I am a long time customer of Kirchmayr chocolatier and I personally think they have the best chocolates I have experienced. You can purchase them by the box or you can pick out individual favorites.

My favorite is the Bitter Nougat. One of the reviews commented on a strong alcohol taste for the chocolates, I have not seen this except in the special foil wrapped chocolate that comes in the boxes of chocolates.

I find the chocolate itself, especially the dark chocolate, to be pleasantly intense in its chocolate flavor. The dark shaved chocolate that you can buy in a tin is excellent for mixing with a cup of coffee and ice cream to make a very special sort of hot chocolate.

I have always experienced excellent service at the counter, however sometimes there are many customers there so you have to be patient.

Note: They accept cash and checks but NOT credit cards. I have a small business and can appreciate the problems of accepting credit cards. Believe me the chocolates are worth the inconvenience!

They close at 5PM.

As you should expect, the Kirchmayr chocolate style is German. And in this case that means you should expect very heavy flavorings, and a heavy-handed approach to customers, as well.

Flavors are strong. In particular, strong with alcohol. If there's any excuse for your candy to have a liqueur, you will taste a lot of it. This is particularly pronounced in the chocolate covered cherries - again, no surprises here. But wow, you could light that candy on fire. If you like the burn of alcohol in your chocolate, you'll love the cherries. The marzipan is a stand-out in a good way. Strongly flavored, but the almond and chocolate flavors blend well. Their plain chocolates are simply unmentionable.

Overall, the Kirchmayr candies are well made, and while they are usually fresh, there have been times when their offerings begin to show obvious signs of sitting around. During high volume times such as major candy holidays (Valentines, Easter, Christmas, etc.) the surprisingly limited Kirchmayr selection becomes even more limited. Expect to wait in line for a pre-packaged assorted box. No choices at all. This is not exactly what you'd expect from a local handmade chocolate shop.

Overall, their product is good but it's just not impressive. There are at least two other, far better, handmade chocolate stores within a mile of Kirchmayr. Their level of service is also mediocre. Be sure to bring cash with you, they will not accept credit cards. And please do not try to talk to the counter staff - they always seem to be furious about something that just happened in the back, and somehow your purchase is making things worse. No soup for you!!

Pros: Marzipan. Chocolate covered cherries for the alcohol burn.

Cons: Excessive use of liqueur in everything. Limited selection. Cash only. Sour counter staff.

Kirchmayer makes the best chocolates! They are perfect. Beautiful to look at, smooth and creamy to eat, and you can find unusual and unexpected flavors. My favorite is the Earl Grey milk chocolate---very subtle tea flavor is delicious with milk chocolate. Their chocolate covered strawberries are to die for. Chocolates from this shop make VERY special gifts.

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful little confectioner hidden away in a business park in Lutherville. Kirchmayr Chocolatier is by far the best place for chocolates in Baltimore. Everything is handmade and tasted delicious. You should place a order for Christmas stocking fillers early as this is a very popular destination for chocolates.

I just love chocolate covered strawberries and these are the biggest and best I have ever found! They are expensive, but the perfect gift for anyone. Unfortunately Kirchmayr Chocolatier has limited hours and is not open late during the week, so call before you go to make sure they are open and not out of strawaberries.
