The only reason I felt compelled to post concerning On Target is the negative posts I've read concerning their service -I COULD'NT DISAGREE MORE. I was in their establishment last week looking to purchase a handgun. As I was approaching the counter, a female salesperson made eye contact with me while I was still 8 -10 feet away and asked me what she could help me with. She was very cordial and knowledgeable. I knew what I wanted to buy, and she was very efficient in filling out the necessary paperwork, mentioned the layaway plan(which I opted not to do), and she also explained how they handle themselves the necessary background check. All in all a great experience, I was in and out of the store inside of 10 minutes. I might add that the only other time I was there was approximately 5 years ago to purchase some .223 ammo but was unsure of the particular load to purchase. Again, I was waited on promptly by a knowledgeable sales person who was extremely amicable(just like my experience last week), who directed me on exactly what round to purchase. I reside 55 miles from On Target - could have driven to Lansing, Jackson, Battle Creek etc.(all closer) but I choose to buy from this location. Sorry for the long expose - just wanted to express my limited positive history.

Prices are generally high, service is hit or miss. Been in a few times in the last 6 months and every time the price is considerably higher than I find elsewhere, so I have only bought a holster. Went in a few times and got someone knowledgeable, been in a couple and got someone who talked confidently but very erroneously. I keep going here to comparison shop, but I it's not competitive.

On Target Guns and Gunsmithing believes in holding customer satisfaction to a high standard and keeping prices competitive along with having the largest selection of products that you can find. In response to those who have written negative reviews, we have printed and have circulated them to our employees to resolve issues and to correct our mistakes. Some customers have made themselves a problem. Owners and managers deal with these ??special? customers in certain ways, such as forcing them to leave so that the other customers will not be disturbed. Although we do make mistakes, we make every attempt at making it right. In some instances the solution cannot be found because the customers simply feel that writing a negative review is more convenient. In response to sometimes having too much product, we buy things in large quantities in an attempt to keep prices down to the consumer, we feel that too much product is a good thing. It allows for everyone to have the best chance at finding the right product for them. Also, who ever heard of owning too many guns or having too much ammo? Really?

I;ve bought over $3,000+ worth of handgungs, rifles, shotguns, and reloading supplies over the past 10 years. I just made another purchase tonight on a Bersa Thunder.380 to replace one that was stolen a few years ago. I originally went there to buy a Ruger P95 9mm which they had in stock but they didn't have the stainless slide version that I wanted. I also did my home work and brought along pages that I printed off of Gunbroker.com that listed the best "buy now" prices for several guns that I was interested in.
I was in there the day before looking at some of the firearms that I was intersted in and wrote down the prices on the back of a store business card that the sales person I was dealing with had given me.
Unfortunately I had misplaced it. Before I left my town to make the 40 minute drive to On Target, I called the store and spoke with a sales person to get the prices on the handguns I was intersted in and had looked at the day before.. He said he was in the back room and was trying to look up the prices in a catalog but couldn't find the guns I was looking for; which was for the Bersa Thunder 380 Two Tone and the Bersa Thunder .22 Caliber Nickle Plate gun that I had looked at the day before. He asked me to hold while he went out to the showroom to get the prices. After 3-4 minutes he came back on the line and said that he couldn't find any Bersa handguns in the display case.
I found this hard to believe since they had several less than 24 hours before and I asked him " So you sold all of the Bersa Handguns that you had yesterday?" He replied, "I guess so."
I still couldn't believe it so I left home, picked up my girlfriend and went to Kalamazoo to see for myself. It was a Saturday and they were fairly busy, but I was able to squeeze my way to the counter and look where they were the day before, and there they were in the same place.
I agree with the other comments that some of the employees probably shouldn't be dealing with the public because they are either complete idiots, or are burnt out and intentionally messing with callers, or visiting customers heads for kicks.
I don't want to say this about all of their personnel because the sales person I dealt with the day before knew his guns as did the one I dealt with when I got to the store today.
I also want to say that I agree that some of their merchandise is very overpriced, but when it came to the guns I was interested in, I did alot of shopping around in person and online and their price was the same as the lowest price that I had found online for several of the guns I was intersted in. The one that I settled on was $20 more than the cheapest price that I had found online at "Gunbroker.com" and asked the sales person if they could match the price. He said all he could do was ask the owner; which he did. The owner came out to talk to me and said that by the time I paid for shipping and the FFL dealer transfer that I would end up paying more than their out the door price;and he was right. But he compromised regardless and knocked $10 off of the price which at least paid for the gas. I left happy with my purchase as usual.

