I was having some gear changing problems in my Nissan and the dealer could not figure out the problem. These people were recommended to me by my friend and when i brought the car here, they immediately diagnosed it to be a clutch problem and not a gear problem. My car was ready in 30 minutes.

I took my 1996 Land Rover Disco in to have the "death wobble" issue addressed. I knew what the solution was, I just didn't want to hassle with it (I was a mechanic in the military) and purchase additional tools. Not only did they refuse to inspect the parts I requested, they??not knowing I just had the ball joints replaced??tried to tell me they joints were bad/not put together correctly and they would charge $500 just to take them apart and put them back together. Anyone that knows how ball joints work knows thats BS. Also, there truly was not an issue with the joints. They also said they weren't sure that would fix the issue, but it was where they wanted to start. $500 to tear apart a perfectly fine and non-broken component? Be sensible. They also asked me to bring my car back in so they could look at it again. They only asked to do this after I balked at the their plan to tear apart the ball joints. The "death wobble" is a common and EASILY DIAGNOSED issue on the older Disco's. Why is it that a specialty shop couldn't figure it out and refused to check parts I mentioned? It's because they are scammers and saw an easy target. I will add that when I did take it back to them for the 2nd inspection, they told me I needed a new serpentine belt and water pump. They were going to charge me over $100 (without labor) for a belt that costs $40 and almost $400 (again, without labor) for a water pump that only costs $139 for the TOP brand and warranty. The kicker is that the belt was new and the water pump was not defective. I don't think they scam every customer, but I am certain the scam many of them...especially women and other people they THINK will have no mechanical knowledge. Blair is the owner??when I called to request a refund of the $90 inspection fee, he became irate and screamed at me like a child. This after he refused to return my call for two weeks. I ended up fixing my car myself for 1/8 of what they tried to charge for bogus repairs. I caution anyone considering University Foreign Auto to look elsewhere for vehicle repairs and maintenance.

I decided today to leave a negative comment on this Business who said they are expect in the foreign cars. In truth they are scammer. people who have good speech in their mouths to extract money from the poor people like me. I decided to bring my car over there for short visits. After their diagnostics they say I need to change a part on my car. I don't know if is was true, but they made me a bill for this part that costs $ 171.56 Labor $ 433.50, and I paid. After 1 year the same problem came back so I decided to do research on the internet. I discovered that the original part was costing $ 29.99, and they sold me at $ 171.56. I couldn't believe they sold me this part at this price. I bought the original part at $29.99, and I mounted on my car by myself. Please very careful about these scammer.

These guys are great. I have a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder that I USED to take to the dealership for maintenance and repairs, but I just didn't trust what they would tell me and the quality of their work. In addition, I used to take it to Midas, but then I realized that you get what you pay for with them; cheap parts and repair! A friend of mine told me about University Foreign repair and they have been great. They're honest and fair, reasonably priced, use high quality parts, and just no games or BS. Example...a few years back my car had a loud squeaking noise (some sort of belt) and it took the dealership 5 times to finally fix it. The same squeak recently came back and while I was getting my oil changed at UF, I told them about the squeak and they fixed in minutes with no charge! If anything, stop by and talk to the owner (he sounds like he knows his stuff) and get an estimate for what you need to have done...

I'm not sure of all the negatives that have been posted (Maybe they have this place confused with another shop???)...these guys are very nice and take the time out to discuss what does and doesn't ned repair and they do so in terms that I can understand!

I highly recommend!

Took my 2001 LandRover Discovery which was overheating to them for a repair. We were told that we needed the head gasket done. Paid $5000 for this repair which took 7 days. Two days after picking up the car it was having the same problem. They took it back, looked at it again and told us we needed a new engine. Did not offer us any compensation for the $5000 we wasted.

Worst experience I have ever had. What was suppose to take 1.5 hrs took over a week. That were just giving us a diagnosis. Owner was polite at first, but then sceamed and threatened to call the police. Dont want to get into it. Owner is a friggen nutcase!

Dropped off my vehicle due to a leak in the sunroof. They found other problems while working on the vehicle and ended up having it for over a week. My biggest complaint with this was that we had to keep calling them to check on the progress and I feel they should have been calling us to keep us posted.

