This place should change their name to "The Unethical Cat Practice". If you're considering taking your cat to this vet office, or if you are currently taking your cat to this location, please re-consider what you are doing with your time and money. Bottomline, they rip people off. And what they're doing is nothing short of animal abuse. They told me my cat's teeth were the "worst they had seen in years". Gave me an estimate of $1,800-$3,000 to have ALL of her teeth removed. They kept us there for 2 hours. I left that appointment, and immediately called another vet, hoping I was not going to have to spend thousands of dollars on my cat. (She is like family to me, but let's get real, she's a CAT). So I took her to an actual veterinarian. He works on every kind of animal.. dogs, cats, pigs, cows, horses. He looked at her teeth, smiled at me and said "she just needs her teeth cleaned". I set up my appointment for the teeth cleaning and we were out of there in 5 minutes. Today was my cat's teeth cleaning. My bill was $115 (there were a few teeth that had to go and they charged me $10 per tooth. the actual cleaning was $85). That is less than the $125 I wasted at The Unethical Cat Practice. That's what they charged me just to LOOK at her. Oh yeah, and The Cat Practice wanted to charge $200 per tooth that had to be removed. I don't think humans even pay that much to have teeth removed. And that was just the start of their nonsense. They also told me they may not be able to get to all of her teeth in 3 hours (that is the maximum time you can put a small animal down for surgery) so she may have to come back for a SECOND surgery. It took 10 MINUTES for the vet to clean her teeth today (and remove the 3 teeth that needed to be extracted). Again, this is a cat we're talking about. They have very small teeth. I wondered why The Unethical Cat Practice didn't send me home with a copy of their estimate. Now I know. The never-ending list of charges on that quote was seriously a JOKE. These are not qualified people. I'm just glad my 5-year old cat gets to keep her teeth, and I get to keep my hard earned money. By the way, the vet office I am using now is Paint Creek Animal Clinic in Rochester. They are very honest and they take care of animals. If it's a little bit of a drive for you (it is 45 minutes for me), trust me it will save you lots of $ in the end. In my case, it actually saved me thousands which is sad to say. It's unfortunate there are businesses out there like The Cat Practice.

Business Response:

We are sorry that you decided not to return to The Cat Practice and hope that your cat is doing well. Anytime a cat suffers from chipped/broken teeth and severe gum inflammation, the pain is excruciating. Plus the resulting bacteria often leads to more serious illness including liver, kidney and heart disease. For all procedures, we take every precaution to make sure each cat is safe and comfortable. This includes pre-operative and post-operative pain medication, pre-anesthesia blood work and urinalysis to rule out any other health conditions, dental x-rays so that we do not miss anything, complete monitoring while under anesthesia, fluids to keep the cat hydrated, post-operative care and more. No more than several teeth are extracted at a time to not exceed the amount of time a cat can safely be kept under anesthesia. The estimate provided to you was from $1,250 to $1,861; we are happy to send you a copy. Please contact any of our three feline veterinarians, or me directly. Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. -- Dr. Cindy Houlihan, DVM/Owner, The Cat Practice/248-540-3309 IMPORTANT NOTE TO CAT FAMILIES β?? dental disease is on the rise β?? ask your veterinarian about prevention with regular brushing and new gel cleansers.

Not only are the prices at TCP excessive, but the women who run the front desk are unfriendly, rude, and incompetent. Aside from not greeting you when you walk in the door, they'll also make you wait 15-20 minutes to check in (or out) while they have casual conversations with other clients. They show no compassion towards your pet(s) and only act semi-interested when it comes to taking your credit card. Take my advice and find a different vet with cheaper prices and friendlier staff!

Business Response:

We appreciate and welcome your feedback and are sorry that you had a less than favorable experience. Four receptionists staff our lobby area and we want to make sure that they are making everyone feel welcome. It sounds like you may have come at a busy time, but in any case, thatβ??s not an excuse for not giving you the full attention you deserve. Our three veterinarians care for cats from around the metro area and stress preventive care to help cats live longer, healthier lives and to save cat families money in the long run. If you contact us directly, I would love to hear more and find out how we can make it right for you and your pet. β?? Cindy Houlihan, DVM 248-540-3390

I have been taking my cats and kitties to The Cat Practice since 1996, The staff has always been very friendly and caring and has been very compassionate to the mommy, (which is me). I never doubted the treatment or service that I received over these last years. BUT... I have to say there is definetly been a change in the atmosphere that i pick up there, unfortunately I feel that MONEY is now their main motivator, I went to pick up my kitty a few weeks ago and the bill wal almost $2.000.00, they want you to pay the entire balance while you are there. Their prices are over the top! Especially for me , I am a single cat owner who is trying so hard to take care of my cats but at the same time I dont have a money tree in my backyard.

