I take my pets to DMVC, and I'm very happy with Dr. Spahn. I think he is a very caring and compassanate person and one of the best. But I didn't always think this of this clinic. Years ago I lost a pet at the clinic and I felt that it could have been prevented, so I changed vets and now I'm back there and I am very happy with the care my pet gets. But we must remember that these vets are people just like you and I and they can make mistakes and errors, unfortunately it was not alway easy for me to look at it that way, but don't forget another thing is there is more than one vet at that clinic and some are better than others and you can request who you would like to see. And a word to the wise, the more experience the better. They have been around alot longer and have seen the problem or problems that your pet has, and also treated it with different meds so he should know with years of experience which is the best route to take. But if I was not satified with my pets care, I would never wait again and just be told that the meds need time to work,I would go to another clinic before I lost another pet. But I absolutely love them at DMVC this time around and would not go anywhere else.

I have a shar pei that goes without saying has ear problems as many shar peis are born with small ear canals and ears that allow little air to circulate. He had cronic ear infections. I was constantly at the vet. My vet tried so many antibiotics and did finally cure him only to have an infection with in a few weeks. I tried Dr. Spahn. He recommended that he put him under and deep ear cleaning, then treat. He had this done more than 1 year and a half ago and has had nothing more than a little yeast that is easily treatable with ear wash and Animax.

My thanks to Dr. Spahn that has spared my dog the misery of reoccuring ear infections.

Down Maine Vets have been good to me and my animals for over 30 years.
Dr. Spahn is one of the best. He is good at diagnosing and is kind.
Their prices are about the same as other vets in the area.
They are on call 24/7 for their customers.

I have been taking my pets to Down Maine Vet for several years but had never felt comfortable with them. My 8 month old puppy was diagnosed with a salivary gland infection and placed on antibiotics. After a few weeks he continued to worsen and we became very concerned. My husband and I felt the Vet was not listening to us and we knew there was something wrong. We were told the infection couldn't have gone to his brain and that his wobbly gait and lethargy was because of the infection. We were told several times that he just needed to rest. He was scheduled to have his second exam under anesthesia to flush out the salivary gland. He was so weak that I had to carry him into the office. I was assured he would be fine and could handle the medicine. That night, my husband and I picked him up and he looked even worse. We were again told he would be fine and that, once again, he just needed to rest. At home he became increasingly uncomfortable and would not stop whimpering. He held his neck in an arched back position. I called the Vet and he was very short with me. He told me he couldn't think of ANY reason why our puppy would have become worse. He gave me the impression I was wasting his time. We decided to let our puppy sleep and we would take him to a different Vet the next day if he hadn't improved. Our sweet puppy stopped breathing at 2 a.m. My husband frantically called the Vet. He asked if we were sure the puppy wasn't breathing. We brought our puppy to the emergency clinic in Portsmouth but it was too late. The next day we confronted the Vet and he finally agreed the infection could have gone to his brain. This was such a traumatic and painful experience for my husband and I. We are constantly wondering what would have happened if we had taken our puppy to another Vet. Since our loss we have talked to several people who have been unhappy with the treatment the Vets at DMV provide.

The quality of care that my pet received at Down Maine actually brought me to tears. The "simple" surgery that was performed can only be described as hack job. Upon arriving home and getting to inspect my pet I saw that the wounds were actually completely open and bleeding excessively. The incisions were sloppy to say the least and the closures were inadequate. This obviously involved a trip back to the vet for a touch up to the surgery. When I picked up my pet the second time I voiced my concerns (calmly at first) I was pretty much called ignorant and a liar. This upset me very much and I couldn't understand how the vet could consider the first round of care satisfactory. The vet argued with me for more than 20 minutes and refused to aknowledge the lack of quality care. I asked that they modify the bill to take care of the 2nd round of closures and anesthesia since none of this would have been required if the procedure had been done properly the first time but the vet absolutely refused and told me they had already given me a "complimentary exam" when I brought him back. Don't get me wrong- it's really not about the money, it's more about the principle. I wanted them to admit that they had not provided acceptable care. Needless to say, I will never return to Down Maine in Sanford and encourage everyone else to take their animals elsewhere as well.

This vet, I would call one of the worst vets I have ever been to, and I am a breeder I have been to a lot of vets. The facilities were fair-poor, and the vets were not supportive to say the least. I would not recommend this vet to anyone for anything!!!
