S and A is a super-tiny bead store in downtown Takoma. Although I love the more spacious Beadazzled in Dupont Circle, I also like coming here because the staff are relaxed and more likely to spend time helping beginners with their projects. Also, it's much easier to find parking here, than in Dupont Circle. A little further down Laurel from S&A are a couple of good vintage stores. If you're looking for cool fabric or buttons to complement your bead purchases I'd recommend stopping in at Takoma Underground and Polly Sue's.

This little shop in Old Town is a great stop for anyone interested in jewelry making. They have a large array of glass beads, wooden beads, a beads of all shapes and sizes. They also have all the materials that you will need to make earings, necklaces or other jewelry. In addition, the store has a good selection small knick-knacks that would work well as gifts. The store also sells some pre-made jewelry. The staff is helpful if you need assistance or have questions. However, while the store is cute it is really cramped. Going inside, it feels like if you turn you are going to knock over a tray of beads if you even consider turning in a different direction. Also, the prices are pretty high in comparison to craft stores around the area. I'd recommend going to a chain craft store to get the smaller, more generic beads, but stopping in here to find more elaborate, decorative pieces.

PROS: Good unique selection
CONS: Pricey products and a cramped store
