Nightmare Before Christmas Cake - "meh"
by Hayden H.
Okay, I just compared the Nightmare Before Christmas cake to a movie still and I've gotta say, I too would have been disappointed. Not to say that they don't do great work otherwise (maybe they do, maybe they don't - I don't know) but being purely subjective, it looks to me like they kinda phoned that one in so to speak.
Maybe I'm not a great judge as I think spending $700 on a cake (wedding cakes may be an exception) is absolutely re-dick-u-lous and according to their website as of this date, the minimum for any cake is $1,000, so I would never be a customer of their's for that reason alone.
I'm probably going to get a lot of crazed fans bashing on me now (as I've read people who posted before me have done to the Nightmare Before Christmas birthday cake girl) taking these comments personally. If you're seriously considering doing so, take a chill pill before CCC has to take out a restraining order out on you. You may think you're defending their honour, but really, you just come off as creepy and kinda stalkerish.

Charm City Cakes is AWESOME!!!!
by Linda B.
I love these guys!! Their cakes bar none, are works of art and you can tell that they care about the customers and make all their wishes come true!! There are too many cakes to mention, but the globe cake they made for the public works dept was awesome!!!! The whole crew I would want to be good friends with as you can tell they enjoy what they do for a living and so many people work in jobs they hate and they hate their co-workers too and these guys compliment each other!!! I am a big fan of Food Network and my favorite chefs are Duff, Guy and Ina Garten and Gina and Pat Neely and I never miss their shows and what would be a big rush if I got to meet all of them and Duff makes me a cake!! I wish good things for Charm City, they will be in business for many years to come!!!

Charm City Cakes is worth the trip
by Beckie E.
Another comment...
As I was reading my review below I felt badly because it sounds so nasty and I didn't mean it to be at all. I think they were filming the day we were there and I do realize they are a working business. It was fun to get my kids' pictures in front of the building.I didn't expect to have an audience with anyone and it WAS exciting to sit across the street and watch the place. Just be sure to get good directions and plan to eat while you're there. You might get lucky and see one of the stars of CCC.

Charm City Cakes area is fun to visit.
by Beckie E.
Our family just returned from Baltimore and had lunch at The Diz, a fantastic bar/restaurant across from CCC where you can watch all the action, if there is any. We were lucky enough to catch Mary coming out and get a photo with her before she rushed back inside. The doors are locked except for appointments so don't expect much -- and the building is NOT easy to find. The staff at the restaurant, though, could not have been nicer to us and really seem to enjoy the attention that CCC brings. The food was excellent, too. I found it funny that the restaurant offers a wide assortment of cakes for dessert but they don't come from across the street! I'd have paid a lot of money to eat a CCC reject!!

Nightmare Before Christmas
by Lisa V.
As far as I can tell, the cake looks as close to the movie as you can get without hiring the original artists! Lady, whoever you are, you're a nut! Do you really realize that they are making this out of CAKE? Jack looks amazing and the hill in the graveyard is great! You were disappointed with the modeling chocolate and fondant, but what do you think enables them to create these masterpieces? Are you for real?! Really! Get over yourself and your totally trashed birthday! You are just dragging them through the mud so you can try to get something for free! I work in the customer service industry and there are more and more folks like you. Tell someone how deplorable their work is just to get something for free! People like you disgust me! Also, you were the one that was late. Do you expect them to drop their other customers, that were ON TIME, just to cater to you?! You are out of your mind! Go back in line and wait your turn! Keep up the GREAT work gang! Can't wait until your next episode! By the way, I LOVE the Bulldog cake in your interview segments! I have an English Bulldog and one day hope to get her one of those for her birthday! (She loves white cake!) Duff and Geof, you are awesome! Mary Alice, sorry you have to put up with all of the senseless mindless drivel from someone who evidently will never be happy with whatever you hand them!

THANKS
by Gaye F.
I would like to thank you for your program. It is so nice to watch a show that is fun, not hurried, and delightful. Thursday nights I know I get to watch a very talented group of artist create beautiful, interesting cake that go beyond imagination. I have taught over 200 people beginning cake decorating, and I know the most important thing you can to is to take a PICTURE of your creation, because in 30 seconds or less, it will be gone. When my ladies left class, they went home with a cake that looked like a basket of flowers. They learned to bake a cake, hide the secret errors, do borders, make roses, small flowers, do a basket weave, and not lick the tube while you are working!!! Thank the staff for their part, and please continue the light hearted way you create the show. Duff...please keep laughing....oh how we need that is these days.
God bless,
Gaye Fudge (no kidding)

Craziness
by Kandice M.
You all act like you think that your opinion matters. They make thousands of dollars doing what they do. Do you not think that since they have more than one season of the show that the people ordering the cakes have maybe seen it. Also you are just pretty much calling anyone that orders cakes from there stupid, with the cleanliness comment and what not. Seriously get a life watch the show don't watch the show, but in the end they will be making their money because they are good at what they do. And talk about Mary Alice and "boozing it up" gosh I hope that you don't let your children watch television at all....there is not a single show on television these days that is not inappropriate in some way or another. If you are not a good enough parent to teach your child right from wrong then I guess you would need a television show to blame when your child gets into trouble. Face it...it is your inadequacy as a parent.

