Horrible! Now Puppy Palace, beware of getting an animal here. Good job to Anne Arundel County for allowing this shady operation to continue business....

I don't know how you can walk into a place like that and not know the quality of its business just by the smell. I don't care if it's under new management. My dog Lucy was from pets galore, but we didn't buy her from them. Nobody in their right mind would ever intentionally buy a pet from there. A family friend was in pets galore with a friend of his. He noticed them putting a puppy into a brown cardboard box and closing and taping the lid. You know why? Because she kept jumping out of the pens. He felt so bad and knew he couldn't leave her there so he bought her just to get her out of that dump. He didn't know what to do with her so he called everyone he knew and nobody would take her but my family did. Shes the sweetest dog you'd ever meet, but she has clear signs of abuse.
On another note, my best friend had bought two puppies from there, a jack russel and a weenie dog. Not even a week after having them they were diagnosed with kennel cough. I don't recall anyone from the buisness willing to pay for their vet care. As far as in concerned this "pet store" is a puppy mill and they're discussing. All owners, past an present, should be arrested and charged with animal abuse and neglect. Save your money and adopt a pet at the ASPCA or BARCS. if your looking for a puppy, buy one from a breeder. It may be more expensive, but atleast you know exactly where the puppy came from.

i recently purchased a jack russell puppy from pets galore and things couldn't have gone, nor be, better! i loved the lay out of the store and the fact that you could have actual contact with each puppy. i was a little reluctant to go to this shop based on other reviews i had read, but decided to check it out for myself and was not disappointed. none of the puppies were in over crowded conditions (2 to a pen) and they all appeared happy, energetic, and most importantly healthy! the staff was absolutely wonderful, informative, and patient with any questions i had. the only reason i gave it 4 out of 5 was because their prices are a tad high, but it was money well spent. i couldn't be happier with my crazy little jack russell pup. thanks pets galore!

Don't buy a puppy from this place. I just recieved my dna results for a puppy I pruchased from this place today. I was told by Pets Galore that my puppy was a Boxer/Lab mix. They even wrote this on the contract I signed in the store. Then I had some friends say, No way my puppy was a boxer/lab mix. They all said he is a pit bull. So I decided to spend the $60 and get a dna test done by Wisdom Panel. I got the dna kit, toke my dog to my vet and had the vet complete the kit and mail off the test to Wisdom Panel. I got the results back today. My dog is 75% pit bull and 25% other breeds. Only 4% is a boxer and 0% is lab. If you bought a box/lab some time around Dec 2011 from this place, I want to let you know that is not what you have. If you would like to see the dna results I had done feel free to contact me at sinclair.realty at gmail

I just moved to the area. If its under new management, I can't imagine what it was like before. I'm looking to purchase 2 puppies. And like everyone else I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I walked into pets galore and was immediately unimpressed. Theres stains on the floor and the one employee was very rude. I saw online that you can pet and play with the puppies but I very quickly saw that this was a ploy to get people into the store. You cannot play with the puppies. In fact, there's NOT A SINGLE TOY in any pen for puppies to play with. My scarf dropped into a pen and a poodle swung at it with her paw, and the hawk eyed employee YELLED at me for playing with the puppies. Oh I'm sorry, I thought puppies were supposed to be playful? I'd like to see a puppys personality before I buy it. I felt like I was being watched like I was a child. I'm 24 years old, married, and stable. If I were a pet store owner, that's exactly the demographic I would be after. Nope. I asked if they ever get in australian shepherds. The answer was a cold and stiff, "rarely." great. Thanks for the information.

Can't wait for the owners reply. After reading the reviews and reading the owners relies to some of the comments, I am stunned at your immaturity. What are you, 15? Grow up. And try a little harder to run a reputable business.

I lost my father and my husband took me in the store the next morning to look at the pupplies looking for a Jack Russell. They advertise that you can pet the puppies and I saw one that I thought looked adorable. I asked to see the puppy and the woman at the register very rudely just said NO!. I asked why not and she said that I could only see the puppy if I was going to buy it. I asked how would I know that until I got to see the puppy? She ignored me and another tech came out and my sister-in-law asked to see her and she let us. She was adorable and just what I needed after my Dad's passing. After looking around at the other pup's in the store, I felt so bad for them. The store smells terrible, their food is contaminated, the poodles are filthy from rolling in their own poo. I had to save her! She's been such a blessing to me. Their dogs need saved from them, but you hate to make a market for them bring more in also.

I hope people read this story and trust me. I have worked at a handful of different petstores in the glen burnie/millersville area and this is not a reputable place. I have not worked there but I can gaurantee you that if you buy a puppy from them you are supporting puppy mills. Even if you get papers with your dog what the papers woldnt tell you is how poorly treated they were even BEFORE they arrived at the store. I have heard horror stories of the amount of puppies that DIE in their care. Puppies from puppy mills are a huge financial risk. You will be hating your life if you go home with your new family member and its getting so sick that you end up spending hundreds of dollars at the vets office. Kennel cough is not the worst of it. When a dog gets Parvo and its caught too late theres little to nothing you can do to save it. Trust me when I say that this is not the place you want to go to purchase puppies. Someone told me a story about how they had a trashbag in the back of dachshund puppies that were sick, lifeless and dying. So what does this mean? I guess they didnt want to pay the vet bills either so they were just letting them slowly die? If they don't want those problems to begin with it requires them actually knowing where their puppies are coming from, visiting the breeders, and knowing that they are reputable and not puppy mill facilities. Puppy mills inbreed, and this is how we end up with genetically messed up pets. I haven't been there in awhile but the last time I was they were still keeping the puppies in pens with WOOD CHIPS on the bottom. Thats right... woodchips in their water, in their food, and if they are eating them... in their stomachs. Woodchips that they are soiling in all day long. I've watched the employees come around and dump new food and water on top of the existing dirty old food and water, it just goes to show they don't have any idea what they are doing. Hopefully this has changed, but if not I still would never buy a puppy from here. New management or not. The management would be better off relocating and NEVER using the name Pets Galore again. Good luck to all those who have already purchased from there and say your prayers because you are Lucky that you didn't have a bad experience.