I think the Cat Practice pretty much wants clients from Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills only now because they would be the only ones able to afford their over the top charges. Its too bad they don't care about loosing loyal clients. I can't afford to take my kitty family there anymore and I feel so sad because the staff there is great especially the techs are wonderful. A loyal client is not important anymore, it's about clients who have a thick wallet. Too Bad.....

I have been going to The Cat Practice for approx. 6 months. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They seem to be a little pricey, but my biggest problem with them is that everytime I go in for an appointment, I have to wait a long time. I don't know if they overbook all the time or are just shorthanded, but I have never gone in there and had them put me in a room right away. Each time I wait at least 20-25 minutes. And then you sit there in the room for another 10-15 minutes waiting. Once in a while, would be okay, but EVERY time gets to be a little burdensome.

Are these vets qualified? You bet. Is the staff super friendly? Most definitely. Are you going to pay through the nose because the building is located in Birmingham? YES! They charge double the price for cat insulin. This is not an exaggeration. This is fact. For this reason alone, I am forced to go to a new place on the east side that only charges $95, as opposed to the Cat Practice, which charges $220. If you believe you should pay more for your cats than you would spend on yourself - a human - then feel free to go here. I love my cat, but I'm not going to continue to spend an arm and leg for pet care.

As a staff member at The Cat Practice, I would never trust the care of my three kitties to anyone else (and I've experienced others!). Every single person who works there loves cats and has a passion for giving the best care. In fact, after getting my degree in elementary education I STILL work there because I love taking care of kitties so much! I know these days everyone is concerned about cost -- myself included -- but in my opinion, The Cat Practice is worth every penny. The doctors align what they do with AAFP guidelines fo feline care and they are VERY up to date in research and best practices. Even if I didn't work there I would still bring my cats there because the staff works so hard to make sure that the cats are as comfortable and happy as possible, even though many aren't feeling well and might be a little grumpy when they come in. We really attend to every aspect of care, from medical to behavioral to comfort in the office. We take a personal interest in our relationships with patients AND their moms and dads -- I really enjoy meeting and getting to know the families who visit, and I look forward to seeing people again when I see them on the schedule. The Cat Practice is just the best place to go for kitty care!!!!

The Cat Practice is an AMAZING place to take your cats!!! They care SO much about your cat and you can tell they only want the best for them! It is a cats only clinic so you don't have to worry about barking dogs frighting your furry friend. The staff is so nice and friendly and the clinic is very clean. They go out of there way to make sure that everything is okay! Even if the prices are a little high it is totally worth it the way they really go the extra mile! I LOVE THE CAT PRACTICE! I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ALL OF MY FRIENDS!

We took our cats to the Cat Practice for years and, like the other reviewers, spent thousands of dollars there. I took our elderly cat, who was obviously in distress, there two years ago. I never saw the vet. They took him in the back room for less than 10 minutes after which the technician came out and said we need to take him to the emergency hospital (he was put down the next day). Afterwards, we received a bill (not itemized) for over $250! I wrote numerous letters to the Cat Practice asking for an itemized bill and protesting the lump-sum bill (our balance had been $0 before that day). I never received a response. Now I see that they have reported this as a delinquency. They couldn't bother to treat our cat, and they couldn't bother to provide an itemized bill or explain how on heaven's earth they could get to $250 for no tests, no shots, no examination and no visit from the vet. Their "business" is a sham where cat-lovers get ripped off. Don't ever go there if you value your cat or your wallet.

I spent literally thousands of dollars at the Cat Practice to take care of my elderly cats - one of which suffered from diabetes for four years and had to be checked once a week -- finally died of kidney failure. The other one died a couple of years later, at age 17, of kidney failure. I was grateful that I was able to have them with me as long as I did and didn't mind the money.

However, when I adopted two healthy kittens from the Humane Society who didn't generate much money for them, I became "persona non grata". They were "gatos non grata". I got no reminders when shots were due and no invitation to their annual holiday open house. One of the kittens developed a weight problem, and I was supposed to be phoned to remind me to bring him in for a weight check. Didn't happen.