Unsanitary? and Nighmare Before Christmas!
by Shawn B.
To you guys watching the show and talking about how unsanitary things are. Let me give you a little clue on what may be going on....it's called EDITING dipshit. Did you think the show was broadcast live? You know the health departments check on places like Charm City. If you are so worried, check with the health department for information, but remember...it's called EDITING.
Now for the bit#% who stole Christmas. C'mon lady that cake is brilliant just like ALL the cakes this place turns out. Maybe you are just blind in one eye, and can't see out of the other, or maybe mother nature paid you a visit on your birthday, whatever happened your judgement was way off. As for not all of the cake being edible, a lot of decorations on cakes are not edible. Would you eat the plastic piece of Bob the Builder off the cake from Wal-Mart, or the candles? Let's face it, you didn't take enough interest in your own cake to be involved, and then you want to gripe. By the way, why would YOU have to order and pick up your OWN cake on YOUR birthday. Hmmm. maybe you were the only one who cared it was your birthday. You poor pitiful lonely creature.
Order your cake from Wal-Mart next time....oh and don't eat the candles.

Super expensive?
by Ashley G.
First of all, I think Teri is being over-critical. I think that cake looks great! You're not going to have a perfect imitation of Jack when you're using fondant, seriously! I agree with the bakers who have posted, try it for yourself! If they had somewhere to be, being less than punctual can be harmful to their business. As a future bride, I know that I wouldn't want my wedding cake to arrive late, and you may have put them in jeopardy of doing such - think of it that way.Now that I've voiced my opinion (sorry, I don't like over-harsh people), I was hoping someone could provide some input as to how much their wedding cakes cost. I'm not getting married for 2 1/2 years, but I'd really love to get a cake from Charm City - they're so awesome at what they do! But I'll be fresh out of law school and so I have a limited budget, as well. Has anyone gone to Duff and the crew for their wedding cake? Not to prod, but what kind of a price am I looking at? Thanks!

Clean Charm City?
by Erica P.
While I have never tasted a charm city cake, watching the show has made me a little leery of ordering one.
The cake artists don't wear hair nets or hats, and I've seen hands with chipped nail polish working with the ingredients. It's just a little gross to see one of the artists while talking on the show, scratch their heads/run their hands through their hair, and then go back to rolling fondant with those same hands.
Am I the only one who is unnerved by this or is a little dandruff, skin or hair that special ingredient that makes the cakes taste so good?

Dear Teri S.,
Being a cake baker myself - just for a hobby - I'd like to ask you to make this cake yourself. Then you can talk. Period. You seem to be the type that is dissatisfied with everything. I'm sorry to be blunt but until you realize what long hard hours go into making a cake - you have no right to lash out at these fine people.

To Terri, speaking from experience
by Jenni V.
As someone who does what Charm City does, you have no idea how much time and love is put into each piece. If you didn't want an expensive cake that you had to drive for and if you've made better cake then perhaps you should have just had a simple homemade cake? Maybe you set yourself up for disappointment? Punctuality is a virtue. They had other appointments on a Saturday at noon. That's their rush hour. Take it as a life lesson and move on.

Our perfect wedding cake, over three years ago
by C H.
This was before the TV show hit, in their old location, but Charm City and everyone there from Mary Alice to Duff were fun, funny and downright refreshing to deal with when we had them make our wedding cake in Oct of 05.
The flavors were amazing, the design inspiration from Duff was a great addition to the ideas we had and little did we know that our wedding cake was being made by the future stars of Ace of Cakes. We DID know that they were off the wall, wacky and our kind of creative fun people.
I only wish Duff had stuck around for the party after the delivery. He would definitely have had a great time! We would even have had a mask for him.
It's obvious from the show that they've only improved since we dealt with them - they've added more talent, more experience and even more good humor. I wouldn't hesitate at all to call on Charm City again and in fact I plan to. Expect a call! :)

HOW can you complain?? ITS CAKE!
by Haley P.
That cake is BADASS, much like all the other cakes that charm city cakes creates. I am from vegas, only have seen the show, never had their cake, but I have a strong feeling that those who are disappointed with their cake and their whole *experience* haven't spent the time to appreciate what this business does and is about. THIS IS ART, it's not manufacturing perfection, but it's DARN close. Appreciate the TLC that goes into each of their creations and cheer up. After all, it's Cake. How bad can it really be?
Keep creating beautiful cakes and making loads of incredible memories for all these deserving people!