Being a veterinary technician at a local hospital, I've seen both sides of the Pet's Galore puppies. They are either healthy, or mildly to seriously ill. Kennel cough should be expected with animals living in such close quarters. If they were in "cages" by themselves or with just their littermates this would decrease the outbreak of bordetella. And left unattended to, will almost always progress to pnuemonia. And just because you vaccinate for bordetella, doesn't mean the puppies will not develop another strain of the disease.
A vaccine, reagardless of which on, is meant to stimulate an animals immune system so that their bodies can fight off disease or infection. Vaccines given to close together (ie: less than 3-4 weeks apart) does not give adequate time for their immune system to recover after being compromised by the first one. If pet stores, and breeders would just read AVMA vaccination protocols for puppies/kittens, they would probably have healthier animals. When their immune system is already compromised, and you keep putting more antigens into their little bodies within a week or 10 days. What else would you expect? That is why veterinarians have vaccine protocols! They go to school, continuing ed classes, etc. To do the best for their patients.
Stop trying to be socially "acceptable", and do what is right. Quarantine your puppies until they are deemed "healthy" by a veterinarian. Wait at least 2 weeks to see if any of them show any sign of illness. And who gives a s**t if they are in a cage! At least you would know that any illness would be somewhat "contained".
I'm not bashing Pet's Galore, nor am I praising them either. I just believe from what I see in their paperwork that they go overboard with vaccines. If you buy, adopt, rescue any animal, there will always be risks associated with it. I don't believe they are a totally awful place, just need guidance.

I bought two puppies at Pets Galore. it smelled like wet dog....certainly not feaces. I bought Dobie the dach in July of 2007 after having 2 miserable experiences trying to do the right thing with a pet shelter. Dobie is highly strung.. and very funny and loving with it, When I got him home he did have an awfull upset tummy and I called the store who requested I take him back so they could see what was going on. They did quarentine Dobie for a couple of days and then released him back to me with some medicine and he was fine. The vet check at that time confirmed Dobie was in fine fettle and he has been ever since.
We bought Zelda a few months later absolutely no problems. She is the joy of the household. Some problems cant be avoided like kennel cough, tummy bugs,, bacterias are all over the place, I think it often times makes us crazy when it comes to dogs and kids. I wouldnt like to think of anyone or anything suffering or maltreated and I do not think this is the case at all at this store.

I know they say they are under new management. But Aug 2010 I went there with my daughter to look at the puppies. I noticed sores on some of them and a couple of puppies seemed to be sick. In fact I kept trying to get one to come to me, cause it was just sitting in the corner, and when it finally got up it fell back down. i am not a vet or anything like that, but something didn't seem right. I understand if they are under new management now and they don't want to reap what the old management did. I agree they shouldn't have to. But whoever was running it when I went there, well they should be under investigation or something. Puppies should have sore or legions, and shouldn't fall down and not be able to get up.

Pets Galore is the best place in town to purchase a puppy. All the pets are vet checked and up to date on shots, dewormed. All of the Pets ALWAYS have food and water. I have bought 4 (years 06,07,08,09) pugs from there. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable on every question I had. NONE of the puppies are from puppy mills. They are from local breeders and mistakes in the neighborhood. The puppies did not look sickly at all. Puppies like to take naps just like a newborn baby does. Lots of puppies are shy, just like small children. It was very clean and tidy. Even the lizards and turtles were happy chewing on there lettuce and crickets. I recommend Pets Galore to everyone I know. Do not be fooled by these people just complaining about whatever they can.

I have recently relocated to Maryland and am the owner of a 2 1/2 year old male Yorkie. A co-worker recommended Pets Galore, because he bought his wife a Pom and insists that the prices were reasonable. I am interested in another Yorkie or small breed puppy so I visited the store. I've had my eye on a little girl, and I'm still on the fence about whether or not I can devote the necessary time to a little puppy without the help of my (reluctant partner :)) Although the store has a bit of a stench from dogs and perhaps the other animals, and the staff is lacking a bit of tact, even though they are very knowledgable, and the manager who has an absolutely terrible attitide, I didn't think the experience was all that bad, especially considering I'm interested in taking a puppy home NOT the employees. Now I'm totally concerned about the financial burden I may incur buying a puppy from here based on the reviews! Who's telling the truth and who isn't?? I know I want another addition to the family, and I am seriously considering Pets Galore, but is it worth ignoring the reviews?

I am a vet with 3 years experience behind me. And what alot of puppies experince due to their under-developed emune systems is kennel cough. It's like the common cold for humans. And yes it can progress very rapidly. I have just called pets-galore looking for a small dog to purchace, and the lady who anwsered the phone was ver helpful to me. And as I can see they're under new management. So the current ower should not have to reap what the prior owner sowed. And if you people support this "dishing" of the new manager for what the old manager did... I have one queion for you. Should Obama take doo-doo for what Bush did when in office? Does that make him a bad president for what BUSH did and not him?

I recently purchased a puppy from this store, something I swore I would never do (I'm very familiar with their practices). However, this particular puppy looked so sickly and was being picked on so badly by the other pups in the box it was in that I felt sorry for it, so I wanted to hold it (very bad idea cause it broke my heart and I couldn't leave it there). After holding him for a while in their little make-shift "bonding area," I could tell the poor little thing was pretty traumatized, he stayed shaking in a corner hunkered down to the floor (not your typical up and at 'em puppy behavior) and then when I sat on the floor to be at the pup's level, he got in my lap and tried to get as close to me as he could, even trying to crawl in my coat, as if he was scared to death of being put back in the box.

