I was initially pleased. But as time moved on they became less and less communicative. Even as I was paying rent - they started "nickel and diming" me. You can email them and they will not respond - they do not honor any verbal agreements. So long as they get their money you will never hear from them. And never request repairs and expect a prompt response. I had a busted faucet in my bathroom the entire winter - and they only came sometime in the spring. Lastly, they have a guy there that always has to have a snide comment to make every time I call when trying to take care of business. I am looking for another place even as we speak.

I lived in a JR Owens apartment for 2 years. No complaints about the apartment, though I didn't really like the neighbors, but I suppose the landlord can't be blamed for that. Everything was fine until after I moved out. I fully expected to receive my entire security deposit back. I felt I left the place clean, or at least about as clean as I found it. JR Owens sent me a very exaggerated list of damages, with a very high list of costs. While I admit to a couple wine stains on the brand new carpet, they charged me nearly $300 for that. They also charged me $95 for damage to the front door that was there before I moved in. They charged me $120 for "cleaning the apartment", which was very vague and again a lot of money. Also they said I gave them back the keys a day later than I actually did, so they charged me extra rent for that day. All in all, they sent me a check for $260 from a $900 deposit. They could have gotten away with all this, because I didn't take pictures of the apartment and had no way of proving anything to the contrary, except they sent me my refund late (after 45 days of the move-out, which is a violation of our contract and the law). They also neglected to invite me to the move-out inspection, another violation. Also, when I went to deposit the check they did give me, the bank wouldn't take it because they had printed my roommate's name on the check along with mine and then crossed her name off. You can't just cross names off of checks. So, I couldn't get even get that money. Before I discovered the problem with the check, I sent them a letter complaining about everything else. A lady called me and just wanted to talk about the damage I did even though she said she hadn't seen it herself. She said the contractor said it was "filthy", food dripping everywhere... very exaggerated, fictitious even. When I asked why she sent my refund was late, she said she was sorry, it was an oversight. She didn't offer me any compensation, so I expect we'll end up in court. By the way, according to my research, if the landlord gives the tenant the deposit refund late, the landlord is not entitled to keep any of the money regardless of damages. I sent them another letter giving them one more chance to settle out of court; their response is pending. Anyway, regardless of their response, I am not recommending this business to anyone, as this experience has been extremely aggravating and insulting.

i was a tenant with j.r. owens corporation for a few years and rented a beautiful space in mt vernon, very classical style, with high ceilings, bay windows and a perfect location. i was super happy with their service, including maintenance and repair issues. overall a great experience and would highly recommend checking out their properties.

A buddy of mine recommended them to me as he had already rented a studio from them and was happy with the space and service. I was looking for a place in the Mt. Vernon area and I wanted to avoid some of the less than accomodating management companies in B'more. They showed me a few places in my price range and I have to say I was very pleased with their service and professionalism. I met the previous tenant when I was shown the apartment I eventually rented and she was sad to leave such a great space. When I moved in the place was clean and freshly painted. There was one small problem with the bedroom door. I requested that it be fixed - and it was done so with in two days. No rodent problems, no noisy neighbors, and no broken appliances. As with any area in B'more there are "issues". But you have to be very careful and do your research. This area rivals Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights in many ways. So far - so good.

The apartment was nice, which is why I chose it. But once we moved in, we encountered many many problems from doors falling off, mouse problems, noisy neighbors,.. many issues which could have been remedied by the company. But none of which were fixed or solved. I will never rent from them again. Ever.

We rented an apartment in a building owned by the J.R. Owens Corp. for about 2 years. The apartment was in good condition when we moved in, with new carpet and paint, except for the kitchen. The kitchen was in poor condition, and the home had mice. J.R. Owens did nothing about the mouse problem, other than offering to come and set traps at the apartment. They also were slow to respond to a problem with a leak in the roof of the apartment above us, which slowly leaked into our apartment. Our rent was very reasonable, and overall we liked the apartment, but we were unhappy at times with the service.