The bottom line about On Target Guns in Kalamazoo is that they have the largest inventory in my area and reasonalble prices on alot of their firearms. I agree that I'm not sure why some of the people who work there are there dealing with the public when I know more about the guns than they do. Maybe they are family members, or friends of the owner who were owed a favor but if you can overlook these issues and do your homework and bring in proof that you can get the same item significantly cheaper elsewhere, it doesn't hurt to ask for a better deal.
Also if you don't think that the salesperson you are dealing with is helping you with your informed decision on a firearm, politely thank him for his time and then find someone else to help you. If you just browse for a while and listen to the different sales persons talk with customers, you can easily figure out who knows "Jack S." and who doesn't.
I've been satisfied with all of my purchases and will continue to do business with them as long as the price is right.

This place awful with customers first of all I bought six guns last year and traded about four and I also bought a Taurus from there next day the clip was falling out so the guy says either they send it in to Taurus or I get my money back and never buy a gun from them I went with option two because I shouldn't have problems with an unwired gun a day after buying it. Then he says you also can't have any service repair done either which is bull @#$% then just the othet day sent my wife in to have some night sights put on my m&p and the owner found out that was my wife now were both completely ban from the shop so they are saying anybody who knows me and buys supplies for me will be ban is that legal? So then my night sight goes out on my m&p and they won't warranty it so watch what you buy they may not warranty anything this place sucks BEWARE OF THIS FLEA MARKET @#@$ HOLE

Last time I bought Beretta 92FS. It supposed to be unused with yellow tag attached to it.I did not had my glasses with me at that time and could not notice some scratches . Later when I inspected gun more carefully I noticed scratches on slides finish .It looked like somebody had used this gun already . I can blame only myself for not inspecting gun extra carefully before I buy it... And I forgot to mention that gun was overpriced. Actually everything is overpriced in On Target! This store simply sucks!
Be careful guys when you buy something at On Target in Kalamazoo and think 3X before you buy. Better go some place else. On Target is no the only gun store. I lately found other stores ."Bob's Gun & Tackle Shop Incorporated" 2208 W M-43 Hwy, Hastings, MI 49058 (best prices on ammo!)
or "Silver bullet Firearms" in 5121 S. Division Avenue Wyoming, MI 49548

On Target just sucks!!!

Every time I come from out of state, to visit family or to attend the medieval conference,I go to On Target. I got in on good buys on 7.62x54, 8mm mauser on bandoliers and 7.62x39. On my last visit I bought primers and powder and various pieces of reloading equipment. The salesman was young but knowledgeable and took the time to things for me that weren't out. An even pleasanter experience than usual. I only wish that I'd had more time to browse the C&R long guns. And I have nothing against flea markets.

Over the last 2 years I have stopped in On Target many times in pursuit of my first Firearm, I have shot many times but had not purchased one yet on my first visit to the shop. I have unquestionably been treated well on all of my visits.
If I was not greated on entry I did not wait long either, The staff has never been anything but helpful and pleasant. Everyone there made me feel as if they trully wanted to see purchase a weapon that fit my needs and skill level as well as my intended type of shooting. One salesman on a slow day spent almost an hour and a half just going over the ups and downs of different styles.
I have to agree with one of the others who said there is a young man who should not be working there, on my last visit he showed me a couple of pistols and the way he spoke made me believe he thought he was always on the verge of some epic movie gunfight. In my opinion a dangerous frame of mind for someone who is handling firearms all day.
As of yet I have not purchased a gun there so I don't know how they are after the purchase, but when I finally settle on a Pistol I will be buying there since they invested so much time in me.

a great place to shop.the guys know there guns.there is a little over 600 yrs hunting and shooting experiene between the people that work in the store.they have olyimpic class shooters, ipsc combat shooters, cowboy action shooters, and long range rifle shooters.a number of people who have worked there have hunted on several continents.there are not a lot of animals that at least one person in the store has not hunted.they have a extensive reloading section.they have helped a amazing number of people get into reloading.i`ve seen reviews that have said that they have had bad service.in all of my shopping experiences there i have never seen it.i have seen customers get frustrated with employees there but that was due to them doing absoultly no homework on the weapons they intended to buy.would you buy a car with no knowledge of the product?i wouldn`t.the store is usually real busy.help them so they can help you.have questions in mind so the employee can point you in the right direction.if you stand there with a blank stare they might just pass on you and go to someone else.so do your homework!!

