My train-lover husband and I spent a whole day here. He saw engines up close and personal that he's only ever seen in magazines! He was like a kid again! We want to visit again!

My aunt and uncle love trains, and my main reason to visit was to find a gift in the gift shop for them. Upon arriving, though, I decided to see the museum out of curiosity. It was pretty impressive; I loved learning about the history of railroads dating back to the first one, the important role of the Underground Railroad, and how trains function. It was complete with actual railroads and caboose to climb aboard, which was neat, since I was never in one before. The gift shop didn't let me down, either; I found great souvenirs for my family!

After being closed for renovation for nearly two years, the finishing product is breathtaking - it gives you the chance to look at old fashioned railroads and sit in a real railroad car. Cards scattered throughout the museum give facts on different locomotives, steam engines, and the history of the railroad - the gift shop is quite nice, too. I really liked the presentation and atomosphere to this museum, and will definitely be returning.

The B&O Railroad Museum is several blocks from the Inner Harbor in a direction tourists rarely travel (with some justification - make sure you lock your car!). It has recently reopened after a couple years of closure following a roof cave-in from snow buildup. It's as diverting as ever - full-sized train cars that delight children, and both indoor and outdoor displays. Not expensive, but parking can be a problem.

The restored roundhouse makes a great home for a museum. Its spaciousness prevents the cramped feeling of many train museums that are housed in old depots. The collection includes a lot of rolling stock (train cars) outside for true train buffs to appreciate and some cars inside the roundhouse that people can climb up on for a closer look. The museum has terrific old clocks and some railroad china for people interested in objects related to train history that aren't trains.

It's not cheap, especially if you're taking a family, but it does provide a great history lesson for people of all ages.

Great building, lots of fun to see the old trains. Really enjoyed the exhibits and all the information. Worth the trip to come see (from Washington, DC).

PROS: Great old trains
CONS: Can't think of any.
