Took my elderly rabbit to him today. I didn't realize my rabbit was dying. He was VERY caring, explained the illness to me, and gave me several choices of what i might be able to do. He gave me plenty of time to think about it, ask questions and did not rush me. His staff was very supportive too, considering they didn't even know me since this was my first time here. I made the decision to euthanize after calling my husband and I feel very good that I made the right decision because the doctor gave me the facts, and very good advice. I would definitely recommend this vet.

The staff here can seem somewhat unfriendly but they really are very nice and caring people. They are no nonsense in their approach. I can see where this might put you off but they are not there for your enjoyment but for the health and welfare of your dearly loved pet. They are extremely busy and there have been many times that I've had to wait but the care they give to each pet is worth it. I've never felt that the doctor was in a hurry to leave my room to get into the next. (so they stay on schedule) They work in their own time but I have found that they give you their full attention when they are with you. I don't get into a regular doctor's visit for myself exactly on time so I certainly don't expect it when I go to the vet. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Bowles are excellent doctors. They both see our pets. I fully trust all of my pets (4 dogs, 9 birds and a cat) in their very capable hands. Having so many pets, we have had our share of "emergencies." With that being said, I've always been taken in immediately with excellent care, compassion and sensitivity. On occaision, we've had to be referred out and never have we had a problem with the next doctor not getting records or information from FST. I've been going to them for years and would highly recommend them. Just bring your patience. Sometimes they do have emergencies and regular visits WILL wait. I've waited thru several emergencies over the years, knowing full well how important it is and having compassion for what the other person and their pet may be going thru! I'm sure if you and your pet were the emergency, you would greatly appreciate it as well. NOT ONLY do they take care of their own patients but they also take care of abused, neglected and abandoned animals (domestic and wildlife) at any given time during the day. They have people walk in that just want to surrender their animals. AND Dr. Ryan was recently involved in the case where all those animals were found abandoned, many were dead, in that townhouse in Columbia. He performed autopies on some of the animals and testified at the trial! Everyone has their own experiences but this practice is far from being incompetent.

I have been using Dr. Ryan for 15 years or more. He is an outstanding an compassionate veterinarian. I would not trust any other vet with my pets. Recently tumors were found in my 13 year old dog's kidneys. Another vet suggested euthanasia within a week of finding out. Dr. Ryan didn't not suggest euthanasia for my dog. With medication she is doing wonderfully, and being monitored by Dr. Ryan. He did not put a time frame on my dog's life. Thanks to Dr. Ryan I have had an extra month with my beloved dog. I am not sure when her time will come, but I know she is receiving the best of care.

Please think twice before leaving a beloved pet there. I took my parakeet in to have a bandage taken off a sore spot on its leg. They suggested that I leave him there so that they could be sure that it was healing. In less than 36 hours my trusted friend was dead of a "heart attack". Apparently the stress of being there was overwhelming. I will always regret not taking him home and caring for him myself. He trusted me to do what was best for him and I let him down.

The care given to my birds and dogs has been excellent. Dr. Ryan takes the time to fully examine the animals and explains things to you so you understand completely what is going on. He even called at night to see how they are doing. If I have to wait I don't mind because I know he is giving someone else's pet the same level of care he gave to mine.

I greatly appreciate both doctors and the time they take with each of their patients. This is no doubt what causes the office to get so backed up. I am more than willing to wait because I appreciate all their willingness to discuss the animals health and expert knowledge. They have treated my 10 year old rabbits, hedgehog, and hamster-all successfully, over the years. I would never hesitate to take any exotic pet to either of these doctor's.
If you make an effort to chat with the office staff you will be rewarded with pleasantries as well. They are all caring people who are devoted to animal care.

The comment regarding the boarding incident with the birds-many animals become distraught while boarding-don't blame it on the care they received. Could they have given the birds their toys-sure, but a mistake was made-people are only human. In house pet services are a much better option than boarding.

