If you are thinking of changing daycare, do it now!
We finally decided to transfer our daughter to a different daycare center, after a year dealing with the worst management of Heidis House.
First impressions: a clean and well decorated place with lots of toys, books and a medium-sized fish tank displayed in the lobby (my daughter loved it.)
BUTdont let first impressions fool you.
First, they have an insane sick policy. When my daughter started teething, she was acting irritable (teehers and ice cubes did not help.) Our pediatrician recommended giving her some acetaminophen to ease her pain. However, Heidis refuse giving her the medicine. They also asked us not to give her any acetaminophen before drop-off time. The reason why? It may cover up the symptoms of other sicknesscold, fever, ear infection etc. Another time, when my daughter had her first bite of an orange in her life, the sourness made her throwing up. This incident happened during dinner time, after that she was fine and happy. The next day, my husband told the teacher not to give her any sour fruits because it may cause her vomiting. Guess what? They asked my husband to take her home! Because there is a 24-hour non-vomiting policy?!
Second, dont try to disagree with them. Disagreement with the management will lead to a total mistreatment of your child. One day, I got a call from Heidis, apparently our daughter had a biting incident. She bit one of the children and attempted to bite another. We feel extremely bad for the child who has been bitten and really made effort to correct our daughters behavior. However, she had yet another biting incident soon after. During the parent-teacher meeting, Heidi told us if it happens one more time, our daughter will be suspended from the daycare. We took it very seriously and consulted with our pediatrician and dentist trying to find out the reason of her biting behavior. Surprisingly, both doctors were not concerned AT ALL. They told us it is a typical child behavior; they will grow out of this. Also, they mentioned some children may bite, just because they are bored. After bring our doctors opinion to the management and suggesting to keep children more active, that was when the mistreatment starts. They separated our daughter from the group; she was not allowed to eat with other children. When other children were eating around the table, she was eating along on a high chair. The worst thing is that THEY DID NOT TELL US ABOUT IT. I had no idea about the whole separating treatment, until one of the moms curiously asked me: why your daughter always sits on a high chair? When asked Heidi why they doing this to her, she said it was to avoid her biting another kid!!
We are now in a different daycare, and my daughter had NO biting incident at all. She is happy and active. The management and teachers are very reasonable, and easy to communicate with. The quality of the education system is excellent. The most important thing is that they do teach SCIENCE, unlike Heidis: "we are focusing on teaching social skills not academic studies." The people really need to learn social skills are Heidi and her management team.

My child has attended Heidi's House for 2 years and I have been extremely happy with the care she has received. I have been impressed with the care and commitment of the staff and administration. The teachers are very well educated and many are parents themselves.

I have found all the administration very well educated in childhood education. The directors care about the children, and will often ask how my daughter is, if she is out sick. I have found Heidi to be very welcoming. She will always take time to stop and talk to me in the halls. I feel she truly enjoys engaging with children and parents. The administration and teachers always welcome my phone calls and make me feel very connected to what goes on during the day.

I always recommend Heidi's House to everyone, and have colleagues whose children also attend. My daughter enjoys going and is excited to go and see her friends and teachers. I feel very confident that my daughter is happy and well looked after; she will be continuing at Heidi's House through preschool. We looked around, did our research, and definitely feel this place is the best!

First the good: Heidi's House is clean and well appointed. The child care is adequate, but is influenced by the administration.

The bad: After a mind numbing year at Heidi's, my best characterization is that it's run like a banana republic. There is an overarching social agenda that permeates the facility. It's a curious mix of radical political correctness, social engineering, with a touch of the latest internet driven hysteria, all delivered in undecipherable edu-speak.

Although mostly tolerable, the supercillious and condecending tone does wear on you. Push back, and you end up on the fecal list, which then spills over into the care your child receives or, more correctly, doesn't receive.

There is also an Orwellian atmosphere - some teachers regularly "tattle" for transgresssions real or imagined. Others, just keep their head down and hope to not get caught in the fray. Just hope your kid isn't cared for by one of the Heidi clique.

So, if you're organic, gluten free, and think CMP smart meters are turning your brain to jello, this might be the place for you. On the other hand, if you live in the grown up world and don't appreciate walking on eggshells and being lectured to by a pompous administration that plays fast and loose with facts, there are better choices out there.

