she was going to offer either. Hurt by her attitude towards me and the fact that I had absolutely no assurances that my son may or may not be on a list that may or may not even exist; I shook her hand, gave my name and walked out. Many different reasons for her actions raced through my mind; race being first and foremost but also a possibility that there could be places on the waiting list being held for others who haven't spent as much time on it as I. But regardless of what her reasons were for discouraging me from ever coming back and guaranteeing the young school another monthly $1,000+ check (which they clearly don't need) their desire not to have me as a future client was heard loud and clear. Just beware!

My kids have been here for almost 3 years and they really enjoy it. The teachers are great especially my older son's primary teacher. I love the fact that my children are learning so much. The school is very well kept up. I think I only have two issues - one the high turnover of teachers and two the number of days closed. Neither of my 2 complaints is out of line with other similar programs but they are my little pet peeves.
