I have to chime in on this -- I've been to 3 different vets with my 2 cats, one in connecticut and 2 in new york before moving to this area. I've been taking my cats here for about 6 months now.

Dr. Carey seems great (I note everyone here says she's the "good" vet) -- She gave me many suggestions for my cat that other vets hadn't bothered to bring up and was thorough and knowledgeable. I trust her judgment entirely because she noticed and explained several issues no other vet had mentioned before and seems genuinely concerned about the well being of the animals.

Why four stars? I have to echo some of the other people regarding disorganization/rushed feel on some things. They'll tell you that you'll get a call regarding the results of bloodwork, but my experience is that you have to call them yourself, sometimes multiple times, to get the results. To be fair, my vets in New York were exactly the same and I pretty much just expect to have to call myself anytime I get bloodwork done at a vet. I don't think I've EVER had a vet call me back with the results of bloodwork.

I've also had issues with getting prescriptions reliably there, that sort of thing, which again is fine because I just go directly to the pharmacist now for refills.

As for price -- All services I've received here were about the same or a little lower than my New York vets. It still hurts to get the bills, but I think they're typical for decent vet care.

Overall, I trust this vet's judgment, but there's definitely room for improvement in keeping things organized and running as smoothly as they should be at the clinic.

I've never reviewed a thing in my life, but I have to give thanks to Dr. Carey and her staff. I brought my 17 year old most faithful companion to be euthanized. Dr. Carey was extremely patient and kind, as was her staff. I will be going back and would definitely recommend this vet to my friends..

There are very few things in life I feel passionate enough about to put in print. In fact this is my first review. But I have had such an exceptional experience at Tacoma Park Animal Clinic; I want to get the word out. I don??t want anyone to go through what I went through.
I moved to Maryland 2 years ago, and I have had one horrible experience after another trying to find a vet. I found what I was missing here at Tacoma Park, I found people who love your animal the way you love your animal. People who treat what you came in for and don??t try to sell you the undercoating treatment.
Here in Dr. Hines I found my vet after a 2 year search. What a relief. I am driving further to get to this vet, but I am happy, and my dog is happy. It feels like an All State commercial, but I know we are in good hands at Tacoma Park.

Dr. Carey is the "good vet" at Takoma Park Animal Clinic. I had thought I could take my pets to her but I was not able to avoid the bad vet. Therefore after going there for 20 years for my dogs and cats I am finished. DO NOT TRUST them with your beloved pet. My dog who has heart problems went in for dental work. I had brought the exact instructions for the anesthesia from my dog's cardiologist. The bad vet ignored the instructions, putting my dog's life in peril. Earlier the bad vet almost killed my other dog with a completely wrong diagnosis. STAY AWAY

Sorry, Dr. Carey, but your receptionists are RUDE!
The receptionists are B*TC#ES.
My cat is DEAD, and you have not responded to my letter regarding Vetsulin.
SHAME ON YOU and your entire staff!!
Dr. Carey is a good vet, BUT .... everyone else there sucks!
My confidence in these people is shattered.
HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THE VETSULIN RECALL?

this vet is terrible. My cat ended up having an infection that was cured with antibiotics at another vet. Takoma park vet told me it was cancer and left this informaiton on my answering machine. On another occasion when My cat had a bite from another cat they told me she had a broken arm an showed me an x ray from another animal. Awful!!

We have just returned to our home from a terrible experience with this vet. We have been loyal clients for a long time, and have put up with the revolving door of barely competant front desk staff, until today. We were told over the phone no less than 3 times today that our cat was fine and that they were just waiting for the fluid they gave her to pass so they could do a urine sample. When we called the last time they said she was all set and was ready to come home. Imagine our shock when we arrived and waited 30 minutes to talk to the vet (typical, I've never had an appointment here that didn't start at least 30 minutes late) - and she came in and started talking about xrays and cancer! They never bothered to call to update us and worse every time I called they kept saying she was "fine". When I had to pay they tried to charge me a fee for something the vet earlier in the day said would be waived. When I told them this they said "that doctor has left for the day" - as though it is perfectly fine for them to tell you anything and then not abide by that later that same day! Truly unethical.

In short, avoid this vet.

I initially contacted the Takoma Park Animal Clinic to find out whether they make house calls for euthanasia (which they do--ask for Dr. Carey. She makes house calls for other reasons too), since my cat has a tumor.

Without me even having to ask, Dr. Carey suggested some treatment options (steroid pills) to improve the lifespan and quality of life for my sick kitty that my primary veterinarian had not mentioned. Dr. Carey also takes calls on her cell phone and will call you back later in the day to discuss any questions and concerns you might have. She is very friendly and helpful and seems concerned for the well-being of your pet.

The only drawback is that there seems to be some miscommunication with the staff sometimes, resulting in clerical errors. I often have to wait for a while to pick up medications that Dr. Carey called in prescriptions for, since they are not ready or the people at the desk "have no record of a prescription having been called in," and they end up having to call Dr. Carey to confirm. I am always able to get them in the end, though, and the prices for the medications seem reasonable. Definitely talk to Dr. Carey if you need advice about medications or treatment options for your pets.