I have been an educator for fifteen years and I have never seen a better organized and highly qualified child care center as Heidi??s House Child Care Center in Scarborough, Maine.
My daughters have attended Heidi??s House Child Care Center for 3+ years. Over the years, I have seen many, many exemplary actions that make Heidi??s House a world class child care center. I have seen ALL the staff working together to support the student??s success, promote each others success, and the center as a whole. I have seen the colorful, energetic and student centered academic work. I have seen the high scope curriculum in action. Thank you Heidi??s House, you are just incredible everyday ! (The folks that have written negative comments here must be going into the wrong building)

Heidi's house facility, to start off, is big, beautiful, and full of interesting things for children to see and do. Their many playgrounds are completely age-appropriate and full of very different things to see. On the largest playground there is a gated pond where the children can view wildlife, a garden where they can eat fresh chives, fairy village, and several playscapes, swings, and blacktop areas. Inside, the facility is extremely clean and the atmosphere friendly. Each staff greets parents by name, and upon not knowing their name, introduces themselves. The staff move throughout the facility, and know all of the children. Here, it doesn't matter what room the child is in, because each staff member takes the time to get to know everyone who comes through the doors. The entire Heidi's house team of caregivers is professional, kind, and there for the children.

With all of that being said, I have noticed some of the things mentioned in previous reviews over the last couple of years. The turnover rate has been very high. Teachers do come in and out. There have also been a lot of teachers leaving, who have been at Heidi's house for many years. Gossip does get around, even about staff problems, as some of the staff are friends with parents outside of Heidi's house because they have children who attend the facility and are the same age.

It is to my understanding that many of the issues started when a caring co-director left suddenly this past winter. She seemed to be a buffer between several of the more controlling uppers. Part of the reason why turnover is high, is because it is an in-between job for many of these young men and women. It is a job after college that prepares them for something more.

Even though there is a large turnover rate, this has never become an issue in the quality of care my two children have received from the staff. Every morning when I enter the building, they are there, and every night when I leave, they are STILL there working hard. Most are there from 7:30/8 until we pick up at 5:30! That's a long day. At the end of the night, my husband and I have commented on how quick the crew is to start cleaning the facility. These workers run around with laundry baskets and scrub windowsills, all the while still stopping and commenting on something funny my children did that day.

I have heard Heidi speak to members of the staff in a brash way, and have heard mentions of bullying throughout the facility. It seems that many are intimidated by her. I have seen her pull staff into her office and then send them out teary-eyed in front of parents, children, and their peers. This also may be a cause of high turnover!

Needless to say, the teachers are so professional and I applaud them in all they do. If the administration could get it together, Heidi's House would certainly be the best childcare facility in the area.

My son is a year and a half and has been attending Heidi's House for about 3 months now. I couldn't be happier with the great strides he has taken in such a short amount of time. I attribute his success to the caring and nurturing staff (including his amazing teacher, Sarah). Whether dropping him off in the AM or picking him up in the PM, I can't leave Heidi's House without at least 3-4 staff members saying goodbye to me and my son (calling us both by name!!). As an educator myself, I "tip my hat" to all the teachers at Heidi's House. I know my son is going to owe them all a debt of gratitude for the young man he'll soon become...

My daughter, 4, has been attending Heidi's House for just over a year now and I am continually amazed at the dedication, knowledge and caring from each and every staff member I have ever talked with or seen with my daughter. Prior to enrolling, we looked at seven (!) daycares before choosing Heidi's House. Heidi's commitment not only to each and every child, which is amazing, but also to the development and growth of all of the staff is extraordinary and says so much about this center. My daughter has shown tremendous progress since starting in the preschool program at Heidi's House, and I feel it is such a nurturing place for her to learn and grow, that I am choosing to keep her there for an extra year before starting kindergarten, as she has a late August birthday. Such a great place where I can always feel confident my daughter is being well cared for.

