Here's a story on Holy Frijolies:

One rainy Wed, I dined here wtih my your family (2 preschool-aged girls). We were seated promptly and walked by the HAPPY HOUR chalk-board listing $2 margaritas. One great thing about dining out with your kids is that you invariably catch happy hour!

We settled into the breezy bohemian ambience, enjoyed our margaritas and the girls snacked on complimentary chips and dip. The kids chose cheese quesadillas from the kids menu and we had a 'drunken' (smothered) steak burrito ($9.50) and chicken fajitas ($12).

The food was not very good quality. Nothing to commend the burrito and the chicken pieces on the fajita were a few huge chunks, not very refined or even tasty. The cooks were all 20s hipsters, so... If you are looking for better quality Tex-Mex I recommend Loco-Hombre in Rolland Park.

So the check comes out to $50 and I see that they charged us $12 for two margaritas and not the happy hour price ($4)! I ask the waitress and she says that "Happy hour is only at the bar". What?!? Have you ever been to a restaurant where happy hour was confined to the bar? I haven't and wasn't pleased. I paid the bill, left a 15% tip for mediocre service and, well okay, I over-reacted a bit and wrote:

"Happy hour @ bar only is Bullsh*t! Last time customer here."

Then we left.

And almost got down the street when this guy (who looks like an effete Jason Schwartzman) yells "Hey, are you too much of a pussy to say it to my face!"

What?! He turns out to be the manager of Holy Frijoli and -- after resisting the urge to deck him in front of my young family -- I told him my piece that it was not right to engage in happy hour discrimination! I kept thinking - this undignified hot-headed loser is the manager of the joint?? Figures...

I ended up yelling at him as he walked back down the street to the restaurant "Oh, and by the way, your restaurant sucks!!!" Agreed, not my finest moment, but I stood up.

Numerous Hampden bystanding residents agreed that happy hour should be for the whole restaurant! And maybe they won't be going back either.

I have been here a number of times--the food is good, but twice I've paid with my debit card and left a cash tip. Both of those times, the waiter tipped himself/herself on my card in addition to the cash that I left! The first time I spoke with the manager and was lead to believe it was a mix-up and they fixed the problem immediately and it would never happen again. Six months later--happened again. I can assure you it won't happen a third time because I will NEVER dine here again. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you are interested in being ripped off.

Cons: They're slow and dishonest

Love the nachos grande at this place, however you have to keep an eye on everything when you carryout, I ordered a (2) nachos grande with everything for myself and a group of co-workers at my job. When I got the Nachos back to the office and all divvied up we all realize there is no meat?? Called up to Holy Frijoles and spoke with the same guy Lesser who took the order, and he says just because I ordered grande doesn't mean the meat would come I tell him I asked for everything and I spoke with you when i ordered he doesn't take my name or anything just tells me to speak with the manager next time I come. The staff needs to lay off the mind altering substances!!!! I will go back and speak with either Nate or kristen then let you know how well they handle this dillema. My suggestion order all you want but eat in so if theres a problem you won't have to deal with the lack of ready response to issues.--------------------->

As promised I would follow up. I ordered carry out a week later and spoke with Abbie? after a little back and forth (manager stepped out and she needed to phone her regarding my mix up). They comped my two orders of nachos and they were loaded with all of the desired toppings, we ordered other items this day (chicken quesadilla, and how ironic nachos grande no meat - Lent) and everyone was thoroughly satisfied. So hat's off to Holy Frijoles for totally redeeming yourselves. Due to the excellent attention my office will enjoy the best Nachos deal in town. So don't hesitate to dine in or carry out of this spot, bur you gotta try the loaded nachos there's enough to feed 4 for under $10.00. The toppings are fresh and delicous some of the best salsa ever.

Pros: Great food cheap eats

I have been to this restaurant on several ocassions and have always enjoyed myself, but my last visit left a bad taste in my mouth and less money in my wallet. My office did take out and i put it on my charge card. I didn't tip the guy on my card but with cash. I checked ,my statement and foud that instead of the $40 there was a $50 dollar charge. Come to find that the waiter tiped himself $10 after we left and then processed my card. Called to let the manager know what type of people they had working there and she totally blew me off. Will never go there again. If you decide to eat there DO NOT PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD!!

Pros: None

Cons: They Stole from me

Great little Mexican restaurant with lots of great food. The bar area gets a little cramped, and the menu seems a little tired, but the fajitas are out of this world! The homemade chips and salsa you get when you're seated is worth the trip alone. Definitely the best salsa in Baltimore. One of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore and best places to drink a pint or two after a stressful day at work.

Pros: salsa, indie music, food

Cons: gets a little cramped, hipsters

.

It's neither the best nor the most authentic Mexican restaurant out there, but it's still quite good, and it seems to be one of those places that everyone can agree on. It's definitely a hipster joint; the clientele and staff are almost universally young and indie, with music and atmosphere to match. Even if, like me, you're a little too old for the vintage-Joy-Division-tee-shirt scene, it's a great place to get a couple of tacos and a couple of rum & Cokes. Vegetarians will have no problem getting a satisfying meal, and the house salsa that comes with the complimentary chips is rather good. I've been there many times, and I've never had any complaints about the staff. It does get a little crowded at times, especially around the bar.

After hearing friends constantly rave about this place, I decided I had to check it out myself. I can promise you that if you like an unusual crowd and delicious food, then this is a wonderful place to go to. I, myself, am not very traditional and that is what attracted me to this place most, from the moment that I walked in the door. I loved the food, I loved the crowd, and I loved everything about it. It is definitely a place that my friends and I will visit again.

Holy frijoles is a current hipster favorite--happy hour and beyond, you'll see many a tattooed, thrift-wearing 20something drinking Boh at the bar. The food here is good, humongous plates of southwestern basics like taco salad and burritos. I saw Baltimore's most famous resident, John Waters, at the bar here. Nobody bothered him--it's that kind of place.

Absolutely my favorite restaurant in Baltimore! Whenever out-of-town friends visit, this is the first place I take them. Inexpensive, large portions, delicious food, superb atmosphere, good music, friendly staff, food and drink menus feature both original and traditional Mexican favorites. Viva la Frijoles!

Holy Frijoles is one of the best places to go in Baltimore. Inexpensive, and now with the expansion, more space! The employees at Holy Frijoles are some of the best! The food is fantastic, and contrary to what the review says, It does serve drinks. A Margarita is a MUST HAVE, however there are many new drinks on the menu. Do not leave without trying the Mexican Ginger Beer or a Twisted Windmill and a Chimicanga! Great atmosphere, wonderful food, and drinks!!

Come on in, sit down and enjoy the newer, larger Holy Frijoles. The food was excellent, the service was good and the staff really made you feel at home. Groups of 3 or less can eat in the older half of the restaurant while larger groups can be seated in the newer half.

Don't feel guilty. Yes, that beef chimichanga was so hearty and delicious you'd have paid twice the price if someone had asked. Not even the zingy burrito packed with chorizo and splashed with house salsa or the bountiful enchilada stuffed…