Anyway, I paid an exorbitant amount of money for this puppy, more than any reputable breeder would've charged for a better quality pup (cute as it is, he's definitely not a quality specimen of the breed by any means). Took the pup home to find out by the next morning that he had kennel cough (symptoms appeared overnight). Supposedly the store's vet (or rather, employees) had administered bordatella vaccines, but either that was a lie, or the puppy contracted another strain of the sickness before leaving the store. There certainly wasn't time to get sick at my house since it happened overnight.

It could very well have been caused by chemical toxins. While I was there, the teenagers that seem to run the place were cleaning out the boxes while the pups were in there -- with wipes and buckets that smelled like they had bleach in the water. Then the girl walked slowly thru the store, weaving around the boxes of puppies with a can of lysol held at her head (her hand resting on her head) spraying continuously as she went (not in bursts, literally had her finger on the spray button making a constant stream). She might've been 5' (I mention this because of how close the spray would be to the puppies). So this bottle of lysol was spraying out toxins at an enormous rate as she walked slowly thru the store making sure to get as close to the puppy boxes as possible (and all the other animals too) -- I can only imagine what those kinds of chemical inhalants due to a puppy's lungs and immune system. Especially since I imagine it's done every day. It had MY eyes stinging and caused ME to cough as I inhaled it. So has to be doing a number on those poor pups as it streams down over them.

It took several vet visits, a myriad of medications and many weeks before the puppy seemed better. Poor thing's still not 100%, but is better. The vet said that symptoms may linger for a long time since the illness had set in pretty well before I brought the puppy home (the sickness was so far advanced, it HAD to have set in before I bought the puppy, no other explanation).

Anyway, after some comments by serious "dog people" such as rescue workers, the vet, and the groomer about the way the dog looks, I've come to question whether he's purebred or not. He has distinct mix breed characteristics; you can see traits of two breeds definitely. I also checked the paperwork and found out the dog's from a well known puppy mill (big shock there!). So much for their claim that they buy from reputable "local breeders." This was by no means a reputable local breeder -- It is a large scale, well known puppy mill in another state.

I'm going to have a DNA test done thru the vet. And if it turns out that the dog is indeed a mix breed, I will certainly be getting my lawyer involved to sue the store. No doubt about that whatsoever.

Even though you may be tempted to buy from this store because of the state the puppies are in (they will tug at your heartstrings for sure), please don't. As sad as the situation is and as badly as I feel for the puppies subjected to those conditions (I wish I could've saved more), the only way to stop puppy mills and stores like this are to avoid them altogether.

I imagine I'm in for a legal battle once I get the DNA results back. As much as I love this pup, that's not the point -- It's the principal of the matter and the fact that the store knowingly sells sick puppies and most likely knowingly sells mix breed puppies as purebreds. I will definitely pursue legal action depending on the results.

I visited "Pets Galore" with my daughter this evening (1/12/09). We've been there a few times in the past and the experience has been fine... I've also had a number of family members purchase puppies from them in the past. Upon viewing and playing with the puppies.. my daughter was approached by one of the employees and asked her age... she replied im 16 years old and the employee proceeded to tell her that she needed to go and stay with her "mother" (me) !! Confused, i asked the employee what just happened and she stated to me that they have a sign on the door that states anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult... ok - so my 16 year old WAS accompanied by an adult!! i did not know that "accompanied by" meant that i had to hold the hand of my 16 year old!!! she is old enough to drive a car for petes sake !! I asked to speak with the manager, because if we were to remain in the store and look for a puppy to PURCHASE - i was not going to follow around my daughter, nor was she going to follow around me rubbing elbows because she is under 18!! The manager STORMED out of the back and again stated to my daughter - "how old are you - you need to go and stand with your mom!!!" at this point we were looking into the same crate but just on opposite sides!!! are you serious???? this place is a joke - and they completely lost a sale from me, and anyone that i come in contact with who is even remotely interested in purchasing a puppy!! I've never been so insulted in my life! They also must not know the true meaning of "accompanied by" - because it means that i (the adult) must be present.... (which i was) Not holding the hand of my almost adult 16 year old, responsible daughter!!! No stars for me - based solely on customer service, and customer satisfaction !!! Again - what a JOKE !

I recently got a new puppy from Pets Galore. He is a PomAPoo and was born 8/12 and his name is Marley. I am a dog lover and i am a serious dog owner meaning i like my dogs well behaved and well trained. I have a 10 year old Pug and our new Pomapoo is just a wonderful addition to our pack. Marley is a healthy animal with natural instincts which leads me to believe he was with his mother after birth and got to understand natural behavior. Since day one he has not soiled his bed (most puppy mill puppies soil their bed because they lost the natural instinct to not lay in their own urine and feces) Marley seems to have that sense and only goes potty once outside the crate and once he is walked. His intelligence is superb (a sign of good breeding) after only a week and a half he knows to "come" to "Sit" to "lay down" and to shake your hands "paw". He is a good boy and follows leadership and has become friends with our much older Pug who is acting like a grand ma than a friend :). The store did seem to care about all the animals and the owners information was made available to me with a 10 day health guarantee. His 10 days are over now and i will be taking him to my Vet to get him on track and make sure he receives the rest of his vaccinations. For all those that are talking bad about Pets Galore - it seems like it was a particular instance and or the person writing the review had a personal vendetta. I've already recommended Pets Galore to many friends and many people that see how much of a great dog Marley is and will continue to promote Pets Galore. As many of the large stores seem to only care about a false appearance Pets Galore gives you the true experience of being around animals and pets! Thanks Pets Galore :) - Happy Customer from VA

I think people need to give pets galore any chance. Pets Galore has been purchased by a new owner and I do see lots of improvements there . I too have seen the how it used to be with the dirty pens for the animals but I have seen much improvements with the clean pens and the maintains the pens very well . Everytime I have been in there I have seenthe staff canging the animals water and cleanning the animals living area. The staff is very helpfull and friendly .I think the only problem would have been is the new owner should had changed the name of the business so she would had not taken such a bad rap from how the past owner did. by t.m