When I got the vehicle back it had grease smudges on the ceiling fabric and on the arm rest. Further, they had forgotten to reset the change oil light.

It has been one week since I got it back and the floor is soaking wet from the rain we got the other day. Apparently the sunroof still leaks!

I am waiting for an oil change right now, and I overheard one of their staff talking about their website he was working on, and it appears they have a facebook page as well. I whipped out my DroidX and checked them out, I have a few minutes to spare. The website seems good enough, we repair cars, here is our phone number, what else do you need from a car repair web site. Their facebook appears to give updates on auto repair advice and schedules, as well as traffic or construction issues in the Lansing area - thats a rather helpful thing I think as I add their page feed to google reader.

Now there is a potential downside to all this - I have been waiting here almost 30 minutes for my oil change. They are a busy shop and locally owned, not some chain store. They have work lined up most days so it takes a little longer than your in and out oil change shop. But when they are done I know if my car has anything wrong with it they will let me know. That has given me the warning I need in the past so that I can budget for upcoming repairs. I normally leave my car with them and get a ride into work, I have seen a few of the people this morning get rides to work from the staff though, so it looks like they help with getting you to work as well.

I recommend giving them a chance at least. Eric at the front desk is very friendly, and gives you the feeling that your car is being well looked after.

This is my first semester at MSU and I was looking around town for a place to get my Subaru serviced. This shop is located just west of campus near the Frandor shopping center. They gave me a ride over to my class when I dropped my car off. I got my oil changed and everything went smoothly. It was a little more expensive than a drive in oil change shop, but they seem a great deal more professional.

I started coming here a few months ago when I needed an oil change, I was coming home off 127 and saw the shop a few blocks down Kalamazoo Street.

I got my oil changed and when I was paying they gave me a list of things that were in need of repair on my car! I was irritated at first seeing this list of expensive repairs, but they quickly broke it all down for me. They explained to me how to tell when my brakes were getting worse, what would happen if I didnt get the preventative repairs, and an estimate of how much longer I had.

Over the next two months I noticed the signs they pointed out (shaking when slowing down) gradually increase. I just got my brakes repaired there, and I feel good about the service I was provided.

Highly recommend!

These folks changed my oil for me, and pointed out a list of other repairs I would be needing in the future. They didnt pressure me at the time, but a few months later I noticed the signs they pointed out. I took it back to them to get my brakes fixed, I cant argue with that. The original oil change prepared me for what was coming so I could set some money aside. Thanks UFC!

Like I said in the pro, these mechanics are very helpful. I have gotten oil changes at UFC for a number of years. If they have me in for an oil change or for a brake job they always let me know if they see something that needs repair. A lot of other shops will just not tell you, figuring that when whatever else breaks then you will be back. If you want a full inspection it costs some money, but their advance warnings during normal service have saved me from what could have been major problems!

As a woman I have experienced many unfriendly mechanics trying to keep my car in good working order. The mechanics at University Foreign Car have always treated me with respect. I don't know much about the mechanical parts in a car, but these mechanics always give me an explanation I can understand, letting me know what is causing my car trouble and what I need to get back on the road.

I had an oil leak on my volkswagen jetta for a week or so and took it into Tuffy who fixed it up really cheap, it was less than $50! But then two days later I noticed it was leaking again!! \r
\r
I took it to university foreign car then, they seemed like a more personal shop than a cookie cutter Tuffy. I got to talk right to the mechanic who they said was a volkswagen expert. He said that this type of oil leak was a common problem at that many miles and he had worked on them before. That was two weeks ago and the problem has not reoccured! It was more expensive but not outrageous and since it fixed my oil leak properly I recommend them. The mechanic and the service person seemed honest and wanting to help.

I have been taking my subaru outback to University for maybe a year now, they have a very good repair shop! I used to go to another shop, so I would compare prices with the old shop at first. University would usually come out around the price of another shop, sometimes on big jobs they would be some small amount over, like 50 bucks or something more. This is more than made up for by the quality of service though, they fix my problems every time and Eric in the front office is very polite and positive.

