I first looked into Munster Abbey Kennel about a dozen years ago after having two unsatisfactory experiences with Sukee Kennel, a German Shepherd breeder in Warren, Maine that was more widely known at the time (one pup put down at 5 months with hip dysplasia, his replacement's ears didn't stand). From my first discussions with them Larry and Donna Doyon at Munster Abbey impressed me with both their knowledge of the breed and their commitment to breeding only the best of the breed. Their studs and dams were awesome as was their facility. Each adult dog they brought out to show me acted like he was their only family pet, and it was clear that they showered their dogs with attention. Nearly ten years ago, after searching quite extensively, I bought a pair of puppies, brother and sister, from Munster Abbey. They were my 8th and 9th German Shepherds, but I can honestly say they were the best dogs I ever owned. My beloved female Xena developed a tumor in her abdomen a few months ago which then ruptured and she tragically had to be put down. Her brother Ajax is still my constant and loyal companion and, in my humble opinion, the smartest, most beautiful German Shepherd ever! He is nearly ten years old, but still enjoys a mile of running and tennis ball chasing every day. The Doyons knew that I wanted a dog who wanted to be played with and roughhoused with, and whose tempermant was suited to having friends and family, including kids, stopping by my house. They also had to respect that our two cats and dozen laying hens were their family too and not game to be chased. Their recommendations for the litter I should consider choosing from, based on their knowledge of their parents' traits, was dead on. I picked them up on a Sunday at 8 weeks old, and we started obedience class the very next day. They were stars in their class and have been obedient, off leash walkers their whole lives. I have spent the past several months wondering whether Ajax would appreciate having a pup around to play with, because he is so playful even at his age, or whether the high energy of a pup would not be his cup of tea. While I still am mulling that over, there is no issue about where I will go for my next dog, no matter if I do it now or wait until my Ajax is finally passed on. I will never buy a dog anywhere else! I cannot give Larry and Donna Doyon and their Munster Abbey Kennels high enough accolades. Go there and you will not be disappointed with your dog.