After I had concerns regarding my Sun Conure's health, I researched local avian vets online and found Feathers, Scales and Tails and Dr. Ryan. I called and made an appt.

I arrived in the office 15 minutes early because I knew being a new patient, I would have some paperwork to fill out.

I kid you not, they made me wait over 1 hour before seeing my bird! And no apology from the staff...like it was totally normal for them to see patients and hour past their scheduled appt.

Then, I was finally called in to an exam room. Waited another 15 mins, then Dr. Ryan finally graced me with his presence. But NOOOOO, before he even took the time to exam my bird, he actually put a CD in the television for me to watch about feather picking and how to prevent it, and he left the room. I actually had to call him back in!

And now for the WORST part. When Dr. Ryan and this horrible excuse for a vet assistant decided it was finally time to examine my bird, I have never been so upset. They basically let my bird out of the carrier and let him fly all over the room, fell on the floor and the horrible vet assistant actually turned out the lights of the room to blind my bird so she could catch him.

At the end of the visit, again, no apologies for their lateness, and no follow-up call whatsoever.

I was absolutely horrified with the treatment of both me and my bird at this facility!

Do not go here...do yourself a favor and do more research of other avian vets...this place is a complete JOKE!!!

I appreciate everyone at Feathers Scales & Tails. The office is always busy-probably because they are so great! I've taken injured wildlife there and I am always amazed at the care they receive. My bunny was a patient there as well, and she was always well taken care of. On our last visit, she had pneumonia, and before I left, the tech brought her out for me to see. I got to give her a kiss and tell her I loved her. She passed away hours later. I am thankful for that last moment.
They even sent me a sympathy card.

The only reason I go to this office is for Dr. Bowles. I think the office staff is horrible, rude and short. I know they are busy but you can still be kind. I have followed Dr. Bowles to many offices and this by far the worst. I'm just glad Dr. Bowles is still great. I take all my pets there. This includes dogs. cats, reptiles

I really have a high opinion of Dr. Ryan and his staff. The hospital was warm and welcoming, and I intend to continue to take my exotic pets to them, even though I live in Columbia, MD.

I go to Dr Ryan's office and I see him or DR. Bowles. Dr. Bowles has treated my birds for several years now. They are both amazing vets. Like Jan said, yes sometimes there is a wait because they are compassionate and will wait for emergencies but the wait is worth it. I agree that sometimes you hold for ages. They are busy and well try to take care of everyone they can. Some of the staff can seem snippy at first but once they get to know you they are much better.

I have multiple birds and have taken them to Dr. Ryan for many years. He has always been informative and professional. He has treated birds with long term illnesses with care and great knowledge. Dr. Bowles who shares his practice is also wonderful. Is he all "touchy-feely"? No. He is to the point. Is there a wait? Sometimes, and sometimes it is excessive. This depends on if there has been an emergency that day. In my experience, the staff has been helpful and efficient. He also is reasonable for Avian care which is not cheap, but he offers you a choice in testing and treatment. If you want a hand-holding babysitter, this is not your place. If you want one of the best Avian Certified vets in the country, he's your man.

I had a cockatiel who was my baby. He became sick so I took him to see Dr. Ryan. I could tolerate the long wait, but when I was in the room, the nurse who needed to take my cockatiel to have blood drawn YELLED at him right in front of me. My cockatiel has never been yelled at. He wasn't stepping up onto her hand from mine so she got impatient. I was so heart broken as to what kind of care I was leaving my bird in because I had to leave him overnight. I came to get him the next day. My cockatiel died in my arms two days later. I called and left a message for Dr. Ryan on his machine that my cockatiel had passed away. He never even called me back to say sorry for your loss. Maybe they are good vets but they lack feelings and sympathy. I could feel the coldness when I walked in the office.

