5Stars!!!! I took our three beagles to be groomed for the first time by Bone Jour, we moved back to Bethesda with the three dogs after 4 years away. I have never had our dogs groomed so well, down to their toenails and the hair carefully trimmed inbetween their paw pads. One of the dogs sheds profusely (all rescue) and somehow they groomed Prince so he does not shed as much. A boon for me trying to keep the pet hair to a minimum. The o wner and staff are always friendly, and 100% accommdating to our work schedule. Thanks much! Beth

I took my shih tzu to Bone Jour because I thought an upscale groomer would take terrific care of my dog. This was so not the case. I would have probably been better off at petsmart. When I picked my dog up this past Saturday after being at Bone Jour for over 7 hours, she was scratching profusely all night, into Sunday. On Sunday morning, I noticed a large swollen area on her neck, (hot spot); as the morning went on, the area began to puss. I immediately took her to the vet and was told she had an infection. To treat the area, they had to shave her, flush it out and give her an injection to help with the itching. Not only was this traumatic for my dog and myself, but I incurred a vet bill of $70.47, when I just paid $75 + $10 tip for grooming!

While my vet stated that the cause of the infection could have been anything from an insect bite to trauma, I am extremely disturbed that the groomer did not mention anything to me when I picked her up. After talking to my vet, it was clear that there is no way it was not visible to the groomer.

My was in Bone Jour's care from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and I am certain she was fine when I dropped her off Saturday morning. I would expect that when I leave my dog in a groomer's care, they would take notice of an abnormality such as this. Instead, when I picked her up, she had a bandana wrapped around her neck, and was told nothing. I have to say that I would never feel comfortable leaving my dog in their care again after this experience.

I must also mention that when I got home on Saturday after picking her up, she ran straight to her water bowl and guzzled water like she had been deprived for hours. This is very unlike her normal behavior, and again, I am disturbed by this. Clearly she was not given any water for the 7+ hours she was there.

I contacted Bone Jour Monday morning and spoke with the manager, Becky. She asked me to send her an email which I did and I also attached pics. and vet notes. Becky took 3 days to get back to me and when she did, instead of offering to reimburse me, she offers me her unsolicited advice on pet care and hot spots/allergies, and a free grooming!

Needless to say I will not take her up on this offer and will never return to Bone Jour or refer anyone there.

Business Response:

Dear Nagia, Sorry for my delay in responding. I needed to talk with Theresa who groomed Mimi first and got behind because of our "Mutts and Martini's " event for the Montgomery Co. Humane Society that we hosted on Tuesday evening. First of all, I'm very sorry that Mimi had this reaction. Having a pet react to the point of wounding herself is very alarming. I talked with Theresa, Mimi's groomer, and Kelly, our receptionist, about her stay here. Mimi's visit to Bone Jour was much the same as the last time she was here. She had the same shampoo, same groomer, etc. There was no evidence of any reaction at any point while she was here. We are vigilant in making customers aware about anything that transpires during grooming. Mimi's skin issue had not presented while she was here. We all have dogs. No one here wants to have someone's pet suffer needlessly. Besides that, it is just "bad business" to not apprise someone of a condition or accident as it will always bear out. This has been a horrible allergy season. We have been telling owners of white dogs in particular to consider antihistamines before and after grooming. West Highlands, Bichon Frise , Samoyeds and some others are very reactive from the start and are super reactive during grooming. It appears that Mimi had a reaction to something that caused what has been termed over the years to be a "hot spot". They can pop up literally overnight and do look ghastly. Like your Vet told you, the cause can be very individual and hard to pin point. I had a Corgi that I had to prophylactically put on antihistamines spring and fall. If I didn't, without fail, she would scratch until there was giant wound on her hip area or neck. They most always are in those areas because those are the areas that they can reach. Licking and biting feet can be common when dogs are allergic. I know that you are upset and that you want to advocate on Mimi's behalf. We do not feel that there was any part in Mimi's grooming where were negligent. We are sorry that she had a reaction shortly after being at Bone Jour. As a gesture of kindness to you and Mimi as new customers, we would like to offer you a free grooming here. You could talk with your Vet about possible preventatives for "hot spots" before doing so. I would urge you to do this regardless. Again, we are very sorry that Mimi was so uncomfortable. We hope to see you again. Sincerely, Becky Pugh