My husband and I went to Pets Galore at opening to look for a puppy to bring home to our 2 year old maltese. When we arrived, we were "greeted" by 3-4 teenagers who had no sense of customer service whatsoever. After walking around in the store for 10-15 minutes, we noticed almost none of the dogs seemed to be energetic. In one of the "pens" as they call them, a puppy tried to get up to walk over towards me, and fell into a bowl of food and refused to get up. None of the pens had sufficient water and if there was water, it was dirty or almost empty. A girl walked over to us and asked if we needed help, when I responded no, but that she should look at the "sick puppy" she responded that he was just tired because she had been cleaning the pen. She got into the pen, picked up the puppy and shook it a little. Oh hes fine she replied. We then left. What a nightmare. Perhaps the owner/manager of this place should look for some individuals that are a bit older and more mature to supervise the younger employees... and take better care of the animals they attempt to sell for 500+.

I looked into getting a playmate for my dog. When I first walked in the, the staff was very rude and impolite. I wanted to look at a puppy and I was told that I could not look at the puppy because I had a child with me. I just wanted a closer look at the puppy. I figured I would give Pets Galore a chance and I am not sure why I did. I was warned by a friend who purchased a puppy from there not to go there because her puppy got sick and died within six months. The vet had said it had something that was genetically wrong with him. I will not buy a puppy from there.

I am currently the owner of a very energetic black male pug named Roscoe. We purchased him from Pets Galore 1 1/2 years ago. The employees at the store were very helpful and very honest with me. When we went to see Roscoe the for the first time, he was feeling a little under the weather. The employee helping us informed us that he was getting over a cold. Not a big deal, puppies have not the best immune systems considering they are so young. He was being treated accordingly. He also had a scar on his right eye that had occurred shortly after birth. Eye injuries are very common in pugs.We chose Roscoe out of the litter of 3. They asked that we wait a few days until he felt up to par. We picked up Roscoe from the store good as new that weekend. He has no problems following his trip home. Even our own personal vet guaranteed us that he was in perfect health, minus the scar to his eye. The vet did tell us that seemed to see just fine through that eye as well, which was great news for us. My sister Jenny also has a dog that she purchased from Pets Galore. His name is Monte and he is a Shi-tzu. She also had a very positive experience when purchasing her puppy. Monte had not health problems, and has had none to date. He is a very personable 3 year old Shi-tzu.On another note. I would just like to tell everyone that I would be more than willing to purchase another pet from Pets Galore. The shop is not the prettiest with fancy cages and displays, but this is how that keep the cost of the puppies down. It allows people who may not have $1500 for a puppy, like the cost of the franchise puppy stores, to afford one. all of the puppies I have ever seen in the store are well fed and happy and as clean as you can expect a playful 10 week old puppy to be.Thank you Pets Galore for such a wonderful addition to our family.

I have a bearded dragon and I went to Pets Galore every other day to buy crickets and hornworms. They weren't bad at first even though I've heard lots of stories. About 2 weeks ago I went to buy hornworms and the manager sold me 30 dollars worth of DEAD hornworms!!!!! I didn't know until I got home and when I called they acted like they didn't even care.....even though they are not hurting me they are hurting my animals. Pets Galore is the absolute worst place to go.

Actually, I can believe the story below from Kristina. The same thing happened to me. Nursing my puppy back to health cost over a $1000 in vet bills. She had a cough with fluid in her lungs. I will say that since it happened the day after I brought her home, the store did her take her for treatment and was going to pay the costs. But, this is where my nightmare began. After dropping her off for treatment, they kept for 10 days. Every time I called to check on her, all I got was ??she??s fine?. I asked to speak to the Manager or the Owner every day, several times a day, and yet they were never there. I asked for proof that she was being treated, vet name, phone numbers, papers, ANYTHING!!!! And did I ever get proof? NO. Could they provide proof to the BBB when I reported them? NO. On the 10th day I went to got her because I was sick of the run around game they were playing. They would not give her back to me until I walked out the store and called the police. Once they showed up, I got the puppy back. Who by the way, was like a limp noodle with no expressions of joy to bear. She was so sick. I took her immediately to a 24 hour vet emergency clinic. They told me they would do all they could be she would probably not make it because of the amount of fluid and blood in her lungs and all the infections that had spread. Two weeks in the hospital and 100 pills later she has survived. She does have scaring on her lungs and breathing problems now from all the damage it caused. All of this because they never treated her. I thank god every day that she is alive, but I have made it my personal goal to make sure that they get shut down.