I had a good experience with this vet office and doctor Ryan. I took my new chinchilla there. He was very informative and helpful. My chin had diarrhea and I took her there to get her stool tested. We are new to having chinchillas and he spent time with my boyfriend and I to show us the anatomy of chinchillas and made sure we understood proper diet and techniques in handling them. Basically everything I've read online about chinchillas is wrong. I think Dr. Ryan should create an informative guide/website on the care of all small animals. Would be very helpful to people.

I am astonished at the negative reviews of this office. I agree that the staff are extremely busy, the wait can be long, and you can be kept on hold for a long time. However, when I am the one being served, I feel I have the full attention of the person helping me.

Dr. Ryan has gotten me through many difficult situations in the last year, and always has the best interest of the animal at heart. He is sensitive to financial and emotional concerns. He has years of experience and can often narrow a diagnosis down pretty well even before test results come back. He takes the time to educate me on medical matters and always asks whether I have more questions.

He helped me through the death of my beloved cat last year with great sensitivity, and even helped me think of ways to memorialize him.

I recently boarded my 16-year-old bunny with this office. She requires an extensive amount of care; had it not been properly given, I would have been able to tell by the condition of her skin. She was clean, and her skin actually in improved condition after her 3-day stay.

I know even a great office can have a bad day. But I have full confidence in the welfare of my pets at Feathers, Scales, and Tails, and have referred others there, as well.

We have two birds - an African Grey and an Amazon Double Yellow - and were looking for an anvian vet in the area. We were recommended to Feather Scales and Tails and after a number of visits and ONE VERY DISAPPOINTING experience in boarding, I limit my visits to nail and wing trims. As indicated by many of the other reviews, the hospital is chaotic, mis-information is given out and the exams are rushed. I believe Dr. Ryan tries but.... When we were given information about boarding the birds we believed what the staff told us. BIG MISTAKE!!! They said the birds would be given lots of attention, to bring treats, toys, etc. and they'd make sure they would be given to each. I called while out of town to check up and was told both were doing great, they were talking, etc.
When I arrived to pick them up I wanted to see them in their cages - and was shocked. The grey, which had never plucked before, was virtually 'naked' with feathers and down lining the bottom of his cage. Even the good natureded Amazon was shaking. And the treats? They were still in the bags on the floor, rotting. The toys were never even taken out of the bag as well. I was shocked and angry and when I pointed out the feathers the assistant said she never noticed them! This is the care they give!!!

I've read all of these posts prior to going to the visit at the office. I have a new bird and this is the closest avian vet to my house. I was nervous about going and almost cancelled because of the bad things written here. I'm glad I went. While there was a wait because the office was very, very busy, they took an amazing amount of time to help me.They took time to explain everything and apologized many, many times for the wait. They office staff was completely helpful unlike the other posts. I highly recommend them based off of my visit. Form your own opinion, don't believe everything you read. Additionally, the prices are very reasonable. This may be why they need to book so many visits because the visits are actually affordable.

I have never had a problem here and the prices are very good. The
Dr. always seems very competent and has fixed every problem and answered correctly every question I have had about my dog. This is a busy office but I appreciate them trying to get me in right away with a sick animal even if I have to wait a few minutes.

My family has been using Dr. Ryan (off and on) since he was a vet at Main Street Vet's in Reisterstown. I say off and on because, although I like Dr. Ryan and his associate, I have had difficulties with his office staff. In the past his office staff was more efficient and friendly. Now they are borderline incompetent. The past several visits I've had to schedule I've waited up to 1 hour (or more) past the appointment time to be seen by the vet. This wait was for no apparent reason other than overbooking. My time is valuable also!I also think that the office staff does not handle themselves well on the phone or in person. Many times they are short, abrupt and rude. I've had someone speak to me as though I'm a 2 year old that needs to be scolded.