I usually don't write reviews, but just picked up my little shelter rescue dog Jason from Bone Jour and he looks great. They had to totally shave him because he was so matted - I know he feels so much better. And what is even better, since he was a rescue/abuse case, they gave me half off! Can't wait to go back!

I have used Bone Jour for the past 8 years and have been very, very pleased with the service I have received. My cock-a-poo hates to be groomed but seems very comfortable at Bone Jour. She always looks fabulous when I pick her up. I appreciate the excellent service I receive and would highly recommend them (and have) to anyone looking for a great groomer.

There is no way that I could have been any happier with my experience at Bone Jour! We brought our 3 Schnauzers in for a grooming and not only have they never looked better they were calm and happy when I picked them up when they normally hate the groomers so much that they are "traumatized" for days afterwards (they are such drama kings!). I will continue to use Bone Jour in the future and look forward to sending them as much business as I can!

Bone Jour is the BEST! I originally was referred to Bone Jour by our vet (Friendship Hospital for Animals in DC) and I have been taking my Maltipoo there for over 6 years (since she was 2 months old) and they have consistently groomed her beautifully. The people at Bone Jour are nice, caring, knowledgeable about dogs/breeds, and extremely contentious and talented at what they do. They treat the animals wonderfully, and I've recommended them to everyone I know with a dog in this area. I would not take my dog anywhere else but Bone Jour!

DISASATER!! My 10 month labradoodle is still shaking. I understood they had to shave her because her hair was very long and matted. What I didn't know was that they would shave the inside of her ear. Had I known that, I could have an opportunity to inquire about the possible side effects. She couldn't stop shaking her head when I picked her up. When asked if she was ok, they showed no signs of concern or remorse. They simply stated that I should take her to a vet in case she may have a hematoma in her ear. Very apathetic. The fact that my 3 kids were with me only made things worse; they couldn't stop crying. The groomer only made matters worse by expressing her annoyance with me that I'd never groomed her before. $116 groom + $200 emergency medical bill. I'll never go back and would never recommend Bonjour - what a disappointed!!!!

Business Response:

When dogs are matted - we have no choice but to shave them down. Being matted is a horrible way for a dog to exist and is totally avoidable by brushing and combing. Extensive de-matting is awful for a dog. Even clipping a matted coat down is a hard , tedious task. With extensively matted coats - we have customers sign waivers as we have no idea what might be under all the matting - abscesses, fungus, etc. Labradoodles are a mix of Lab and Poodle. Poodles have hair that can grow in the ear and in some cases, obstruct the ear and cause infection. With basic care at home or with regular grooming, the ear hair can be managed. But, when the ears are blocked and hair is taken out after an extended time of being blocked, the ear has airflow that it isn't used to having. Usually, there is no reaction. Sometimes there is and dogs shake their heads. If they continue to shake their heads, the blood flow at the bottom edges of the ear has no time to recirculate and remains there. If shaking isn't stopped, a hematoma can form. In this case, I was there and did tell this client about the possibility. I don't feel that my delivery of this information was insensitive or caustic. Of course, we don't like to have anyone have this outcome after coming to us with their dog. All we can do is do the best we can with the situation that we are presented with and hope that the dog has better care in the future.

I have a new rescue dog, a Bison-Poodle mix that had been neglected for the past year. Never had a bath or been brushed, much less groomed. Your shop was recommended to me by my vet, Diane Ferris.

I explained to Joanne how skittish he was and she put me at ease, explaining how everything would be handled and how the groomer would make sure he stayed calm and that the groomer would take as much time as needed to get him shaved, give him a bath, trim his nails and clean out his ears.

