Beware! If your child is already within the CDS system or is about it enter it: In the Spring of 2006, due to extensive budget cuts, CDS will be implementing a new model of service known as "Primary Provider". Those of you who are currently receiving mutiple therapies or services from a variety of professionals will NO LONGER be able to receive these services!!! You will have to choose one single provider as the primary one and others will only be permitted to consult with that provider. What this means in practical terms is: If your child needs physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and developmental therapy, you will be forced to choose just ONE of those therapies. So you will be put in a position where you must decide whether you want your child to learn to walk, draw, speak, or read and write... This terrible new plan is a result of enormous budget cuts. CDS is touting it as a "new model" but do NOT be fooled! Their "less is more" mantra is absolute nonsense. Less is always less! Those of you who have MaineCare and/or private insurance will be much better off going through your own providers and bypassing the CDS system altogether. Please be wary of anyone attemting to convince you that your child only needs one form of therapy at a time and that the physical therapist can address speech goals after a half hour phone consultation with her collegue or vice versa. They are setting themselves up for massive lawsuits, not to mention a crisis in the school system when these untreated children enter Kindergarten. CDS is advertizing their so called "new model" as being a cutting edge form of therapy. They are using buzz words like "coaching" and "primary provider." They are modeling this on a system already implemented in Virginia and will be only too happy to tell you about how wonderful that system is. However, do not be fooled! Maine's children outperform Virginia's in every single nationwide standardized test!!! But not for long, sadly!...

At the time my son was two I as a parent had some concerns so my doc referred us to CDS. We had an evaluation done and they thought he needed to have speech therapy.. I couldn't believe at the age of two they could pick this up, however they being the educated ones I chose to go along with their feelings..I would take him in once a week and everything was great....The therapist lady was great and he really liked her. AFter some time went by I was no longer to take him and they actually said they could send a lady out to my house one day a week.. I was like okay... She came maybe three times and i could tell by her attitude that she was a very impatient person... My son who was only two would sometimes get ansy pansy and she grabbed his arm and pulled him into his chair and basically went to far in my opinion... I let her finish that session but would not let her return.

Like I said I have mixed feelings on this place, they are kind of a go between place to get your child the help s/he needs. I wasn't too thrilled with my son's screening for various reasons. Then I still had to talk to my doctor about making a referral for some things CDS could have referred for, but chose not to. On the flip side of the coin the therapists they employ to work your child are very good & knowledgeable. Though it seems to take awhile for the evals. to happen; you'd think this would be priority with a developmentally delayed child. Maybe it's out of there control.