Heidi's House gets childcare right in every way. Their approach to active learning is top notch with a perfect combination of structured and free play. The infants are allowed to be on their own schedule, as each infant is, which is reassuring that your baby is getting what he or she needs when they need it, not when the teachers want to give it. After experiencing another daycare and visiting more, this is the place to be. My children (3 years and 4 1/2 months)only go 2 days a week but I have never felt less important or that my families needs are less significant than children who go full time. My 3 year old has always been excited to go and has made very strong bonds with her teachers. I know they are doing something right when she wants to go each and every day.

My husband and I have known Heidi for 11 years. In this time we have always known her to be dedicated to providing children with opportunities to learn in a warm and loving environment. This past summer our daughter attended the summer program at Heidi's House and it became obvious to us that Heidi's dedication towards children had spread to her staff. Heidi and her staff went above and beyond to plan an engaging and fun summer program. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed the time that she spent there over the summer and is looking forward to returning there next year!

You nailed it "RR C."! Heidi plays serious favoritism with certain parents. We spent 7 years there and Heidi still had to ask me what my first name was until the day we left. Thank god for certain caregivers who tended to the children.......they actually cared for them. Unfortunately, most (not all) of those caregivers have left. As far as the confidentiality issue, it is certainly an issue. The bathroom that parents are allowed to use have pictures of certain enrolled children who have medical conditions/allergies for emergency purposes.........looks like a HIPPA violation to me. Why in the bathroom? I have certainly seen the decline of this facility happen over the past few years due to the turnover of certain staff members who were there to keep children the #1 priority. A huge loss for the business. On a final interesting note, most current and prior parents have received two mass email from Heidi to comment on this specific website to describe our own personal thoughts because of negative comments that have been posted. Specifically pointing out the review of a certain grandparent. How sad it is for a business owner to personally recruit current and former clients begging for positive reviews. You wanted our personal, honest opinion, Heidi and I'm sorry to say this is how we feel......again, it's OUR opinion, please respect that.

I like Heidi's house so much. It is definitely a A+++ childcare center. My son has been attending there for almost 1 year and a half. I would like to say our decision on sending him there was quite right!!! All the teachers in Heidi's house are very well educated and professional. They love and really care about the kids. Heidi is such a wonderful leader. Tara has been doing such a good job too! They are really nice people and easy to get along with! I like both of them.
Thanks to Heidi for providing us such a good place to send our kid!!!

Heidi's House is an outstanding child care facility. Our two daughters have been going there for several years now and my husband and I continue to be amazed with the exceptional staff and directors. The minute you walk in the doors you feel at home. Heidi knows all the children's names and welcomes you and your children with a big smile. Our daughters are extremely comfortable there. A premier place to learn and grow! Highly recommend to any parent who cares where they place their children.

The Heidi's House facility is clean, air-conditioned, well lit and fully staffed by a bevy of bright-eyed 20-somethings. The perfect place to park your kids while you're at work right? Well, maybe.

I've had at least one child at Heidi's House for more than ten years, so my impressions are based on a longtime relationship with the business and its owners.

My experience with the caregiving staff has generally been positive. We have been particularly happy with the care and attention our kids received as infants and as very young children, although we experienced a high level of staff turnover. Don't be surprised when a caregiver, who has recently been introduced as a valued addition to the facility, vanishes abruptly with little warning or explanation.

As my children have grown older, I've noticed a gradual but definite decline in the quality of the services we have received from Heidi's House. My impression is that this deterioration has resulted from an institutional shift in values and priorities away from the needs of the children and their families and towards the needs of selected staff members and the owners.

In the halls outside of each room, you will see permanent displays featuring head shots, bios, and glowing testimonials of the caregivers. I suppose this is good for marketing the business to perspective new parents, but after a few weeks, the effect becomes disconcerting, as if you were being subjected to an endless series of commercials or propaganda reels, and the message strikes a sour note.

A truly troubling aspect of this culture is that gossip about parents and children travels very quickly among staff members. This may be a symptom of the crude understanding of parental confidentiality that I've observed in the behavior of the owners and a general lack of clear boundaries between social and professional relationships among some staff members.

Parents who are considering forming a relationship with Heidi's House should remember that they will be dealing with a private, for-profit entity with a warm fuzzy veneer. Resolution of any disagreements that you might have with Heidi's House will be made solely by the mother and daughter team who own and run the facility.