I recently visited Pets Galore with my husband on June 7, 2009. When I came in I had no intention of getting a puppy but we ended walking out with one or rather SAVING one I should say. The place place smelled disgusting and the first part that I thought was interesting, they claim "they never put there pets behind glass" and that is one of the first things I saw 2 little Yorke's in what appeared to be in a bunny tank! Now begins my story. As I was looking at all the puppies they were all sickly looking it broke me heart, its as if each and ever single one of them wanted to be taken home and if I had a farm I would have taken them all. After browsing we found an adorable little of Rottweiler puppies. We ended up selecting a sweet little male from the bunch whom we now call "Brody" and he is an absolute joy for my family. Here's where the bad part begins. Upon bringing him home we noticed he had a little cough, which we chalked up to being nerves and we would have checked out at his well puppy appointment. Well not even 2 days later the coughing had gotten worse and his breathing was so shallow,k at 4:30am on Monday morning my puppy staring coughing up BLOOD, yes I said blood. I immediately tried to contact the store owner which took about 2 hours to reach so you can already see her sleep in time is more important than the animals she so called "cares" for. When she finally called us back she almost convinced my husband to let them keep the dog for 10 and THEIR vet work on the dog. To me that was very suspicious and I did not trust it. Needless to say I said No I am not leaving my dog, the owner then told us to meet us at her store at 8:30am that day and needless to say she NEVER showed her fat ignorant manager was there instead. They tried to have us sign a BOGUS contract and we wouldn't. The manager got the owner on the phone and she said "Okay well we will take him to the vet and bring him back this afternoon" Now keep in mind my precious dog is losing it by the second. My husband said "we will go with you" The owner told us No and when we asked her why she said "the vet doesn't like customers" Now you tell me who the IN THE WORLD says that!? I ran out of that place and immediately rushed him to my own vet. My vet whom I love so greatly rushed him back to triage and the results brought me to my knees. My little 11 week old puppy had full blown pneumonia the worst the vet had ever seen. My vet told me if we had brought him in any later he would have died. I was hysterical to say the least. So now my 11 week old puppy is in the ICU area of the vets and will remain there for 5 days hooked up to IVS and Med pumps. We tell him everyday when we visit just how much we love him and I thank GOD EVERYDAY for letting us rescue him from this scum hole. Our vet bill is outrageous and lucky for us we have the money, but could you imagine if we were less fortunate our dog would have died? DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE. Oh and on top of that no one from Pets Galore not even the piece of scum owner even called to see if he was okay. I have EVER single animal activist rights group on these people right now and I won't stop until they are shut down! Please Please do not buy from this PUPPY MILL!! I beg of you, find a reputable breeder and speak with them. I am concerned about all of these animals that lay in there own urine and feces at this place. And now I have to make sure my other pets do not get pneumonia from the baby because it is contagious. I hope you people go to hell for what you have done and thank GOD my Brody is not with you horrible nasty people anymore.P.S. I would rate this place with NO STARS if I could because they are disgusting and below unsatisfactory!!!

Response from this business:

Incredibly One-Sided Let's start by stating facts-not personal attacks like calling people fat Anyone can be fine one day but sick the next-same with puppies. It is not something I can control but what I can control is that my customers do not spend a dime on medical issues-which is why I have a guarantee, put my home number on the contract, and have my manager come to the store whenever needed to make sure puppies get medical attention when needed. If someone refuses free medical treatment then wants to rant and rave - there is not much I can do. Animal Control performed an investigation and found that we were not negligent.I got up at 7:00am-returned the call immediately. The store didn't open until 10am-I called my manager who threw on her clothes and met them at the pet store at 8:30am. When they arrived, Kristina was screaming at us and using the "F" word. Michelle went to get paper work and they walked out the door. We do not disclose the name of our vet for exactly this reason. People can be vulgar, rude, and create scenes that vets don't want to deal with.
.

While I have not had much experience with Pets Galore, I have been in the store in the past. I am a local breeder of golden retrievers and am very concerned about the comments concerning Pets Galore. Everyone who is looking for a puppy should perform due diligence before purchasing, no matter where they are purchasing. Local breed specific organizations can recommend reputable breeders, who breed to enhance the breed; not merely to make money.

I Understand Your Concern Please do not judge a operation by a few people's comments. Remember - only unhappy people and my competition pretending to be customers write on these pages. We have hundreds of happy customers - which of course never take the time to write. I know breeders are not generally in favor of pet stores and understand your position - but hope you do not prejudge us. I would be happy to speak with you personally if that would make you feel better about the treatment of our puppies.
.

I would NOT recommend this store to ANYONE! I've been there many many times, and its always the same. The poor puppies in the side room, just lay on the floor lifeless and depressed. as far as the whole 'we don't believe cages', not true. I've been in the back room, and they definitely had a two layered cage with SEVERAL puppies in them. And the poor little 'layaway puppies' and not taken care of the way the rest are. When we bought one of our puppies there, we used the layaway room and our puppy was COVERED in poop and it was all over his pen, and he had a bone dry water dish. Last but definitely not least, the owner of the store has to be one of the RUDEST people I have ever met. Once while I was there I heard her yelling, screaming, and barking orders at the employees. She puts on a nice act, but that's all it is, an act!

Response from this business:

Clearing up the facts It's clear that when you have come to the store the puppies were sleeping. To say they were lifeless and just laying there - well that's what puppies do when they sleep. These puppies get to stay together in pens and play together. Get to be petted by customers just reaching down in the pens - so they get lots of attention and need to sleep. Puppies need about 19 hours of sleep a day. As far as the my standing at the door and barking order - that is not possible because I do not manage the store on a daily basis.
.

I don't think anyone here understands what a puppy mill is. Puppy mills are places where a female is bred constantly. She is constantly producing litters and the litters are back bred so much they produce unhealthy animals. I would not be surprised if Pets Galore gets their animals from a puppy mill. If not a puppy mill then a terrible backyard breeder. So what if the puppies aren't in cages? That's the least of the problems out there in most pet stores. So what if they're given shots on site? The fact of the matter is that these animals are bred like crazy when there are perfectly healthy animals in shelters. When you buy from a pet store you're sentencing a shelter animal to death. Even if it's a "no kill" shelter that animal is still lonely because you all choose to buy from a pet store that claims to sell "purebreds" People who shop there and buy their animals there are doing nothing but contributing to the death of so many shelter animals...mutts and purebreds!

Response from this business:

Shelters vs Pet Store This has been an age-old discussion. I feel we do the best we can by not having puppies shipped in - either by truck or airplane - from the puppy mills in the midwest. We buy puppies from local people and personally drive to pick them up - which is more effort than any of our competitors. I know there are people who totally think you should adopt a pet - but those who do not agree with your philosophy should have the ability to make their own choice.
.

A bought a lab puppy from them 3 weeks ago and had no issues what so ever. However, I must say I was a little reluctant at first after reading past reviews of Pets Galore. So I went to the store twice to checks things out before I decided on my new puppy. The staff was courteous, the place was clean, and all the animals were feed, watered and looked to be in good health. I'm not sure where the stories of sick animals have come from but I did an little investigative work and it seems that there was some kind of management change that happened there about a 1 1/2 years ago so that may explain it.

