This is about the Mama Wok at 595 Hungerford Dr. Rockville. MD 20850. It was a disappointing experience.
We are vegetarians and the item that we wanted from the menu was not available so we asked the cook to improvise. The kitchen lady said that 'they cannot take the trouble to make what we wanted' and that the boss was not around otherwise they would be sacked.
Subsequently the two variety of dishes we ordered looked the same and the third was not what we ordered. Looks like this restaurant is messed up. I would never go back to it or recommend anyone else to eat there. Service was lousy too.

I really like this place for its traditional Chinese food (i.e. not the Americanized fare that are typical in many US restaurants) and the complementing sushi bar. My wife is Chinese so I know a bit about real Chinese food and this restaurant has it. The eggplant with basil is one tasty dish! They also have a pork chop dish I love, pai gu. The sashimi is very fresh and you get large pieces, not the thin pieces that a lot of restaurants serve these days. The Dancing Eel roll is awesome as are some of the other specialty rolls. I have eaten there three times now and I plan to go back again an again. If you are Chinese you will love this place and if you are American you should go see what they really eat in China. Yummy!

I was pleasantly surprised with Mama Wok. Given the shopping center it was in, I expected a dingy atmosphere, but the restaurant itself was very clean and had nice ambience for your generic Chinese take-out. I ate in the restaurant, and between my group we tried the standard American-Chinese fare - sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, lo mein, etc. It was all tasty. The egg rolls were excellent - not nearly as heavy as many other take-out places. Have not tried the sushi. The only con I would mention is that the price is a little on the high side. Not outrageous, though, and I suppose you get what you pay for.

Cons:The food was overpriced and not cooked very well. It actually made me sick.
Pros: The portions are really large and the service was good. They offer take-out and delivery, for the right price. The restaurant has a nice interior.

We had a family dinner at Mama Wok and were pleased to find something for everyone. The grandparents with gourmet Chinese taste enjoyed the chef's special stir-fried tender slices of lotus root and seafood hot pot. Grandchildren who just wanted simple basic American Chinese food enjoyed enormous bowls of beef noodle soup. The salt and pepper shrimp featured large prawns, deep-fried to perfection without any greasy feel. We were not very adventurous with sushi, but the California roll was nicely done. The price was reasonable. Service was unobtrusive and efficient, helpful with menu suggestions but not overly friendly. The interior decor was nicer than the location in a corner shopping center would lead you to expect.