The review written by Crystal D is one hundred percent false!
I worked for Dr. Ryan for over 13 years both at Main Street and at his current practice and not once has a surgery been performed without complete anesthesia or a local whichever was neccessary!
Euthanized or deceased animals are not left to lay around for hours upon hours. They are quickly placed in a proper bag and labeled with the animals name, owners name and date.

this has been my second trip to this vet with 2 different rabbits. Neither one had a pleasant outcome. If I knew then what I know now I would have taken my chances with fate naturally. I doubt Dr Ryan's sincerity, Yeah rabbits are a dime a dozen but she was a pleasant part of our family. I don't mind spending money for a good cause, but certainly not when I put our family member in his hands. Spare yourself the heartache don't go to him.

I just read other reviews and can NOT believe the last review posted! Dr. Ryan is the best Vet I have ever been to and I have had my pets to many!! I take my 2 dogs and cat there and he is great with them. He is not just a good vet to exotics!! I'm not sure how the last reviewer could claim to know the condition of the operating rooms or how long an animal lays after anesthesia?!? As far as performing surgery without anesthesia I don't believe this is true and if it is I'm sure Dr. Ryan had a valid reason for doing it. Dr. Ryan has performed surgeries on 2 of my pets with no complications whatsoever! The medication is always correct and dosage instruction are always clear. You can tell the staff there are all true animal lovers and are very kind to all of my pets when I take them there. Do not listen to the last review this is a great animal hospital!!!! I would recommend it to anyone I know!!!!

Would do surgeries without anesthesia and put animals into shock! The surgery rooms are not cleaned the way the should be as far as blood on floors and leaving animal that have been euthanized just lay around for hours.

Dr. Ryan is a very caring vet and he does his best to help each animal that comes into his clinic. I will say however that he is better with exiotic animals then he is with cats and dogs but I would use him anyway because he truly does care for your pets!

Dr. Thomas Ryan has treated both my water dragon and bearded dragon. Personally, I'm a perfectionist and a do-it-yourself kind of person so I studied both my lizards before getting them and also tried to figure out what was wrong when my water dragon stopped eating. I've read online it can be hard to find a good reptile/exotic vet so I wanted to be prepared. Feathers, Scales, and Tails had been recommended locally and online so I decided to make a trip 45 minutes south to their office. Dr. Ryan had the correct solution just from looking under a microscope and had no problem handling a paranoid water dragon. The results of a fecal test the next day matched up perfectly. My water dragon resumed eating just 3 days later and was back to his normal self in 5 days. I also brought in my bearded dragon shortly afterwards. The beardie wasn't displaying signs of sickness but Dr. Ryan recommended having him checked anyway and I thought it would be a good idea so nothing gets shared between my two lizards. You have to wait a day for fecal results, but again the diagnosis I was told to expect was spot on and normal for this species.

Dr. Ryan seems to know his reptile/exotic pet information. I've seen his name praised online for iguana care and the office was just buzzing with people bringing in birds, ferrets, small dogs, cats, snakes, and more. There aren't enough vets who treat a wide array of animals like this. The hours for this office are also generous.

I would rate 5 stars but I'm giving 4 since the office staff does seem to step on each others toes a lot. They get really busy and need a bigger desk area so multiple people can work there comfortably without bumping into each other, putting people on hold, or having a line in front of the desk. The office isn't always this busy though. I think a remodel of the front area could fix the problem, but the office is in a tight spot. The location is easy to get to and there's plenty of parking.

Have patience when you visit this office. Their prices are competitive and they know how to treat your animal right. You might have to wait a bit and they may not get to know and baby your animal, but you're coming here for your animal's well-being and that's what they're great at providing! I recommend coming here!

Unfortunately, this center has become incompetent and chaotic: It used to be reputable and competent.
Incorrect instructions given for medication. Misplacing my pets records on more than one occasion. Placed on hold and forgotten more times than I can remember. Misscheduling of my appointment. Procedures given by veterinarian were not followed by staff and I was not given the test results when they were available because of this. I alerted the vet of some of the first problems that occured but things only got worse. After the second set of results were sent to the wrong address, I decided it was time to find another vet. So I did, and am glad I did. No more problems like I experienced at this place.

PROS: It used to be competent here.
CONS: Incompetency all over the place.
