I've been shopping at the Book Alcove for over 20 years. It's so easy to walk in there looking for one book and come out with ten. Even in this age of internet deals, nothing beats walking into that store with a bit of time on your hands and losing yourself between the many shelves and the pages of another good read. Given the choice, I'd much rather shop here than at any big-name bookstore.

There is a little piece of my Heaven that will look just like Book Alcove. Such a great place. Miss talking with Gil about Kierkegaard....Thank you for making my book addiction affordable!

A beloved treasure is gone. I used to love to shop there, and then I worked there for awhile, too. a labor of love. Learned about a lot of great mystery writers there, a book or two on economics I enjoyed as well as a number of travelogues and poetry collections, and a bunch of other books I never would have have known about. I also loved the sometimes strange and often fascinating conversations struck up in the store. Everyone who worked there was a distinct, unique personality, and a good person to be around. I'll miss Book Alcove forever.

Well, this was the last great store in the DC area. It was going to be turned into a dance studio, but because Book Alcove and Wonder Book have a history, the latter decided to buy them out. Why don't you just pound another nail in my coffin? I mean, where else would I find a biography on the Stranglers autographed by all band members? For a couple of dollars?!

The DC area was once packed with many nice used book stores. When I was a kid, the Book Alcove was one of several that I would visit with my dad. As best as I can recall, back then it was the biggest. Today it's pretty much the only one. There are other stores that sell used books as part of their business, but Book Alcove is the only place in the area that a serious bookworm would want to visit.

As for the lady below's dubious experience, I find it strange that she could get cut off several times while asking one question. How long does it really take to ask one question? I find it hard to believe that this happened as stated. If it is indeed true, then I would characterize it as an anomaly.

In my own experience, the staff is nice. They tend to leave the customers alone as they browse, and are very helpful when asked.

I hope the Book Alcove is around for many more years. I, for one plan to help as much as I can by buying my books there whenever possible.

They just changed their procedure - $2 per box/bag for books. They are also being a bit more choosy in regard to what they are buying due to the economic situation (this is November/December 2008).

They won't purchase text books or computer books or "how to" books, but will purchase fiction, non-fiction, originals, etc.

Hope that this helps!

I was interested in taking my books that were just sitting collecting dust & had a few questions, such as what kind of books they take, how much commission they collect, ect. I called prior to bringing them in, just so I wouldn't be wasting my time or theirs if I lugged my book collection in. After the first question, the very rude woman (who cut me off several times) hung up before I could get another question out. If they were interested in their business, they would not treat prospective customers this way. I'm not taking my collector books there and no way am I shopping there!

Book Alcove is a used book store that has a stock that rivals most book stores today. The catch is that they have books that you can't find in other places like Borders or Barnes and Noble. They have magazines, comic books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, fiction, non-fiction, you name it. In addition to selling used books, they also buy books as well as allow trade-ins. Plenty of parking though it is a little difficult to find. Trade-in prices are not as good as I would like.

I am an avid reader and so I frequent used books stores fairly often. This one ranks up there on my list. The Book Alcove often has the hard to find books that I am looking for. I always go in this store to find some good cooking books, and I have never left disappointed. I would highly recommend this store to anyone who is interested in books. Also a good place to find used textbooks.

This is a great place to buy as well as sell. Let's face it-old books sometimes aren't worth much...but to move out a box of books you'll never look at and pick up a handfull more for hours of entertainment for you and your family (kids too) it's worth the trip in. Atmosphere is great, nice people too.

You can go sell your unwanted books, then head into the store - they have free cookies, and it's like being in someone's basement - low ceilings, lots of bookshelves. Very cozy! I love browsing the sci-fi paperbacks - they're half off the cover price, so old paperbacks are super cheap! I went last weekend and sold $17 worth of old books, then picked up a 50 cent paperback. I like the people that own the place, too.
