Every time I return to New England from my current home in St. Louis I make a point to go to Cacao. Once I brought a Parisian friend who agreed he'd never tasted better chocolate, even in Paris. Unusual and conventional flavors, fresh as can be, and the owner is so passionate about her wares. She always has an interesting anecdote, such as the head chocolatier of Lindt dropping in for a visit. Kids enjoy it and learn something too! My favorites are the dark chocolate caramels topped with sea salt, and the chili-infused truffles. The chocolate bars bear no resemblance to Hershey's. Every bite invokes an exclamation of delight!

I'm not the only one who recognizes how amazing Julie's skills are as a chocolatier. The owner works backwards. She invents a new chocolate, tastes it, and works backwards to perfection.
There you can find chocolates filled with cardamom, gorgonzola, chive, juniper, and things that you wouldn't imagine and aren't in recipe books.

Pros: outstanding quality, price

I lived in Portsmouth six years ago and discovered Cacao when I was pregnant with my first child. (I am now going on my third.) I LIVED on the chocolate covered cranberries and cacao nibs. Try the dark chocolate truffles with chiles, too die for! I used her chocolates for every gift imaginable and I just loved going in and sampling and talking to her. She is doing something she passionate about, considering she left her very lucrative former life of divorce lawyer. They always say to do something you love and I can't think of a more perfect and perfectly delicious example.
