Phil repaired an Eastman Archtop of my that was damaged. Put in new frets, refurbished the guitar and it looks and plays better than new. Fantastic work. Just gave him my ES 335 for refurbishing. Definitely worth taking extra time to

Phil is one of the finest luthiers on the east coast. He has worked on all of my basses and has built 2 basses for me from parts. Phil's work is impeccable. His is a wonderful mix of old world craftmanship with modern technology. His use

I've been playing the guitar for more than 20 years and one of my bones of contention is the fact that good luthiers are hard to find. If you take your guitar to a large dealer you never know who will be working on it as they only read the repair ticket and act accordingly. You rarely get to speak with the luthier one on one. Not to mention that I've had some bad work performed on some of my very expensive guitars.

A friend of mine told me about Phil Jacoby. I decided to give him a call as I had a project guitar that needed extensive modifications. The first thing that impressed me about Phil was that he takes his clients by appointment only. When I arrived at Phil's shop I discovered that he had scheduled an hour of free time just for me as he wanted to get to know me and discuss little nuances about my playing style....Do I bend the strings a lot? Do I use the tremolo a lot? How do I like the action on my guitar? Am I satisfied with the tone? I couldn't believe that this guy was serious. He actually took the time for a largely unknown musician to get to know me and customize his mods and setup just for me. Phil also gave me advice on the parts I was using on the mods and actually put a bone nut on the guitar that he cut himself. Service is the biggest thing missing from the big dealers and some small ones to boot! I couldn't believe it! I have discovered the Holy Grail of Luthiers.

Needless to say his work is impeccable. That guitar singed like a bird and played like butter. I also discovered that Phil attends NAAM annually and other workshops to keep up on his trade. He has a PLEK machine and is a certified Buzz Feiten Tuning System retrofitter. All of my guitars have this system installed on them. Phil solved my problem because I could not find anyone locally qualified to retrofit my guitars with the Buzz system.

I have a guitar being modded at the moment and can't wait to pick it up. I looked for a Luthier and found a friend as well.

Pros: Great one on one service, great value and excellent workmanship.

Cons: Parking could be a problem on the weekends. Takes a little effort.