I kinda feel sorry for the sales staff at On Target. Every time I am there some jerk is wasting time not knowing what he/she wants. If you are going to buy a gun, #1 know what you want, do some research, internet would be a good place to start, maybe a book. #2 Dont think that the staff is going to save you and make you feel all fuzzy about owning a gun. If your going to carry one around with your shinny new CCW be prepared to use it, or someone will take it away from you and kill you with it. Also its a gun store, if you want well lit wide ilses, high air quality, friendly staff, maybe you should go to Menards and buy some throw rugs with the rest of the sheep.

I was in the market to purchase my first handgun for home defense. I??ve owned several rifles in the past, so I??m familiar with firearms. On Target has been around for many years in Kalamazoo, so I figured I??d search their first for a handgun. I saw two major problems with ??On Target? which are their current staff and the store layout.
Either they are under staffed so it??s impossible to get service, ask a question or their staff acts like a total jerk to you. I decided not to purchase a gun their but did returned a second time to browse their selection.
The problem with their selection is it??s so vast; they just pile guns all over the shelves in the display cases. It??s extremely difficult to read the description on the tags, find what caliber you??re looking for and the prices are much higher on new guns. I??m sure other people have had better experience with On Target, except I??ll spend my money elsewhere.

I frequent "On Target" all the time. In fact I just purchased a stock for my AR-15 the first one was the wrong one I went back the next day and they replaced it for free no questions asked. I'm not going to lie and say that someone helps you out immediately upon entering, they don't, but if you ask for help you get it. I know quite a bit about firearms and accessories for them so when I ask them about or for something I generally know more than they do, which is fine because not everyone can be an expert about everything. When you go in just do your homework before hand and ask if you don't know.

Take my advice!!...On Target has the worse reputation, everything overpriced it's been my experience too many times,
I don't even go there any more. I didn't have much time to look around the last time or ask questions because the clerks are always in a bad mood, it would be nice to get a clerk that isn't a total "a-hole" and could actually answer some questions. STAY AWAY!!!... Take your business somewhere else where you'll get treated nice.

On Target has that reputation, it's been my experience too many times,
I don't even go there any more. Their prices are always high and the clerks are always in a bad mood. Take your business to Gander Mountain in Portage, you'll get treated nice.

I'm not a regular, these are my first visit impressions.

I'm in the market for my first gun, and I've made the rounds to most of the local shops. Gunslingers in Three Rivers, Gander Mountain, and On Target. Granted I've haven't fired a gun yet, but I've done some research.

The best thing I can say about On Target is they have a very wide and deep selection of guns. Easily 100x more guns then any other story locally. On Target also carries items that no other local stores do like assault weapons.

The biggest problem could easily be they carry too many guns. The place is dingy, and poorly laid out. Its not easy to shop, unless your familiar with it. Its hard to find the exit. Lots of the glass counters are badly scratched, and difficult to see through. Since there are so many guns, most are poorly presented, and handwritten tags makes them difficult to read. It has a homely, cramped feel to it. Its more like a flea market then a store.

Their customer service though, ranges from amazing to negligent. You can get someone like Shelia, who is a regular at Southern Michigan Gun Club, who teaches classes, and is safe, polite, and professional. She spoke to my wife for a bit about shooting as a hobby, and recommend a revolver, as a good first handgun. 10/10

Another person I spoke with isn't even 21. A minor is going to sell me a handgun he himself can't even buy. The idiocy of having someone so young work the counter and expecting them to field questions is beyond me. I don't feel comfortable trusting my life to his answers. His handling was poor, but safe. "Point it and *pew*" (dry fires into a wall). 5/10.

You might speak to someone else though. One guy I spoke with for a bit showed my wife a Keltec subcompact. I watched as he dry fired the gun into her chest to demonstrate the trigger weight on a Keltec. Could not keep his finger out of the trigger guards on any guns he handled. Pointed the muzzle at me, at her, at our heads, and himself. You know? I don't like guns pointed at me. I don't care its likely never been loaded. There is no excuse. Maybe I should have called him on it, but I'm leaning towards taking my business elsewhere. 0/10.

You are correct in the fact that "some" of the staff have a proficient knowledge of firearms, but there are a lot of very inexperienced people working there also! I am a gun collector and shooter, and It's shocking to see how some of their staff handle their firearms and yours too! I have personally seen them spinning pistols around like you see in old cowboy movies and dry firing them like crazy! I have also seen staff spinning the cylinders on revolvers and slamming them shut while they are still spinning! Not something that's very professional or good for the firearm!I've spent quite a lot of money there over the years and I wouldn't trade nickles with them again! I've purchased many firearms, ammunition, gun safes etc. I purchased a new skeet shotgun and had major problems from day one! I know it wasn't their fault, but the way I was treated was shameful! They did nothing but give me the run around! It took me months to work out the problem! I only got somewhere by threatening to relay the way they treated me to the other members of our conservation club. They didn't seem, to me, to be concerned with keeping a long standing customer!I can also vouch for the many others who couldn't find anyone to give them a hand with a product! ON TARGET is a great place to look for a firearm or gun safe, but buy it somewhere else! Go support a local mom and pop shop that will treat you better and be much cheaper too! ON TARGET is very over priced!! My advice to ON TARGET: get rid of some of your worthless employees and keep those who are helpful and knowledgeable about firearms! Most importantly, treat your customers with dignity and respect!

