Akbar Restaurant is Divine

by Forrest P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,303

Of all the Indian places I have been to, this one takes the cake for having the most extensive menu. The service, like a lot of Columbia Indian places is great, and the food is pretty good. I like their soups, something that not all Indian places have. Get some naan and some Malek Paneer for a toe tappingly delicious meal.

Good for both newbies and natives

by Lisa D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,495

It's reassuring to go into an ethnic restaurant and see lots of "natives" eating there. Not only will you see lots of natives at Akbar, chances are some of them have traveled a good distance to be there!

Akbar is also a good place for newbies to Indian cuisine -- they have a lunch buffet 7 days a week, so you can try a little of this and a little of that to see what you like. Most days, there are 3 meat dishes and at least 3 vegetarian dishes to choose from, plus bread, rice, condiments and dessert. Be sure to take some yogurt sauce -- put it in a dessert cup if you need to -- in case you come upon a dish that's a bit too spicy for you. The yogurt sauce will help put out the fire. A lassi (yogurt drink, must be ordered from the menu) would serve the same purpose as well. If you find the food not spicy enough, you can request some hot oil. Use it sparingly -- when they say it's hot, they're not kidding!

To accompany your meal, you can have an Indian beer, or some delicious subtlely-flavored tea (served hot or cold, your choice). They have soft drinks too... but if you're going ethnic, why not go all out?

Regular sit-down dinners are available in the evenings. Catering and carry-out are also available.

Even as I've gotten more familiar with Indian cuisine and tried other places, I keep coming back to Akbar because the food is just better!
