This place is a head factory. Stylists and colorists are very friendly but they rely on their friendliness and not their expertise. Receptionists and managers are not always professional nor friendly.

When scheduling the appt, I said I didn't want to go much over a certain amount (I had a living social coupon), but she scheduled me with a senior stylist, whose rates are at the high end of the scale and which meant I spent way more than the coupon. The person scheduling did not listen. Another person on Yelp made the same comment.

The stylist did a get job on my hair. So I went back 3 months later to have my roots touched up. She wanted to do highlights again. I have never done highlights that often and have always just had the roots touched up. I said I didn't want highlights. And she said fine and did the color. Turns out she used the same color as she did the first time I was there, so I ended up with a dark halo (as the second person I saw said). The second person also said that she would have simply used a lighter color so that it matched with the rest of my hair. As an expert senior stylist, the first woman should have known that the color wouldn't go with the rest of my hair. Or do I expect too much from a senior stylist?

I realized how unhappy I was about it. And called. The first person couldn't see me, so I saw someone else. I saw the woman who mentioned the "halo" and said she would have used a lighter color. Ended up having partial highlights. So I paid a lot more for something I was not entirely happy with.

And I had to make two trips, pay twice, tip everyone twice. The original person didn't even apologize when I told her I was unhappy. She just put it on me and said, "Well, you said you didn't want highlights." I've been having my hair colored for many years and never has anyone suggested highlights after just three months.

Neither of them gave more than a quick glance at the color after I was shampooed. Again at other salons, they at least take the time to look at the color even if they aren't drying or cutting your hair.

If you go here, you will spend a lot of money, meet friendly stylists, and perhaps be happy in the end. But you might not be and if you aren't, the salon nor the stylist will take responsibility for their work. I expect more from high end experts than I received.

On an end note, I called the salon, told them I wasn't going to be coming back and why. I received a very polite letter back telling me they didn't want me as a client anymore. Never been fired by a salon before.

This place is about moving heads in and out of chairs. Not much else.

Went there today for a partial foil with Vanessa..my hair looks great!! My hair was bleached out and dry..she added lowlights and it looks so much better. Vanessa was so sweet!!! I would highly recommend going to see her if your hair needs help like mine did!! Price was reasonable I thought..$125 for a partial..the blow dry was free b/c it was my first visit, but would normally cost $45..ouch. Left with coupons for my next visit.will definitely be back!

The price was very high and was not worth it. The coloring job was below par - little attention to detail. The cut was not good - the person, despite being a "specialist " for my type of hair, did not understand it and did not listen to what I wanted. Hair looks horrible - it's good that it grows.

My time seemed to be of little importance and more than once during my visit I had to wait for a significant amount of time.

I won't be returning.

I like Progressions and have been going there for maybe 8 years. The ambiance is great and Trinh does excellent, young and hip hair cuts that even work for someone my age. She's a little powerhouse and is constantly going to training programs, seminars and the like to keep up with the latest trends for color, cuts and treatments. I get the feeling the salon makes a point of having all the stylists do this so there's an emphasis on keeping up to date with the latest technologies and styles. For example, they were one of the first salons in the area to offer Brazilian Keratin treatments which have been wonderful for my crazy and unruly hair. Both my daughter and I go to Trin which says something since my daughter is still in college. A little pricey but we've both occasionally tried other salons when out of town (even name places in NYC), and I won't let anyone else cut my hair.

I also read the reviews in the Washingtonian and wanted to give Ira a try. I was extremely pleased with my haircut. I had super long hair and I wanted a change. I wasn't sure what I wanted, and I told Ira that I just wanted something new, somewhat trendy, but mostly a haircut that will grow in well (I didn't want to have to come in and get my haircut every 2-3 months) and that fits my face. I definitely got what I asked for. Its been almost a year since my haircut and it has grown in very well. Everyone, including myself, loves my hair! I get plenty of compliments still!!! Ira is worth the money!!!

Ira is definitely overrated. He talks a good game but doesn't deliver. He has his own agenda and is living in a time warp. My haircut was old fashioned, boring, as far away from a modern haircut as you can get. He lacks talent but he'll tell you otherwise because it's all about him. I've paid $125-$175 for haircuts in the past at my favorite salon in NYC (Bumble & Bumble) and never minded because my haircuts were impeccably awesome. Ira's $150 haircut is simply NOT WORTH IT.

