I have had good and not so good experiences with MEAC but my most recent was exceptionally good. March 2010 my dog had emergency surgery at her regular vet but needed night-time care so for a few nights she went to MEAC. We were told we could call anytime and I did call about 4:00 a.m. each night and spoke directly to a tech who gave me the latest updates on her condition. I was given a comprehensive report each morning to take back to my vet, including hourly updates on her medical condition, her alertness, her bed changes, etc. After a life threatening experience, a year later our dog is doing well (knock on wood!) thanks in part to MEAC.

We received very good service for our sick 16 wk puppy! After finding out the cost and unnecessary tests VCA Vet. Referral Associates in Gaithersburg wanted, we bolted here instead. Our little guy was lethargic, feverish and in some pain. We were desperate to see him get help and arrived @ 11pm during a snow storm. We were seen w/in 5-10 minutes and had our pet competently evaluated. He was given fluids and we were instructed that it was most likely an upper respiratory infection. It was a relief to know he did not need xrays that would have proved to be unnecessary. I will use MEAC anytime my pets have emergencies in the future and highly recommend their care.

Three stars-Good Vet experience, but unkind office staff.

I had the unfortunate experience of having to rush a cat up there in distress. My kitty was 9 years old, healthy, great appetite, etc. but had a stroke one evening. I didn't know what was wrong with her, she just began dragging her back legs. Of course I rushed her to MEAC.

The Vet techs took her back immediately. It didn't take long before the Vet came in with a diagnosis of saddle thrombus. Unfortunately, my girl was too far gone and needed to be put down. The Vet was very kind and explained everything to me.

However, the office staff was horrible. The Vet sedated my kitty and brought her to me to spend some time alone with. I had immediately told them that I wanted to hold my girl while she was put to sleep. After a few minutes with the cat, the receptionist came in, and took her out of my arms without a word, then started walking to the back. I thought maybe they were prepping her or something. However seconds later, another woman, a Tech I believe, came in with my cat in HER arms. Thankfully she caught the receptionist, who was taking my cat back to be euthanized without me! The Tech apologized and put her back in my arms, but I was floored by the receptionists lack of concern. She didn't even say a word to me when she took my cat away.

The grand finale was after my kitty passed, and I signed paperwork to have her held for a crematorium, I went up to pay. I asked where my carrier was, that I had brought my cat in with. She said I didn't have one. Round and round we went, before she finally went back into the room and found it. It was a horrible night to begin with, and then I had to deal with that.

Absolutely horrifying treatment and service. Do not go here if you care about your pet, drive to friendship or the BARNS or anywhere else, you will be better off. My cat was in emergent need of care and this was the closest place, UNFORTUNATELY! I suspected he was in big trouble, but needed confirmation and wanted him to go in as little pain as possible! They would not let me go back with my pet! They took my cat and never gave me an update or came to get me until they came to ask if I wanted him resuscitated!!!!! I asked why they did not come to get me and I was told by the vet on duty I brought him in too late. I never received an explanation or was even told what happened, when I asked why they did not come get me, she left the room! Worst Vet ever Amie Carrier, she is on staff Friday nights 3rd shift. Do not go. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The clinic has acknowledged steps were skipped, but still have no problem charging $272 for me to not be with my cat during his passing! They charge you $90 to walk in the door. DO NOT check any boxes other than the $90 assessment box, if you want them to have to come out and speak with you. Otherwise they will just rack up charges and not come to get you until your loved one is gone. Absolutely INHUMANE, unprofessional, and seriously taking advantage of those in need of emergent care. I wish I knew to avoid them! I cannot believe all the horrible experiences I have heard about this place now. Unbelievable. They need to be shut down when it comes to emergencies!

I read the review by the " past employee' AND was very similar to my experience.
I am not Spanish though . MY dog was brought. in by my wife and they did save me a lot of money on wasted treatment though. He was hit by a car at about 25 mph and died. The doctor seemed caring and professional. Only the doctor!
I hated the way the office personnel acted. lazy, uncaring when he died. Unbelievably terrible understanding of my wife's condition and state of mind. So much so that they treated her like a victim and until I arrived and she ran into my arms they appeared like I was going to have a violent confrontation not the concerned caring ..OMG our dog is dead "are you OK honey?" that is normal in our family. Most any family I am familiar with.
It was all so weird I don't know about the personal baggage of the employees nor care to. and brought it up to the doctor who worked with us. It has been a month and we have received no letter of apology or regret from that woman on the staff.
We paid to get our dogs remains cremated and returned to us.
They were going to call us in two (2) weeks.
It is almost one (1) month. I just called and they have had them for about 2 weeks and never gotten around to calling. I am on my way to pick them up.
After hours Vets are very important. This is only my horrible experience here.
I have been here with friends before and they were not so unhappy.

As an employee there at one time, I witnessed the most awful thing I could think of. Having worked in the best Veterinary hospitals in the area and having years of experience in emergency medicine, I was shocked by Meac's standards. They used drugs together that should not have been mixed, the staff was lazy, doctors were rude and did not seem to care about a pet's comfort versus saving money for the owner.
But what really topped it off was that a spanish-speaking couple brought in a daschund that had been hit by a car at 25 mph-which is enough to kill him. However he was still alive. I brought him immediately to the back and waited for the doctors to look at him and begin giving instructions. They didn't even move or go over to touch him. I said that we had persmission from the owners to do whatever we needed to do, but they just said "That dog's gonna die anyways, go tell them we tried everything we could and weren't able to save him" at which point the dog did die right after he said that.
It still brings tears to my eyes when I think about lying to a distrssed family that way and allowing something in so much pain to pass away alone, I just think they are terrible. I wouldn't bring my dog there if it was the last place on earth.

When you're in a bind because your regular vet is closed, it's a good thing that there is MEAC! They have the best care in the area for after hour services. Thanks to the staff there for helping to save all of the animals.

Their number is a good one to have near a phone if you have pets. They are the people that you hope you'll never need but happy to have if you need them.