When I decided to no longer work as a paralegal, I thought it might be fun to work with cats whom I dearly love. I have top-notch office and computer skills. I wrote Dr. Houlihan, the owner, a letter, expressing my interest in working for them in their office or receptionist staff. In spite of my long term relationship with them and all the money I spent there, I did not even receive the courtesy of a reply.

There have been many wonderful vets working there, but it has been a revolving door. Drs. Stacy, Budd, Beth H., Grobsen and on and on are no longer there.

I think the interest in the almighty dollar began when Dr. Houlihan's husband, Joel LaBo, began running the practice.

I think Dr. Houlihan is an outstanding cat veterinarian and the vet techs, Lauraa, Dawn and Tabitha are caring and outstanding.

As an ongoing lover of cats who is willing to go to any lengths to care for them, this scenario is extremely disturbing.

I moved into the Birmingham area and was looking for a new vet and a place that specialized in treating cats seemed like the place to go. I was very wrong and thankfully I found a place another vet that was honest and cared more about animals that money. I took my little guy in for a routine check-up and was told that he needed a badly decayed tooth removed for the tune of about $1000.00. I take very good care of him and his teeth and found that a bit odd that he needed that procedure. I did some checking and talked to other pet owners and they suggested another vet. I took him to this other vet and they were amazed that a 6 year old cat had teeth and gums that were in that good of shape. They had never seen a cat that age that had such good teeth. They praised me for the care I had been taking of him and they didn't even wait to do a cleaning because his teeth were perfect, not even any decay. This vet said it would be a shame to do any work on him and would just be taking my money if they did anything to him. I took him to another vet just to get another opinion and they said the same thing. The Cat Practice should be ashamed. To take out a tooth of a perfectly cat and put him through that and live the rest of his life missing a major tooth disgusts me. Maybe this place should focus on diagnosing animals and not inflating their prices they might actually be able to help animals. I thought vets got into this practice to aid and help animals , not pad their pockets with false diagnoses. I know most vets do care and I'm not saying some don't at The Cat Practice, but they are in dire need of an overhaul. Thankfully I got a second opinion and my little guy is happy and healthy and has a full set of healthy teeth. If The Cat Practice had any say he would be missing a tooth and they would be $1000.00 richer. They probably would have made up some other illness he had in the interim. I strongly suggest if you are in search of a vet or going to this one that you look around and find one that is honest and that you can trust the ones that you love with. This is not the place for animal lovers.

I have 3 special needs cats and was feeling confident about this place when we moved to this side of town. They came highly recommended by a few people. I feel that I was bullied into purchases that were not necessary. I was refused a prescription to sedate my difficult cat ( that usually costs $3-$5) and instead was told that he was too difficult to examine once I brought him in. So they charged me $80 to sedate him in-office. My entire bill was almost $800 for 4 cats. I was also pressured to make an appointment right then to have my cat's 2 teeth pulled. This procedure would cost $900 to $1,200 in their office. I ended up paying only $350 for this same procedure at my new vet. I believe that they care mostly about money and will not be returning.

My cat was deathly ill; I called and they refused to see her because they were already booked for the day. I explained that if she did not see a veterinarian, she could die. They did not care. I have never heard of a medical practice that would refuse sick patients, and would prioritize vaccine visits above medical emergencies. I took her to the Gasow Veterinary Hospital (Birmingham), which is also open on Sundays and didn't even need an appointment. Obviously, The Cat Practice lacks compassion and doesn't really care about the cats.

The vets here are so caring about the animals. They take the time to tell you day to day tips that will make your cat happier.

They only cater to cats, so you don't have to worry about barking dogs like at other animal care facilities.

The price is a little high and they will sometimes recommend services that are not absolutely necessary (like teeth cleaning) but I would not trust any other place with my cats. I love it here.

They only cater to cats, so you don't have to worry about barking dogs like at other animal care facilities.

The price is a little high and they will sometimes recommend services that are not absolutely necessary (like teeth cleaning) but I would not trust any other place with my cats. I love it here.

.

I LOVE The Cat Practice. It's cats only so your kitty doesn't get scared by barking dogs. The vets there are so caring and great with the animals. They take the time to teach you things like how to brush the animals' teeth.

You can't beat the level of care that you'll find for your cat at the Cat Practice.

They will sometimes recommend services that aren't absolutely necessary, like teeth cleaning, but other than that they are wonderful. They also seem to do a lot to help other cat organizations (take donations, provide towels, etc).

Highly Highly recommend.
