We stopped here on the way home from St. Mary's College, and were very glad we did. Every other trip we'd made down there to take our daughter to and from school we'd stopped at the chain places along route 235, but this time we wanted to break out of that rut and try something authentic. They are just a couple of miles off the main road, in a little village on the river; there are two restaurants side by side. If you've noticed a place called "Jumping Jacks" in a converted old gas station along 235, that's where you turn.

Sandgates definitely benefited from an awesome early crab season; we ordered a dozen crabs (they brought 14) and they were full and sweet. But they can take full credit for everything else. They make their own crab spice; it was excellent. We also ordered the fried chicken platter and a broiled lobster tail; both were perfect. The sides & appetizers (broccoli cheese bites, side salad, fries, cole slaw) were a bit pedestrian, but they were fine and anyway that wasn't what we were there for. The draft beer was ice cold, and the coffee was fresh and tasty. The view over the river was an added bonus; we had a beautiful sunset (although not right over the water as the shore faces NNE) to greet us as we left. Honestly, this restaurant was great; the only reason I didn't give them five stars was because they could have used a bit more staff to keep up with the crowd; our waitress had a great attitude and worked hard but she couldn't be everywhere at once; still, it seemed that a whole bunch of customers all decided to come at the same time, which can be a challenge for any restaurant.

Recommended.

Sandgates is located right on the Patuxent river. You can arrive by car or boat to enjoy some seafood. If you like picking crabs with a few of the water you will enjoy Sandgates. Don't expect too much from the atmosphere, but the prices are reasonable.
