I brought my dog to Benson's to be diagnosed for a skin disorder that was causing her fur to fall out. After a brief examination the doctor indicated that the dog probably had allergies and gave her a steroid shot. When her condition did not improve he administered another dose a week or so later. The second shot caused, in my dog, the kind of symptoms typically associated with steroid overdose including hallucinations and paranoid behavior. This in the sweetest, most placid dog I have ever owned. After a third visit the staff appeared baffled by the situation and suggested an appointment with a Veterinary Dermatologist. After 15 minutes at the the Dermatologist's office we received a diagnosis of Scabies, a condition diagnosed by a simple skin scraping. After treatment with 'Revolution' her condition improved quickly. I paid hundreds of dollars for an overpriced, misdiagnosis at Benson, and not once was I offered an apology by the Veterinarian who overdosed my dog on steroids and failed to perform procedures Veterinarians learn in year one of Vet School. Not to malign the entire staff, as I have experienced Vets in this practice who appear to know what they are doing. If you take your dog here, however, you are taking a chance and paying a lot for it.

Worst vet I have ever been to. The old lady behind the desk was rude and unhelpful and the vet I saw didn't even seem to like dogs. I went for a simple eye infection and they went through a ridiculous string of tests which cost me lots of money.
Worst of all, they don't allow you to touch your dog while on the examining table. They had 2 men come in and restrain, choke hold and muzzle my 25lb dog who is the gentlest thing in the world. Completely unnecessary and awful. By the end my dog was terrified and I had paid a fortune. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

This place is very frustrating and irritating. Although some may see this as being thorough, putting roadblocks up for no reason is NOT caring for the welfare of an animal. We left a bag of feline Hills Diet R/D at the beach and needed a small bag to use in the interim. First I was told by Benson that I needed a prescription. So I called the vet we use and they faxed an okay on letterhead (and even they said asking for an actual Rx was a bit much). I called and told Benson I had an okay. Put on hold. Then told to leave a fair amount of time at their office because they had to set up a file for my cat if I purchased the R/D from them. Our cat has been eating this for years and we would never put her at risk (plus she'd much rather eat the good stuff anyway). This is just an example of being treated rudely because you are not a client - for a bag of food!!! I am thankful this was not a real medical emergency. I found a more obliging veterinary office, thank you.

You will not find better veterinary care any where. Reputation among people in Bethesda is A++. I'm a "cat person," and my cats have been seen by Dr. Benson for over 15 years. My cats have had "the usuals," and one has had a couple of beyond-the-usual surgeries. Dr. Benson the senior has been a veterinarian for over 50 years. His son is also there, and his son has been a veterinarian for (probably) over 25 years. They employ additional veterinarians as needed. If you have the choice, opt for either Dr. Bension senior or junior; however, every veterinarian I've ever dealt with there has been fantastic. And the front-desk folks are wonderful, and the animal techs are good.

The thing I like is that Dr. Benson doesn't "guess" what is wrong with my cats; rather, he'll do the testing necessary to determine what is wrong. His fees are within the range of vet charges in the Bethesda area. Those who say that his fees are "high" have not been looking at fees in the Bethesda area inside the Beltway.

It's nothing out of the ordinary for Dr. Benson (senior or junior) to take home with him at night an animal that is sick and that Dr. Benson feels is in need of monitoring throughout the night. These are folks who genuinely love animals and who have the know-how to help them. At the same time, they are respectful of the clients. Several years ago, one cat was sick, had been hospitalized for several days and already run up a big bill. I was frank with Dr. Benson, said, "I love the cat, but the bill's going too high. My choice is to take her home now." Dr. Benson then explained what I would have to do for the cat at home and what I would have to watch for. I had to do a good bit more for her than just "take her home," but Dr. Benson made sure that I understood what had to be done. And he made no judgment about my saying I could spend no more.

In response to those who have posted about costs, please understand that Dr. Benson and his staff are always quite willing to talk about costs. The only time that has not been the case has been when I've said, "Do whatever is needed. Treat this animal as if it were your child's pet."

You might find cheaper vet care, but you could not find better veterinarian care for your companion animals.

