Last time I was there, had hamburger sliders with chili toppings. Fist time and they were yummy. I love their fries. I think I have eaten more fish sandwiches than anything else. Second to that is their salads, mostly with the salmon

We were very glad to see a Hard Times in Frederick as we used to frequent the place in Columbia where we lived previously. The menu is simple, yet leaves options for everyone. The kids meals are a great bargain. We always take the kids with us and ask for a sampler. This is a free plate which highlights the four different chili types for you to sample before ordering your favorite. The chili frito pie is awesome! The restaurant is very laid back. Bar is in the middle with restaurant booths on one side and they pool tables on the other. Looks like they get a great following of pool players.

PROS: free chili sampler
CONS: smoke from bar and pool area does linger into restaurant area

Hard Times Cafe & Cue has the best chili in town, one of which is vegetarian. Their pool tables are decent -- 8 or 9 footers available. If you buy $8 worth of food (7 days a week, between 11 and 5), you can play pool for free. They have a widescreen tv in the front. If you just want to eat, you can sit on the restaurant side. If you want to shoot pool and eat at the same time, you can.

They don't retip their cues as often/well as they should, so if you play there often, you'll probably want to invest in your own cue.

PROS: Excellent chili; free pool w/$8 in food (11-5); good place for fundraiser.
CONS: cue-tip maintenance not up to par; can get very smoky.

When I moved to Maryland, I was sad that I couldn't get 5-Way Cincinnati-style chili....then I discovered Hard Times, and my cravings can now be abated successfully! Hooray!