Sometimes they do get really busy, but I guess when you compare their friendly local car service shop to a canned national chain it makes sense why.

I like this shop, they are very friendly people. I dont know alot about cars, but i know to change your oil and filters, some other things like spark plugs need to be done every once in a while. I have taken my cars here (civic and corolla) for a while to do this regular maintenance stuff and they do a good job. Also I have had an oil leak they repaired. They do a good job for me, and it seems others since I have seen all sorts of people in there, old people, young people, people that have old cars to keep up, and people that have new cars.

This is a auto service/repair facility in the Allen Street Neighborhood, right off 496 near Frandor. I am a car nerd, so I often do my own repairs and such, but every once in a while you dont have time for a big job, or it would just be that much easier in a large shop with a hoist. For all those types of situations I take my car in to UFC. I also like to recommend UFC to friends when I cant work their repairs into my work schedule. Also their parts department ('Chequered Flag' for all you Brits!) is really on the ball. They are my primary supplier for aftermarket parts and often manage to come up with some odd parts that I would otherwise be buying off some unheard of website run from somewhere in Europe.

I have been working with UFC for some years now, and have become acquainted with Mr. Mayes, the owner, during my visits. He is almost always at the shop - the true sign of a good owner in my opinion, not one of those guys that owns a oil change joint that you never see. And the parts manager Ross is hilarious, he sure knows his parts.

If you are wondering whether to give them a shot, I recommend them highly!

I have been taking my car to UFC for repairs for at least 10 years or so now, ever since I bought a new Honda Civic in 1998. They have always given me friendly and honest service. Having purchased a new car there was not a lot of service at first, but I got my oil changed there based on a friends recommendation - he is an old volkswagen aficionado and gets some hard to find parts from them.

Whenever I would reach those 'landmark' mileages (60k, 90k, etc) they always let me know what parts I should replace. If you don't know there are things like a timing belt that can be easily replaced for a day in the shop and few hundred bucks, but if they aren't replaced and the timing belt breaks you are in a financial nightmare! It breaks a number of other parts and makes a few hundred dollar replacement into a thousand dollar or more repair (an experience I had with an old Taurus many years ago, and have managed to avoid since). The fact that they helped with the reminders on when parts needed to be replaced made me feel secure doing business with them.

Recently I was in for an oil change and the employees were looking at a negative review on here that they had gotten, after reviewing the post just now I am amazed. The angry person said another shop offered to do their repairs for much less, but then come to find out diagnosed another more expensive problem. I would be willing to bet that the 'more expensive repair' that was necessary was factored in to UFC's estimate. As I said, I have a number of friends that are in to old cars and shop there, if there ever were a case where I paid too much someone would have pointed that out to me.

So with all that in mind, I am recommending UFC. They have excellent friendly service and as a result a large number of long time customers such as myself. From the few other negative reviews I have read about them it seems like they are by angry customers that don't know much about cars AND aren't willing to admit that. When UFC says I will fix your brakes and muffler for a certain amount, and then you walk next door and someone offers to sell you a candy bar for a dollar you can't scream bloody murder.

Charged $85 for a oil leak checkup, other stores only ask for $45. Dropped the car in the morning, and was told the exam would be done in the afternoon. Called at 4:30 pm, and they said they would call me right back. An hour later when I called the store was already closed. Looks like they already forgot about me! I have to scramble for a ride home.

Obviously you are talking about a different UFCR. This was my experience with them. \r
\r
They sold us a car, lying the whole time. They said they had been through it front to back, FIXING ALL POTENTIAL ISSUES, and based on this (and the fact that they assured us the 'new' refurbished engine they replaced was in great shape and an amazing deal... that it was under warranty and 'they stand behind their product'), I paid very close to the top end of blue-book, around $6500.\r
\r
The reality? Less than a year later, major engine trouble was diagnosed, costing several thousand dollars in repairs. Their response to the earlier assurances? 'Oh that guy wasn't that honest, he's not with us anymore cause he used to exaggerate all the time. There's no warranty.' Even the owner had stood right next to us while his employee told bald faced lies that cost us $10,000 for what should have been a $2500 car. I would have been talking to a lawyer if I didn't have to move out of state for work literally the next day. $4000 in repairs later, we're looking at having to unload it for next to nothing. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THEIR CARS OR BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY SAY.

