I have been a student at this school for a long time. This school is truly a 5 star school, likely the best in the state of Maine for what is considered "Classical" martial arts training. Based on my experience (this is my rating) "Classical" training focuses on the development of body, mind and spirit, which has consistently proven to yield practical self-defense skills. Students are encouraged to participate in competition. It can be a good evaluative tool and it is always fun to network with other practitioners. Training for competitive "performance" is not a priority in this school, which is why I give the school a 5 star rating. Historically, Martial Arts and Karate have been very specific translations with very particular meanings. Unfortunately they have become generic terms. That doesn't help people to differentiate when they are trying to decide what they actually want. This is also a 5 star school for helping to educate the public about the differences amongst available programs. The head instructor (dojo-cho) is a 5 star instructor who has earned the highest level teaching license available for someone of his rank. Because of his 37 + years of dedication to the organization and teaching of his art, he has earned the title of Shihan (master). Over the years he has taken the time to research and understand all of the significant styles of both Martial Arts and Martial sports and he has practical experience in multiple Martial Arts styles.
If you are lookingng for a style of karate-do (way of the empty hand) that maintains and teaches, with integrity, from the roots of it's Chinese and Okinawan ancestry, this school is definately worth the investment. If you sincerely want to develop the kind of healthy confidence that doesn't just blow hot air into your ego you need not look any further.
You will find that every member of the school s a 5 star human being, willing to invest in themselves in order to become strong, capable, and sound of judgement. That is ultimately the best self-defense strategy. Self-defense is serious business and in the Kishintaikan Dojo it's potential is taught responsibly and with great respect. That is a 5 star Martial Arts attitude.
