After this disappointing evening, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The short version is this...the wait was long, the service was poor, the food was very average, the sides left something to be desired, and the menu was overpriced!

The long version is this...we had high hopes for the evening and for the meal itself but were let down almost immediately. It began with an hour wait, being seated at 8pm for a 7pm reservation. During this time another group of people who arrived later than us were seated before us. We were told that it was because of the size of their party and that they were seated at a smaller table, although all of the tables appeared to be the same size to us.

When we finally were seated, our waitress seemed to be inexperienced and failed to ask us if we wanted any appetizers or to check back and refill our drinks. We had ordered sushi in the bar area and it came when we were seated. It wasn??t the worst sushi I ever had, but I've definitely had better. The dining area where we were seated was not bussed well enough and had food on the floor. There was a cold draft on one side of the table and a vent directly above our heads on another side that was filled with dust (a very unpleasant sight when eating).

In the meantime, the cook for another party who had been seated after us came to their table and began cooking their food. I questioned our waitress on this at about 8:30pm (a half hour after we had been seated) and she simply said she didn't know why. We had two children with us who at this point were growing tired and discontent.

Our cook finally arrived and did a good job with his 'presentation' and was entertaining while he cooked our food. The food was ok but we were unimpressed with the sides...too much dressing on all of the salads and the vegetable sides didn't include much. Our plates were made to look full with the addition of too many bean sprouts. Ultimately it was less than we expected for the price.

The lowlight of the evening and what sealed the deal on our poor experience was when I discussed our situation with the manager and asked for a discount on our $211 bill due to the unacceptable wait time. She actually had the nerve to tell me that the waitress must not have put our order in correctly and that we should take it out of her tip! I told her that regardless of how things had transpired, our dining experience had been tainted and I felt that we should be compensated for the poor service. We did not want to just withhold the waitress' tip because it was only partially her fault, and because the tip is split with the cook who did a good job. After the manager again suggested that we merely shouldn't tip our waitress, I told her that I wasn't satisfied and probably would not come back. She simply ignored the comment.

If anyone is looking for a nice evening of Japanese cuisine and entertainment, I strongly suggest Kobe Steakhouse at The Avenue in White Marsh. It is the same type of restaurant but with a managerial staff that clearly values their customers and provides outstanding food and service in a nice and well maintained environment. One thing is for sure, I urge you not to waste your money at Nichi Bei Kai. I??ll never make that mistake again!

Nichi Bei Kai is our default special occasion dinner location. The food is absolutely amazing - fresh sushi and a full hibachi menu prepared right in front of you. The chefs are expert and the presentation is as good as the flavor. Prices are a little on the high side but completely worth it. The house salad dressing is worth going for all by itself. My mouth is watering just writing about it - definitely consider Nichi Bei Kai for your next night out!

Sooooo good! Great food. Great entertainment with the hibatchi grill. Not intimate, you will be dining with 8 people at a hibatchi but that is what it is all about then. Truly recommended.