Keep in mind that Heidi??s House has no formal appeals process, no objective board of directors or even a parent advisory board to help mediate difference of opinion. The bottom line is that this place is HEIDI'S House, not your house or your child's house. Please don't make the mistake of thinking otherwise.

Parents should also be prepared to be hit with a substantial yearly ??application? fee and yearly summer program fees, which will make no sense to families who plan to use Heidi's House for long-term, year-around child care.

To summarize, Heidi's House looks good, has nice play areas and several committed caregivers. They know how to talk the latest childcare jargon. On the other hand, the culture there seems to have drifted away from child and family centered care and toward the care and maintenance of the egos of the owners and certain staff members, and you will find no satisfactory mechanism to resolve conflicts.

Heidi's House is a world class child care center. The misguided individual below (Jeffery G.) apparently has no idea how much Heidi and her staff care about the children AND their families. They go above and FAR beyond what is expected of any child care facility. Bravo Heidi and Staff, the work you do is exceptional!!!!

Our family has been attending Heidi's House for exactly 2 years next month. We have 2 boys that are ages 4 and 2 and we have been extremely happy with the care that they have received and more importantly my two boys are happy and excited to go to "school" each day. We had our oldest son enrolled in a different child care facilty up until he was age 2. We decided to take a tour of Heidi's House after one of our very close friends told us how happy they were with Heidi's House (which is where their infant daughter was attending). We were becoming unsatisfied with the teacher turn-over rate at our prior child care facility and decided that we were open to "looking" at another place but didn't intend for it to go beyond just looking. We were blown away with so many aspects of Heidi's House when compared to our prior facility (and the other facility is also a top-notch provider)! The quality of ALL of the teachers and staff at Heidi's House is phenomenal and they have all been with Heidi's House for YEARS which means that they are happy as employees. The facility is run like a well-oiled machine between the administrators in the office managing the class programs and when children rotate to the next classroom right down to the cleanliness of the facility. I have never once regretted moving to Heidi's House and have no intentions of ever looking at another child care facility. I always recommend Heidi's House to anyone who asks me for a recommendation for child care. It is a home away from home for your children and you have peace of mind leaving them in caring hands each day.

We moved our daughter to Heidi's House quite unexpectedly. Our daughter had become bored and frustrated at the childcare center she was attending and we were experiencing behavioral issues. A friend was moving her son to Heidi's House and encouraged us to visit. Are we glad we did! During the Moroccan Marketplace evening we attended, our daughter was engaged before she was formally enrolled. The transition which we felt might take a couple of weeks was smooth. We felt as if we were home within the first day or two!
Our daughter would come home every night excited to talk about the day and was clearly challenged and learning again. Whereas she had almost stopped talking at the other Center, we now had to ask her to slow down so we could hear everything she wanted to share.
The educational program in place is well thought out and exposes to children to the world around them...both locally and worldwide. As a parent, I felt that we were part of a community which worked together to ensure that all of our children flourish.
Now that my daughter has entered kindergarten, I can see how well prepared she was for this big step. We trust Heidi's House enough to send her back during school breaks and highly recommend it to everyone we know!

My husband and I had twin boys who attended Heidi's House and we had nothing but GREAT reports every day they attended. The staff was friendly and ALWAYS put the kiddos first. The boys met wonderful friends there and as they began their first days of kindergarten this week, they asked why they couldn't go back to Heidi's House. As well, expressed that they missed their 'buddies' from their classroom!!
Most importantly I could drop them off EVERY day and feel confident that they were both taken care of and would remain safe for the day. I mention safe, because one of our son's has diabetes and that meant that the staff at Heidi's House had to be trained and be able to care for him in a safe environment.
They all went ABOVE and BEYOND in caring for our boys!
Anytime I am around someone looking for quality daycare/school I ALWAYS recommend Heidi's House -

And lastly, I feel that our boy's are very prepared to begin their year of kindergarten - both socially and academically!

Much appreciate to all of the staff at Heid's House!