I got my hair cut by Ira and after I showed him a picture - he assured me he would give me a slightly longer version than the style in the photo. Not only was it shorter - but not even a version of the hairstyle I had chosen. He took little time (and little accuracy) with his razor cut. Then when I went to pay the bill I was speechless..$150!! No I did not get color - just a haircut and a lousy one at that. One side is obviously longer than the other. Needless to say I'm going elsewhere to get it fixed next week.
I didn't even want to give a one star rating.

After putting off cutting my hair (for months) because of my lack of trust for stylists I went to Progressions to see Pam per my sister's recommendation. She has been going to Pam for years and her hair always looks fabulous so I decided to give her a try. My hair was long (one length) with bangs that had been growing out. I told Pam I wanted to keep the length but add some sort of layers to give my hair shape. I also expressed that I would love to not have to use the flat iron on my hair because I had been experiencing some breakage. Pam performed her majic and I left with lots of long layers and a nice bouncy (natural) flip to the ends of my hair. I commented I would never be able to duplicate it at home but with the help of the amazing cut and the Kerastase product line my hair feels and looks great and it naturally flips when I blow dry it due to the cut. I have never experienced a stylist as talented as Pam. The haircut was $84 and worth every penny. I would have paid $250 for the miracle Pam performed on my hair.

ira was perfect , he gently held my hand as he sensed my apprehension about having my world-class hair being cut by someone outside of hollywood . i will go back til the day i pass away, ( i hope he will even prepare me in casket) the price was moderate and was impressed by the staff (in a good way ) i look forward to doing buisness w/ them again, i've maintained this cut for 7 months with 1 trip to trim my bangs .

At my first appointment in March I got a mediocre cut and was not happy. A few days later the salon called me and asked how my hair was (as a courtesy!!!). I told them I was unhappy and they rescheduled me, at my convenience, with a new stylist - FOR FREE! She (Jennifer) re-cut my hair and did a WONDERFUL job. I recently went back to Jennifer and received another great haircut. She really listens and seems to know exactly what I want her to do with my hair. I think the higher prices are worth it considering the fantastic customer service I have received. They also trim bangs for free and have sent me a coupon. How can you go wrong if they will correct their cuts for free?!

I read a review on the Washingtonian magazine about Ira, the owner of Progressions. I was lazy and did not want to go to Georgetown, and I went there. Big mistake! It was for a short haircut, and Ira, besides the fact that he was totally in love with himself, did the worst haircut I have never had. Both sides were not symetric, and I had hair of every length. I had to wait 3 weeks before being able to do something, and this time went to Georgetown.
Incredibly overpriced ($ 300.00 for a haircut). Even if he were in NY, it would be expensive! And absolutely no talent, nothing. Maybe people believes him because he doesn't stop saying how incredible he is, I don't know. Or maybe he just doesn't know to cut short hair, but I will never go back there. I was so furious, I even e-mailed the Washingtonian magazine to ask them to go get a haircut there before recommending it!

I've been going to Ira since I read about him in the Washingtonian in 1998. I always walk out of the salon feeling like a million bucks and looking great! I have medium length curly hair, and Ira manages to stay innovative when I want something different and classic (like for my wedding) when the time is right. He is simply the best. Friends and family of mine go to others in the salon for both cuts and colors and always walk out with a great look.

Progressions came very highly recommended to me by a good friend of mine. I gave it a try and it is definitely worth checking out, however, you need to be aware that the prices are a bit high. If you are willing to pay for it though, the service really can't be beat. The staff is very courteous and offerred to get me an appointment right away. They really take care of you here. You get pampered. Well worth the price.

This is a great full-service professional salon - the best in the area! I have gotten my hair cut here numerous times and have been very happy with the results each time. The staff is courteous and helpful - I definitely trust their style opinions. Trendy interior and convenient parking. Prices are a little on the expensive side, but they are what you would expect from an upscale salon.

PROS: Talented staff, Convenient location
CONS: Price

I went to Progressions salon because they were highly recommended by friends. The staff who works there is wonderful. They make you feel very comfortable. Michelle, who works there, gave me a great layered cut and color. The color didn't come out exactly as I wanted but the technique used made it look great and professional looking. Highly recommended!
