My stylist of 20 years (Tom at #6 rated Sima's in Canton) was out for a back surgery and I needed a cut and lighlight for a vacation a week away. I saw this salon on this website and it was referred by a neighbor as it is about 5 minutes from where we live. I was kind of curious about someone new as perhaps I was missing something great? Not.
When I called for the appointment, I was very specific about absolutely not using bleach on my hair as Tom had succesfully lightened and darkened my hair by using multiple colors and all foil for the past 20 years to avoid damage. After I was put on hold (which was my first red flag), I was assured that could be done.
To make a long story short, after we determined the color which did take a long time due to my inability to explain it (about 45 minutes) I was told that the way that colorist worked was to do all over color and then highlight afterward which by the way would cost a ludicrous $240! I explained that it could be all done with foil rather than double processing any hair. That way would take 1 1/2 hours was the response. Ok, so whats the problem, I was used to that for the sake of healthier hair?? An unwillingness to proceed that way was implied. Then almost as an afterthought, I was told that the only way to get any of my hair lighter was to use bleach! I know from experience this is not the case!! Resigned, in need, against my judgement, and even after the stylist said we were potentially not a good fit ... I stayed! My fault completely.
I ended up with a color close to what I wanted and a far less than precise haircut (understatement) for the low low price of irreversably damaged bleached strands and $240!! I will never stray from Tom at Sima's regardless of the circumstances. He is an excellent colorist that takes whatever time is necessary to achieve great results in a healthy precise way. Oh yeah, and it's 1/2 the price!!!

Pros: nice staff, perhaps it was just my experience with a particular personality

Cons: price, care for health of hair

Great cuts and the colorists are better than anyone I've tried closer. Everyone their is congenial and there are no "celebrity" attitudes. I always leave happy, relaxed and ready to drive back to Baltimore city.

My hair is stick straight and prone to show off "choppy" haircuts. I've now seen a few stylists at Dakota and none have left me with the "choppies"! My hair is perfectly blended and I can EVEN not blowdry my hair and it looks beautiful! They also were sooo respectful of my wishes in the "how much do you want to cut off today?" area. So many times I have asked for a tiny trim and ended up with an inch or two. I hate that! The color and highlights are great too! Really natural and helps to camoflauge the grey when it comes in! AND when I can't get an appt. with the stylist who normally colors it the alternate stylist will use the same formula! Everyone working there really focuses on the clients satisfaction not their own egos! Worth every penny knowing that I am the one who should be happy!

Pros: Great team attitude! No tension! Fun!

Cons: Very busy. But what can you say to that?

This is consistently one of the best Salon's I've frequented. The front desk staff is courteous (although often busy!) and the stylists are great. Seeing the owners so hands on is a nice touch. The decor is gorgeous and while not a "spa" you get a very relaxing energy and feel to the salon. They offer stylists who range from conservative to trendy and can accomodate so many different requests. This salon really is a great find and easy to get to off Rt. 100 just west of 95. Best in Columbia without a doubt. Probably one of the best in the Baltimore area too.

I've been to many hair salons, trying to find one can be hard especially when you don't know what you want, but no other salon has ever made me feel so comfortable and welcomed. everyone from the front dest to the shampoo assistants to my stylist, had the best customer service, my stylist took time with me looking through books and really explaining my options with my hair. I got more compliments on my hair then ever before, SO thank you Dakota! ill be seeing you again!

Over charge for service.. why? not because of the great stylist.. but probably because they have so many people working... didn't like the haircut. I'll be fair, i'll give average rating. But I really didn't think the hair cut was worth it... $30 men's haircut for mediocre scissor skill... will not pay again for poor skill again! It feels like Supercuts.

I was first referred to Dakota Salon by my sister and have been going there every 6-8 weeks for the last 3 years. I love the look of the salon - it's not intimidating or too stuffy. It's accessible and fun and quirky with a southwestern atmosphere. The staff there is always personable and quick to make you feel comfortale.

Here's the process:
1. Make an appointment - you'll be able to get in within a week or so depending on your stylist. Be sure to know what you'll need done and be specific - don't just say cut and color - specify foil highlights. The front desk person will probably ask - but it helps to offer as much information as possible when you're a new client.

2. They will call to remind you of your appointment!

3. Be on time to your appointment - they usually run right on schedule. You'll be greeted and there are always great magazines and cookies to munch while you wait.

4. You'll grab a smock with your stylist and do your consultation. Then you'll be prepped by an assistant - they usually also offer a drink.

5. The rest of the process is great and relaxing. You'll move from the chair to the dryer to the sink and then back to the chair.

Remember to bring money to tip the assistants and your stylist.

They also offer a range of spa services, but I've never used them.

I really like Dakota Salon and feel very comfortable there. They use top quality products and are all highly trained. It's worth the money every time.

PROS: Personable, Comfortable, Top Quality
CONS: None!

I think this salon is a find!!! After being butchered, over processed, and burned I turned to Dakota's to find a friendly staff, super talented staff, and over all great experience! I actually have been stopped on the street to ask where I get my hair done! If you have not gone to Dakota's then your hair probably does not look as good as it could!!