We could not have had a better experience at a daycare then we have had at Heidis House. We have been at Heidis House for the past 8 yrs . We have an 8 yr old and 5 yr old.
Every day that we pick up our children we ask, "How was your day and there is not a day that they both did not answer AWESOME"! How many places can you go where your most prized possesion can say that? I can call in once a day or three times a day to check on them and always be treated w/ upmost respect and dignity.
The teachers are so well educated, thoughtful and sincere. This daycare has become such a big part of our lives and the people over the last 8 yrs that it is like an extended family.
There is no daycare that measures up to the quality of care and staff as Heidis House.

As a parent of 3 young children who works full time as an attorney representing children in family matters and child protection actions, I have complete confidence and comfort knowing that my children are well cared for each day by highly competent teachers who are warm, attentive and stimulating. Having delevoped a good relationship with these teachers and staff over the past 5 years, I would recommend this child care center above all others.

I have 2 kids (ages 4.5 and 3) who have been attending Heidi's House since last November. After switching from another daycare, we were pleasantly surprised to see the different practices and policies that were in place to ensure the safety and overall well-being of the children. Most of those practices and policies are in place in order to comply with the NAEYC Accreditation, however both the administrators and the teachers go above and beyond those requirements.
I believe that the first question you should ask when you tour a daycare facility is "How is your teacher turnover rate?" That is a simple question and should be answered very easily. If there is a high rate of turnover, you should stay away from that place, as it's an indication of how the place is run. If the teachers are happy to be there, your kids will be happy. My daughter cries almost every time when it's time to pick her up.
Another important point is that the teachers observe every child on a daily basis on many aspects of their development and are wonderful at getting the parents involved in what is going on in the classroom, which is very important to me.
Last, but not least, their Conflict Resolution methods work incredibly teaching the kids how to communicate their thoughts and emotions in a kind and effective way.
Over the last several months, I have observed that Heidi has built a "House" for children as a result of a lot of work, care and dedication. She has a great team in place and they are there for the families. I would highly recommend Heidi's House.

I have had my two children at Heidi's House over the past 4 years and have every step of the way, at every developmental stage felt that both my cherished children and my husband and I were well cared for, every need and concern addressed. Heidi is in the business, but the business is doing a phenomenal job of care taking and educating. I am well versed in the education and childcare field and I have and will continue to rave about the service she and her teachers provide. I too fall into the category of having a unique or "minority" profile of a family and have never come across any form of disrespect or something less than inclusiveness ... I am sorry for your bad experience...

My family has been with Heidi's House since November 2003. It has been an amazing experience for both of my boys (now 7 and 4). Leaving your children with a caregiver is one of the most difficult things a working parent has to do. The fabulous teachers and administrators at Heidi's House made that so much easier knowing my little guys were in such capable, loving hands. I feel like our family is part of the HH family - it's a community where the parents & teachers work together for the good of every child in the center. I'm already somewhat saddened knowing that my youngest will graduate from HH next spring and I won't get to see some of my favorite people everyday. If anyone that reads this is currently looking for childcare - look no further. Heidi's House is where you'll want your children to be.

We moved to Maine recently and needed to find childcare for our 2 children. We found Heidi's House and immediately felt secure and rest assured that our kids were in the best care and guidance. Heidi's House provides a positive, happy and healthy environment for the children and the parents. The staff is unbelievably wonderful, attentive and nurturing. Our kids have benefitted greatly from being at Heidi's House every day. We are so appreciative for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to helping guide our future generations. Heidi is an amazing leader and thank you for having this facility for our children to go to.

Heidi's House is by far one of the best child care centers in greater Portland area. With Heidi's leadership and guidance, the teachers care for the children with love and positive attitude. Thanks to the wonderful teachers and management team we have no reservations about entrusting our daughters early education to Heidi's House. The classrooms are very clean and are all designed for the appropriate age group. Our daughter has been attending Heidi's House for almost two years now and we can't imagine her going anywhere else. Number of our friends moved their children from other day care centers to Heidi's House based on our high praises and they have not regretted their decision. Two thumbs up to Heidi's House!

Heidi's House is the child care center that other facilities could be rated against. Their high attention to quality shines through, from the wonderful, high-level individual and group care provided by teachers and administration to their behind-the-scenes communication and processes that provide a smooth environment for all. Our children have been at Heidi's House for a combined 10 years, and we've never considered going anywhere else!