As a dog trainer, I am very conscious of how dogs are treated. I have spent many hours at Pets Galore training dogs and interacting with the staff. Puppies at Pets Galore receive a lot of personal attention and TLC that they would not get anywhere else. They are well socialized with people and other animals. The puppies are taken out of their pens multiple times a day to get the exercise needed to keep them healthy. Pets Galore is a wonderful place to visit - and to buy a pet!

I purchased my Golden Retriever from this store in 2006 and right now we are considering a second doggie. My kids and I can't wait to get back there to pick out another little loving puppy. We love how you can can reach right over and pet them and then take them to the play area if there is more interest. How else will you be able to see how the dog responds, if its playful ect. Other places they are behind small glass cages and you have to wait for ever for someone to come with a key to unlock them, to stand there with you probably tapping their foot waiting for you to decide if your buying or not so they can then LOCK them back up! How awful is that!? Pets Galore has a great selection of dogs also. Gives you lots to choose from. We will be seeing you all soon to bring home our second dog from your store! Cant Wait!

I purchased a Yellow Lab the beginning of January 09 and what a wonderful little guy. Reading all the bad reviews is no reason not to visit the store. Off course, this aroused my interest to visit. There is a difference walking in a pet store where the animals are in single cages and behind glass. Would you smell all of the odors? I don't think so! When your animal does their business does it smell? If not, I quess they release roses! Do you? The puppies are not alone and are in the open and have room to romp. In the past I have purchased puppies from private owners and have found it doesn't matter where they are purchased as far a health issues. I owned a Yorkie purchased (many many years ago) from a private owner and he ended up having heart problems. I have a basset hound (now 10 years old) purchased from a breeder in Pennsylvania, who is in good health. If you read about the breed of dog you choose to purchase you will find the health issues they can encounter in the future. Hopefully they don't. Is the private pet owner or pet store the one to blame? I would say it has to do with genetics. Now, talking about price for a puppy. My yorkie cost $350.00 twenty-one years ago, my basset hound $600.00 ten years ago. Checking the newspaper and on-line for yellow labs Pets Galore was no way expensive in comparison. The woman who helped us was very friendly. I have no negative words to say about the customer service I received. Anyone knows you can find bad service at anytime in any working environment. I have called the pet store to ask about the training classes they offer, at a reasonable price, which myself and my new lab will be attending.

Thanks! Thank you so much. Usually people who are unhappy or are a competitor take the time to write. I thank you for you comments. Being in a small town with 2 Pet Smarts, 2 Wal Marts and now a Petco it is very hard for a small company to survive. We appreciate the support of all our customers.

This store is a disgrace and has always been since it's inception. I have been visiting(not patronizing) this store for many years and am absolutely floored by the incompetence and lenience of AACO animal control. With each change of ownership and management it's tradition of neglect and abuse, as well incredibly low standards are passed on.

I rescued a puppy from this store years ago because she had an open wound on her head( I paid cost and not a cent more). She was still housed with other puppies that were licking and chewing at the the wound, no doubt causing it to grow and become worse. The odor from the lesion was absolutely rank. But with the most modest care it healed quickly. Care that the staff could have easily provided if they actually cared about the well being of these animals.

I have been in their back room, I have seen the puppies on deaths door step from neglect. I have seen the piles of dead reptiles in cages and the wounds on small animals that are housed together despite the fact that they fight. Oh, and the guinea pigs that are all housed together. Males and females alike. Females large with babies, previous litters pregnant with their brothers and fathers offspring, females bred back to back destroying their bodies. Not to mention the percentage of puppies with kennel cough and the inadequate enclosures for the majority of their reptiles.

Those who have given positive reviews must be oblivious to the basic needs of animals. You may have lucked out and managed to buy the only healthy puppy in that store. But turning a blind eye to the remaining animals that you left behind certainly doesn't help potential customers or the animals that are victims of their horrible circumstances.

This store needs to be shut down!!!!

Response from this business:

What can I say? The only thing I can say is that your statements are outrageous. "Piles of dead reptiles in cages"? Pretty unbelievable. We would not still be in business if this was the case. We are inspected regularly by the Health Department, Animal Control and DNR - and if your accusations were true we would have been out of business years ago. Believe me there are so many animal rights groups that they would have made sure of it.

I bought a black lab pup there last week. It is a very clean store, with very friendly personell. I took the puppy to my Vet last night, and i showed him the pup's so called "shot record", and the vet said, this does not look right. He said that something is wierd about that, and he doesn't trust it. He's starting my puppy on his first set of shots this Friday.

I just called the store to see what the "vet's" name was who gave my dog his shots, and she said "um, the shots are given to the dogs personally by us". I dont know, is that illegal for someone who is not a trained Vet/vet tech to give an animal shots? Other than that, it was a very friendly atmosphere. I would not recomment paying that much money for a dog that is "registered", and has it's first set of "shots" though.

Response from this business:

Thanks for your comments. It is not illegal for someone - us, breeder or owner - to give their own immunization shots. They can be purchased locally at the Farmer's Coop store or online. Many vets in the area use this reasoning as an excuse to start the entire shot process over and charging an office visit and for the shot - usually between $35 - $50 each time. The shot can be purchased for $3.50. Shots protect the puppies which is what we are about - but also from a business side protects our investment. We have absolutely no motivation to not protect the puppy and give it a $3.50 shot ..... but vets have huge monetary motivation into scaring you to start all over with the shots.

ive veiwed many aspects from all angles and points. this place is worthless. everything they have is cheaper anywhere else and they mark everything up 2.5 times face value to fill there greedy pockets. they DO get their puppies from puppy mills the name zimmerman on most the registraition papers proves that fact. some time ago in people magazine there was an artical bout the breeder zimmerman killing an amount of puppies on his farm. same name as whats on many peoples papers.. i was recently forced out of my job at pets galore in a very unfriendly way and it was just completly childish. they dont pay there employees time and a half for anything over 40 hours, which is illegal. the store is filthy. the reptile section is ok compared to others but the reptile manager (former fishboy from house of tropicals) is never tending to the reptiles.i dont recommend this place to anybody.