When I came to pick him up he was just as calm as could be and the groomer came out and told me he was fine throughout the process. I thanked the groomer and I was so relieved he was okay I can't remember her name but Joanne can tell you.

I tried to call you last evening to "register a compliment" but was informed you were not at the shop but I could reach you via email. Seems most people only call to complain but the great service I received and the compassion and caring my dog received from your staff yesterday was "above and beyond" and needs to be acknowledged.

We have been sending our cocker spaniel dog to Bone Jour for a year now and could not be happier! Her regular groomer, Sam, does a wonderful job on our dog. Her work is thorough and well done. Our dog tends to be a bit anxious, but Sam has a way with dogs and our dog really takes to her. It's always nice to get our dog back after a grooming looking so good. The rates are reasonable and the service is super. You can tell that they really care about the animals and take time to do things right. 5 stars!

I can not express how disappointed I am in Bone Jour. I asked for a "puppy cut" and when I picked up my dog I hardly recognized him. His ears were SHAVED and the cut was awful beyond words. The cut was not blended and he looks pathetic! He has always been happy to go to get groomed, however, on my second visit there, he seemed very reluctant to enter-even shaking.
I do not recommend Bone Jour at all. I will NEVER return.

Definitely NOT worth the money! The place seems rather dirty and the woman behind the counter has been mean to my dog. They cute my 5lb dog on two separate occasions and has since made her utterly fearful of groomers. We switched to a Petco in Rockville with the head groomer and have been much happier - as is my dog. Poorly run business.

I have been taking my dog to Bone Jour for ten years now and have never been disappointed. The grooming job is excellent, and better than that- my dog seems to be excited to enter the store, so she must have a positive experience! I know the people who work at the front desk to the groomers care for my dog as if she were their own. I will continue to HIGHLY recommend Bone Jour!

I have taken my dog max to Bone Jour for five years and have never had a problem. The people are great, I'm on a first name basis with Joanne (the manager) and she is wonderfully helpful. Even when Max's fur is in poor condition (and has to be cut short) he come out looking great. His groomer, Theresa does an amazing job with all dogs I've seen come out.

I have read some of the bad reviews and I think these people are nit picking. Truth is, they're taking a DOG to get groomed. Dogs don't do what they're told and there are a lot of bad dogs out there, lacking any type of training from most of these Bethesda housewives.

This place is more style over substance. It bills itself as a "pet spa" but I found the quality of the work they did to be sub-standard and lazy -- they just didn't do some of the things that were supposed to be included. They apologized when I called them and asked why it wasn't done and offered to have me bring him back, but I would have much preferred for them to have done it right the first time. I also didn't like that my dog was not given the opportunity to go to the bathroom for the entire time he was there.

I will not bring my dog back to this place and will likely just go to Petsmart from now on.

despite what a previous reviewer said, I was very unhappy with the way our cocker spaniels looked leaving Bone Jour after their first (and last) vist. Bone Jour shaved them bald, even though I was assured when I dropped them off that their hair would be kept long.
I completely understand that knotted hair is impossible to groom, but where Bone Jour falls way short is in customer service. Surprising a customer at the end of the day is lesson in how NOT to treat a customer.

We recently moved to Bethesda from NYC and our main concern was finding all the proper care for our Cocker Spaniel. We had our amazing groomer in Park Slope Brooklyn, and needed someone comparable to them. We found it at Bone Jour. Their groomer is excellent. They always get any mats out of his longer fur and he looks wonderful and seems like he had a great time. They say it's expensive, but it??s cheaper than we were used to paying in NYC. It??s a great place and I would HIGHLY recommend it!

Bone Jour is a great place to have your pets groomed. They handle all sorts of dogs. Although the service is great, I believe that their prices are somewhat on the high side. I would rather take my dog to another groomer on a normal basis, and every once in a while treat my dog to Bone Jour.