I am a single mom who works full time so it was so important for me to find a child care option where he would be a part of a "village" of consistent and caring people for many of his waking hours. The child care business is a tough one, because the "product" is the most precious thing in the world, and the last thing any parent wants is to feel that their child's day is a walk on a diapering assembly line. Heidi and her family have dedicated their time to building a strong and positive staff with little turnover in the two years that my son has attended. They work hard at maintaining integrity in following both their structured curriculum and health and safety standards.

I have found the center to be extremely responsive to both my needs, and the needs of my son's temperament and development. The majority of teachers seem to have a sincere appreciation of every child's personality. On many days, he would be just as happy to stay there as come home.

I highly recommend Heidi's House to any parent! It is worth every penny.

As a first time Mom I really labored over where to take my child for day care. I was looking for a place I felt was clean, offered a good learning environment, and most of all, safe. I found all that and more at Heidi's House. The way they care for my child... it is like she is part of the family.

Each day we get a daily sheet of what they did and the teacher is always available to answer my questions or tell me about the funny things she said during the day.

If you are looking for a child center in the Greater Portland area then I highly recommend Heidi's House.

Heidi's House Child Care has been our family's first choice for over six years and two children. The level of care, development, safety and professionalism at all levels is outstanding. From researching this facility initially to hearing stories from friends about their experience at other facilities, we have not only been pleased but have and will continue to go out of our way to refer parents to Heidi's House. As parents, we are thrilled to have our children under the care of Heidi and her wonderful, long-term staff. As kids, our two have had the time of their lives and often don't want to leave at the end of the day. If you are in the position to seek child care due to work schedules and/or to provide enrichment and socialization for your child, Heidi's House should be your first choice. This is a crucial decision in your child's life, and you will want them in an accredited facility overseen by a professional and caring administration and staff.

So the oldest (25 yo) comes home from dropping her child off at daycare and she is crying. I am informed by her, and my 14 yo boy who was with her, that Heidi (the owner operator) decided it was necessary to scream at her, the mother of my grandchild....and did so in front of staff, other parents, and children. This confrontation was provoked as a result of Heidi being upset at the fact that the state pays for some of the grandchild's daycare because his mother falls within a certain income bracket... At any rate, the voucher was a real source of contention with Heidi as was social and economic standing, marital status, and age.
So I make several attempts to talk with Heidi on the phone about the fact that I didn??t think her behavior was professional nor did I think she would allow me to talk to her daughter in the same manner. I was hung up on a dozen times and was at one point told that ??it is none of my business ??. None of my business!? You??re talking to my family member with such disrespect and IT??S NONE OF MY BUSSINESS?? Seriously? She probably has a husband who wouldn??t protect her or her daughter and she has an expectation that families are like hers?.mine is not.
Heidi is a BULLY who makes it common practice to talk down to her staff, discipline children, and act unprofessionally and inappropriately with parents she deems "less" than her. When I arrived today to pick up my grandson, she avoided me and when I made a statement to her about my desire for her to talk to me in the same fashion that she had decided necessary to use when talking to my daughter, she had nothing to say. I told her to her face that I thought she was a BULLY and got no response. Several staff members looked on and I noticed a smile from one as I left the building. Again, this woman is used to getting away with talking down to people and being unprofessional. BULLY BULLY BULLY! Should be ashamed of herself?.
The grandchild has come home with bite marks, 2nd degree burns to his back that were the result of a hot slide, sunburned, and regularly remarked about being grabbed or yelled at by staff. Every account was followed up on and each time these issues were dismissed with what seemed like a reasonable explanation. Looking back, it saddens me to think I dismissed the complaints of a 3 yo and took the word of an adult because the child was in fact telling us the truth. I can be confident in saying this because today I witnessed Heidi tell a BOLD FACED LIE and it was only because I was able to confirm with another that all of the pieces have begun to fall into place and have provided a very clear picture of this woman: SHE IS A LIER WHO IS ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT BUSINESS
Be careful before you decide to send your child to her facility.
Before you decide to allow her to care for the most precious thing in your life, be advised: SHE IS A BUSINESSMAN FIRST. PERIOD.