Teri's Lament
by Laurie H.
Dear Teri,I am so sorry that you were disappointed by your idea of what your cake should've been. That being said, I hope I can help you with your next birthday cake. If you have an idea of the "perfect cake" please make a picture and be sure it completely encompasses everything you want. Be in constant touch with the baker with whom you are dealing and make sure, that if you have any questions or concerns, that they are taken care of before you make plans to pick up your prized cake. A lot of the "disappointment" you felt, I am quite positive, came from your side for lack of communication. Also, regarding the "rudeness" you allegedly encountered when you arrived to pick up your cake, please BE ON TIME! This is a business and as such, they must also deal with more than one customer. There was someone else who was awaiting the arrival of their cake and why should that person have to wait on YOU?My sister-in-law, a graphic designer, makes the most amazing cakes and it is an incredible endeavor. The designs, the ideas, the work is an all encompassing project each and every time she gets an order. Please, Teri, understand that each cake, each piece is a work of imagination and creativity and if you are not of a mood in which you will leave the intrepretation of your cake to the baker, then completely and with pictures, communication and participation, be a part of the process. With this cake in this instance, I don't believe you were in any mood to like anything about this cake. I thought it looked pretty darned good.Take care, darling' and good luck!LaurieLaurie

Don't be fooled by the glitter and glamour of a tv show.
by Terri S.
Yes, the cakes you see on tv and the website are amazing, but for whatever reason, mine wasn't. I paid $700 for a small birthday cake, asked for a fairly simple design, waited months then drove 4 hours on my birthday to pick it up.. We were treated somewhat rudely when we arrived, because we were all of five minutes late and they were in a hurry to make a delivery..there was only one person there, on a Saturday at noon.
The cake was nothing like I'd imagined, seeing the show, and all the detail they put into everything that's on tv..I expected a masterpiece, like the ones on tv are. I asked for the scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Jack on the rolled up hill, and Sally and Zero on the bottom in the graveyard with the grave markers and jack o'lanterns..I got a flat square for the graveyard, with what was clearly simple lines made with a fork.. A mound in the middle that resembled a witches hat more than the hill.. and a yellow lollypop looking thing behind it, meant to represent the moon..The pumpkins were cute and the characters were close, but not accurate to the originals..
I was very disappointed with what I saw immediately, and upon further inspection there were cracks and bumps and a small dent that they hadn't bothered fixing before I arrived. After the obvious disappointment my friends assured me at least it would taste amazing..it had to for that money..
When I was talked into actually taking a bite..I took a pumpkin first, and I got confused, I was told everything was edible but I was practically gagging immediately, it tasted like play dough.. The entire graveyard and pumpkins and characters were made of the same thing, and it was awful.
We peeled away the fondant to get to the actual piece of cake that was only in the biggest part of the hill..and it was just simple cake.. I chose the white chocolate raspberry, and it wasn't bad.. But it wasn't anything special either.. I've made better myself.
Altogether, it was a horrible experience. I got ripped off completely, wasted 9 hours of my birthday in the car.. And my birthday was practically ruined because I had had my hopes up so high about the cake and wasted most of the day getting it.
Don't be fooled by the show. Don't buy from them. It isn't worth the money just because they can mold something out of clay.

Cakes that are sure to charm you!

The folks at Charm City Cakes, quite simply, make the most fantastical, original and whimsical cakes you'll find in this city - and many others. I've had the pleasure of dining on quite a few Charm City cakes. The cakes by no means taste bad, but they are comparable to many other cakes you can find throughout the city. I've tried the chocolate raspberry, the lemon pound cake, and the red velvet cake, and were very, very good. But what sets these cakes apart from others is not their taste, but rather the incredible designs that the bakers are able to pull off. Most any shape or size cake you want, they can create. Of course, such fine artistry does come with a fine price, and cakes start at $175.
PROS: Original, beautiful cakes, tailored to your needs!
CONS: Pricey!

Duff Goldman at Charm City Cakes does amazing work. We just went to a friend's wedding recently and just had to find out who made the cake. It was as beautiful as it was delicious. Duff takes his time while designing a unique cake for each couple. He can match the bride's gown and color scheme perfectly. I was surprised how good it tasted too. Definitely on my short list for my wedding cakes.
