We go back to this place whenever we can for two reasons: the mango tofu (strips of deep-fried tofu and mango slices cooked in a savory sauce and served in mango skins) and the roti kannai (we order the vegetarian version--it's completely unhealthy but it is a delicious occasional indulgence. That said, the service is ridiculous. In fact, the friend who introduced us to this place actually warned us ahead of time that, "these people will be SO mean to you." Expect brusque, disinterested waiters and a rather cold greeting, but do expect some delicious food.

If you are looking to get a good customer service and want yourself to be treated well, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID this restaurant. Though the food is ok but the customer service sucks big time. We were treated like dogs. Had to beg them for water, plates, cups etc., An when we complaint to the Manager of the restaurant, we got and answer saying "WE ARE BUSY - GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its was a freaking ridiculous experience. The Manager/Owner of the restaurant misbehaved big time!!!!!!! If urge you to AVOID this restaurant at ALL times. We want his restaurant to go DOWN and OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Title says it all. We've been there several times and the food almost always come up with much more oil than other Malaysian restaurants. Also, they're not especially known for treating the customers well. For example, one time when I ordered for pick-up service, they forgot to put one of my dishes in the bag (though charged). We called and they told us to come down and pick it up the next day. . . fine, we ordered a few other dishes the next day and wouldn't you know it. . .no discounts or apologies for our troubles. Have not been back since. . .

A much better Malaysian restaurant to try is Malaysian Kopitam, located down by Dupont Circle.

Its hard to pin down Malaysian food -during the same meal, the bread seems Indian, the appetizer, Indonesian, and the main course Thai. However, this mixture does not seem to detract from the uniqueness of Penang. The atmosphere is friendly and the prices moderate.

It has been a great place to take the grand kids for lunch and a great place to just have a quiet dinner with my husband. I just wish that they delivered.

Penang is an authentic malaysian restaurant catering food for all asians. Despite a malaysian restaurant, the food is almost similar to thai and indian. Especially the appetizer has no match. In india, the dish is called parata and it is the best. Lot of vegeterian varieties there. I love this place. It is ceap, parking is not a problem at all.

PROS: cheap, good food
CONS: nothing

Editorial from

Penang introduces Washingtonians to the real fire and flavor of Malaysia, plus samplings of Indonesian favorites and assorted Japanese sushi and sashimi dishes. That's reason enough to celebrate this restaurant, but even more, the service…