PROS: Dr. Carey is very friendly and helpful and was able to suggest treatments for my cat that my primary veterinarian did not mention. Also, she makes house calls. Prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly. Veterinarians are knowledgeable and good at handling animals.

CONS: There is sometimes miscommunication between veterinarians and staff, resulting in medications not being available for pick-up when they are supposed to be or appointments scheduled at busy times/times when the vet isn't in. Service can feel a bit slow and disorganized at times.

I took my pet to this animal hospital. The personnel were very friendly and warm. The manager was a take charge person that addressed my needs when the girl at the front desk had not charged me correctly. The young girl took a long time to ring me out but was a nice young lady. The manager apologized for the mistake and offered to take care of me right away. She made me feel welcomed and they cared about me as a client. The Doctor was very interested in my pet and looked at him from head to foot. The place was not as clean as I wanted but the doctor and staff cared about me, my child and my pet. The doctor did meet my expectations and so do the manager. I would recommend them to my friends.

I am so angry right now, I took m dog in because she is scratching, I called and was told there was a cancellation, and was given the slot, after dog was seen, I was charged a 45.00 fee for walk in on top of a 58.00 exam fee. After waiting over an hour I left there not having any idea what is wrong with my baby, and 199.00 lighter. I feel fleeced. Also, the place is rarely clean a flea jumped on my baby when I put her down, the front desk staff need MAJOR work, they are neither courteous or friendly on the phone or in person. I have been there a few times but today was my last visit

I'm not one to spend time writing reviews - but my experience with this vet was so dissapointing and upsetting to me and my beloved dog - I couldn't let others go without a warning. From the moment we got there - the experience was terrible. We waited for 1/2 hour. The vet tech and vet never bothored to introduce themselves to me or my dog. They had her information wrong and didn't bother to ask any health questions. They didn't even pet the dog. They insisted she get on the table after I explained that would frighten her and she was only there for vaccine updates.. (she is large enough to vaccinate on the floor as other vets do). she was terrified on the table. I asked for a nail trim and when I came back in the room - there was blood all over the floor. WHen we went to check out - they wouldn't expedite me even though my dog (who is a very relaxed and well behaved animal) was beside herself - and I finally had to put her outside to pay - and waited 10 minutes for that transaction. The experience was so bad for my dog that we happened to walk by it the other day and she insisted on crossing the street - fearing we were going back. I regret I paid for the experience and would encourage anyone to AVOID THIS VET. I have since gone to friendship - where the premium you pay is worth EVERY Penny. Shame on Takoma park animal clinic

So many people speak well of this clinic, and I don't understand why. We had problem after problem with it. Starting with the minor problems: orders for prescription food were constantly delayed or lost, and when an order finally arrived, nobody called to let us know. It routinely took multiple phone calls, and once, a visit to the clinic, to get the results of bloodwork. The place was not clean. One of the permanent vets, I felt, was very good -- had an attentive and thoughtful approach and was knowledgeable. But the other always seemed rushed and more interested in talking and petting somebody's dog than examining my cat. This is not such a big deal with a young and healthy animal, but for one with chronic and serious conditions, it can be. So we tried just relying exclusively on the "good" vet, only to find ourselves dealing with substitute vets, then an intern. He was very nice, but when he handed me absolutely the wrong medication for my cat's condition -- thyroxine for a hyperthyroid cat -- I knew we were just about done with this clinic. The last straw was when my cat was in crisis, and the receptionist told me to bring her in immediately. When we got there, there was no vet on duty, and nobody knew when a vet would arrive. They should have informed me of that over the phone and referred me to another clinic or hospital. I could never recommend this place to anyone with a pet that needs ongoing, diligent and professional medical care.

Takoma Park Animal Clinic was the first clinic that made my pit-mix rescue dog feel at home. They bathed him with love, kisses and treats making his trip to the vet an enjoyable one! The staff at TPAC made my puppy WANT to go to the vet. Imagine that?!

When my dog had problems with his paws- Dr. K told it like it was- she educated me on the problem and even went on to say- "You can buy this really expensive stuff we sell- or you could just simply use this homemade remedy- it works just as well. Saving me Money!

I now live 50 miles away and I refuse to change vets. The staff at Takoma Park Animal Clinic are simply the best!

PROS: Friendly educated, caring, honest staff

When I lived in Maryland I was here on a regular basis with my pets. My pet is like a family member so I try to give them the best care in the world. I was extremely happy with the staff here. They are very caring and knowledgeable. The price here is a little steep but the quality of care is worth the price.

My family has been taking our dogs to the Takoma Park Animal Clinic for about 10 years now and I have always been satisfied with their services. They are compassionate as well as efficient. A little short staffed at the moment I believe, but they still put the customer first. I feel they have a genuine love for animals and their care.
