I called this zoo about their awful, inhumane conditions. The woman answered and yelled at me, hung up on me twice, and said "I hope you never have children." I'm not kidding. She was as horrendous as the conditions the animals live in! No surprise there. They need to retired all their animals to reputable sanctuaries. I was appalled to learn of the conditions endured by these animalsincluding a bear without water/adequate shelter, confined to a tiny concrete slab surrounded by her own poop.

It's obvious that Deer Haven Mini Zoo cannot meet the animals' needs and that they deserve to live in a true sanctuary.

I took residents from a nursing home to the zoo and I will never go back. It was not handicap accessible and the paths they did have was over run with twigs and rocks. The grass was ankle deep. The cages were dirty and small and the animals looked underfed. I understand that the owners are somewhat older but if the zoo is too much for them to keep up then they should sell it or get volunteers to help maintain it.

We visit the zoo often, with our 8 grandchildren ranging from 3 years up to 14 years old, The 2 people who own the zoo have their hearts in tje right place, but I think their health is becomming a factor in the un healthy living environment for these animals. the poor donkey and Jacob sheep were drinking water that had algea growing on the bottom of the bucket. the poor Jacob sheep need to be sheared in the worst way, my heart broke for them as their fur was so thick that they had weeds growing in their fur.. The bear and lion living space is appalling. the woman who owns these animals is getting up there in years, and, it is too much for her to do herself, The animals deserve better treatment, We have offered to volunteer our services, but were turned down/ My heart goes out to the animals and the owners, because they really do love the animals, it's just to big a task anymore.

You know I have read a lot of the negative reviews that people are writing and I have really nothing bad to say. Yes the zoo is small but come on they never advertised it as The National Zoo or anything. I think they use the small space that they have very well. Yes they do take in injured animals that would probably not survive in the wild and if there was no one to take them in like they do. As for animals biting children where are the parents? I would not let my 3 yr old child go around these animals without my supervision and I certainly would not allow them to throw things at animals (especially lions and bears) and the parents of the children who do this should be ashamed that they did not teach their childen a little better as to not do these things. Also if you are so angry about the conditions and the cages being so small then maybe instead of complaining you should act on this and donate them some money since that is what they rely on to house and feed all of these animals. The owners of this mini zoo are very caring people, who care about the animals and their well being. They do the best that they can with what they have and what people donate to them. The animals are not skinny and they do not look as if they are neglected in any way. This mini zoo is a great little spot to take kids and anyone else who likes the hands on experience and likes to be able to pet animals that they may not have regular access to. I would definitely recommend this mini zoo to every one that I know.

My children and I stumbled upon this "zoo" if that's what you want to caall it and expected to see animals, not a hovel with some animals in it. The poor lion RAN whe she saw us coming. The emu's can get their head and neck through the gate where they are kept and obviously these animals aren't fed on a regular basis because they are skinny! The poor peacocks were all shoved into a tiny cage with a pine tree in the middle and there was a deer with horns hanging off of its head. I'm making an effort to get this place shut down immediately. Oh...and if you "run" a "zoo", you should be around to see if people visit or not. I saw NO management, and when I looked in the office window, I saw the poor iguana in a dirty, filthy cage.

My daughter enjoyed th fallow deer and seeing the miniture horse. That is the only positive thing I can say. The cages were so small. I was horrified at the condition that the bears and lion were kept in. The owner said that they bought most of the animals, but wouldn't reveal how or where. And being neighbors with an iguana rescue mission, I was HORRIFIED at the conditons she kept an iguana in the office in. It is NOVEMBER!! She had it in a ferrett cage in an open air office. And it suffered extreme skin mites and it looked like its rear right leg was so infected that it would fall off. I really hope the frederick county humane society interveins, and relocates the larger animals to a real zoo with roaming space. I am looking into how to file a complaint as we speak.

I will never go back to this place. My daughter did have fun but she is only 3 and doesn't understand how horrible the animals conditions were. The fencing was very bad, my daughter was bit by an emu that was able to stick it's long neck all the way through the fence. The biggest outrage though is the lion and bears. They have a lion in a small (and I mean very very small) cement cages. The bears as well are in a very small cement cage, this one is smaller then the lions but there are 2 of them. They also have a bird there that is either sick or just so bored that it had plucked most of his feathers out and is still on display for the world to see. Some of the animals look pretty bad one having most of the hair rubbed off is back end, most likely from being itchy. It had recently rained so the bear cage was full of mud and water, that had no chose but to lay in it. (that can't be healthy). I will never go back to this place whether my daughter had fun or not. THIS PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN AND THE OWNER THROWN IN JAIL, THEY NEED TO KNOW WHAT LIFE IS LIKE FOR THEIR ANIMALS.

My family visited the zoo this month and we really enjoyed it. The animals are very friendly and you get to be up close to pet them. My son, who is 8 months old really enjoyed the turkey! The zoo is a little small but I give the owners a lot of credit taking care of all these animals. It's not cheep to feed all these animals but friends and neighbors come and help out. I would really recommend this place.

My children enjoyed visiting the Deer Haven Mini Zoo since they got to touch and feed a lot of the animals. As an adult though, I was upset with the condition the animals were in. The cages are way too small! But if you want a cheap quick trip to a zoo, this is the zoo for you.

My family and I have visited the Zoo many times. My children can't wait to get there so they can feed the animals. The zoo is very hands on. As far as the animals and their conditions.... some of their spaces are quite small and the areas can get quite muddy if we receive alot of rain or snow. Alot of the animals were injured animals that could not have survived in the wild and now have a quiet place to live out their lives with others of their species.

Yes.....the zoo could use a little tweaking, but they do their best with what they have.

This is definetly a "mini" zoo. Everything is small. All the animals are either in small cages or with a bunch of other animals. It is quite sad. Prices are very cheap though. I believe for an adult to get in it $4.50. Dont plan to spend a lot of time at this zoo, even if you are a slow walker it wont take long to walk through. Strollers and wheelchairs aren't a good idea either because it is all grass or dirt and a pain to push through.
Management isn't that great either. While we were there, kids were harassing the lion and stressing it out, and no one stopped them, even though the drove by. Also, the lion and bears are in cement cages with pretty much nothing else.

PROS: cheap
CONS: Animals in small cages. Very sad.