Pros: Initially make you feel very comfortable and excited for the investment.

Cons: Getting horribly, horribly ripped off.

I had my Ck Eng Light come on in my 2001 VW Jetta GLS 1.8t, she has over 110k miles on her, she started running really rough, so I pulled into University Foreign Car Repair, told them what was happening with the ""C.E.L."" and her running rough, they asked if I could leave it for them to go over, no problem, they even gave my daughter and I a ride back to Mason ( I didn't even have to ask).\r
\r
While waiting on the results of the inspection, I went on-line and started to scare myself with what ""could be wrong"", OUCH this is going to hurt the wallet kind of thing. Got the call back from UFCR and got the bad news...found out that there was a laundry list of routine things that have been neglected on the car but, some if not fixed could have serious expensive ramifications if I don't get them fixed soon. ( Bought the car used) \r
\r
I told the service manager my situation and he suggested that the best way to go about this would be to fix ""X"" 1st, then knock things off the list as soon as I could afford to to more. He was able to get my car running safely and effectively (the gas mileage got better, and in a Jetta, I didn't think that was possible) UFCR has earned a customer for life and a person that will sing their praise forever! \r
\r
OBTW, they got me back on the road for less than $75 and that was with a complete system check of Engine, Trans, Turbo, Suspension and Brakes along with fixing the immediate problem.

Pros: They will tell you like it is and they are honest, you get what you pay for

Cons: You're not fixing a Chevy...so expect to pay more for repairs

Recently my 2001 VW Jetta GLS w/ 110k on her had the Check Eng Light come on and started to run really really rough. I took the car into U.F.C.R. and let them work their magic on the car. My daughter and I needed a ride back to Mason, we didn't even have to ask, they got us home and we waited for the solution to the problem. We got the estimate for the repairs that the car needed, granted I bought the car used and she has over 110K miles on her...so the list was long, extensive, and very expensive, I kind of figured it would be, the service manager knowing that life here in Mid Michigan is economically tight, suggested that we take one thing at a time and he could get me back on the road for $75!!!! As we get extra money and after the hit we're going to have to take from buying school clothes for 2 HS aged and 2 MS aged kids along with Fall sports, and we can get back in there, one by one we will be getting the Jetta brought back up to par. With their honesty, and their understanding of our situation, UFCR has earned a customer for life!

I have had my Honda Civic, my husbands Honda Accord and my daughters VW Jetta worked on here. They are always very helpful with advise and have fixed many problems that the dealerships either ignored or did a bandaid. The cost is always lower than the dealership and the work is always high quality. They may not be the cheapest place in town, but you get what you pay for!!!

I have been taking my cars to University Foreign Car for 20 years. As a woman I am always treated with respect and each service is explained to me fully. The guys let me know when I need to start thinking about a timing belt that will need changing so I can work it into my budget. Or what difference using synthetic oil verse normal oil is and will it extend the life of my car. I'm so grateful that I found Blair and Eric and the guys and will continue letting them take care of my car and educating me so I can continue making good decisions on choosing cars and maintaining them.

We got an estimate for a repair here and decided not to have the work done due to the expense. Recently we took it to another repair shop and asked how much the same repair would be. The cost was $1000 less! When we went to have the work done, the other place discovered it was a different- and far more inexpensive- problem. Had we had the work done at University, we would be out $2500 for a repair that would not have fixed the problem. This is the sort of place that gives auto mechanics a bad reputation.

why would you think that a shop fixing a transmission leak with an additive with be a good thing?\r
\r
rather suspicious that a person called quadman was just hurling the same kind of feces at people on a different forum

I went to University Foriegn car after another local facility diagnosed my Subaru w/ a bad head gasket ready to spend.\r
After inspecting my vehicle they wanted to try a lesser measure ( some addative) for $10.00 to possibly stop the problem... AFTER I approved almost $2000.00 for the repairs point blank, not only that but they offered to check my car 2 times for no charge to reinspect what is now NOT A LEAK!!!! What a place this is!!!\r
Im sure Ill have an issue again ( I have over 200,000 miles) and Ill go no where else !! Thanks guys!