We took our animals to Benson for years and were always happy with the care we got - especially from Drs. Benson Senior and Junior. But you'd better bring your checkbook for tests. And then they got bigger and we wound up seeing a different vet - who may or may not have known anything about our pets - most times.

The last straw was when one of our dogs was passing some blood in his urine. We took him in about 7:30 one morning and Dr. Benson Sr. said "let me keep an eye on him today." We left him. No discussion about tests or anything.

We got a call late in the day. "I think your dog had a stroke. Let us keep him overnight and keep an eye on him." Still nothing about tests or anything.

Then we get a call at 10 p.m. that night. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but (your dog) had another stroke and died." Just like that. Between 7:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. while they "kept an eye on him" he died.

And THEN we got a bill for $1,100. $200-some of it was for cremation, but wow. Nobody ever asked us to authorize any tests, nor did they tell us they were going to GIVE him any tests.

To their credit, they did knock a couple of hundred off the bill, but it has taken us a while to pay it down.

Bottom line, we can't afford to just leave a very with a blank check like that. $1,100 to keep an eye (and not a very close one as it turned out) on him was kind of steep. They should have talked to us about tests first.

Great for the carriage trade from Potomac. But normal folks need to look elsewhere. There are better vets who are focused on the animals more than the $$$.

I was told by Dr. Benson that $550 is, "not a lot of money."

"Most people who come in to Benson Animal Hospital do not wish to be informed of charges before they are incurred. They don't care what it costs."

Apparently, I am crazy to think that the veterinarian should inform me before performing tests that cost more than $100.

I was told by the front desk person that an x-ray costs $75. I was then charged $125, per x-ray, and Dr. Benson told me that those two dollar amounts were, "in the same ballpark."

On one occasion I incurred charges in excess of $2000 without being informed in advance.

What's more - he was never able to determine what was wrong with my cat.

We brought our dog in after we noticed jaundice and lack of appetite. Immediately we were told he had a 60% chance of survival (no diagnosis), which was a shock to us because he'd never had a single health problem throughout his life. We were told all diagnostic tests would cost twice as much at the animal ER but that they could run the same tests at Benson, they would just take longer. They took too long.

We were forced to leave him overnight on a Friday, no conclusive results on Saturday but were told our dog was doing fine. More tests. Sunday we were told he was doing fine. More tests. Monday they told us to come in because he was dying!! It was a horrific shock and we are still wondering why it took 4 days for them to run tests that never determined he had cancer (discovered post-mortem). We wish our poor baby hadn't lived his last 4 days alone in a hospital kennel instead of at home with us. The doctor cried with us as we put him down and was very sympathetic. I give it THREE (3) stars, but this site is glitchy and won't let me.

Absolutely superb. Dr Benson is just a wonderful doctor and human being. He is very patient and caring, and goes out of his way for both his patients and their owners, even to allowing me to visit my hospitalized kitty after hours to accommodate my work schedule.e have been taking our pets there for over 20 years.

They are AMAZING! My puppy got very sick last night and the Vet has been calling frequently out side of office hours. Our little puppy is still sick but Dr. Benson is keeping a very close eye on him. We are very grateful.

I discovered Benson Animal Hospital when I had a very sick kitty on my hands, who was pushing ten years old. He had multiple problems, and the prognosis was not good. We were in the office every day for more than a week, getting fluids, shots, blood work, etc. Every person on the team was truly caring and supportive.

In light of my cat's condition, they recommended that I have him put to sleep, but gave me suggestions for alternate treatments that we could consider before going that route. I was impressed that they were very knowledgeable and competent at every turn. They explained the advantages of each choice, and left the decision with me. They did not pass judgment when I chose a course of action that might not have been their first choice, given his condition. They always respected my wishes.

The whole feel of Benson Animal Hospital is one of a family owned and operated business, where the client and the patients always come first. I can't say enough great things about the kindness and consideration they showed both to me and to my sick animal.

The good news is that even though we did not expect him to make it, it is now several weeks later, and he has rallied and makes more improvements every day! I am so grateful to them for their care and professionalism.