The salesman spent a long time with me and reassured me that he'd rather have me ask a lot of questions that buy something I didn't want. He also helped me select precisely the weapon I wanted -- and after reading numerous reviews of the weapon, I noted that his opinions about the firearm were dead on super-accurate.

I feel like some responses are in order too:

If people are having bad experiences there, consider that sometimes they get really busy, try a slower time of day.

I don't think they're really into negotiating prices, so don't be shocked if they don't want to be in that conversation. Wow.

After reading these reviews I can't believe how far off the pace people are about On Target Guns in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I have never owned or fired a gun a day in my life. I am also very analytical and research the products that I am interested in before I go to look and buy. I spent many a trips and hours in On Target looking at various guns and every time received great customer service. Granted the place looks like a flea market and is pretty dirty but they have a LOT of inventory. Every gun that I went to look at, they had. Every sales associate I spoke with took their time, answered all of my questions, and knew about every gun I was interested in. On Target also has some of the best prices that you will find anywhere! The first gun that I purchased was a Walther P22. Yes, I could have bought the gun for about $40.00 less online. This is not a savings though when you look at the fact that shipping averaged $30 to $40 plus the FFL fees involved. Also, On Target has the absolute best layaway program ! $20.00 down, at least $1.00 down every 2 weeks, pay the balance off within 6 months, zero interest, and if you change your mind on the gun they let you use your balance on anything else in the store. On Target also took the time to talk with me about local places and competitions to shoot at and the process of obtaining my concealed weapons permit. Just purchased my second gun from them and received an extremely good priced compared to the market. Granted you will wait 15 to 20 minutes sometimes to work with a sales person, but they are busy!!!! I have never been to On Target without at least 10 cars in the parking lot and a packed showroom. The only reason I gave On Target a 4 star rating was due to the cluttered and dirty facilities.

I like On Target. The reason i do is that i know what i want when i walk in the door. I dont have to wait around for a salesman,Mostly reloading and cleaning supplies..Prices are ok.NOW, here are a couple suggestions...1: CLEAN and ORGANIZE...its like walking into a rummage sale, inventory laying all over the place. Im surprised you even know if you have an item let alone try and find it...WHY didnt you increase the size of your building a few years back when your rebuilt???2: Get someone in their that can organize that mess, I tell myself every time im there (especially the reloading supply area) that if i had a couple days in here i could organize this mess.3:Get rid of that rack of used surplus military rifles...Put your good used rifles out where people can see them/look at them/inspect them and not behind the gun counter where there is no one to wait on you. Really....how big a market is there on used WWI russian rifles and beat up bolt action military junk? Get those off the floor.4: That area behind the service area where you have gun safes,,,thats wasted space, clean it up and put it to good use..Someday, maybe i can go into your store and not have to climb over boxes of surplus ammo..

If you want to go somewhere to talk to someone who knows their stuff, this is the place. If you want to go somewhere with god awful service this is also the place. You could stand by the counter waiting to look at a gun or ask a question and literally be there for 20 or 30 minutes. Great products though, but very over priced.

I have been going to On Target for my gun supplies and repair for years. They have been owned and run by the same proprieters for over 20 years. These guys KNOW their stuff, inside and out. They do not hire just anyone to work the counter, for minimum wage like at the 'big box' places. At times (especially during hunting season) this can make them a bit short staffed but I am happy to wait if needed, knowing that I will receive quality advice/service/repair from someone knowledgable. I now live over an hour away and have many other gun shops closer, but will make the drive to go to On Target because of this.

They saved me so much in the spring on shells that I bought 400 boxes at 4-5$ a box. Beat even Wal-Marts price by 1.50$. Saved me 600$!! I've been shooting them all summer and they are the excellent Golden Trap, and 20 ga Fiocci loads that function well in my auto loaders! One of my favorite places to shop and worth the drive from Indiana!!! They are professionals, on what I consider a big volume deal like I had.

If you need a gun fixed then this is the place to take it. They can fix almost any kind of problem, they know everything about guns. You can also buy assorted bullets and gun supplies here.
