UPDATE: This store was finally remodeled to keep up with the new offices and shops that have sprung up around it. It is still a small store, but the caliber and quality of the stock has improved tremendously. There is even an organic section.

----------------------------------

There are only 3 supermarkets in Elkridge, spread out in various directions to the edges of a sizable zip code. Unfortunately for me, the Food Lion is the closest to my area.

I'm scratching my head as to why this store is listed as a "gourmet shop"... this is a smallish store with somewhat limited selection that was intended to serve the "low-rent" residents (self included, save your stamps/electrons) of nearby apartment complexes and trailer parks. (More upscale homes and offices have since sprung up in the area, but I have detected little change in the store in response to that.)

I do shop there occasionally due to the convenience and everyday low prices; but my purchases are limited to non-perishables, and occasionally fresh fruit/vegetables and meats. (They've been VERY careful about keeping fresh stock in the meat department since that TV investigative scandal... and it's easy to spot produce that is past its prime.) I REFUSE to buy refrigerated goods there. All too often, I have found EXPIRED and even VISIBLY MOLDY goods in the refrigerator case! Their lack of vigilance with refrigerated items makes me shy away from frozen items as well.

Many Food Lions are open 24 hours... but not this one! Well, maybe. Or maybe not! They change managers more often than some folks change socks, and each manager decides whether to be open all night or not. You can tell there's a new regime when the "hours" sign changes. That was a major annoyance when I worked 2nd shift... I'd try to slide by there on the way home, only to find the doors locked and the lights out! They could have been open the previous week, or even the previous NIGHT. Make up your minds, already!

Also, somebody must have told the architect that the site was in COLUMBIA, as it has a very Columbia-esque parking lot... i.e., you have to go 'round Robin Hood's Barn to get in! (Columbia parking lots are a bit of an inside joke. The intent was to make streets and parking areas more "attractive",

PROS: low prices
CONS: quality, service
