No stars. We resided in Lapeer County twice. Both times we were harassed about our animals and it became apparent the inner workings of the animal control (called 'shelter') were not on the up and up. I lived in Oakland County for forty some years previously, and NEVER had any issues with Oakland County Animal Control, nor were my motives or husbandry called into question.
Additionally, I agree with posters who describe the staff as rude; they are, inutterably; particularly if they feel their knowledge or control is being challenged. I have heard stories from people about animals sold or removed by staff from the shelter for profit; horses to slaughter, dogs to breeding programs. I have also noted that volunteers or Rescues do NOT appear welcome at the Lapeer County Animal Shelter. Every community needs an animal control; but/and ordinances that conflict with state laws, power hungry staff, illegal search and seizures (unless you are among the elite they favor), et al are not acceptable. The proposed improvements are a step in the right direction; new leadership would be another.

I feel so bad for the poor little beatle. Bless that poor little ones heart. The evil person who put him down should be so ashamed. I am trying to say this as nice as I can because if I said what should be said it would not be nice. Evil

The dogs are in cages that are too small, some women was rude to people when they pick up thier lost animal. The cost was too high when picking up your lost pet. I would still help the animals by buying an animal from the shelter. The animal shelter should have the money to build a bigger building or add on to that building, and build bigger cages or indoor fencing. Get rid of the rude people who work there, fire the women and get new people.

I have adopted 2 dogs from this shelter. Both times the staff was helpful & caring. Considering their limited funding, they do an excellent job. The cages are antiquated, but clean & the animals have food & water. The animals are not overcrowded and have room to move around. The rooms are heated & well lighted. The animals are healthy. One dog I adopted tested heartworm positive (not the shelters fault!) and the shelter was concerned and willing to work with me to extend her spay neuter date until she was healthy enough to have surgery. The no kill facilities I have seen are poor in comparison, with hopeless neurotic animals living out their poor quality lives in cages. Bottom line is there are too many animals & not enough homes because people refuse to neuter their pets. I pity the employees who have to clean up after other peoples lack of responsibility.

I adopted a 12yr old Golden Retriever from the Lapeer County Animal Shelter in January of 2009 and the staff was very friendly and helpful, I have been in there numerous times since then and have never had a problem. I do agree that the kennels they keep the dogs in could definetly be better, but for the most part my experience was good.

This shelter is horriable they kill 89% of the animals, it is a scary, dirty and awful place for an animal to have to spend it's last days. Why cant they be a no kill shelter, if they cleaned up the facility and turned it into an actual "shelter" giving these dogs hope for a home, no animal deserves to be put to death just because of a human's circumstances. I hate how Lapeer County runs everything but this is the TRUE face of a community who obviously DOES NOT CARE. Their is absolutely no reason for any shelter to be a kill shelter!

I have to agree, I volunteered at the humane society in arizona, and the conditions here are shockingly horrible. The dogs are kept in a back room, the smell is overwhelming, the cages are rusted and small, all of the dogs looked sick and depressed. Cleaning should be throughout the day, and adequate light should be provided, as well as attention. The cats seem to be a bit better off, but those poor dogs are absolutely miserable.

Consider adopting from there to save an animal. It's a miserable sad and dark place. Animals are in tiny cages with wire floors and don't seem to get much interaction from the staff.I don't think it's that way because of money because I've seen many others that are nicer with less.

I am responding to the last post. I have not been to this particular animal shelter but I do feel the animal shelters in general could be kept in better condition. I have been looking for a pup or young dog to rescue for about 3 weeks and do feel that people seem to be misleading and also the dogs seem to be not healthy. I am not sure about adopting out of the places I have been to see dogs physically. They look different on petfinder. So, bottom line is - if I want to adopt I am looking for a pet to give a home, shelter, sleep with me, etc. a friend. darn it - I just don't have $300.00 or $250.00. Even $150.00 is more reasonable. Does anybody take payments or would they rather put the young pups with a future to sleep?????

I go to the animal shelter here in lapeer frequently, and have offered to volunteer numerous times. Not once that I have gone there have I been greeted or even acknowledged. The staff is very rude and if anything turns off the idea to adopt. They act as though you are wasting their time or bothering them when inquiring about an animal. The prices are very high, which is understandable, but I think it also dampens the prospect of adoption. The animals I think need more interaction and attention as when anyone even comes into the kennel area for dogs they cry, and I have seen piles of feces that have obviously been there awhile. Overall I acknowledge how hard it would be to keep a pristine, and fairly priced shelter, but I also think that if a few steps were taken it would make a huge difference in adoption rates.

I have adopted seven or more animals over the years from the Animal shelter. Our three dogs and one cat are the current ones. People should adopt when they can, but the fee's are high, more people would probably adopt if it wasn't so expensive. But I know money is needed for their care. Spay and neuter your pets!