This business is a ripoff. They charge 2-3X what the dealer charges for a given repair. I have the records to prove it. They are charming con artists, nothing more. \r
\r
Here's the story: I knew what the problem was going before going in for an estimate--the brakes were not working properly. When they told me the total estimate ($1500), I asked them to tell me exactly they needed to repair (the specific parts), and how much the parts and labor would cost. I then called the dealer and told them what needed to be repaired, both the parts and the labor. The dealer told me that the parts would cost one-third (!) of what U Foreign Car quoted--that's what they would charge ME for the parts. And the dealer tole me the work on the car would cost *half* of the labor charge quoted by UFC. I called UFC back and double checked on what they intended to do, making sure I understood the repair. I had it right. I then PICKED UP THE CAR FROM UFC, PAID THEM FOR THE ESTIMATE, WENT TO THE DEALER AND ENDED UP SAVING $700 DOLLARS ON THE REPAIR, even after you subtract the 50 bucks I paid to UFC. \r
\r
DON'T GO TO UNIVERSITY FOREIGN CAR. CALL ELSEWHERE. UNLESS YOUR REPAIR IS HIGHLY SPECIALIZED, MANY GARAGES CAN DO IT MUCH, MUCH CHEAPER. AND EVEN THE OVERPRICED DEALER WILL DO IT CHEAPER. MUCH CHEAPER.

They are scam artists! My Story: I took my car to them for fouling the plugs, they convinced me that they needed to replace the head gasket and it would solve the problem. They replaced gaskets, valves, sensors, radiator, and hoses. I complained about them charging me $2000 more than they quoted and they would not let me have my car unless I paid. I had no choice but to pay. The problem still was not fixed so I took them to small claims court and it was obvious that the ""paid off"" judge had her foreign car fixed by these German scam artists. They will get there?s when it is time to go to heaven or hell!

Thorough, fast, friendly, courteous. They knew the nuances of my engine (Subaru 2.5 DOHC) and the problems and pitfalls of changing the timing belt. They provided all the required papers/information before and after the work. I felt very comfortable. I'm glan I went there and I'll be back.

Fast, friendly, courteous. They knew my car and the nature of the work I needed. I felt very comfortable in their hands. Cost was well below the dealership. They could have pulled a fast one on me with an additional small problem I had but they took the high road and were completely honest. I'm glad I went there and I'll be back.

I've taken my Prelude and then Accord to these guys several times over the last 10 years. They aren't the cheapest but they do a pretty good job most of the time. A couple times though I've had them mess up on engine-electrical problems. In my experience, when they do get it wrong they don't admit to it and they won't give you a break on fixing it correctly. If you know exactly what you want to have done--like replacing something or changing the oil--take it to these guys. If you need to have a problem diagnosed, you might want to go elsewhere.

These people are very trustworthy and do an excellent job. My husband drives an older honda and we took it in for a tune-up and asked for them to tell us if it needed any other work. We basically told them that we had money set aside to take care of any problems. Even knowing that they could make extra money off of us they told us that it didn't need anything. They are always quick with their repairs and are very personable. I'd recommend them to anyone.

to share my experience for public interest, i spent more than $2,000 to fix my car. they did not give me any estimate, and when i later requested a copy of order sheet, they refused to give it to me. i don't know what kind of rights i have as a customer from these people. then, i realized that they didn't even do the job properly on the shift gear. but i had to go to them three times until they finally recognize that there is a problem with their service. i have never received any apology from them, and they were not very nice either. at that time, i also witnessed that one of the mechanics swearing at a customer in dispute over the service and service charge. it looked very unprofessional. i believe customers deserve way better treatment and way better service than that.

University Foreign Car has worked on my 1994 Honda Civic three times in recent years, and I have been VERY impressed with their service until now. This week I had the exhaust system repaired and asked them to diagnose and fix a problem with the speedometer -- for a THIRD time. They were not able to diagnose the problem, gave no acceptable explanation, and even made insulting remarks when I pressed for answers. While I doubt this typifies their service, I feel compelled to communicate such a lack of respect to consumers.