Another ex-employee. I guess employees that get fired all feel the need to go online and seek their revenge. Of course some things are cheaper at Walmart --- aren't they cheaper than everybody! lol That is exactly why most small independent stores are forced out of business. As far as the article - Zimmerman is as commom a name in PA as Smith or Brown .... you should reread the article again and you would see they have nothing to do with Pets Galore.

I don't want to give them any stars. I got my shitzu for Valentine's Day in 2005 and I do a very good job of taking care of him. Despite my efforts, he was dealt a bad hand from the begining. He was born crossed-eyed and jittery. He has seizures. On top of that, he's had four surgeries in 8 weeks due to a rectal prolapse. It's heartbreaking. He's so young and he has to go through so much. The people at Pets Galore are not interested in the well being of the pets they sell. There are merely interested in profit.

So sorry to hear about your puppy. Unfortunately when you are dealing with living animals you cannot guarantee the future. You bought a puppy 4 years ago and it is a shame that it has had such medical issues but there is no way we could have predicted the future for that puppy. All we can do is give a medical guarantee with each puppy for a reasonable about of time and make sure you don't incur any costs for something that might have been pre-existing. You obviously love your puppy and I am so happy it is owned by someone so caring and financially able to provide the care needed.

My husband and I purchased a saint bernard puppy from pets galore in august 2008. She is now 7 months old and is very healthy. Any time you purchase a puppy from a place where other people bring there dogs in and you have other puppies you are going to have puppies that get colds or kennel cough. This is not the pet stores fault nor the staff.Check with your vet, sometimes it just happens. We had a good experience with the store and the staff. I know in the past pets galore{just wingIn it]was a horrible pet store but they are under new management so just give them a chance. Our puppy is the most well behaved and sweetest dog we have ever owned.

Extremly satisfied customer of pets galore. Me and my boyfriend have 3 chihuahuas that we purchased from this store. Never once have I had a problem with this place like most of you speak of and i am a very frequent customer. They were all regestered and in the best of health. Now we have 6 chihuahuas because they had 3 puppies. Oh and i forgot to mention that i am a reptile breeder and i get all of my reptiles through pets galore. They arealways in the best of health and so much cheaper in price than any other place. Inow have well over 300 different kinds of reptiles from pets galore.
Okay... and my biggest pet peeve with everyones comments is about the smell. Letme put it in this perpesctive, when you use the restroom and flush the toilet when your done i can guaruntee that your bathroom still smells like poop! Same concept. when a puppy has a bowel movement the staff is right behind to clean it up. sorry it doesnt smell like flowers. This is the real world here.
This pet store uses play pins instead of cages where the puppies have no room to move except when they get their limited play time. Theyprovide a comfortable bedding 4 the pups to lay and play in. The water bowls are always fresh and as for the few that sometimes have pine in them observe the action of the puppies in the pin having fun running around playing and they accidently kick pine in the bowls. no way to prevent that but the staff again is right behind to clean up the mess.
Also their reptile department is different form any other. Unlike the leading competition they have many different reptiles for sale and whats not at the store usually they can order for you. If you are into exotic reptiles anything froma ball python to green tree pythons. They have it all and its healthy.
The biggest benefit of pets galore is that your are greatly accomodated all the way around. They have the best prices in every department.
I really hate all the negative things said about pets galore and back in the day it was something to talk about but now that they are under new managment with educated and experienced staff you shouldnt be able to do anything but make compliments. So take a look for yourself and i highly reccomend anyone to pets galore who wants to be satisfied with their purchases whether it be a puppy, a reptile, bird, or small animal.
please if you have any comments to my posting whether they be positive or negative feel free to email me, diamondintherough1@tmail.com

Extremly satisfied customer of pets galore. Me and my boyfriend have 3 chihuahuas that we purchased from this store. Never once have I had a problem with this place like most of you speak of and i am a very frequent customer. They were all regestered and in the best of health. Response from this business:

You are awesome! What a realist! I love your attitude and the way you look at things. You really put things in perspective. Thanks very very much!
.

I bought a puppy at Pets Galore and it is the most social, friendly dog I have ever owned. They do not keep their puppies in cages - which I Love! Anyone complaining about the soft pine they have in their pens in ridiculous - would you rather see them in cages by themselves or on grates!

Everyone can reach down and pet the puppies which is why they are so friendly.

Complain about the smell - gee what would you house smell like if you had 50 or 60 puppies in there? It's ridiculous to think there would be no smell whatsoever but believe me- it does NOT hit you in the face. I saw the staff cleaning and scooping constantly.

Anyway - just tired of only negative showing up on these websites. No pet store is perfect but this is the closest I have seen.

Response from this business:

Thanks very much! You and I obviously have the same philosophy about cages and puppies. Puppies need to eat together, play togegether and sleep on top of each other! Thanks for your comments.

Unbelievable!! The Disgusting smell hits you before you get through the first door. Dogs and wood chips is a deadly combination. There are reptiles large enough and deadly enough to eat these babies if they ever get loose. The food and water bowls get filled withWood chips and the poor pups cannot eat without ingesting the wood. The way they have their pups displayed is horrible...causes fear in smaller pups that cannot get away from the more agressive ones...I saw the fighting and no one in the store cared one bit to see what was going one. A customer actually reached over and saved the little fellow from horrible beating of a larger pup. If their friends are the Amish in PA, then they are right to say they buy off of friends and family. Look at the breeders on the papers before you purchase. If you do not get papers at the time of purchase, walk away...you will never get them after you walk out of that store. There are many other places to get sweet pups...check out other places before you stoop to this place.

Response from this business:

I know who you are - lol Of course people who buy puppies with AKC or ACA papers receive their papers. (We don't use the fake companies like American Pet Registry - lol). Of course we don't let puppies beat up each other. And of course the pine sometimes gets in the water. But the last line gave you away .... I know exactly which pet store wrote this and is trying to turn people off and go to their store! lol lol
.

This pet store is awful. The smell hits you as soon as you walk in the door; the stench is oppressive. The puppies may be kept in open pens so they have room to play and they are not lonely (more than two puppies to a pen), but they are sick and not taken care of in an acceptable manner. You simply have to look at the puppies to see that they are sick -- the signs are obvious in their eyes (weepy and watery and red), ears (signs of mites and soreness), and nose (runny and crusted).

Also, while it may seem ideal to keep puppies housed together (so they are not lonely), in fact, it causes bad behavior due to no supervision whatsoever and the smaller pup(s) in the group gets bullied and hurt on a daily basis. Since they tend to house different sized breeds together, this can be a real problem. Plus, anyone and everyone can reach in and touch the pups spreading disease from one pen to another and children can reach in and pull tails, fur, ears and anything else they can grab onto.

The puppies are overpriced and must come from disreputable breeders and puppy mills. And on top of it all, the store knowingly sells sick puppies (and kittens when ??in stock?). The only recourse to purchasing a sick pup is to allow them to treat it (most likely by store personnel and not by a vet) or a refund, in which case the puppy is probably either euthanized or simply resold. I hate to think of the alternatives they have to try and recoup the money they lost on a sick puppy. But I am sure that sick pups who are brought in for a refund do not fair well at this store.

This store should have been shut down some time ago and while it recently changed management (though the employees are mostly the same), I am very surprised it has remained open at all.

Response from this business:

This is unbelievable! You and I will never agree that keeping puppies together rather than in cages causes bad behavior. And you know what - sometimes people reaching in and petting the puppies sometimes can spread disease - I agree with you there - but the alternative of keeping them in cages or behind glass alone and depressed is much worse to me. Children cannot reach into the pens - the sides are almost 4 feet tall. Puppies getting beat up ... Come on - do you really think we keep shepherds and yorkies together? Do you really think we want puppies to get hurt? And your disgusting comment about what "we do with the sick puppies" makes me ill. We work with local vets all approved by Animal Control. The slander in this review is beyond my belief.
.

I have been in many pet stores where depressed puppies are kept by themselves and in cages where nobody can touch them unless you look like you have money and a clerk will go get one for you. I have been to pet stores that try to be cute and put puppies in ridiculous bassinets treating them like babies but all that happens is that the puppies are sitting in poop in these things. I bought my sheltie from Pets Galore because they don't use cages or puppy mills. They have these pens with soft pine on the floor and the puppies can eat together, play together and I can reach down and pet the puppies. These puppies are very friendly because they get lots of attention from everyone. I am sure that every single pet store and breeder sometimes get sick puppies but I get tired of all the negative stuff always showing up on these sites and decided to take the time to tell the other side.

Well not even 2 days later the coughing had gotten worse and his breathing was so shallow,k at 4:30am on Monday morning my puppy staring coughing up RED STUFF (THEY WON'T LET ME PUBLISH THE REAL WORD ON THIS REVIEW), I immediately tried to contact the store owner which took about 2 hours to reach so you can already see her sleep in time is more important than the animals she so called "cares" for. We tell him everyday when we visit just how much we love him and I thank GOD EVERYDAY for letting us rescue him from this dirt hole. Our vet bill is outrageous and lucky for us we have the money, but could you imagine if we were less fortunate our dog would have died? DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE. Oh and on top of that no one from Pets Galore not even the piece of CRUD owner even called to see if he was okay.

Pros: NOTHING

Cons: EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE

.

My brother and I used to work here at Pets Galore and to be totally honest with you I think thats when the place was cleaner and the animals were happier, you see we didnt work there just for a paycheck we worked there out of love for animals, my brother is a big time reptile lover and I absolutely love birds especially parrots, cockatoos and macaws, in fact I used to handfeed the babybirds we had. My brother worked his fulltime job as a forklift mechanic and in the evenings would work at Pets Galore, mostly because of his love for animals. I admit I don't know everything about birds but I do have a 39yr old parrot that I have had for 22yrs so I must know something. I wouldn't mind working there again, Its a good way to support my family and be happy with my work at the same time... Thanks

Pros: puppies playing together uncaged

Cons: messy

I started going to this store after my long time dog passed away. I liked it because all of the puppies were out and together and you could play with them easily without having to take them out of a cage. But after going a few times, I noticed the same thing as everyone else-this place is TERRIBLE. The older lady and guy that work there are what I'd consider to be "white trash" and they don't care about those dogs at all. Most of the dogs are sick or rolling around in their own waste and it's disgusting. We called animal control on them once because they had a dog in there, just running around-that BIT MY BOYFRIEND. what kind of place allows that? We tried to just look at a cock-a-poo with no price, and they poor young girl that worked there told us that it was from a puppy mill, and that it was a "free puppy" since they bought in "bulk"...only they wanted to charge us $350 for the "free dog" that looked too sick to go home.
Needless to say, I will never go back to that place--the conditions for the animals are terrible-they may be able to play together but they are all getting each other sick, the dogs are NOT cared for properly, the customer service is the worst and the place is just shady. I hope to god that someone has some common sense and shuts that place down...
DO NOT GO HERE.

Message from Pets Galore

We truly under new management - please check us out! We do not believe in keeping puppies in cages. Even though the labor cost is huge, I will never keep puppies in cages or behind glass where no one can pet them. Puppies need to be held and loved - and with our customers always petting them, they get what they need. Our reptile section is immaculate and we have the biggest variety of reptiles and supplies you will find in the area. We care about our customers!
